It's small, but packed with tons of great supplies for students. I could never get enough of their colorful selection of Sharpies, their artful collections of interestingly-shaped highlighter pens, or their row up on row of cute notepads. It's true, I probably spent wayyy more money in here than I should have - especially as a student. They also have food, and if you forgot your lunch this is a great place to stop for a quick snack. Make sure and go when there are two cashiers (there's only one during the quiet times) - especially if you're in a hurry. There's also no parking near here so plan accordingly.

Both times I have left crestfallen by this store, (though I have drowned some of my sorrows at the local brew house). Perhaps the shop itself is an art installation? Just something to look at only? It is never open. The first time they had the open sign up, which was interesting... titillating even. Schrödinger's store, both open yet not at the same time? A lesson of "Denial of Capitalism Applied to the Modern American Shopper: A Study of Consumerism and Frustration" maybe? I'm guessing someone made off with the sign in a temper because next time the previously mocking OPEN board was completely gone, but the door remained locked... midday... on a beautiful Saturday when the town was full of people wandering the shops. Ah, but you know, maybe this is my fault? I should look them up online and get the proper information. Alas, no... any search for information on hours, etc. online leads to a few old digital dead ends with no information of value. Advise, Shop Curator, should I appeal to the tarot? Mediumship? Ley lines? An extra star because your things are lovely, if only I could have given you money for one or more of them.

I go to a lot of museum exhibitions. I found SJIMA to present an exhibition that is better than any museum in Washington; better than SAM, better than Bainbridge, etc. I'm not sure what has changed; maybe staff is getting complacent, but the last two exhibitions have been incredibly disappointing. The current exhibition of Andy Eccleshall is flat, does not flow and the lighting is terrible. It really is a disservice to Eccleshall as his work is fantastic. The work in the glass room in front looks like a college student's exhibition. The volume of work in the small room is overwhelming and average at best. Again, something must have changed because the last two exhibitions are not up to what my expectations are for SJIMA. I will probably check out the next one but if it is at the level of the last two, I won't be wasting my time or money again.

On a recent walk through downtown and the "new" arts district, I was surprised to see a familiar…read moreshop still open (every day in fact) in these weird times. Charming place for all sorts of gift items, and much of it local. Hand-crafted jewelry, cards, costume hats and caps with animals and birds on them (I bought one with the Bellingham flag embossed on it), and what seemed like hundreds of lovely scarves (bought two red ones) and terrific T-shirts, as well as many games and toys found in shelves stuffed floor to ceiling. Lots of Mexican and Haitian wall hangings, too. Quietly sitting in the corner was Jackie who was so quiet we didn't know she was there until we asked a question, and who allowed us to browse in the very small space of the store. Great place to rediscover (if you didn't know it before) and perfect for special gifts for the season.
