How did this station get worse!? I was just in LA over the weekend and tuned it onto 947 The Wave to discover that they don't even play a single jazz song anymore. It's all R&B and rap now. Accidentally stumbled upon 94.7 in the HD2 channels and love what they've been playing. More of a DJ set vibe with good transitions between tracks and a focus on a variety of house music. Very refreshing to hear on FM radio, keep it up please! read more

Once upon a time, this station may have played jazz, but after hearing "win tickets to see Boyz II Men" as I had just tuned into 94.7 FM, my jazz-listening hopes were diminished. I love love love jazz. Especially in a car. In traffic. Al Green. Sade. I didn't hear GQ, but I'm familiar with that group. RIP Keith "Sabu" Crier. For the record, "I Do Love You" is SOUL MUSIC. Not Jazz! (A Yelper back on 10/18/19 mentioned this song and The WAVE as "a tired [jazz] station" that played it.) I can dig everything The WAVE played, but not the more pop-ish shtuff. This radio station is indeed a fraud! so today they emailed me and told me it will take three months to receive my winnings which I find unacceptable. They do not tell you this but apparently, it is in the contest rules. I will not be listening to this station anymore! She could be a lot better if she stops talking about herself and her life so much.. People are not interested in her relationships neither her mental health it's really a turn off. The wave format has changed. The d.j. on in the early morning is horrible. She talks too much, and doesn't play much music. I enjoy listening to the wave in the afternoon and evening hours. At least some of the d.j's play great music which the wave is noted for. Seriously, I wake up to it every morning and enjoy nothing more than lying in my comfy bed listening to jams like Lionel Ritchie's "All Night Long" or the Doobie Brothers "Takin It To The Street." I grew up listening to the wave, so I have fond, fond memories of it. I loved all the different types of jazz they played and discovered many artists I've come to love FROM listening to The Wave! It saddens me to see the direction that the station has gone in. First they let go of Keri Tombazian (an absolute GODDESS to listen to on the airwaves) and now they're "Smooth R&B"?? Should've known there was something up when they started playing Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" despite it's harsh criticism and controversy. I hate to sound over dramatic here, but I guess that marks the end of an era. Time to look for another station to tune in to. I'm really saddened by the direction this station has gone. This station use to be smooth Jazz. The playlist would consist of talented artists such as Sade, Kenny G, Dave Coz, Chris Botti, Carlos Santana, and other notable performers and musicians. Now this station is smooth adult contemporary and plays Usher, Beyonce, and Maroon 5. And while I like those artists, I do not appreciate them on a jazz radio. . . Musically, I would describe myself as "eclectic". I like a bit of everything from country to classical. Once upon a time, however, it wasn't cool to listen to oldies music, jazz, etc. The sanctioned picks "back in the day" --- high school and college, for me --- were Top 40 and Alternative. Boy am I glad things have changed. Now everything from old school vinyl to Pandora is in. And yet, as musically open-minded as I am, even I have my limit to how much musical randomness I can tolerate in a single day (besides, there's my iPod for that!). IMHO, a local radio station should evoke a mood. This one used to. Now 94.7 the WAVE just sounds... confused. Many moons ago, when "new age music" was new to LA, I got turned on to KTWV. I was drawn to the fusion between world/ethnic influences, futuristic "chill out" tracts and jazzy rock-'n-roll beats (with great bass). Nearly all content emphasized instrumentals over vocals. In particular, if you didn't want to hear a love song or a broken heart song every five minutes --- yet didn't want to fall asleep to classical --- this was THE station to tune into. The vibe felt very fresh, urban and sophisticated, the kind of station every major city should have. I wish I could say the Greater Los Angeles area still had a station this novel. Today, most of the DJs I listened to on the WAVE in the late '80s/'90s and early 2000s have been supplanted by talent that apparently came over from KBIG/KOST. Perhaps not surprisingly, the disc jockeys play music much more in tune with the stations from which they came. It's not even clear if any of them like "smooth jazz". Has it really come to this? Sadly, yes. Similar to others who have complained here on YELP, CBS has apparently chosen to move away from smooth jazz to an adult contemporary format. Even by AC standards, however, KTWV broadcasts an inordinate hodgepodge of music --- to the point where if I don't see or hear the call signs I can't always identify what station I'm hearing just by listening. Mixing it up would be more tolerable but for the fact that new