At the time, this was an amazing empanada spot. I had the sweet corn empanada and the bacon, dates, and goat cheese (BDG) empanada. The sweet corn good but nothing is more flavorful than the BDG. If you like bacon wrapped dates with goat cheese, there's no way you wouldn't love this. So rich and flavorful that you don't even need the hot sauce or chimichuri sauce with it. I also tried the chorizo one, which I really liked, and the malbec beef, which definitely didn't live up to the hype as i didn't find it very flavorful. Don't come here if ravenously hungry for a cheap lunch/dinner. Come here for a date/drinks/casual hangout with good friends when you want to avoid a bar. For $2.50 each, an empanada might seem a bit steep and arduous of an on-demand 8 minute toasting. But once it arrives in front of you, piping hot, you realize you have to wait 2 more minutes before you can shove it in your mouth and have it disappear in 3 bites because the filo pastry exterior is just that satisfying. The ingredients are extremely fresh and the cheese/sauce-to-ingredient ratio is perfect. Fernet on tap for $6 is pretty rad and I look forward to trying that too. Since I've never had luck catching their truck anywhere, it was nice to see they finally opened this 2nd location, which coincidentally the first time I came here, I discovered by accident since I was originally gonna go to Sultan's Market. Except for the malbec beef one(the sauce was slightly weird to me, but wasn't terrible), I liked all the other ones I've tried so far. Sweet corn, chroizo and patatas bravas, ham and cheese, and ratatouille being my fav ones so far. I'd like to try bacon and goat cheese, mushroom and blue cheese, and the banana and nutella ones on a future visit. -1 star for not being BYOB though. The beer menu is short, slightly overpriced, and really I'd prefer that over a very limited beer menu, though to their credit isn't a macro-dominated beer list. I only ordered two, which was a good snack and enough to keep you satisfied. Bacon and dates are always a good combo between the sweet and fat taste, add the goat cheese and woooohoeeee! If you don't like goat cheese, I'd still recommend trying it, the goat cheese taste isn't prominent or overpowering. It gives it the nice creamy texture for the filing alongside the bacon fat. Great flavor. The malbec beef was good too. It was shredded beef instead of ground beef which is what I usually encounter with beef empanadas. None the less still good. We also ordered the flan, but to be honest, there was no wow factor to it. It was a big chunk of caramel on top of flan and the flan was very bland on it's own (which makes sense with the amount of caramel on top of it). Would I get it again? Probably not. Would I recommend it? Egh, if you're a flan connoisseur, then I'd say go for it to get your opinion on it. Otherwise you could make without it. In terms of the food, the empanadas are good. They have a good variety. But never get it delivered! First, they don't label the empanadas you get so if you order more than two you have to physically cut into them to figure out what is what. It makes it very hard when you order for multiple people. Tasty empanadas. Ordered around a hundred or so assorted empanadas for an event, so I was really able to get a taste of a lot of different ones. The ones I remember having were as follows: Caramelized Onion Sweet Corn Ham & Cheese Chorizo & Patatas Bravas Bacon, Dates & Goat Cheese Mushroom, Thyme & Blue Cheese Ratatouille Malbec Beef Beef Chorizo, black bean & Egg Banana and Nutella All of them were solid empanadas, but the real star was the bacon, dates & goat cheese, with the ratatouille and the mushroom, thyme & Blue cheese as good runner ups. While all of them were enjoyable, it was really those former 3 that I feel set apart 5411 from the other baked empanadas I've had before. Normally these empanadas would run around $2.50 per, but with the groupon you can grab 24 of them for $38(or about $1.70 each), which actually makes it a pretty solid deal. It's not too hard to polish off 5-6 of these in a single serving, so given groupon pricing you can actually get decently full off a good variety of tasty empanadas, at a fairly affordable price. read more

