When we entered the building they had a historical video playing. They took us through a quick tour of the whole building, then brought us back to the start to explore on our own. We had lots of rich paranormal activity through flashlights and the Estes method. My sister's roomate saw a shadow figure. All four of us heard voices in the body chute, but nobody was at the bottom. In another part of the building is also a haunted house and an escape room, but we didn't do any of that.

TB was widespread in the area, resulting in a waiting list to stay at the sanatorium. Despite its name, Waverly Hills was not a mental hospital; a sanatorium is any institution that provides treatment and convalescence for chronic illnesses. Our tour guide was a member of the Historical Society. The experience included a guided tour where we were lead, at least partially, across all 5 floors and we also had the chance to look down the body chute. Waverly Hills has a reputation as one of the most haunted places in America and has been featured on ghost hunting shows as "Ghost Hunters," "Ghost Adventures," "Paranormal Lockdown," and "Buzzfeed Unsolved." There were some 30 of us in the tour... the historical stories shared with us were interesting and cool but I did not feel any of the following: full grabs, see shadows, apparitions, or shadow people, feel permanent residents walking up to people, taps, temp changes-cold spots, or hotspots, heard screams, footsteps nor door slamming. Too many people on our tour but I can't complain because we were just lucky to get in as extras. The haunt has several stands in the line for you to read about the story and a video screen showing movie clips. The actors were fantastic. They made the line as much fun as the haunt. We loved watching them startle incoming guests. Before going in a group picture is taken and you can buy the copy for $5. Overall, several rooms to walk through and they've really made it full of animatronics. I didn't want to walk too fast because there was a lot to appreciate - even if it meant extra attention from the scare team. There's other fun areas you're "locked" into with a character and they get real close. Some areas of caution. It is built within an industrial building and there's a few steps and bumps along the path. They tell you not to run for a reason. One area is full of strobe lights and smoke - I had zero visibility. Thankfully my kids realized I was disoriented and grabbed my hand to pull me through or I'd still be there! The finale of the haunt is what adds my fifth star. A gift shop of clothing and decor, a snack truck, animals from a sanctuary to pet, desserts to indulge in - plus an escape room. We spent just as much time enjoying this and everyone was so friendly. I thought that was weird because I think on their site they said that they were only putting people with their groups and not combining. The best thing is that the actors cannot touch you. I know haunted houses this year are weird but we still have to enforce these things especially with rates skyrocketing. Now to the scares... I had a blast. It was my sons first time at a haunted house and he kinda enjoyed himself. He was scared lol and I thought that was funny too. I convinced him to go because I told him that they can't touch you this year. Best time to go!! The beginning is what got us. They lined us up in this room and then turned all the lights off. It was pitch black. When the lights came on, the actors were standing right in front of us. You couldn't even hear them come in. That scared my son so bad. I knew this was going to be great lol. There is a lot of character interaction which is another unique thing about this haunt. They also keep you spaced out so you are not running into other groups which has happened at some of the haunts I ve been to and it kinda ruins them if you get put in a big group. I can not recommend this place enough. I drove almost an hour to get there and it was well worth the drive. I will be back next year.

We did not pay for the fast pass options and had very minimal waits, but that may have been because it was early October. I've been later in the month before and definitely wished our group had bought them, although standing in the lines can be entertaining in itself and actors are often strolling by and interacting with people. Keep the weather and the terrain (lots of dirt paths) in mind. Cash-only venue (they do have ATMs on site).

My only complaint on the maze would be some areas are dark and inside some of the buildings are confusing and we went the wrong way a couple times. lol. However they could have more people in some of the buildings. I think 3/4 buildings were completely empty while others had 2/5 people inside and out. Also they have some strobe lights so bright and directly in your face. The worse part was the crawl space in the barn, it was kinda pointless and very dark. My favorite was the slide leaving the barn. It's very steep and kinda fast so if you don't like that then I would recommend the steps but for me that part was fun. Some of the actors really put time into what they do while others just sit there or stand there. Overall I spent $120 for two people and had a decent time. Only got scared twice & that's because you can kinda tell when they're gonna jump out or where they're gonna be standing lol. We went at 9:45 and left a little after 1AM. I would definitely recommend spending the extra money and getting the fast pass. I feel like most of my time I was standing in lines.

We opted for the 9:30 tickets on a Thursday, arrived around 9:15 and finished the trail at 10pm. I was disappointed that the gift shop and the food trucks were closed at 10pm when there were still people on the trail. I would have looked to look at the merch while eating a warm treat.

My kids keep getting older and this year meant redefining our Halloween events during October. A…read morehaunted house was definitely on the list and I wanted to visit Nightmare Forest for a bigger experience. It's a longer drive but also an outdoor event that tends to offer more scenes for a similar ticket cost. We went on a Saturday night and got there around 8:30-9p. The staff told us the crowd picks up after 10p. They helped to safely park cars and it was a quick walk to the ticket sales booth and entrance. Pro Tips: buy tickets online!! There's a small fee but reasonable. We saw people waiting in a long line for tickets, only to turn around and wait in line for the haunted experience. Do the Fast Pass!! You truly pass the bulk of the crowd and go to the front of the line. Even at our time, if we'd stood in the regular line my guess is it would've been an hour or more. We waited 5-10 minutes at the most. Wear comfy clothes, and not your best shows. You're outside, it's dark and full of dust and leaves. No reason to dress to impress. Bring extra dollars. They had refreshments and drinks, plus a few activities like axe throwing, bonfire and side show items for pictures. Like a small circus sideshow. They also sell a bit of branded apparel. The scenes were nicely done, and we walked slow on purpose to appreciate the animatronics. They strategize the scenes well to give the actors opportunities to scare you more than once. Lots of wall turns and lights, plus places to hide. I'd confuse which ones were fake versus real people! I'm so glad we came and made this one of our fall activities. I'd recommend it to others!
