I frequent dive bars so the decor is upscale to me. Always an enjoyable place to go with one exception where the staff did zero about an removing a drunk/overserved patron. No hate, this is a college town and this did occur late on a weekend, but still very unsettling as this dude was semi-threatening to my group. ALL other experiences here have been great and will go back. The old bartender/manager was a really nice person (he manages another establishment now, I believe? Or used to?) Oh man, I had higher hopes for this place!! We came here for some drinks with friends and man as soon as I walked in I was wafted with cigarette smoke! Yuck!! We walked up to the bar to order some drinks and had to wait quite a while after we had decided since there was only 1 person working. Cool little spot to grab a beer or cocktail. But beware, if they're busy, they won't bother making anything that takes "time" (michelada, Bloody Mary, mojito) even though it's listed on the big black chalkboard. Bartenders are a little unpleasant and not too welcoming. The owner acts as the bar back and is a complete jerk. Not sure how he has stayed in business this long with that behavior. My guess is the staff are more liked than the owner. I'll go again, but won't expect much as far as good service goes. I work for a local bar and pride myself on my friendly customer service, even when we are busy and being pulled every which way. A good selection of local beers with a calmer and more relaxed atmosphere than most of the bars downtown that are overrun with undergrads. People were comfortable to relax, a breeze was flowing through the open doors and the bartender seemed to like his company. I think it's technically part of the North Village Art District. Bring your own food, there's BBQ, Korean and Mexican on the block so take your pick. They have plenty of taps and a book of cocktails. . Also, there are good specials so check their social media. I LOVED this place UNTIL tonight. I am a professor at the university so I thought of this place as a cool hang out spot for non-undergrads. I brought my cousin from out of town here and we were hanging out and drinking and everything was cool. Last call came and went, and we paid our tab and we were waiting for the last person to leave to make our way out when the so-called "owner" who did not want to give us his name (JAMES KANNE) approached us and was extremely rude to us. We were not loud, obnoxious, and even put out our hands to introduce ourselves as we kindly explained to him that we were paying our tab and finishing our drinks and were going to leave soon, when we were received very rudely, turned away and even rejected to have our hands shaken. Mr. Kanne thought, for some reason, it was ok to tell my cousin that he consciously would not shake her hand because it "was awkward for him" for whatever reason. It certainly wasn't because he was in a rush to close, because as the attached picture will show, he continued to party WELL BEYOND the closing time. And honestly, I've been to bars all over the US and most owners understand how to treat well-behaved, repeated, respectable, paying customers. This man does not care about customer appreciation, and unfortunately it has consequences for the very nice bartenders who served us, as they are the ones who give the amazing service but lose the customers in the long run because the owner is so rude. Too bad. This place has good potential but if I know that every dollar I spend is going towards the pockets of a complete jerk, I would much rather give my money to someone else. HORRIBLE SERVICE!!! In fact, we never even GOT service. We went in tonight because this bar seemed much less busy than most bars downtown; now I know why! My husband and I sat at THE BAR for 15 minutes with not so much as an acknowledgment from either of the two bartenders behind the bar! However; the one bartender, who looked like a stoned cast off of Shaggy from Scooby Doo, had plenty of time to chat up some chick, get her a drink, and DO TWO SHOTS WITH HER and one with the other bartender! It took us 20 minutes to find a damned parking spot to be treated like that?!?! Don't waste your time with this place! The owner (James Kanne) was extremely pretentious and treated me as if I was a disrespectful, unlawful, and an obnoxious drunken customer. This was very much disappointing to me because this was once my favorite go-to bar in Columbia. The bar tenders are wonderful, I do not hold this against them since they always served my drinks exactly how I wanted them. Bartenders there are not very nice. Drinks are good but pretty expensive (for como). Was there for a going away party with like 20 ppl so we brought in a lot of business. Then someone's mace went off in their purse accidentally. I literally have no idea if it was someone in our party or someone else? We all start coughing and everyone takes a breather outside. Bartender comes out and instead of asking what happened or if we are okay he starts yelling at the entire crowd. After that I left, I'm not sure about the rest of the party. I talked to 3 bartenders that night one had a man-bun and they were all hipster type and not friendly. Public house is a great place to get a few drinks. The place is small the staff is friendly . There has been a few live bands play from time to time but in my opinion this is what a bar is supposed to be like. Unfortunately possibly the worst experience I have ever had at a bar. The drinks were overpriced and the area was cramped. The staff was overly rude from the moment we walked in, but we didn't think much of it. My friends and I were respectfully keeping to ourselves by enjoying our drinks and watching a hockey game when one of the bartenders approached us. In the most disrespectful manner I have ever experienced, he accused us of "disrespectfully" sitting too far away from our table and impeding walkways. Despite his sorry accusation, it was clear that they did not want us to be there. This became apparent as he became furious when we asked for a further explanation. He accused us of not buying drinks as our drinks sat right in front of us. He quickly demanded that we leave. This was our first and last time at public house. Extremely disappointed in the service and hospitality. If you are looking for a nice relaxed place for a drink, I recommended somewhere such the roof that has a much better venue with the same price for drinks.