I've been wanting to try this place and I am a member of the gym across the street so I stopped in last Sunday after a workout, and picked up some empanadas to go. I really like the concept and I thought what we had was good, but could have been better with a couple tweaks. First off, they only serve hot sauce and chimichurri sauce. Given all the different kinds of empanadas, those sauces don't go with the flavor of many of the empanadas, at least in my opinion. Also, a couple of the flavor profiles tasted very simlar, which was a little disappointing. I sound like this was a bad experience, but that's not true. We did enjoy several of the empanadas and will stop in again. And I'm not a big eater. If you come here for a snack that'll be the right approach. Not a cheap snack, however. Also you gotta wait at least ten minutes for these things to bake. Small little place with ultra modern and clean decor. Bar with room for about 4-5 people and chairs and a bench along the window to eat. We bellied up to the bar and where they had a variety of wines available and four different beers on tap. All local brews. They have a dozen different varieties of empanadas to choose from and we ordered four - bbq chicken, steak, cheese and spinach and the game and cheese. All were excellent and total comfort food - my favorite food. If it weren't for my wife and dinner reservations later, I would have gorged myself and attempted to eat all 12 flavors. Each were the size of a fist and baked to perfection. Took me back to when I was a kid and would pig out on Gino's frozen pizza rolls. These are a BIG step up, of course, from my frozen pizza rolls days and I can also now wash these down with local craft beer rather than with Sunkist Orange pop like I did back in the day. I am so excited I discovered this place a few nights ago. First, the atmosphere: It's a very small place where you seat yourself and get your own silverware and water. They have a small but decent selection of wine and beer. The decor is nice for the casual atmosphere. Food: It took me a bit to adjust to the concept of baked empanadas, but it was certainly worth it. My favorite fillings are the caramelized onion and the malbec beef-- perhaps not the most traditional of empanada fillings, but delicious nonetheless. Best of all are the prices. This place has amazing empanadas! I love them. However, it's hard to look over the terrible beer they serve. The brands are fine. It's the flavor of the beer they serve. When you have visually dirty glasses and what appears to be dirty lines or old beer the beer comes out either tasting like something that is sour and/or oxidized flavor then you know something is wrong. I'm a bit disappointed to be honest. Starting with the positives though...I like the location of this place, being in the heart of Wicker Park. I thought the ambience/space was cute and quaint and there was plenty of seating if you wanted to eat there. I also liked that they had beer/cocktail options if it's that kind of night for you. I tried the spinach/cheese, sweet corn, and banana/nutella empanadas. My favorite was definitely the spinach/cheese and banana/nutella. The sweet corn was neither here nor there. Which brings me to the negatives...I also ordered the egg and cheese and was mistakenly given the bacon/egg/cheese. At the register I asked the cashier if the empanadas were definitely all vegetarian, and he said yes there are four vegetarian empanadas in the box. By the time I got home and bit into the bacon/egg one it was too late to turn around and get the right order, and I also consumed bacon unknowingly. It would have been nice if the cashier took the time to double check the order. I also didn't love how the empanadas weren't labeled, it was a bit of a free for all. The menu is straight forward $2.50 per empanada. They come in diff shapes and sizes per flavor. My favorite was the Fig Goat cheese with bacon. This place has won me over so far. Continued amazingness and it has potential for a 5-star win. It was not very busy when we walked in, and was very clean. While we didn't drink we did try a few empanadas. The Bacon, Dates, and Cheese was my favorite. And has me craving more a few days later. The Nutella Banana one was ok, but not entirely my thing. The boyfriend tried the Chorizo Empanada, and the Spinach and Cheese.... both of which he thoroughly enjoyed. The atmosphere was classy but very easy going and casual, with self serve station for water,utensils, and napkins. The price point was perfect for what we got. 2.50 for one empanada isn't super cheap but definitely is not over priced. The only complaint I have is that the two sauces they offer are 50 cents each.... for a very small cup of it. Nothing that will break the bank but if you're going to charge anything for a sauce it should at least be a fairly big serving of it. Overall would definitely recommend. read more
