The main problem with A1 storage is that they WILL jack up your rate 6 months after you move in, believing that you're too lazy to move your stuff to a better storage facility. This is the third A1 storage place I've been to and the third time they've jacked up my rate after exactly 6 months. I really have to find a better place. So just understand that the rate you pay for the first 6 months will increase by about 10% after 6 months and will very likely increase every 6 months. read more

BUYER BEWARE! After my son's Father passed away suddenly last year, we were forced to put valuable items into a storage unit. We thought this one was great because it looked clean and organized, until after approximately 6 months they raised the price from $156 to $172 then after 1 year & a few months they raised the price to $200 now!! They claim it's the cost of living....NO, IT'S GREED! This place is a scam! Raising the prices this quickly and so often for such a small storage space is a total RIP OFF. I DO NOT RECOMMEND STORING YOUR ITEMS AT THIS PLACE!! There are multiple less expensive places but now the hassle to move everything is a major issue......Do your homework and ask about price increases!! The facility is clean, safe, reasonably priced (despite rent increases), well-lit, and a good place to store household goods between moves. Five stars for that. I rented a storage unit here for a little over a year. Within three months of leasing the unit, our rates increased. I wrote a yelp review to express some serious middle class outrage, which resulted in some soft cyberbullying by their "business manager," who gave out details about my account right here on yelp. I deleted my review when she blocked me for asking her to remove account details. I have since moved cross-country (and taken all my crap with me), but I feel compelled to let you know that their corporate social media manager is an absolute tyrant who gets her jollies by making customers feel unsafe. Aside from the ridiculous rent increases after only the first few months, the staff, specifically Kathleen, was very rude. We returned to the unit using the entrance code the facility gave us upon renting. After entering the code, Kathleen came to the door claiming the access code used was for auctioneers only and we weren't supposed to have it. Apparently her previous associate was fired for giving out the auctioneers code and there was a personalized code we were supposed to be using. When we came to the front desk possibly for assistance since we didn't know what to do, she was just highly unhelpful. All she did was blurt at us if we tried to use the auctioneers code again the alarm would sound and the police would be called. Ultimately it was the facility's mistake, however, instead of kindly fixing the issue Kathleen was needlessly impolite about the entire situation. For a moment we were afraid they wouldn't let us have access to our belongings. The facility is clean however they're clearly unorganized and have poor customer service. Best storage facility and staff in the area. I've actually had storage units at 3 neighboring facilities off and on over the past 10 years. Finally A1 storage came along. Clean, fresh and modern. I'm not sure what I'm more impressed with the facility or the staff. Billy and Kathleen are really terrific! Great to talk to and made my move in very smooth. I was able to use their FREE moving truck to vacate my previous storage facility... Public Storage. They were indifferent and flat out rude on a regular basis. It made me very happy to pull up to the Public Storage in the A1 Storage Truck and tell them I was leaving. The look on the managers face was priceless. When I told her that I might move because they had poor customer service. She laughed smugly and said "you'll never leave us". What was I to expect. . After all is just a storage facility. After meeting Kathleen and a Billy..it was a night & day difference! I moved in the next day. Note. . Upon my first trip unloading the truck. We were greeted by Billy holding 2 very much appreciated ice cold bottles of water. I really knew then that I had made the right choice. read more

Very annoyed with A1 Storage! I have been with them for about 10 months now and rent has increased 2 times already. The first increase was only $10 so I wasn't that upset about it but the second increase is $40 and that is just ridiculous! You would think they would want to keep their customers but clearly they are banking on people not wanting to bother with moving their things out and just paying whatever they're told. I moved out immediately! The storage facility itself is very nice, well lit, and clean. But if rent increases are going to happen 3 times a year, no thank you! The staff, Kathleen and Alisa, were great and very helpful in reserving and finally renting two large storage units. The facility is clean, cool and easy to load or unload, even if you need the freight elevator. I did discuss rent increases but it appears that A-1 is now over that milestone but, as with any monthly service, buyer beware. I would highly recommend this facility and staff to all. read more

Be aware that when you rent a space the company will increase your rent on a regular basis. Our unit was rented to us in 2016 for $190, we just emptied it and we were paying $350. We understand inflation but this was ridiculous. And... when we emptied our unit earlier this month, there were 4 matching dining chairs missing, among other items. These items were stored right near the space opening. We had not been in our unit for over a year and had no idea someone was able to access our A-1 mandatory locking system and steal property. We believe there must be a master key that enables management to empty spaces that have been abandoned or when the space bill is not being paid. Neither was the case with us. We noticed, too late, that there is another hole, besides the A-1 mandatory lock, to put your own lock, we highly suggest that you do so if renting space from this company. Had we done this we most likely would not have been robbed. Also, check on your stuff more often than we did, that's our fault. Someone is enjoying our furniture but it's not us! read more

