Most other hotels/motels looked basically the same so it was nice to see something different here. There were definitely some spots which could benefit from some fresh paint or something but it wasn't a big deal. The check-in process was on the other hand more modern. Not "we have an app" modern but they have keypad locks on all the room doors so check-in was handled through a text message (which included the door code). A phone call was also an option but texting was easier for me because we were on the road and didn't always have reception. Text messages also mean all the info would be available if I needed to check it later. We were only there to sleep so we didn't need any assistance, but if anything came up we would have had to call or text the manager since there was nobody on-site. Hopefully in those cases they can respond and/or show up quickly. We do sometimes have good conversations with the front desk people but a quick simple check-in is also great. The bed was comfortable and the shower worked well. The one surprise in the room was that the tv was on when we walked in. I'm not used to that but we noticed that Top Gun: Maverick was on so we ended up watching it.

The Lamar has everything a family could need including a great kitchen for making memorable meals (I love to cook and found all the supplies I needed), ample space for hanging out with and without your family, and all the modern conveniences travelers expect (there's even Wifi). The dining area provided a wonderful start to the day with a cup of coffee and a gorgeous view of the mountains. The propane grill off the back deck made dinnertime easy. In addition to hot springs Chico has a riding stable and adventure company for white water, scenic floats and hiking. This is nice if you don't want to drive to Gardiner some days. There is also a nice hike to a falls just up the road from the cabin. The cabin itself was excellent. We were there on some hot days and the cabin stayed cool if you closed the blinds as instructed. There was a full kitchen and while fussy cook husband might have wanted sharper knives for prep work he managed to make some fine meals. He also used the charcoal grill but the black flies were thick in the heat. Better him than me! Happily the long porch facing the stream is fully screened. No biting things there. The porch had a casual dining table and glider bench. The cabin had two bedrooms and one and a half baths. The half bath was in a utility room which included a washer and dryer. Priceless! There was also a comfy living room with two sofas and a glider chair. We never used the TV but it was there too. The cabin had wifi thankfully because there wasn't much cell reception. Basically it was a great place to get away, listen to the creek at night and relax.
