I discovered 3 Sons Thai Kitchen while trying to find some nearby gluten-free Thai It's such a rarity to find Thai places that are accommodating beyond the basic dishes, especially for my favorite, drunken noodles. The restaurant is quaint with minimal seating; I dined in during my first visit and had no issue getting a seat on a weeknight. They can do countless dishes gluten-free, and they offer basil kee mao (drunken noodles) as an option. If you like heat, definitely get the highest level for some extra delicious flavoring. The ingredients taste fresh and make for excellent leftovers. The only issue I have is that their online ordering isn't accommodating for dietary modifications currently. Overall, this is my new favorite place to hit the spot when I'm craving some delicious noodles. read more

I never take food home. Never have. I just don't want my cars smelling like anything besides umm, cars. Went to 3 Sons which is literally 7 minutes from my home, never realizing that it existed. I've always loved Thai food, my goto being Ridge Thai in Ridgewood. Unfortunately, after moving to Livingston, Ridge Thai wasn't 7 minutes away; it was more like an hour. Fast forward the other night. Walked in with absolutely zero expectations. Decor was nice. And while I think it's primarily a take out, something I also never do (involves putting food in the car) they do have a few tables. Walked up to the counter to order and about 15 minutes later I was eating the best Thai food I've ever had. Literally. I've probably eaten in 30 Thai places in my life and none compared. How good? I brought home leftovers which I probably hadn't done since sometime during the Obama Administration. Yeah, it was that good. I rarely use superlatives but in this case it's well deserved. Best pizza? Patsy's in Paterson. Best Italian? Gemelli in Hackensack. Best deli? Katz's (duh) and best Thai, 3 Sons. First time trying 3 Sons Thai. We are seasoned Thai foodies and we're highly disappointed with tonight's meals. We had 1 Pad Thai and Chicken Volcano. The pad Thai was OK but really lacked depth of flavor. It was heavy on the fish sauce, no lime or cilantro and light on the bean spouts. The volcano was significantly over fried, tough, and almost un-chewable. The sauce was on point with a complex and sweet variety of citrus notes. There could have been a bit more broccoli as well. We typically don't post bad reviews, but are hoping this gets to the owner and helps improve their meals. read more

I love Thai food but I have food allergies. When I read the reviews I had to try it. They really are attentive to your allergies and provide alternatives that work. I really appreciated the suggestions and the effort. I ordered the See Eww with the substitutes. The flavor was there and it was great. Thank you for amazing service. I ordered the lunch special with comes with a spring roll - my favorite. Sooo good. It's a small place with a few high top tables. Decided to try this place on a random rainy Sunday night and it was empty. The location is small, mostly for takeaway, but there are a few tables if you want to dine in. I got the Thai iced tea which was incredible! My friend also tried and really like it. I would go back here just for the Thai iced tea. We split spring rolls which were just okay in my opinion. The inside of the spring rolls was mushy and not my preferred style of spring rolls. My friend and I both got curries for our main course. I got the panang curry with tofu which was good but not great. It tasted good but could have been more flavorful with a bit more heat. This could just be resolved by asking for a spicer version of the dish. My friend got green curry with chicken. He really enjoyed it. I don't eat meat anymore so I didn't try it. He said the rice could have been more aromatic. The portions are quite large and the right size for the price. It's $17.95 for a curry. My friend also got mango and sticky rice for dessert. The rice looked blue/green but tasted fine. It had the right salt level for something sweet. Overall, this place is cute and the service was excellent. The woman who works there is so pleasant and helpful. I should say if you do eat there, they serve the food in to-go containers. Not a big deal, just a heads up! Disclaimer: I love Thai food. Went here for dinner after seeing such rave reviews. After looking at the menu with decision paralysis as everything looked so good, I was greeted by a woman asking if I needed help. I asked her a few questions about the menu and settled on the 3 Son Volcano Chicken dish. It was really good, described as like general tsos. It was made with a house made sauce, very sweet if that is your thing (its mine!). My friend got a regular chicken Pad Thai, it was good but very on par with what I am use to - this place has so many options, I want to try so many more. Two thai teas is what had me raving about this place. The woman came over to check on our order and we found out she is the owner. She explained her process and what makes her tea different and it was so good, if nothing else go here for Thai Tea! The owner is a single mother with three sons - hense the name. Visiting my family in the Caldwells, we were looking for a restaurant for dinner and my mom suggested Thai. I looked at the various Thai in the area and this came in highest-rated on Yelp, so we went here to check it out and evaluate for ourselves. The verdict: Mixed bag. And it's an interesting reason why. * Red curry fish cakes: 5 stars. Excellent flavor, the right ingredients done right. Comes with a nice sweet/spicy dipping sauce, otherwise they're not really spicy on their own (despite the menu claiming medium spice). But compared to everything else, I can't complain. * Lemongrass wings: My dad wanted these. I tried one. They're done well on the outside, to the point of being overdone. But it's delicious flavor overall. I am not complaining one iota about the flavor. And the meat was done just right inside, it's only on the outside that it was too crispy. Disclaimer: I, myself, love it that way. But others in my family found it hard to get past. This review is for everyone! * Chicken Sate: My mom wanted this. It was decent, I'm not a big peanut fan but in hindsight I should have dipped it for a fair assessment, so I'm not gonna penalize them for what seemed like bland chicken dipped into satay sauce. Incomplete picture on my part. * Pad thai: The big divider. My mom loved it because the flavor is different than regular pad thai at most other places. My brother-in-law dislikes it for the same reason. I tried it, I can tell the flavor is different, and I think I'm on the side favoring the difference, but overall pad thai is not my thing so I don't have a good basis to go by. Just know that if you are a standard pad thai consumer, this place is going to deft your expectations a little. * Basil kee mao with chicken: I ordered this, I took home leftovers in the fridge and had more the next day, I used the hot oil on this, and this is where the 3 star settles in. The menu claims it is spicy. It is not. No spice in the meal, and for that matter, no spice in the hot oil! The oil is full of pepper flakes and seeds! How is it not spicy?! But it's not. Nothing I did with their foods gave me the remotest sensation of spicy other than the sweet/spicy sauce with the fish cakes. And I loved the noodles the first day and there's a good amount of chicken, but when I reheated the second day, all the noodles were rubbery and chewy! How does that happen? I've never had that happen before, and it got me questioning what's going in there. And that's never good. So I'm gonna pass on this place and stick to the one in Caldwell next time. It may not be the greatest Thai ever, but at least the foods there meet expectations - spicy when they say spicy, pad thai tastes like pad thai, noodles taste like noodles. read more

