This is in regards to the roseville location specifically. I have recently moved to the area from another city, and myself and my fiance have come in and looked around in the store about a total of three or four times. As others have previously mentioned, this store has a lotta cool junk in it. That being said, you can get most, if not all, of this stuff online or in other stores for a much lower price, and you won't have to deal with the incompetent team of idiots who are tasked with running the place. The shop's true downfall is not in its content or wares, but in its poor customer service, and general attitude of the staff. Firstly, none of the staff seem to be paying attention or giving much thought to the average customer. Furthermore, on each separate visit, I was in one way or another quite displeased by the service. For example, the girl with dark hair and black rimmed glasses "working" the front register area, initially gave me absolutely no acknowledgment the entire time I was in the store or wished to ask a question. This individual spent the majority of the time I was in the store, either playing with her hair, texting on her cell phone, or playing on the internet. I find that totally unprofessional and unacceptable. What's worse is the lower-middle management running the place. The "gentleman" in his forties with the greasy black hair and dago mustache, who identified himself as the assistant manager was in fact the most startling of the staff members. Literally each time I came into the store, this man was either angrily (and loudly) complaining or spouting off about something that wasn't the way he wanted it. Furthermore, his customer service skills really only seem to be any good when he's helping a pretty young female customer. Basically, if you want his help with something, you either need to be annoyingly persistent in asking for it, or you need to bring in a hot babe for him to even notice you. On top of that, I was personally ignored by this man for a number of minutes while he finished up his heated discussion about World of Warcraft (surprise surprise).The general attitude and demeanor of this man, is far from indicative of a professional retail worker, let alone an assistant manager. The man has no business managing others based on my observations. While I realize this is in fact a comic book store, and I should be prepared to deal with lazy, ineffectual, condescending social pariahs, A-1 comics does not have enough positive attributes to outweigh it's serious and critical flaws. My final assessment of this establishment, is simply one of disappointment. My best advice for any potential consumers, is to just go online for such specialty items, or shop around for a better store run by actual professionals. Unless of course you're like one of the many obnoxious card players running rampant in the store, then you'll fit right into this place. read more

Took my comic book collection in to sell. This is a mint collection that I have had since I was 6-7 years old. The man in charge of appraising and buying vintage comics must buy a lot of stolen comics or deal with drug addicts a lot. He took my "web of spiderman", issues 1-27; "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1", a variety of mint Walt Disney comics", and multiple other Marvel super hero books, and offered me $200.00 for the whole stack. I was trying to get money to put into my harley, not buy a crack rock to smoke with some hooker. I felt very disrespected, seeing as he had an issue of "web of spiderman" in glass, and selling for 200+. His copy was not near as nice as mine, which was identical (as far as the issue). When I then inquired about having certain books graded, he said he needed to charge $50.00 per hour. I said that was fine, and inquired as to how many comics he thought he could grade in an hour and he snickered at me and said he likes to REALLY take his time; like he was pissed that I was not going to allow him to have a few thousand dollars in books at his regular stolan comics price. Screw this place. I have since placed several books from my collection on ebay and made $1,200 dollars (off of 3 books), as opposed to the 200 he offered for nearly 30 comics. If this asshole is not the owner of the store, the owner should evaluate his employee better. The police should investigate this store for the purchase of stolen comics as well. I would recommend ebay or other online resources for folks looking to sell off portions of their personal collections. Unless you need some rock cocaine or heroin desperately, this place is a joke. I really like this store and it bums me out that I have to stop going there. My husband just had the most noxious experience with an employee who decided to verbally abuse him out of looking at a particular pile of comics that he insisted didn't have price tags on them, in spite of the fact that many of them did. Had this employee been polite and assisted my husband, instead of IMMEDIATELY becoming aggressively hostile and angry, as if my husband had wronged him in some way, then we would continue to spend hundreds of our disposable income dollars there per month. There is no way in hell he deserved to be treated this way. We take absolute pride in being kind and understanding to those working with the public and understand that sometimes, those in retail have rough days here and there, but this was blatant, power-trippy, nasty, NASTY behavior. This place is a great place to find geeky stuff but ever since one of the more knowledgeable guys have been fired it's terrible customer service has become more noticeable. I use to take my 8 year old son here for all his comic book stuff and there was this guy who could chat away with my son for ages about comics and this was very good since I'm not too much of a comic book guy myself. Now when we go no one even speaks to us and if you ever try to buy anything the girl at the register just takes your money and whisk you out. Now I'm not one for seeing korean prostitutes but I bet you get a korean prostitute will treat you better after taking your money like this girl at the register. My experiences at this store as of late have been so terrible that I will never venture in this place ever again nor will I let my son go here. If you want comics go somewhere else! read more

I went into A-1 to look for a birthday gift for a friend's child. I have no clue about comics, collector cards, Magic or whatever... The girl that helped me was very nice. All I had was a name of the trading card and she immediately took me over, explained the different types of cards, the tins, etc. She helped me pick out which cards would be best given my limited knowledge. The prices were very reasonable, as I figured a specialty shop would be outrageous, it was nice to know I was wrong. My friend's son loved the cards and I was very happy to have the help. read more

Great selection of anything comic related. But there is only one good employee in this store. The female manager. She's great. All the others that work there are self righteous and rude. Especially this nerd dude who got on the steroids. He thinks his shit doesn't stink. Wish I knew his name. Can't miss him though. I've known Brian Peets (the owner) for almost 30 years now and over the years, he has become one of the most respected comic dealers in the country. If you are a Gold, Silver or Bronze-age collector, A1 comics is the penultimate store in Northern California. I have been a professional comics grader for years and I trust Brian and his staff as much as I trust myself. Get thee to A1 comics. read more
