My friend was flying in to O'Hare and asked if we could meet somewhere for brunch off the blue line, so we decided on 5411 Empanadas. We had walked by it a few times before on our way to other venues, and were looking forward to finally do more than window shop. I opted for the breakfasty route - 1 ham & cheese, 1 bacon cheddar egg, 1 bacon & dates and for dessert, 1 banana & nutella. Although they advertise to be large enough to need two hands to hold, I thought they were kind of small...but not having had many empanadas, I don't know what to compare it to. Let me tell you, what they lack in size, they make up for in flavor. These were excellently prepared, not overcooked, just the right ratio of dough to filling. I also enjoyed that they are all shaped differently, so you can tell which one is which by what shape it is....with handy picture menus to assist. This place made me want to check out some other empanada places, to compare and contrast, but I will definitely be back, as this was a real treat! read more

The empanadas are pretty good. The Malbec beef and the bacon/date/goat cheese are my favorites. But the last two times I've gone, the service has been extremely messed up. The first time, about three weeks ago, my friend and I waited for 20 minutes (we were one of only two tables there) before I went up and asked about our order (4 empanadas) -- The girl behind the counter assured us that our food was 'almost ready, just a couple of minutes'. 10-15 minutes later, I went up to check again since other parties who had arrived long after us were receiving their food (and noticing that we hadn't) -- At this point we'd been waiting almost 45 minutes for 4 empanadas. Turns out our order had gotten "lost" -- So the girl (intentionally or unintentionally) lied to us about the order's status and never checked on it. We finally got our food and a voucher for a few free empanadas, but it was just a frustrating experience that took WAY too long. The second time, about a week later, I ordered for pickup (hoping to avoid another issue). When I walked in, there was a couple sitting at a table, and no one behind the counter. No big deal, it was a slow afternoon. But I stood there for about five minutes listening to the staff chatter in the kitchen before I kind of looked around the corner trying to make eye contact with an employee. After saying, "Hello? I'm here for pickup?" and waiting another few minutes, a guy finally came out and handed me my food with no apology or explanation as to why a customer stood there completely unacknowledged for ten minutes. Meh. Maybe I'll try another location. I don't feel like dealing with the aggravation of this one anymore. Friendly enough service, but just really lacking organization and tact. Losing orders and ignoring guests when they walk in is pretty amateur and this place has been around for over a year (I believe) -- They need to step it up. read more

I love empanadas and 5411 did not disappoint! They have so many different varieties to choose from that my hardest decision was which delicious sounding empanada to indulge in. I went with a spinach and cheese, BBQ chicken, and the sweet banana and nutella. They are perfectly cooked, juicy, and full of flavor! To top off my savory empanadas I got their homemade chimichurri sauce which was AMAZING! Each empanada is only $2.50, which isn't bad at all! The Wicker park location isn't huge, but I have never been to the other location so I can't compare. It has tables and a bar for customers with some beers on draft, wine, and spirits. The vibe was very chill and on the Friday afternoon I visited, it was very quiet. They also deliver, which I am seriously considering doing sometime soon... I love empanadas and this place didn't disappoint. Only thing I would say is go and get them fresh. I ordered them delivery and when they arrived they just weren't as hot and fresh as I would like. That's my bad though. The bacon date empanadas was a little too much on the bacon side and I didn't taste the sweetness I wanted. The chorizo ones have great tastes and the breakfast empanadas are great. They are just standard size so be prepared to just eat empanadas cause they don't have anything else on the menu. For me 4 was plenty for a meal though. read more

LOVE the Malbec beef empanadas. We also ordered sweet corn & mushroom, while all of the empanadas have perfect warm & flaky exterior, the fillings are a bit hit or miss. The mushroom had a strange off flavor which I couldn't put my finger on, and I'm a mushroom fiend that'll order anything mushroom on the menu. The sweet corn just tasted like green giant creamed corn in empanadas, so not too exciting. I liked the chimichurri sauce but wish we'd known each portion was enough for 2 so we could've ordered the spicy sauce as well. Oh well, until next time! The space was pretty much empty when we went on a Sunday afternoon and for some reason the AC was freezing in there, even though it wasn't even hot outside. The Wicker Park/Bucktown 5411 location is a great addition to the neighborhood. My boyfriend and I have been big fans of the original Lakeview establishment, so we were quite thrilled for it to open up. I'm Ecuadorian and we eat empanadas during special occasions and sometimes when the mood strikes us we will roll out some dough and fill it with deliciousness like (by not limited to) cheese or bananas. Then we fry them. This place on the other hand bakes them and the wait time is about 8 minutes. You cannot beat quality Ingredients for only 2.50 a pop. The Bartenders when I was there were super laid back, fun to talk to, and very attentive while sitting at the bar. This place is tiny, only downside, but it rotates quickly. They have a nice take on their version of empanadas offering various meat, vegetarian, and desert options. So there's something for everyone. I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to Latino "inspired" food, but these guys did well! It's nothing to be like "oh my god, this empanada is life changing" but the price point is decent, they had good flavor, and it's a little different from your traditional empanada. So good! We had tried a couple of empanadas from the food truck and were very exited when we saw they had a restaurant in Wicker Park. The place is very small but super nice and cozy. The beef ones are delicious, but my favorite one was the bacon, goat cheese, and dates one. It sound like a weird combination but it really works. The ham and cheese was good too. The spinach and cheese was pretty disappointing, but not terrible. I do find it weird that they charge you for sauces when you dine in, I get that they charge for carry outs and deliveries because they have to give you that little tub, but they could have a big bottle for dine-ins. We bought the spicy one and threw away almost half of it, because it was too much and it didn't go with all the empanadas. But in the end, the empanadas are so good it doesn't really matter. This place is a MAJOR winner! We ordered this in for takeout and were not disappointed. First off, the empanadas themselves are baked and not fried, so there is no greasiness and the texture and softness of the pastry crust is phenomenal. Next, the selection is just incredible. There is definitely something for everyone- fancier options like date, bacon, and goat cheese for a more sophisticated pallet or simple beef for a simpler one. The wine is very good and servings are generous. My boyfriend and I split 5 empanada for a semi-light lunch. They were all incredible!!! We want to go back super hungry and order one of each listed on the menu. My husband and I used to come here and hadn't in about a year or so. We were disappointed to find that the empanadas were not shaped according to flavor and they did not taste as good as they used to. We were disappointed with sweet corn, Nutella/Banana and beef, which we threw away. The recipe in the corn and beef were different than previously remembered and the banana/Nutella had ripe bananas in it which was very hard to eat. When my delivery order was 30 minutes late I thought it was time to call the store. They told me the delivery guy was out with my order and it would arrive momentarily. After another 30 minutes went by without any empanadas I called back again. Apparently my order was "delivered," so somebody got some free empanadas. Unfortunately the store made things worse... They only offered to resend my order, which would take another hour on their delivery schedule. They would not offer to expedite a replacement order to get it to me quickly. The empanadas were delicious, I am a veggie so I got the sweet corn and spinach and cheese, both great but I favored the sweet corn. My boyfriend got the two beef ones and loved them - their hot sauce and chimmichuri is great too! We asked the person behind the counter for suggestions and he wasn't too helpful. I always like to ask servers their favorites/most popular when it is my first time going somewhere and appreciate some guidance or suggestions, responding with "it's up to you, they are different" wasn't really helpful, dawg.
