On a chilly Sunday while passing through Washington Square Park a friend and I decided to grab a drink. We were lucky to pass by this spot and decided to check it out. It being in a basement like level was pretty cool and inside the vibe was dark and cozy it was perfect. We ordered the sauv blanc bottle to split and the whole service was fantastic and the bottle delicious. Our server was sweet and knowledgeable as well, but there was a bit of miscommunication about our cheese tray. I went here for a happy hour with a friend and the experience was beyond lovely (even though we were outside in the cold, because ya know... covid). We were given really warm blankets because we were sitting outside. Our waitress was fantastic and really knew her wines and cheeses. She was able to provide us with really coherent tasting notes for all the wines we asked about. Also $8 glasses for happy hour! We ended up getting a cheeseboard and two different reds. On a recent unseasonably mild night we camped out at the 8th Street Wine Cellar, ordered a bottle of Gamay from the Loire Valley and waited for our friends to wander in. Over the course of the evening we ended up getting a number of bottles of that same easy goin' Gamay (one of the nicest priced bottles on the menu, I might add!) We toasted a friend who'd rung the closing bell that day at the New York Stock Exchange. We toasted yelpers from San Francisco and a visitor from Las Vegas. We toasted the new direction of our nation. When we became peckish, we ordered up the meatballs and the pigs in a blanket. Both provided tasty sustenance. My advice? Come early to the 8th Street Wine Cellar and grab a table in the back nearest the ever growing altar made of candle wax and empty wine bottles.
