Steamed rice rolls with curry fish balls - get all the sauces! (small)
    Winni C.

One thing I miss about living in NYC is delicious and CHEAP street food. For $4.50, I can get a decent serving of curry fish balls with steamed rice rolls/cheung fun, and a preserved egg and pork congee! How can you beat that price?! This food isn't about the presentation or top-notch quality ingredients. They ain't got time for that. Literally, the lovely couple here whips up a super inexpensive and delicious meal/snack for you in just mere minutes and you'll be happily on your way. Man, if I still lived in Brooklyn, I'd eat this every day if I could!

Chicken stick w. Little bit of hot sauce
    Shirley Y.

The uncle and auntie is always nice and friendly. They even remember me even we didn't see each other for over half a year (I bounce between NY & NOLA). We would have casual chit chat about what we have been up to. They used to just sell chicken stick (like way way way back) and I would order at least $5-10 worth (I blame that on puberty). The taste is still the same one back when I was a kid. Now they expanded their menu. Sometimes I would order tofu, mini sausage and/or fish balls but my go to is the chicken stick (sometimes a little hot sauce) and cheung fun (w. the peanut and hoisin sauce). Sometimes I would ask for more sauce (they won't charge you). The cheung fun is not the fresh one where you can at some stores (it's those thick ones that you can probably get in big supermarkets) but it's good enough for me. I think they are in a perfect location. It start to get chaotic the more you walk up (too many people & too many garbage). I feel like this street cart is more cleaner & organized than the ones up the streets.

Sorry! I know it is a bad picture!

Although it's not the traditional Taiwanese version I'm used to (with cabbage and carrots), I really like the lady's variation! (She uses shredded pickled daikon and carrots). I also ask for all the sauces and it's not too spicy either! I've only spoken Mandarin each time I ordered from her, I'm not sure if she speaks English or not. However, if you're a none Mandarin speaker, definitely speak up or grab her attention somehow to order since it can get chaotic sometimes if she's busy and she doesn't always remember who was first in line. She's very friendly!! I have gotten her stinky tofu at least five times since moving to Brooklyn and I've never gotten sick from it. Don't be intimidated by the street carts!

OVERVIEW: In many countries, it's not unusual for locals…read moreto eat two, or even three meals at street food stalls. This is not surprising, as many of these vendors can offer a hot, and delicious meal quickly, and for a relatively reasonable price. So, if you happen to be near Brooklyn Chinatown's famous 8th Ave, come visit Lotus Sister Food Cart. You'll experience the unique charm and feel of an authentic street food cart. And, at the same time, grab a quick tasty snack, or even a meal for a few people. For close to a decade it's been located on the corner of 57th Street and 8th Ave. And by chance, it's diagonally across 8th Ave from "Tofu Stall", another very interesting street vendor to visit. Keep in mind, that what's primarily being served here are quick eats, such as skewers, fried chicken, noodles, and dumplings. But this doesn't take away from the fact that the food here is delicious, and crazy fun to order and eat. WHAT TO ORDER: - The cheung fun rice noodle rolls are standard, but very good, and can be topped with fish balls, or curry fish balls. Of course peanut sauce and hot sauce can be added. - All the skewers are good, especially the chicken, chicken wing, fish tofu, fish balls, and others. - Their famous fried chicken legs are one of the best items, and are really crispy, with a hint of five spice flavor. Absolutely delicious. - The lo mien and rice noodles are tasty, but even better when topped with some of the skewers, or maybe some hot sauce. - The stinky tofu is a mild version, which is good to order if you like it, or if your trying it for the first time. - The dumplings are pork and chive, and are tasty, even though they are deep fried. - Plain cheung fun noodles, fried tofu puffs and other items are available in bulk, to take home and use in your own cooking. SERVICE: I really like the Auntie that runs this cart. She is friendly, to the point, and keeps things moving quickly, so everyone receives their order in a timely manner. When you're ordering, she always offers something additional for you to try, that she feels you will enjoy. She speaks Chinese and English, and is also happy to take your order by the point at the food or menu method if necessary. PARTING THOUGHTS: If I'm close to 8th Ave, hungry, and I don't feel like ordering from a restaurant, I can't pass up this auntie's food cart. Hell, just the smelll of her frying her famous chicken legs, is enough to catch your attention from almost a block away. So go visit her, and grab some chicken legs or cheung fun, and, what ever other tasty treats she convinces you to order. You'll be happy afterwards, I promise.

Unfortunately a lot of the rolls we wanted to get like beef brisket and curry fish balls ran out, also too is the sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaf. We ended up settling for roast pork rice roll, and a beef version, and lastly fish ball version. They make it from scratch which is nice to see while the ingredients are chopped up to small pieces. I do wish they put more ingredients in but for the price they charge (average of $2.75 per roll), no complaints there. There is one small table outside to eat in but no indoor seating or bathroom. I would give 3 strong stars.

It seems like they're offering grand opening prices at the moment--someone who can read Chinese might be able to confirm that. I tried the fresh pork roll with egg, scallions, and cilantro for just $3. The rice noodles were smooth and soft, the proportions of ingredients to rice roll were well-balanced, and the soy sauce was flavorful. I enjoyed every bite!

I put it in my mouth, and that's what happened. I inhaled the whole thang down. Then I looked at what I had done, and it was good. I think the vendor's secret must be either using Hebrew National or injecting liquid into the hot dog, because it's so moist and juicy when you bite into it. The amount of condiments and kraut is just right.

For $2, I enjoyed my first real meal of the day and the first in NYC in 2 years - a dog with spicy mustard and sauerkraut. And it was good, people. Reeeal good. Made well enough that mustard didn't squirt out all over me and peg me as the lame-o Midwesterner posing as a slick kitty from the city for a day. Delicious enough to soothe my empty stomach (yes, it's true - sauerkraut can soothe! Who knew?). I think I mentioned in my Renegade Craft Fair review that I purchased an "I [picture of Chicago-style hot dog] Chicago" t-shirt, which has led my husband and me to add "I hot dog Chicago" to our vernacular. Now I can say I hot dog New York, too.

I would suggest: made to cook skewers :) Yes, the cart looks a little sketch on the corner of 61st and 8th, but I'll assure that the food is legit, yummy and cheap. With a variety of options offered from typical beef / chicken / pork, you can get gizzard, squid, lamb and other stuff. Prices range from $1-4 and the portions are appetizer sized (meaning they're not huggggge but enough to satisfy a temporary craving). Simply walk up to the cook, tell him what you want and wait for your turn. For the most part, I'll assume this is a cash only place. So make sure to bring your ones and coins to make the transaction easier! Also, highly recommend the spicy powder on your food. Quite tasty with a pow.

Once I found out the page existed, I used it as an excuse to drive down here to "do some research" to make sure that the quality is still the same before I could give the place a fair review. Yep, still one of the better BBQ meat on a stick carts around. The great thing about this place is that they marinate everything very well and it shows with each bite that you take. Once cooked over charcoal, they sprinkle a generous amount of cumin seasoning to everything then they ask if you want chili powder added on top of it. For me, the answer is always a yes for the chili powder. The choices on a stick here is beef, lamb, chicken wing, tofu, fish balls, and hot dog. My favorite is the lamb (really tender), but the tofu, beef, and chicken wing isn't too far behind. Everything is a dollar a stick except for the chicken wing, which costs $1.50 each. This is as cheap as good street food gets. It's very small though so it's only good for a snack or else you would have to buy a lot to fill yourself up.
