We had never had this level of work done within our home. Ashley (Project Manager) and Dave were the 2nd company to submit a bid on our basement remodel (thanks to Angi's List). They came in with very impressive ideas and were extremely transparent with cost figures from the get-go. Meeting Ashely and Dave felt like meeting long lost members of our family. We had a rare comfort level with them right away. The demo of the basement started right on schedule. The team that worked on our basement were comprised of diligent, respectful professionals that kept us updated at all times. Mikey, Tom, Flavio and Pedro (and wife) did exceptional work. We have received many compliments on the quality of their work. From demo, drywall stage, painting, all of the electrical work that Mikey orchestrated like a conductor of a symphony, to the final touches once carpeting and granite were installed - we could not be more impressed with their hard work. We do want to add - that Mikey can do ANTYTHING!!! His talent knows no end. The crew discovered an issue that required immediate resolution after the demo stage and Dave and Ashely worked quickly to determine the depth of the issue and remedy promptly and fully disclosed all costs of the additional work. Not only did they make the big parts of the remodel progress in a smooth manner, but they also think of all the little details that may not pop into your mind during a remodel. Ashley was on top of every minute detail. She noticed the little things that should be addressed for the room to be cohesive. Ashely is a wonderful communicator - always providing updates on next steps, when to expect the next work crew, assisted us with purchasing appliances for the bar area, etc. She thinks of everything. She is an exceptional project manager. She is very supportive and encouraging to her team - everyone that worked in our home was polite, thoughtful and determined to include us and our wishes on each step of the remodel. The job was finished promptly when promised. The most impressive quality of this wonderful team is that nothing was ever "completed" without being done meticulously and looking perfect. We had gotten multiple quotations to have our basement finished, and their quotation was competitive versus the field. However, what I think makes this team stand out versus others: 1) Speed: The team works quickly to get the job done with minimal days on site, basically working as long as it was convenient for us. We have a young daughter, so having the crews end work so she could sleep was huge for us and they were always respectful of our home and time. While we ran into a few snags with materials, Bruce communicated with us throughout the process and ensured we got what we needed. 2) Flexibility: When we asked to make some adjustments throughout the build process as we saw the framing or other items go in, they were able to accommodate them and actually worked with us to ensure we were happy with the result. Flabio, the framer, came out a follow up time to change some of the soffits for us, not because he had done anything wrong the first time, but because we preferred the look of framing out our soffits slightly differently after looking at them for some time. While I am sure they do not want everyone constantly changing the scope of the job, I truly felt they wanted us to be happy with the basement and did not force us to continue with an initial plan just because it was what was written at the very beginning. While other suppliers may have had more elaborate drawn up plans, the flexibility Dave Richards afforded was actually more valuable to me as the ability to make adjustments when we saw how things actually looked in our basement was helpful. No plan on paper can substitute this and Dave Richards did not throw change orders at us even if we asked for some small adjustments. 3) Transparency: They did not nickel and dime us after their quotation was done. We also had the ability to provide our own fixtures if we wanted. Alternately, they passed through their discounts on fixtures (e.g., toilets, vanity, shower) from Lowes directly to us. I would guess other companies would charge retail prices and keep that margin for themselves. Any incremental costs we paid above the first quotation were from an explicit request we made (i.e., asked to replace some standard doors with glass doors) and we were provided with a quotation prior to any invoices. 4) Clean: Their team always brings drop cloths to protect the rest of our home when working and maintains good communication with us throughout the day. They also cleaned out materials and even when leaving the worksite day to day, vacuumed and organized tools and materials for the following day. Mike, one of their team leads, even saw a small paint drop on our main floor (where they were not working) and offered to help us get it off. 5) Integrity: Based on the points above, we just feel that Dave Richards Home Improvement is the type of company and team with whom we want to do business. Hardworking, capable, and respectful teams that just want you to be happy with your project and done at a fair price. As a fairly sizeable project for us in terms of scope and spend, we were happy to do it with a company that worked with us to ensure we realized our vision for our basement and was not looking to get every dollar out of us that they could. Bottom line, Dave Richards and his teams are just good people and the type we love having in our home. We will definitely be calling Bruce at Dave Richards Home Improvement anytime we have a home project and would recommend them to others for any of your home improvement needs. Working with Rob Meyer of True Handyman was the single worst experience that we have had during a…read morehome renovation or repair project. It began with a bathroom remodel. We were given Rob's contact info by a tile installer who we had worked with in the past who told us that he was a "close friend" and "great dude." At the time we didn't notice all of the red flags (no reviews online, very little web presence, no address on the bid). We just trusted the person who we had worked with before. And at the beginning Rob was great to work with. The bidding process was easy, he was very responsive and courteous, he told us that he could do the whole bathroom renovation from start to finish, and he seemed to understand exactly what we wanted. As soon as the demo was done and work began, it quickly became clear that Rob and his crew had absolutely no idea what they were doing. The bath drain line was graded upwards (I kid you not!), the one gas line that they moved was left leaking in multiple places and was sealed behind drywall in that state, the GFIC that they installed was faulty, the bath fan was wired incorrectly to the point of not actually working, the sink plumbing was too low for the sink (off by ~7 inches), and the drywall was so poorly installed that Rob's employees spent weeks adding more and more skim coats to try to hide the mess (which was unsuccessful).  