I can't believe it has taken me so long to go to 2nd & Charles; this store is AMAZING. I was under the impression it was mostly a used record store, but was very much mistaken. It has TONS of books, some new, some used, and the price of the used books varies based on the quality of the book itself. I stopped by hoping to look for some vintage books (a quick stop with my youngest son), and we both ended up spending more than an hour there. The kid's section is great. There are so many books, with beanbags for kids to relax and read. Its very well organized and if you have any trouble locating something, the employees are incredibly helpful. Besides the books, 2nd & Charles also has CDs, DVDs, vinyl, and comics, plus a lot of paraphernalia for several pop culture collections. My son found a great Darth Vader figure that talks for $1 and he hasn't stopped playing with it since. As I previously mentioned, the employees were great. They helped me to find a Beatles coffee table book that retailed for $40, for sale at 2&C for less than $8, in prime condition. They also reminded me of the bin outside of the store with free items, which were basically things people tried to sell back, 2&C couldn't buy back, and the owner just wanted to be rid of. Definitely worth sorting through. They are a green company and do not provide bags, so be sure to bring one if this is a problem. DO NOT expect to make any money on what you may take to sell. Unless you're in a hurry to unload unwanted items, find another avenue to make revenue. They offer approximately double the value of your items in store credit than cash. But is two times less than 10 cents on the dollar a deal? You decide. I looked for two specific items, a book and a DVD, neither of which they had. Fun place to browse but the majority of what they had to offer was overpriced. The highlight of my shopping experience was waiting only 20 minutes for my items to be assessed and the clerk couldn't have been nicer. Friendly, polite, helpful guy. Good place to get lots of cool retro stuff. It isn't the cheapest, and it's annoying that despite the quantity of stuff you buy they tend not to place it into a bag. That said, nice place to find retro games and controllers, etc. You can get some deals sometimes- try to hit a buy on get one half off day. Lots of bluray and DVD selection, books, magazines etc. I will admit, the name doesn't explain the place. Found this store by accident, but love it. The books are well organized into genres. They sell new merchandise as well, but it is the same price, or more than other bookstores. I love the sales they have, and plan my shopping around them. The staff are always friendly and helpful. Remember to bring a reusable bag because they do not put your items in a bag (you can buy one at checkout I believe) which I think is great. read more

This place is DANGEROUS. I go in thinking I'll get 1 item and browse for maybe 15 minutes. An hour later I have a stack of 8 books that I'm trying to balance on my way out the door. (It's bring your own bag, fyi!) The prices are great for used music, movies, and books all in good condition. This place is ESPECIALLY perfect for folks looking to build up a child's library because so many books are only $1-3 each. (I did a few baby shower gifts this way!) Buy back program is fair--and it's easy to build up a lot of credit if you've got movies and books you don't want anymore. If you're looking for books from your youth that you haven't seen in a while and can only find online, try here first! I LOVE this place! I absolutely LOVE this store. I can't even begin to express how amazing this place is. I was there on opening day, and I've spent WAY too much money in there since!! Before I get too far into my review, I do have one recommendation---- When you're looking at items on the shelf, check to see if there are any other of the same item. For example-- if they have 2 books on the shelf and one is more worn than the other, the price will be cheaper! If you're willing to deal with slightly more yellowed book pages, or slightly more used movies/games, definitely take the time to compare the prices. It's saved me a ton of money!! Every time I've walked through the door, I've been greeted by an employee. While that might not seem like much, it really shows you what kind of environment you're walking into. They have books, books and more books. Cooking, religious, fictions and non-fictions, teen, pre-teen, toddler, you name it! They have displays for games and other things including Pop! Figures, board games, knick-knacks and other general toys that are perfect stocking stuffers! They have a gaming section covering almost all generations of games/systems up to 2017, a movie section that includes thousands of different titles, a great vinyl collection and even instruments on display that are available for purchase. The entire place is extremely well organized, and there's always an employee walking around that will ask if you're finding everything okay, sometimes they'll even have a great conversation with you about whatever type of thing you're looking for! There's even a few spots to sit down in the store where you can read a book, and a couple of TV's where you can play a videogame! I also went for the midnight release of the new Harry Potter and the Cursed Child book. You had to pre-order beforehand to get a copy, but the process was extremely quick. The line for the book was short mainly because a lot of people didn't pre-order so I had my copy of the book and I was out of the door within 10 minutes compared to standing in line at a Barnes and Noble or other bookstore for an hour or more. If you ever just need somewhere to visit on the weekend, or a good way to waste your day away, please go check out 2nd and Charles. I can't stress how amazing the store is, and how great the prices are for the large variety of items offered. Wow! My kids and I stopped in today for the first time and spent over an hour in the store. They literally have everything. Prices were quite reasonable and all the books were easy to find and nicely organized. The collection of Harry Potter merchandise is the best in town and my 8 year old was thrilled! If you are selling books, this store is not worth your time. I brought in several new books (20) and after waiting over 30 minutes, I was told that they were worth about fifteen cents each. Like the other locations in the area, this place has a TON of products for anyone into nerdy/quirky, teen, manga/anime/kawaii, theater, gaming culture, and BEYOND. The most noticeable things near the front are video games and associated memorabilia. Other large sections of the store include children's books, Christian books, vinyl records, DVDs, CDs, adult fiction, and a ton more. For Japanese or comic book fans, prices range from average to slightly high when compared to Amazon or eBay. But definitely cheaper than your average convention. Wonderful place w/ good customer service. Can REALLY low-ball your book rebuy, in ways that confound and disappoint. One week: $28 for a half box of our dregs, next week $13 for a full box of current and popular titles. I know it has to do with the market and what appears to be systematic internet research, but I was disappointed and there was no explanation given or per-item breakdown of the buy. Fair resale value says 25% of original retail; with two dozen books in the box there's no way they anywhere near approached that amount. They were busy and moving customers right on through; really came away feeling ripped off and regretting I hadn't gone a different route w/ my used books. For one, donation would have felt a whole lot better than their low-ball, for-profit offer. Be careful!! read more