smooth jazz albums by well-known artists frequently receive little to no air time. Not until I began tuning into Pandora and MusicChoice on cable TV did I realize how much new material (and artists) I've missed. Given that the LA area is home to many smooth jazz artists, from David Benoit to former guest DJ Dave Koz, it seems like a slap in the face of both the artists and their fans to so completely turn the programming away from who and what BUILT the station's fan base (and no, we aren't all over the hill --- many such "regulars" are in that cherished demographic advertisers seek). Nonetheless, it has devolved to the point where, when the occasional smooth jazz song airs, it's not only a shock but typically a "classic" --- such as "Smiles and Smiles to Go" by Larry Carlton --- which is great except for the fact that very little of the smooth jazz that airs showcases (or sells) current albums. Diagnosis: 94.7 the Wave is suffering from a midlife IDENTITY CRISIS. Rx: The station owners need to decide who their TARGET MARKET is. As it stands, the programming is neither compelling to the 20-30 set --- there are better rock, pop and R&B stations on the dial --- nor to the 40+ demographic. I've made my thoughts known to WAVE management via email. Naturally, they did not respond. Perhaps if enough people chime in on YELP, CBS will get the point? In a nutshell, 94.7 the WAVE is trying to be all things to all people --- satisfying fewer and fewer listeners within any of the genres it haphazardly cobbles together. It's to the point where it sounds like station management dumped everything into iTunes and turned on the "genius" feature --- crossing their fingers that nobody will notice that it's essentially a mind-free mix. I feel bad for listeners and advertisers alike. Los Angeles needs a smooth jazz alternative, something I thought I would gain by picking up an HD-enabled radio, in the form of a new car stereo. Turns out, there's only 94.7-2 "Wave classics" --- again, little dedicated to showcasing current smooth jazz content. (Hello Pandora!) Prediction: Without some very astute management decisions on the part of local broadcast stations, Pandora and iHeart radio will spell the death of local radio --- and local advertising dollars --- in much the same way the Internet is killing the local newspaper in spite of all their efforts to stay afloat online. Food for thought for management: Remaining relevant to your market does not mean trying to compete with sources you can't compete with, especially if that effort to "appeal" means watering down the format. Although I'm not as enthused about traditional jazz as I am about smooth jazz --- the latter of which I consider a pleasing hybrid between pop/jazz --- based on the suggestions here I am going to give 88.1 more of my listening time from here on out. read more

Im very upset that 94.7 The Wave has changed from smooth jazz to yet another R&B station.I listened faithfully since I was in my early 20's and now Im in my FABULOUS 40's and Im annoyed with the new format. I really am currently hating that stupid "Happy" song by Pharrell Williams.That song needs to stay in car commercials and in kids movies like its supposed to and NOT on regular radio where most of us can be annoyed by it. 94.7 is like the played out 'has been' now. If I wanted to listen to slow jams and R&B, I would obviously listen to The BEAT. This station was a minimum of a 5 star rating until it made the foolish decision to convert to R&B. I have officially deleted this garbage out of my radio selects. I think will have my CPA firm buy out a new radio programming station and make it into a smooth jazz station just because I am so put out by this change. I love the aura that 94.7 the WAVE/KTWV-FM has in the airwaves. Their DJs have angelic voices and are ever so pleasant. The music just makes me want to dance (twerk) in front of my kids for their joyment and mines of course. I sing along to the songs if I remember them from years ago. I've had 94.7 locked in on my radio for at least a decade. It's a good escape from the crap played on most "contemporary" stations and a nice breakaway when my go-to, KJLH, is playing something asinine. Elevator music kinda rocks sometimes... I learned a lot about smooth jazz listening to this station over the years, however lament in the fact that cool songs of my teen years are now "adult contemporary". But now they've switched to "smooth R&B". Umm... no. I love R&B, but I listened to The Wave for jazz/ac. Now given, they play some songs that KJLH has forgotten existed, but where am I supposed to get my Neil Diamond-Barry Manilow-Christopher Cross fixes? I absolutely love the Wave. This station is nice to listen to to unwind, relax, and just hang out. I stream online just to get that relaxing feeling. Sade, Dave Koz, Adele, Elton John, Maroon 5. It feels a lot like KOST did way back when. They even have some KOST DJs (Bryan, Mike, Brie). The main reason why it does not have 5 stars is because there should be more smooth jazz on the station.