He and his crew also struggled with professionalism and safety. They turned the gas off to our other two units without informing us, then turned it back on without re-lighting the appliances. This left one unit with an active gas leak. They also left a bottle of urine on site for us to clean up, and repeatedly failed to comply with requests not to play music on site because our downstairs tenant worked at home. Rob brought his child to the work site without our permission, and his child apparently knocked a hole in the wall during that time. After a few weeks of asking Rob to please provide more oversight or do the work himself, and him telling us that it would be inconvenient for him to do this, we terminated the contract. True Handyman was unable to do the work in a safe, professional, and workmanlike manner. In person we agreed to amicably terminate the contract. We explained that we felt we should be reimbursed both for the work that was not done at all, and the work that would have to be redone (the plumbing, electrical, etc.). Rob then dropped this bombshell: True Handyman did not have enough money to reimburse us. We would need to arrange a payment plan. A little under half of the money that he owed us was for work that hadn't even been done yet, so how could the money be gone? We agreed to work with him assuming payment was provided in a timely manner. He wrote us a check for $1500 (about one fifth of what he owed us) and told us to email him. When we emailed him, he was very slow to respond. Eventually he admitted that he did owe us reimbursement for the work that hadn't even been started (obviously), but he refused to provide any remedy for the work that we had to remove and then redo (the faulty electrical, incorrect plumbing, really almost everything that he and his team had done). On top of that, even for the amount that he admitted that he owed us, he refused to pay any more of it back unless we signed an agreement forfeiting our right to claim anything else.  Let me repeat that for emphasis: Rob held hostage money that he admitted he had no right to keep, as leverage to try to force us to forfeit our right to other funds that were in dispute.    When we responded detailing all of the issues, and once again demanded reimbursement, he ghosted us. After two weeks of no response, we called him, and again appealed to Rob to at least give us back the money that he owed us for the work that was not completed. Rob, once again, tried to make us enter into an agreement saying that we wouldn't seek reimbursement for the work that had to be re-done. He argued that the state of the plumbing, electrical, and other unacceptable items was our fault for interrupting his "process" and not giving him yet more time to "finish." The truth is he was given more than enough time to deliver a competent product, but proved unable to. And as we explained to him, there is a huge difference between work that is under way and not yet "finished," versus work that has been "finished"  in a slipshod manner (and sealed behind drywall!), and that has to be removed and redone from scratch. Rob left us with the latter.  We asked that we meet halfway on the cost of the work that had to be redone. Even this was not acceptable to Rob, who claimed he didn't have enough money to do half, and would only agree to slightly less than that. At the end of the phone call we had finally recovered our deposit for the work that was never done, and less than half of what we paid him for work that had to be literally torn out and re-done.

Over the past couple of months my parents and I were looking to remodel the main bathroom at our…read morehouse. We got a couple estimates at the end of covid, but waited to get a couple more estimates. I looked on Yelp and saw that Firelands construction had a 5 star rating and responded very quickly for estimates. I sent them a request and they came out and my parents liked him so they hired him. We also had some drain issues which caused them to start the demo earlier than planned. July 17th, we were told there was black mold and we had to leave the house for safety issues. The black mold was in the bathroom that was being remodeled as well as the other bathroom(they back up to each other). Fast forward to July 4th weekend. We were in a different hotel after leaving the air b&b for a week. I get a call saying they are almost done with the entire job. I knew that was a complete lie, because I had been going everyday to check on the house and get the mail. I called the contractor and basically told him he was lying. He showed up at our house so mad because his workers lied to him. Then he had another worker over and was trying to get him to drywall over the black mold. The other workers wrote their name on the floor instead of replacing the subfloor where the black mold was. They put the new flooring over the top of the old sub flooring which was damaged from the mold. He apologized and said they would fix this immediately. Originally, Scott told us that the one bathroom we planned on remodeling would take 10 days. He said he would have a crew out first thing Monday morning after the 4th of July weekend to get the job done. I was really concerned because I did not see much material in our garage. But again, we signed a contract so we really did not think we had any options. Fast forward to July 16th, the Friday the promised to at least have a sink, toilet, and shower installed so we could move back home(that was between the two bathrooms but we didn't care). Then they started pressuring me to have my parents sign the contract for the additional bathroom we needed remodeled. I explained my parents were not comfortable signing anything. Ashley, Scott's wife said she would put that date in the new contract for them to sign. This never happened. On July 16th, at 5pm, Scott came with 4-5 people and did some work. It was the worst quality. They ruined our carpet with paint and grease stains. They swept wood scraps in the hole where the toilet goes. Additionally I'd like to add, that Scott would come for 5 to 10 minutes and say he had to go to Lowe's or Home Depot. He was always leaving to get the supplies that he was supposed to have ordered in June with the deposit we gave him on both projects. July 19th, Monday. I stepped outside and noticed one of my grandmothers rings next to