I didn't have a very good experience at 2nd in Charles. I was visiting a friend in Richmond and went to the store off of West Broad street. I was given $9.70 for 10 seasons of Friends DVDS, several movies DVDS and books. I was NOT told I could get my items back when I complained about the buy back cost. The manager said she was sorry, but never offered any extra money, items back or store credit. Shame on her! The sweet cashier told me to complete a survey and I could get $5 dollars back. This place is amazing! It's as if someone merged GameStop from a decade ago and Borders together into one, huge store filled with used and new books, games, comics, graphic novels, and music. Henrico desperately needed a bookstore like this. Prices on everything are surprisingly reasonable, if not cheaper at times, and oddly variable. I wouldn't go in expecting to find exactly everything you find in Barnes & Noble, but the selection is by far superior. Best part is due to the nature of their selling used books/etc, their stock will change constantly. I've finally found a new place to periodically visit and browse. read more

What ever happened to customer service at 2nd and Charles? I tried to return a book without a receipt. I had another receipt from another purchase that said store credit would be applied within 14 days without a receipt. The store wouldn't honor the policy. They said they couldn't find me in system due to being locked out. This same store had an employee become critical of my conservative book. read more

I went to trade in about 300 dvds, they took 6 and offered me $10. When I brought them in they told me it would be about 45 mins, which is fine but I received a text in 3 mins saying my offer is ready. There's no way they could check that many dvds in 3 mins! read more

This bookstore is awesome! There is so many books and they even have games and DVDs and toys! The store is so big with books everywhere you look and there a lot of places were you can sit down relax, read, or do your work. The books are organized well into different categories so it is easy to find the books you are looking for. They also have free books in two big boxes right outside their store. I highly recommend looking in those boxes there is some hidden gems there. The staff is very helpful and their customer service is great! Their starting prices for books start at2- 3 dollars so it is cheap but is can get very expensive especially if you buy a lot of books. Another thing, if you sell books to this bookstore you don't get a lot back so don't recommend selling books here. Other than that, though I absolutely love this and I recommend it to anyone. read more

