Had really high hopes for this place after a long day on the road. The menu looked inventive and amazing. Things started out well, the BF had a tasty Manhattan and I had a mocktail that was subtle and delicious, and not overpriced as mocktails often are. But alas. The house salads that we ordered were overdressed in a vinaigrette so acidic we couldn't finish them. And there wasn't much to them. Other than greens and fried shallots and pickled red onions, there was a tiny dusting of some finely grated cheese. And who needs two kinds of onions and nothing else on the salad? Then we each had a bowl of the matzo ball soup, which was ridiculous. Three matzo balls sitting in a quarter-inch of broth that was so unbelievably salty that we couldn't eat that either. We ended up asking for hot water to dilute the broth to a level of saltiness that was edible. The chicken was okay and the matzo balls were okay. A little gummy. But the broth was just awful. It all made me wonder if the chef had lost their sense of taste due to Covid or something. Seriously. I've had that happen to me a couple of times and all I could taste was really basic stuff like sour and salt. And our waitress was totally uninterested in trying to make our experience better. She wasn't rude, she was just indifferent to the fact that we'd been served two courses that we absolutely couldn't eat. Didn't offer us anything to compensate or even express any sympathy about it. Last time that we were in Columbia, we were searching for a great restaurant that didn't necessarily just serve steak, Italian or some other ubiquitous idea for fine dining cuisine. We missed this place on the radar, and as we drove to find it, nearly missed it again because it wasn't well lit (the sign). A best kept secret perhaps. My husband ordered the pork and pork sausage conglomeration with roasted potatoes and red peppers, and he throughly enjoyed it. We shared the croquettes - they were perfect. I had the steak and potatoes - it was my favorite main dish on the table. My husband got the burger, it was also very good. My husband really wanted to come here for their impressive cocktail list, which included his favorite cocktail, Paper Plane. Drinks did not disappoint including their non-alcoholic selection - they had shrub & clubs. I was deciding between Cherry-Lime and Peach-Szechuan Pepper, and the waiter explained the Cherry-Lime was a bit sweeter so I opted for the latter - it was my perfect drink of slight peach flavor, and Szechuan pepper was more like a undertone flavor. I got the spicy pepper cilantro lime shrub for my second drink - very heavy on the vinegar. For starters we had milk & honey bread (bread warm and sooo pillowy, bone marrow butter was top tier), blistered shishito peppers (there were a couple of peppers where the salt wasn't equally dispersed so it was just a salt bomb with some bites, otherwise good), vegetable fritto misto (table's favorite - battered and fried veggies). I ordered the rainbow trout for the entree. Fish was really good, perfectly cooked, but the absolute star of the show was the red pepper purée it was served with. I've only done roasted red pepper purée as a pasta sauce but will def steal their idea and make it with fish at home. For dessert we ordered sticky toffee carrot cake - a mix of my husband's favorite dessert and it did not disappoint. Everyone loved the food, service was fast, cocktail list extensive. Easily the best dinner we had in Columbia. While the dining room can be a bit on the louder side, we found that it was not distracting. The room is very nice and bar area is beautiful. We noted a nice outdoor patio as well when entering. We had a reservation and were seated promptly and had a great server. We tried several appetizers, and all were good. Don't pass on the milk and honey bread, with a standout bone meal flavored butter. Another delicious app were the Gnudi, tender and nicely prepared. I had the Rainbow Trout as a main course, and it was delicious. Our server said it was locally caught, and I'll say perfectly cooked. The Waygu steak entrees were also great. We visited last weekend during Mezzo graduation weekend with a party of 5 for my step-son's graduation. My husband, me, my in-laws and my step-son were our party. Our table (reservation) was ready within 5 minutes although we showed up about 20 minutes early and we were quickly seated and greeted with water brought to the table. We chose a few drinks and appetizers for the table - the meatballs and pimento cheese. These came out fairly quickly but the pimento cheese only came with like 4 large crackers and were gone immediately with 5 people. We ordered more and it took about 25 minutes to get them (just minutes before our entrees came out). In the meantime, we ordered