the swing. One of the female workers was messing around outside but I didn't think anything of it. When I saw the ring I immediately went inside to where it was kept in my moms office desk, and the other ring that was with it(also my grandmothers) was gone. I was so upset, but I am working from home and had to finish out my day. Not even 10 minutes later I got a text that my credit card was declined and possible stolen. Long story short, this girl stole two of my credit cards, $300 in rolled change( we had a garage sale and I had it rolled and counted to take to the bank) my grandmothers ring, and a gift card. I filed a police report with the name Firelands Construction provided me. Supposedly she used a fake last name and address when she filled out her application. July 27th. We were lucky to have one worker come to work the last few days. However he wouldn't have been able to do any work because he didn't have any supplies. So we went out and bought everything to finish the project. I would text Scott daily practically begging for the supplies to get the job done. I also need to add that some of the supplies that Firelands DID provide for the project were not even the items we picked out for the remodel. We were kind of stuck and desperate to move back in so we just accepted the items. Scott promised this special order tub we picked out would be delivered on July 27th. I asked him and asked him to get me an order number so I could confirm and he never did. I went to Home Depot and they said there was no way our contractor could have bought that tub. You have to go through Home Depot to get it ordered and installed. Scott then told me rebath would contact me to install. When they called they said it would be 6-8 weeks just to schedule a time to measure and a couple of months for the supplies and for an install date. I would highly recommend hiring someone else for your remodel or construction project. We were jerked around so much and lied to on a continuing basis.

Hired them to remove wallpaper, paint, remove some built ins, update a basement and restore a fireplace. The first paint job they did had to be redone because it wasn't right and there were people just hanging out in my house like it was their lounge spot. Then we found a water leak which pushed things back understandably, but I was told multiple times everything would be done by a certain date. I said I'm not sure that's realistic but was still told it would all happen by the date. Gets closer to the date, not looking on track, got told a crew of guys is coming out to finish it, and they never show up. Finished a little over a week late with the owner coming out to do the work between 10 pm and 3 am. It was clear they rushed it at the end as the work was sloppy, I had to go back and fix multiple items myself because I couldn't get them back out to complete the work (like window trim that wasn't replaced leaving a hole in the wall, loose fixtures, etc). It was obvious that the project was not a priority for them. I was told after they started work that they just landed an apartment contract and that was their main focus. So if you're looking for a commercial property then I have no clue if they are good or not, but I certainly wouldn't hire them for any residential property work. The final straw and reason I posted the review is the recent pictures on their Yelp profile are fake. The pics that say "remodel" of the bathroom, kitchen, living room, dining room, bedroom, hallway, office... those are all pictures of my house before they ever started doing any work. So if you like the way they look let me know and I'll point you to the company that actually did that work. I was ready to let go of everything else that happened but posting photos of work that isn't yours and passing it off as your own is just shady.

Long story short, she was NOT helpful in any way - merely an order taker. I couldn't make heads or tail of their website - but I knew exactly what I wanted. I looked elsewhere for a vendor to no avail. Even if I had ordered with the online company, I would have had to install myself or find an installer. So I turned to Yelp . . . I have had MUCH success with Yelp finding excellent service and skilled providers. I entered the details of what I wanted and submitted the project for response. I got maybe 4 companies contacting me - one being Eric Call Contracting. This company asked to schedule some time to talk - and so we did. All the other responses merely asked if I HAD the deck covering as they just wanted to install it. None would entertain the idea of helping me source the deck cover. Eric and Angie showed up when they said they would and we began to talk. I explained what I wanted, showed the brochure from the home and garden show, showed them our deck - and they went to work. Eric tried to work with the awning company I had wanted to buy from - but he got nowhere despite being more persistent than me. Eric still understood what I wanted - a permanent frame that would attach to and extend up from the deck with canvas runners that we would open and pull shut and remove in the winter. We would also be able to replace the runners should they get damaged. Eric drew up a design and shared it with me - along with possible runners he found on Amazon. We had a lot of back and forth and they were great keeping in touch. I finally decided to go with them despite having no other bids for comparison. Clearly no one else wanted to do the work needed to get me the deck covering I wanted. I signed on the dotted line and cut a check to get the project started. Again, Eric and Angie did a great job of communicating with me and providing updates. Although working through Yelp does provide some financial protection, I was still nervous going with the first company I contacted. But they definitely earned my trust - the materials showed as promised. And work began as promised, and before I knew it, my vision of a deck covering had materialized! Our deck is on the back/south side of the house. There are no trees or shading so we fight to keep the house cool on sunny days. We had recently replaced a large, rust painted deck with a smaller light treated wood deck. Now with this covering, we are already enjoying not having to turn on the A/C as much, leaving the back door open for a breeze, and actually being able to sit on our deck when the sun is hot. We've also been able to pull the runners closed when a windy storm hit. And in the winter, I'll take the runners down to protect them and allow full sun in the cold temperatures. I cannot say enough about how I appreciated the work this company did. I highly recommend you contact them when you have a project.