For the good-staff is friendly and helpful. There are many items: books, comics etc. Sale prices are good. Not so good: I went to this store to sell CD's and to purchase others. I have no probably with $1/CD in store credit on my CD's because the purchase price on the store CD's are very reasonable. Unfortunately the CD display is an absolute mess. I have been in the store 3 times and for the last time. The stores attempt to organize the CD display is just that, an attempt and a very poor one. It is not easy to browse through the racks because they are so packed. An associate asked if I needed help and I told him yea if they could organize the racks better. He admitted it was a shambles and said good luck when I asked about an artist-he was able to determine there was a CD by the artist, but no way of knowing where. The sorting needs to be even more diverse for genres. read more

Great used book selection. I'd like to see them organize their comics some day; you can find some good stuff but it's such a mess it's not usually worth the time digging. Used DVD prices are a little high too. They've got a great toy selection though, and they do a lot of sales. Mostly I come here for the used books, which is a huge selection. read more

I brought in a number of games for the wii, Wii U, and some rare GameCube games recently, along with a number of first edition books and dvds/seasons. I normally have had good experiences here despite how low they offer for trade-ins. I arrived at noon and promptly turned in my items for inspection. The employee helping me did not warn me about a potentially long wait time until my items would be checked so I decided to walk around while I waited. The gentlemen working always give me an estimated wait time in case I need to leave and come back. Two and a half hours later I checked in and was told that she would text me soon with my order. An hour after this I politely asked if it would be much like longer, as I was going to leave and come back later. A second employee rudely told me how busy that they were busy and that they would do my items next. After fifteen minutes I was called back up to collect my items. They took about one book, and did not appear to have checked any of my games, as the bins looked the same. When questioned why none of my items were worth trading, the initial employee responded by saying that they already had an influx of these items, though she failed to even look at me as she was soooo busy staring at a piece of paper. Since I had 4 hours of wait time, I checked the gaming, book, and dvd section to see if they already had copies, which they did not based on the items displayed.... this was encouraging, as I assumed they would want to replenish certain sections. I will not be returning here again, as it appeared that the staff was inept and rude. Save your money and go to bits and pixels, at least they are polite and have the decency to check the games brought in, rather than just turning them back over to the buyer out of what appeared to be "annoyance". If you suck at your job or dislike it, then do the customers a favor and work elsewhere. That was four hours of my one day off wasted for a few bucks and a bad attitude. Update: I received over one hundred dollars from GameStop for the trade-in of all games formally brought to 2nd and Charles the day beforehand. I would rather go to the tech exchange than wait four hours to be treated with disrespect. read more

However I paid with a debit card and when checking out I was deceptively asked if I wanted a "free magazine" which turned out to be a subscription to receive them in the mail. They already had my card number. I didn't want this, and then I had to call twice to get it cancelled. I was trying to clear some clutter of excess DVDs and books and had never done the buyback thing before, but had friends who have grown children who have. So, I thought that I would try this new process. Carried 50 DVDs to the store, waited about one hour and they took only 11 of them, said they were over stocked and paid less than 50 cents each. Then took in 29 Danielle Steele books, about half of which were in pristine condition and hard cover with the dust covers intact, as the employee said they were looking for more fiction books. When I returned for my offer, they returned everything but the hardcover books (about 13) and paid me $1.30! Had I realized they kept the best and paid nothing, I would have asked for ALL of my books back. Wow, what a rip, I could have gotten more in a yard sale, or donated to a worthy cause and I am sure that they would have benefited more than 10 cents a book. I guess if you are buying you can possibly get a fair deal, but I for one will not return to sell or buy from this store. Sorry! read more

For me to tell you I absolutely love this place is a monstrous understatement. Just think for a second and imagine if GameStop, Barnes & Noble, FYE, Sam Ash, and a basic retro store all merged into one. Well, imagine no more because now there is 2nd & Charles. They have video games ranging from NES to Xbox One. They have consoles in the same range; they even have consoles than can play video games from five different consoles packed into one. They have an endless amount of books with one section dedicated solely to Harry Potter along with a comic book section on the right wall as you enter. They have a wide selection of CD's and vinyls. If you have a favorite band, they probably have a CD or vinyl of them in stock. They have a small section near the back of the store with guitars as well so if you are a musician or a guitar player, stop back there. They also have a bunch of other things that I probably missed. The cashier who rang us up was very friendly and even offered to check out the discs that my dad got to make sure there weren't any scratches on them. This place isn't just 2nd & Charles, it is 2nd & Heaven. I would gladly go back any day to make a purchase or just look around in general. read more