Tasty Thai food served in generous amounts. I had the yellow curry vegetable dish and the classic pad Thai. My dining partner had Tom Yom soup and a chicken dish she enjoyed. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of food in our takeout order. In ordering on their website they specifically ask about level of spice, but one has to be careful while ordering as I almost clicked on ordering spicy by mistake. One of the sons must have been taking the day off. First, we dined in, and this is a 95% takeout establishment; about 10 person high table seating available, not comfortable at all. Second, my order must have gone out with a pickup order, as my order came out wrong; had to wait for a recook. Third, food served in plastic and aluminum takeout containers, with plastic ware. Lastly, over priced. Food was satisfactory. First and last time here. How the 2 1/2 sons have a 4.5 rating is beyond me. Not trying to be negative, just sharing my feedback. My biggest issue was that they mixed up two of the three dishes we ordered in terms of the spiciness. Kids ended up getting theirs spicy and let's just say it wasn't fun! Ordered lunch from here a couple of times, and I have been very satisfied each time. I've tried the See Eww, the pad Thai, and the Chicken Suki Hang. All have been good, and with the lunch special you get two spring rolls as well, a solid serving size for a very reasonable price. When I have been in the mood for Thai, this place comes in clutch. The flavors are there with each dish I've tried. When ordering and choosing your spice level, you can generally go up a level if you have the faintest spice tolerance. I haven't tried the highest level of Thai spicy, but I've had no issues with anything lower. The springs rolls are good, they are a little doughier than typical but excellent flavor. The Thai iced tea is great, and the bubble tea is very decent. They have a solid menu size and I would like to order dinner from them. So if you were planning on dining in and you have any sort of disability hip trouble leg trouble foot trouble, etc. just before one they only have high top tables. Therefore, if you're in a wheelchair or your short, there are no regular height tables in the restaurant. That being said, I ordered the taro Boba tea, and the tapioca pearls were sludge. There was absolutely no shape to them, and they would not come up the very large straw. They were stuck, and they were gummy bits of. I'm not even sure what, but they were definitely not round, the Boba tea was mediocre at best. Let's move onto the pad Thai lunch. I asked for vegetable pad Thai and to have the vegetables cooked well. I didn't want crunchy vegetables instead of cooking them first and may be a little bit separate. They also cooked the noodles and whatever all that oil was and I received a dish of gelatinous pad, Thai noodles with Oily vegetables my side that came with the pad Thai was a spring roll, which I chose over the soup. It was the smallest spring roll. You ever did see. I actually thought it was missing from the bag as I only noticed the sauce in the bag overall, if you're going for pad Thai and you happen to be short definitely go to a different place if the food was stunning and spectacular I would recommend but the food that I ate was not. read more