our entrees and before that - we mentioned we wanted the trout (one of the only non-red meat items on the menu aside from greasy shrimp and grits) and were told there were "only two left" and our server ran off to put them on hold then came back and said it was sold out. *More to come on this later. So my mother-in-law and I don't eat tons of red meat (she never eats it) and it was difficult to order here bc it's a meat/butcher-themed place. She ordered fried cheese as her entree from the appetizers which was good, but fried and heavy and I ordered shrimp and grits which was also very good, but heavy. The burger and meaty noodle dish my husband and stepson ordered they enjoyed. I also ordered an appetizer salad and it was light and great but not enough to serve as a meal. I have to say - they need to have a chicken or other non-red meat dish (aside from rabbit as not everyone is open to that option) on their menu and/or have more trout on hand for those who don't eat meats and exotic meat dishes that are heavy and coated in sauce and offer at least a few vegetarian entrees as the non-meat appetizers were mostly fried cheeses of some kind. Veggies are also good! We made due - but my mother-in-law and I weren't very happy. It's expensive and we didn't get what we wanted. Additionally, my step-son's girlfriend goes to Mizzou also and graduated and she and her family and some friends were there around the same time (maybe 10-20 mins difference) and they were told the exact same thing about the trout - "there were 2, let me go hold them, oh no - sold out". Seems fishy. Overall - the quality and food items were good - but there weren't enough crackers with the pimento and it took forever to get more plus cost $2 when it didn't come with enough anyway and we were not pleased with the lack of veggie or healthy/light options on the menu. I got the rabbit confit and it was really stand out and possibly one of my favorite entrees I've had in Columbia although it would have been nice to have a little more protein. The meat was about as tender as anything I've had and there was a fun mix of all very fresh flavors from the produce. I've also had the pork chop and shrimp and grits everything I get from here is always cooked very well, has great flavor, and is super fresh. Would highly recommend to anyone in Columbia - conveniently near downtown so if you're in town for a concert or game or something, it's not too far out of the way. We love that the menu always changes; we were excited to try everything. - Butcher board (4/5): Good variety, nice presentation. For the price, the serving size is a bit small but still very yummy. We came here for a nice dinner on a weekend getaway after a little basketball. 1. The ambiance is industrial but not too loud. 2. The bar is glorious and has a really nice selection of some harder to find, or elevated, bourbons and whiskeys. 3. The servers know about gluten and how to help me navigate without anxiety. We both ordered the wagyu; I ordered the wagyu strip steak on whipped mash potatoes and he ordered the 163 day aged Wagyu prime rib. We ordered the cheese board and the pimento cheese dip as well. The cheese selections were nice and unique - paired well with a marmalade and honey. The pimento cheese dip was delicious - pro tip: eat it with the crudite red peppers. My strip came out with fried onions on the top (on accident - gluten!) and she took it back and she immediately brought another without and indicated that another one was coming up so it was serendipitous to get one turned around quickly. The other person must have ordered theirs more well-done than I would have liked but the strip steak was delicious and there really is something different about wagyu beef that makes even a slightly more done steak still delicious and not off-putting. The cocktails were strong and expertly crafted. We did not wait long for our food at all and the cocktails came out quickly. The drinks are great. Several wks ago I had their 8 oz steak and I'm guessing it was over cooked as you could not chew it. My son had the pork shop and the hubs had the shrimp and grits. They both loved their meals. Last wk we stopped in - again the drinks were fantastic- my waiter recommended the lamb. Yet another disappointing dish very strong flavor but rubbery and no one volunteered to finish my entree. My son had the 8 oz steak which was excellent and melted in your mouth good. My husband and I went here for Valentine's Day. All the food was delicious. We had the sweet potato hummus, the peta was always warm and soft. The mocktails were made with excellence. The ambiance of this restaurant is really great. I went here on a date night around Christmas time and they had strung up lights all over the place among other decorations. The