We first tried their cider on tap at King's Court Brewery in Poughkeepsie. Easy to find - a big yellow barn with ample parking. We stopped in on a December Saturday looking to have some drinks and check out the new space. We arrived just after they opened and were so impressed by the new, but rustic feel. There's a massive horseshoe bar, gender neutral bathrooms, bar games, firepits, many taps, and my favorite, RIVER VIEWS! The staff was welcoming and knowledgeable and recommended a few tasty styles of beer. Locust Grove makes their own cider and features beer from King's Court Brewery a few miles away. I recommend the Bat Exodus Nitro Stout. Had two and, as a Guinness fan, I thought this was far more flavorful. If stouts aren't your preference, they have many varieties of ales, IPAs, porters, and ciders. The cider isn't too sweet. I sampled a few and found them fruity, funky, and crushable without much sugar. Can't wait to visit again and pick up some swag. Locust Grove has shirts, beanies, and other branded items for purchase. If you're looking for outdoor space, know that they have 3 or 4 Solostove Stainless Firepits. These things are the best - high heat and no smoke. They "fired" it right up for us and before we knew it, three hours passed watching the river as the sun set behind us. PS - they have a legit shuffleboard table inside.

Although we've consumed lots (LOTS) of wine, we've never tried mead and with Lydia's review to back us up, we tried some and bought some too. (Which would be enjoyed later on in the day with cheese from Dancing Ewe and seckel pears from Migliorelli's, both of the Rhinebeck Market.) Don't pass up the chewy, delightful pretzel rolls! We bought several to give to our friends in NJ and they were a BIG hit. (Seasonal cranberry / apple and also sea salt. Also found at the New Paltz market.) There were fewer farmers at this market on this October Sunday but the produce vendors there had top quality items. And the friendly woman at the info booth at the end of the market was offering samples of home baked apple crisp as well as tastings of local applies. More to love about the Rosendale Market...ample parking. Yahoo! Were we HRV residents it would be a regular stop for us.

There is a nice selection of all kinds of annuals and perennials, but nothing extraordinary. In addition to the main area, be sure to check out all of the numbered greenhouses. It wasn't until after I had purchased over $250 worth of small plants that another customer told me about the greenhouses. I bought so many plants for hanging baskets and discovered that they had an entire greenhouse of hanging baskets for $20 each. Ugh. I absolutely would not have purchased all of those individual plants. The other thing is that the staff there isn't friendly. Maybe they are understaffed. No one approached us, or was able to help us. When we asked for a specific plant, they didn't know if they had them or not. Some of them we later found on our own. The other thing is that the plants aren't entirely grouped together. Most of the coleus plants are in the large main greenhouse, but what I was actually looking for was outside. Also, they charge for boxes. Wow. After spending over $250 for plants, they then charged me $.30 a box to carry them and put them in the car. This place is pretty good but I don't think I would return. I would rather go to a place like Adams where you can really get someone to help you out.

That happens, no biggie--right? The person at the counter was super-hostile, basically yelling that I'd ordered something else. I said I hadn't. She went into the back, and I thought she was going to get me the right one...then she came back and tried to charge me again. When I said I'd already paid, she pointed to the few bites of the wrong flavor I'd eaten, as if I was trying to pull one over. I was shocked at how hostile they were. So were the people with me. Honestly the low point of my Labor Day weekend. I recommend staying away.

We stopped in yesterday to pick up some tomatoes, which are in season now. Heirloom tomatoes are $6.00 a pound, and cherry tomatoes are $6.00 a pint. I really want to support the local farmers, but these prices are outrageous, obnoxious, and downright insulting. Other farms are $3 - $4 per pound. I cannot support price gouging.

My favorites this past summer and spring were their sugar snap peas, yellow watermelon, huge selection of greens, broccoli, cherry tomatoes, delicata squash, celery, scallions, salad mix, peppers, eggplants, zucchini, and more. I have to credit Taliaferro for almost single-handedly increasing my vegetable consumption from that of a picky child who eats only corn (I jest, sort of) to me claiming, last night, that I could be a vegetarian if for some reason I needed to... except for beef. I love the challenge of cooking seasonally with their offerings for the week, and they give you a push in the right directions with their newsletter, which lists recipes for some of the more unusual offerings each week.
