Across past few years, Mel and his team have done 3 small-to-medium home-repair jobs for me... ...and he/they have been able to provide fast response, fast turnaround, and impressive quality work each time. 1) install dryer vent through brick house wall to reduce moisture in finished basement. 1 day inspection; job started and done next day. 2) extract/replace a broken water spout fixture for our outdoor hose attachment. Inspected one day, fixed the next. 3) when our tub began leaking through the ceiling, he came SAME DAY and stopped leak, fixed the tub, patched and repainted the ceiling... He's always been friendly, honest, and fair in his business about what he can/will/not do, Glad to hear he's moving up toward more commercial site jobs. read more

This Contractor Melvin all I can initially begin with is wow ohhhh wow!!! JUST AS the previous reviewer expressed , this job was way to Big for him .. however he wanted to make the money so he said he had did this kind of remodel before and that wasn't true ...we selected him because of his price and claims he could do the job ..... i later found out his jobs were was mostly commercial or small sad home jobs HE WAS NICE WHEN ALL WAS GOING WELL ... but as soon as big goof ups happened with him and his subs , THE WHEELS FELL OFF MELVIN BECAME PETTY . ARGUMENTATIVE AND VERY JUVENILE!! I WAS SHOCKED!!! I WAS VERY SPECIFIC ABOUT WHAT I WANTED ... HE WAS NOT UP TO DATE ON A LOT OF MODERN DESIGN... Even trying to tell me certain things didn't exist until he would have to eat his words ... THE JOB ALSO WENT WAYYYY OVER THE SCHEDULE DATE TO HAVE FINISHED WHICH COST US MONEY ... He starting saying and doing things that weren't HONEST ... Like I said it started out well , but once he had to pay for MAJOR MISTAKES he got nasty and combative.... I wanted to give a black owned business a chance and boy did I regret doing that with THIS PARTICULAR BUSINESS.. They replaced the flooring (vinyl tiles) in a bathroom in our house; did an excellent job, which included removing and replacing a toilet and repairing water damage to the under-flooring. Did it in one day, at the quoted price. read more

These guys are EXCELLENT. They took my vandalized house and restored it to its previous glory. They were fair with pricing and reliably worked with other contractors like plumbers and electricians as needed. Much of the worry was removed in working with them. They even cleaned the place very well and took great care of the wood floors and new carpet. I am so glad we found this guys. We had three people come out from angies list and Melvin was the most thorough and professional. I would use them over and over again. read more

This was a big job, probably too big of a job for Melvin and his crew. Melvin couldn't finish the job. Actually, he refused to finish the job. Not only did he not finish the job, but he and his crew caused a lot of damage to my house. He destroyed my dishwasher, which he did give me a credit for. Although he didn't give me a full credit for the entire cost of the dishwasher. And, I didn't even try to get the same standard of dishwasher that his crew destroyed. His crew dented my refrigerator, dented my back door, stained my carpet by not covering it up, damaged my hard wood floor, chipped my counter top and left my backyard looking like a mess with paint and concrete all over my back patio, not to mention the mess they left all over the siding of my house. His crew punched a hole in my bedroom wall (which they repaired) they cracked a wall in my hallway (which they repaired). They came into my home like a wrecking ball with little to no care given to it. I entrusted Melvin with a key to my home. He made copies and handed them out multiple contractors, which I did not know about. When the dishwasher was replaced, he wanted his plumber to install it. It took his people three visits to my home PLUS a call to my own plumber to get this dishwasher installed. The main job was to add a powder room/laundry center to the first floor of the home. Part of this job was to install a Skylight in the powder room/laundry room. Well, the skylight leaked during a heavy rain and caused significant damage to a freshly painted room. Melvin and crew tried to repaint and repair it, but did a terrible job. When I insisted they try again, he refused. Working with Melvin has been very stressful. Melvin has a tendency to be extremely defensive and argumentative. He's even tried to extort more money from me, saying that he will not complete the project until I pay him final retainage. Retainage isn't released, until the work is 100% complete. When I made that very clear to him, I never heard from him again. Now, I am forced to hire another contractor to finish Melvin's job. I had very high hopes for this contract, but I am left with an unfinished and damaged home, which I will have to pay for. Oh, on top of all of that, the job was supposed to be done in 8 weeks. yes, there were some additions which extended the length of the project. BUT, his crew took about 23 weeks AND it's still not done. So, don't do it people. UPDATE: 9/12/2017 I also hired Melvin and company to install a new storm door. Melvin made a big deal out of the fact that my door was a custom size and it would cost extra. His exact words "a 30" door will be too small and a 32" door will be too big, since it's a custom size it will cost extra" Well, the door that Melvin installed was NOT the door I chose, I chose a self-storing storm door. He installed something that was not what I chose. I would understand if the door I chose didn't come in custom sizes, but he never told me that. Initially, I thought he just chose a door without consulting with me. Well, I just found out (when another door guy was measuring my opening to install the door that I wanted in the first place) that Melvin put in a 30" door and also installed a frame in my doorway to account for the fact that he was trying to install a door that was too small. So, not only did he lie to me about the custom door, but he also tried to charge me a custom door price. I'm in the process of consulting with an attorney on what my options are, legally.
