Aggie's is a fun, hip bakery and cake shop that been around for a really long time. I was excited to finally try a "cake shop" although I didn't get cake on this trip, I would try another time! There's a great seating area, a nice display of all the baked good made fresh that morning, and an opportunity to grab a cup of coffee too. I had asked the person working behind the display what their most popular baked goods were and I was met with silence and then a "everything is good." I was slightly peeved by my interaction here and didn't let it fully deter my review of the baked goods themselves. I had the apple dumpling after seeing decent reviews about it on Yelp. The pastry wasn't at all flaky or buttery but rather hard and biscuit-like. Maybe I went in with the wrong expectation of what an apple dumpling was but it wasn't what I had wanted exactly. It leaned more sweet and glaze heavy than it did cinnamon spice. Overall, would recommend checking out Aggie's for their longstanding history in the Milwaukee area. It just wasn't for me!

I especially love their "kindness coupons"--such a thoughtful gesture for anyone who could use a little treat. I attended one of their macaron classes, and while I don't know what their kitchen looked like before, it had been fully transformed into a student-friendly workspace with stations set up for each group. After signing in, you're directed to your station and handed an apron. The spots are semi-assigned--if you booked with a friend or a small group, Kasey does a great job placing you together. Everything you need is laid out and ready to go. Kasey walks you through the whole process, checking in along the way and sharing helpful tips she's picked up throughout her macaron-making journey. You and your partner split the batter, but you each get to do your own mixing, choose your colors, and pipe your own shells, which makes it a really hands-on experience. While the macarons are baking, you're treated to sweet bites like brownies or crispy rice treats. Once the macarons have cooled, you fill, package, and--of course--sneak a few tastes along the way. The whole class is so fun, approachable, and well-paced. Afterward, you even get the chance to take home some bakery goodies at a discount! A friend had heard that they had gotten some flack from the local Republicans for being pro-LGBT and that was enough for us to go pay them a visit. Staff were wonderful and friendly, even suggesting that I get the Wicked-themed matcha latte with strawberry cold foam, something that I did not think I would necessarily like, but she pushed it hard and you know what? She was right! It was a delicious drink that I may or may not have licked the lid to ensure I got all of the cold foam... My ham and cheese croissant was quite good, though I think it would have been better had it been warmed up. And then I went back for a Scotcheroo and that was fantastic. I had intended to just have a bite that morning and finish it later but there was no way I could do that, I ended up eating the entire thing while we were visiting. Outside of the room temp croissant, the reason for four stars instead of five here is because the bakery gets VERY cold everytime the door opens, I probably should have kept my coat on the whole time we were there. I think one of those ceiling-mounted air units would help mitigate this and get me to stay a bit longer (and order more food!) in the colder months.

In addition to the bakery items, they also carry party supplies such as cards, decorations, and napkins, along with packaged chocolate confections. Why make visiting hard when you can always grab a full cake or individual-sized treats ready-made for you? I love the variety I can choose from. Using their website for ordering pickup in advance was a bit of a frustrating experience, with it not acknowledging the selected bakery and having to restart the entire order (though I am not faulting this location for the franchise's technology failures). I finally was able to confirm a pickup time and place and made our way there at that time. There was no one in the bakery when we arrived, including staff, though someone did come out shortly after and I gave them my name for the order. They reappeared quickly and handed me my bag--for the price of these desserts, I was expecting a little nicer presentation than a thin paper bag with a Nothing Bundt Cakes sticker securing the bag. Also absent were any kind of instructions; are these to be kept refrigerated, or should they be brought to room temperature? I asked and received the answer, but what if I hadn't thought to ask? As far as taste is concerned, they were good little cakes, maybe a touch small for the price and the lack of presentation. They often have BOGO deals and I might take that approach if I decide to get these again in the future.
