One employee was helping/negotiating two customers while the other was just sitting on the computer. After sometime we just left. Remember guys Pokémon is just a kids game. Review for single cards The pro: This is probably the most organized spot in the city. They have their database of exactly what the have in exactly what condition and you can use it to get a list together of what you want. Then they go grab the cards for you. Very simple. The con: Prices are a little wonky. The cheap cards that would be 50 cents at most places in their big box of random cards can be as low as 10 cents here. The good cards however are very inflated in cost. Some things here are 3-4x what they are online (shipping included). Essentially this is one of the premier spots to go for getting your deck built out with basic cards. I would not shop here for your premium cards though. read more

Will no longer be shopping or pre-ordering here for Magic the Gathering. Just wasted a half hour of gas/drive time to pick up two preordered collector booster boxes only to be told that they "oversold" and did a "first come first serve" sale of the boxes. As an apology when they get more they will be giving $20 store credit, but are still doing a first come first serve...ya no thank you, terrible way to retain a customer. Definitely on the pricy side. I shop here for Yugioh and Digimon so far, and man those booster boxes are expensive. Booster packs were about 5 bucks each. Its sucks because all the other card shop around this one is priced the same where as the best card shops for pricing is a drive for some. Best pricing for cards definitely is All Thing Anime and Competitive Card Shack in Sacramento. I like the staff, thought. They were all good and informative. Place is a nice small store. read more

It pains me to write this. I have been a customer here and have had a comic book saver pull list here for 10 plus years. I can't tell you how much money I spend there every week but I collected easily over 20 titles. The last few months have been terrible! My comics that I were collecting were not getting pulled into my saver and I had to either buy elsewhere or EBay for the missed titles. I understand that things like that happen however customer service is what I value the most. On at least 5 separate occasions in the last two months I showed up to pick up my saver and stood at the counter for 20 minutes before I was even acknowledged! I spend a lot of money in that shop and to be ignored is unacceptable ! Today I called to cancel my saver and the person I spoke to who is in charge of comic book savers didn't even care that a customer of over 10 years was taking business elsewhere! If you are a comic book collector and have a saver....don't give this place your business. read more

I've been coming to this shop off and on since the 90's. They've really turned this store around in the past 5 months. Remodeled, reorganized and restocked back issues. It looks great! There's a new-ish guy (I think?) working here now that has been really helpful on multiple occasions recommending books and helping me find back issues. He's super friendly and chill and I appreciate that. I'm primarily a comic guy so I can't speak to the TCG, CCG side, but it seems like they're on top of that based on conversations I've heard between employees and other customers. Called two hours ahead to insure they were putting on the scheduled Standard MTG tournament, they confirmed and said yes. I drove 45 minutes and showed up on hour ahead of time and said I was there for the Standard tournament. When it reached the time to start a few people came in saying "we are here for draft" the staff the proceeded to call out "who is here for draft?" And starting taking down names. They never even mentioned Standard and I walked out. I don't need more cards, I've spent money on cards to build decks and play Standard. If your Standard tournaments don't draw players please don't have them listed on Wizards tournament schedule, and definitely dont tell me when I call that you have a Standard tournament happening. read more

Too many times I have been disappointed by this establishment. Will never shop here again and will definitely not recommend to anyone else. The staff seemed poorly trained and misinformed about their products. Even worse, I have encountered tampered product. Went to my first ever MTG event here and the atmosphere was very friendly. Staff was great and I had a fun time all afternoon for only $25. The only "downside" I could see is not as big of a comic book selection on display as the store I used to go to, but still had quite a bit. Staff was great, polite and patient, really appreciated the guys taking the time to talk to me and go above and beyond to help me get the answer I was looking for. These guys know what they're talking about and are really fair as well. I have been to a few other shops in the area and none compare to these guys if I could give them 10 stars I would. Amazing customer service and great vibes all around. Must check them out if you're local or just passing by they have a great selection of comics and TCG's. Also their organization is just golden, don't come across a lot of places that have their inventory to the things on the floor organizing the way things were. This place is a gem! I love bringing my kids here with their allowance to buy Pokémon cards! The staff is super friendly and helpful, and everyone is super nice. My daughter wanted to buy a pink card binder they sell, but it was more expensive than she could afford. One of the regulars who was waiting for his card tournament to start heard her talking, and he bought a new binder for himself just so he could give my daughter the pink one he had. Came in today and did a massive trade-in. The employees were very patient, friendly, and kind. I was there quite a while, but I brought in tons of cards - they were also juggling a tournament and other customers. They spent a considerable amount of time going through my stuff, and gave me very reasonable prices on modern Pokemon Cards for trade-up credit and I left quite happy with some new MTG cards. Pay no mind to the relatively small (and clean!) storefront, they have quite a large selection to go through on their computers if what you want isnt in their cases. I wanted to get some comics and they had the comics I wanted. They also had amazing customer service and everything was easy to find.

