The service was good, ordered the chicken fried steak with Caesar salad, the entree and salad came at the same time with the explanation that they were waiting on the croutons (3) on the salad. The salad was ok, nothing special a bit lacking in flavor although the 3 croutons were excellent. The cfs had great flavor although it had lots of gristle and parts I was unable to eat or even cut with a knife. The gravy was very good. The fries were hard and very few were eaten. The ambiance was very modern and clean. Not crowded with good lighting and windows. Will not be back for lunch as it was pricey for what I received. read more

The ambience is always great, and I love the location, but the menu is a little small, and the food is okay for the price. The last time I was there, I ordered the quinoa poke bowl, and the meat was frozen when it was delivered (unable to pierce with a fork frozen). The person at the table next to me said the same about hers. I waited for about 20 minutes before I could even find someone to tell, and by that time, I left and ate at another local favorite restaurant. All of that being said, the service is always better at the bar area where you can also get the full menu, and the drinks are great! read more

Once again I tried lunch here. It use to be my favorite spot in town. They ditched my favorite dish that was very creative. Fried green tomatoes with pimento cheese, marinated onions, and candied bacon. What a loss! I keep trying to love it as I adore the Fredonia. The chicken salad was just gross! Brown, dry, salty, and sadly lacking in any flavor. How can you mess up Chicken Salad?? The after taste was a salty burn. Ugh! read more

Ended up at 1st City Cafe because Nine Flags was packed and couldn't grab a table. It was a nice surprise because we were given a quiet table tucked away and still had drinks from Nine Flags. The service was superb and the atmosphere relaxing. I had the Summer Solstice (Champagne, Gin, Lemon Juice, and Simple Syrup) which was delicious. It wasn't overly sweet or dry and the price point wasn't outrageous. My husband had the Autumn Margarita (I can't remember everything in this drink but it was delicious!). The food was amazing, ordered 4x during our stay. 1st meal was the chicken and waffles. They didn't have any crab cakes for the eggs Benedict so I decided to go with the sweet and savory plate. I love the breading on the thin crispy chicken. 2nd meal on same day is the Super Salad grilled chicken. The chicken was so good and I loved all the ingredients together. Salad was so fresh! 3rd meal on 3rd day (no photo shown, I scarfed it down) was Ax 'em jacks 'em; pancakes with breakfast sausage, it was sooooo delishhh. Service was great all 3x. Now I was told they had THE BEST Shrimp & Grits my friend had EVER tasted. Never had it, not into breakfast grits so always kind of stayed away, but I later regretted not ordering my own, I ended up trying some and it is the most savory and delicious thing those grits w/ the caramelized onions & crispy bacon.. the slivers of garlic. The food at 1st City Cafe is very tasty to many, although most would consider it a working man's menu. The selections for lunch and dinner are the same, consisting of burgers, sandwiches, large salads, and an ample variety of heavy entrees. The portion sizes are considerable, so a diner is guaranteed not to leave hungry. The desserts always get a rave review, so if finishing your meal includes something sweet at the end, leave room for one of their tasty treats. But be forewarned about the 1st City Cafe menu: the food offered is starchy, mostly fried, and particularly heavy 'high carb' - not the lean, fresh, clean foods most people crave today. There are no options for lighter, healthier fare such as grilled lean proteins of fish, steak or chicken, nor any trendy options like the ever-popular 'power bowls' favored by so many diners these days. I have been so pleased to stay at the Fredonia hotel and get to experience 1rst City Cafe and take in the charm that Nac has to offer. I have been here three times now (twice for dinner, once for lunch) and have been impressed every time. Although the menu isn't booming with option after option, the simplicity of the menu keeps the food delicious and consistent. The service is exceptional and the staff has a team-like approach, which helps an establishment run smoother in my opinion.