waiter was outstanding, checking in with us about the quality of drinks/food. The drinks were good but a bit pricey. The mule and sangria are both tasty. The food however was disappointing. I tried two of the burgers and they both were very overpriced below average burgers and the fries were slightly below average as well. There was no kids menu, but we were told they can get hot dogs and fries. The hot dog and fries were pretty disappointing for $10 a kid. This is not the best place for toddler options. Second time visiting but first time review. In town for the annual True - Fales Film festival, it was high on our list of spots to revist. Others simply stated it-probably the best restaurant in Columbia, MO. Great wait staff even on a crowded Saturday evening (reservations HIGHLY recommended). The meat curing room and the stylish bar give the place the look and feel of a dignified, yet accessible favorite spot. Now, let's get to the serious part - the menu; Unique without being pretentious, there are many interesting items (e.g. The Duck; the Winter Gyro Fattoush and the Shrimp & Grits) and great variations on staples (the small green mixed salad and the Mac & Cheese are 2 great examples of something typical, but done atypically! I am sucker for great Pimento Cheese spread and Barred Owl takes it to another level for sure. The Benne Buttermilk crackers are plentiful to spoon the orange goodness across and topped with a pickled pepper. My only regret is the ample portion would not have disappointed me if it were larger, but probably best that it isn't! As mentioned the Duck Galantine Tartine, listed as a small plate, was an absolute sensation if you care at all about duck. If you're unsure, ask your server for a full description, it will get your mouth watering. Served as a layered of moussed and thinly sliced meat on top of a large piece of grilled sourdough oh my goodness this was such a treat. Others in our party found the Winter Gyro Fattoush both plentiful (it really is a full meal) sporting an abundance of gyro meat, pita and a delightful suite of greens. The Shrimp & Grits and the Mussels and Frites were also superb. I should also mention that the diverse drink menu features a number of interesting named options and the prices of the cocktails are actually quite reasonable compared to other cities and restaurants. We will definitely make a 3rd trip to the Barred Owl on our next trip in for the T/F Festival. read more

So we finally tried this restaurant, it was under-whelming. My steak was yummy (although for $48 it would be nice to have a vegetable or little salad actually come with it). My husband ordered the lamb, which was so small and sitting on top of a tiny pile pureed beets. That's it, he ended up adding a soup for some food. My daughter's mushroom ragu pasta was... tasteless. It looked delicious, but barely had any flavor! The restaurant is also so loud we were all yelling at each other. So, I think I know why everyone loves it so much. We don't drink anymore. But if you come in, have a couple whiskeys or whatever (the bar was stocked and lively), have some charcuterie and warm olives and stuff, then you don't really notice your entire by the time you eat it, either the small size or possible tastelessness (except the steak which was fine). We had a really nice brunch here yesterday. I invited Amanda H. who lives in Columbia to join our group since we were all visiting for the weekend. She had been here for happy hour but never brunch, so we were all newbies to the experience. Our server Emma was awesome and patient with our big indecisive bunch. Our friends ordered various brunch cocktails and cold brew coffee, Eric R. got tea, and I stuck with water. Carlie M. ordered monkey bread for the table, which came out hot and gooey and sweet. It was divine! I ordered the home fry poutine for my meal, which included potatoes, pickled jalapeno, wagyu pastrami, cheese, sunny side up eggs, and caramelized onion gravy topped with my favorite, green onions. It was as good as it sounded, kind of a cross between poutine and corned beef hash but with different ingredients. Eric R. ordered the shrimp and grits and got a biscuit on the side with blueberry jelly. Everyone was happy with their food. Let me start by saying the service here was the BEST we've experienced in CoMo. Our waitress Allison was fabulous. Our glasses were never empty and dinner every need was met. The small plates and appetizers were delicious, the beer bread worth the trip. Unfortunately, the fried meatloaf was raw inside and completely inedible, but Allison to the rescue! She had it removed from bill. The rabbit, pasta with mushrooms was earthy and filling and the boys seemed to enjoy their OMT sandwiches, but neither finished their portion.