I have gone to this shop on a few occasions and it was my main shop when I got back into collecting last year. Since the Pokemon card boom this shop has had INSANE mark ups. One time I went in and found an First Partner pack (normally 10 bucks) priced at 40 bucks. I kinda shrugged it off but have noticed over time that more and more of their pokemon items have been disgustingly overpriced. Today was the final straw I went in to see if they happened to have any Celebrations items expecting it to be marked up but when I saw a $20 Celebrations box marked up to $100 dollars I looked at my son and said we had to leave. An employee came running out after me to let me know those items were mispriced. (I agreed with him on that) He let me know those boxes are actually $30 a piece someone just forgot to fix the stickers. Given everything I have seen I have ZERO faith that if I walked back in tomorrow the price tags would read anything other that $99.99. Just avoid this place its really sad they are resorting to scalper prices when they have a direct distribution relationship with pokemon. I will say this the people working in the shop are very nice and not mean about it in any way, its just a shame to see a place with great service held back like this. read more

My go to game store in the greater Sacramento area. Mtg FNM draft is always a great experience and they have good prize support to boot. There is always a decent turnout for events, and the people that do play here are good people. I personally met some of my best friends hanging out playing games together in the game room. This review is more or less aimed at my experiences playing Magic: The Gathering at this store. After moving to Sacramento, I started to look for a store to play Friday Night Magic tournaments at. Most Magic players typically have a "home store" where they go for most of their tournaments and other events, and I decided to give Adventures in Comics and Games a try. Unfortunately, I found the other players at Adventures to be rather pretentious, and extremely unfriendly to a (more or less) casual Magic player like myself. Folks at this store are hellbent (heh heh, Magic pun!) on being the "best players possible" and are the type of Magic player that goes to PTQ's, Pro Tours, and other big tournaments with one goal only: to win. A lot of the players at this store seem to forget that (gasp) Magic can be fun too! So, enough about the playing climate, what about the store? Yes, the employees are knowledgeable. Yes, they have a huge assortment of singles to choose from. However, their singles are usually priced at or well above what they are actually worth- you won't find many deals. Also, **they charge for Friday Night Magic tournaments!!!** This is huge, as FNM's are supposed to be free. You get the feeling that the owners of this store are trying to milk as much money out of their customers as possible. I understand that they are a business and need to make money, but FNM's should be free, just like they are everywhere else. All in all, if you're a super-serious I-Just-Want-to-Win Magic player, you might like this store. But if you want to have a little fun, try elsewhere. read more

A solid games & comics shop. They clearly are aiming at the serious role-player because the front third of the shop is simply large tables for gaming. (They apparently host mini-tournaments.) A small corner in the front provides limited offerings in miniatures and action figures, but the real action is further back. As with most shops, the glass counters house a wide array of Magic and other CCG cards. I must say, though, that I was disappointed with the limited selection of dice; given how important a strong dice collection is to most gamers, you'd think that they'd be happy to sell plenty of new ones to the guys at the gaming tables. There's nothing worse than facing an attack roll on a dragon or a Bluff check with an angry monarch and having your dice be on a cold streak; sometimes you're better off buying a whole new collection of the fanciest dice in the store. The back half of the shop is devoted to comic books and gaming manuals from a wide array of game systems (D&D, GURPS, World of Darkness, etc.) including some lesser-known options. (I hadn't seen a Rolemaster book in ages.) -1 star for having a big pile of shipping boxes blocking of an entire section of gaming manuals. Comics are all plastic-bagged and "displayed" in the standard format of being filed in cardboard boxes. Depth of selection was a bit sporadic, but I appreciated the discount rack in the back. Up to 80% off! The staff seemed friendly and highly knowledgeable. (One claimed to be a cribbage master also and was happy to accept my buddy's challenge. Have cribbage board, will travel.) I noted with appreciation that they monitored the number of people in the shop and adjusted the thermostat to maintain a comfortable temperature. They even made a few comments indicating an ethic of creating a safe space for geeks and nerds to hang out where they could still develop some beginning social skills and responsibility. Place sucks for Magic, they let people do whatever, no rules. I like comics but this place don't, they order like 2 of each comic and their back issues are so thrashed. The workers know a lot about card games but no knowledge on comics. Not to mention they charge FNM. Lame Oh don't bring your girlfriend in there, these guys freak out and stare hardcore. Walked in and was hit with a wall of BO. The air was thick in this store, which was crowded due to some tournaments that were going on at the time of my visit. Despite the "fragrant" nature of the air (and being stared at by fellow customers due to my femaleness....sigh) my husband and I had a highly positive experience at Adventures in Comics & Games. The guy who helped us, Connor, was awesome. He engaged my husband and I by asking us open-ended questions about our gaming interests. Once he heard this was our first visit he walked us through the store's different features, such as their rewards program and their online card inventory for ordering (in our case) single Magic: the Gathering cards. Connor also walked us through the ordering process. During all of this he was friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable. Superb customer service. Thanks, Connor! You deserve a raise. Best place in Sacramento to buy Magic the Gathering cards. Prices are competitive with online prices. The cards selection is big. They have a computer system in the store that you look up stock and "order" cards you want, then print your list and the staff pulls the cards for you. This allows you to browse through their entire selection, see prices and availability before you have the staff search out a card and pull it. You can tinker as you find out prices and available selection. Every store (not just card stores) should have a system like this. The staff have always been nice and helpful. In fact, even customers like to help answer questions for me. I haven't played cards at any of their tournaments so I have input on that. So why not 5 stars? Limited selection in other games and comics, more space is needed in the store, the store needs a face lift, but mostly someone just needs to clean the place.