RENTERS BEWARE: We were the original renters of Unit #3 at this facility when it opened in 2015. We just moved our stuff out this past weekend and our movers discovered leaves and water in our unit! The water appears to have been slowly dripping for quite some time and it leaked on our stuff and seeped into a brand new King mattress that was in a plastic cover (note the mattress cover was purchased directly by A-1 Self Storage). Needless to say the mattress was moldy and we have been picking leaves out of boxes, etc. We just spent $1500 on a new mattress and A-1 Self Storage could care less. We also found condensation on mirrors and other furniture so clearly water was somehow getting in the unit. The so-called "manager" Kathleen Alameda asked us to wait four days while they looked into the situation. We provided them pics of the damaged mattress, pictures of the debris on the ground, feedback from our movers, etc. After four days I never heard from Kathleen and when I called her she said they are still investigating it and she can't give us a time frame on when this will be addressed. We would advise anyone considering this facility to look somewhere else. I don't fault Kathleen and the employees for the leak but I do hold them responsible for the slow and and non-responsive way they have handled the situation. As others have noted, Kathleen is very rude, ineffective and has terrible customer service skills. Clearly by the reviews I am not the only person who has had this experience with her. It was also super shady that they locked us out of the unit before we had signed our papers to vacate once they knew about the leak. We showed up to take additional pictures and for someone else to inspect it for us and they had blocked our code. read more

Can I give zero stars? I rented this unit for my 88 y/o mother so she could dispose of her lifetime items when she moved into care housing. The company slapped a $10 Month "insurance" charge onto her account without notifying her. That is a whopping $120 a year involuntary insurance charge for old furniture and mementos!!!! All for junk that fits in a tiny 5x8 unit. Rates are raised about every six months...I'm reviewing all records now and anticipate taking them to court for fraud-find some place else more reputable read more

I am very disappointed with A-1. I have only been a customer of theirs for about 6 months and since starting they have had rent increases twice. The price increments have been substantial each time; I am now paying nearly double as to what I started with. The facilities are very secure, clean, and the staff very helpful, but be prepared if you are going to store your things here because most likely your bill will be unfortunately increased as well. After having a XLarge Drive-up Unit Price Self Storage Since 2102 next door to A-1 Self Storage and having Price Self Storage Gardners Blow Outside Greasy Black Dirt blown into our Drive-Up Unit we were very disappointed to say the least... Price Self Storage wouldn't even assume responsibility to clean what they had gotten filthy... It was awful and on everything! On ALL the Boxes, and our Clear Shrink Wrapped Custom Furniture was now covered in a dark greyish brown yuk! The Manager at Price Self Storage stated, "He had been replacing rubber strips at the bottom of the roll-up doors because the complex was 12 years old"... That statement gave us little comfort! And, he wasn't willing to anything about it... I ended attempting to try clean everything before we brought it into our nice and clean unit at A-1 Storage that we love. WE ARE VERY HAPPY WITH A-1 SELF STORAGE'S SERVICE,THE CONSTANT SPARKLING SMILES FROM THE TWO (2) LOVELY LADIES THAT WORK & MANAGE AT THIS FACILITY IN THE OFFICE... RENTERS BEWARE!!! We were original renters in unit #3(basement) 2 1/2 years ago after the facility first opened. Moved our items in and never touched them. When we moved out 9-8-17, we realized that our mattress had been destroyed by mold. When we contacted Kathleen to let her know, she cancelled our access code although we had one more day per our contract. We never signed the "vacated unit" form, walked the unit with Kathleen for cleanliness, or verbally told anyone we would no longer be in the unit. Kathleen told us to wait till 9-12-17 for a resolution on the mattress. With nowhere to sleep, we had to purchase a new mattress for $1500. Tuesday comes and nothing from A-1 Self Storage or Kathleen. So my wife posts on YELP. The phone starts ringing. Scott who is an area manager calls me. The first thing he says, " I don't know what you expect us to do about this." I'm not joking. After many minutes of back and forth where Scott called me a "plumbing expert", "9 out of 10 people move in damaged goods and try to pin it on A-1 Storage", " we have so many facilities and units to manage, can you imagine if we gave money to everyone who has damage, we would be out of business." He also raised his voice 3 different times to the point of yelling at me. Well here we are 1 week later. Scott called and left a message,"I would advise you to file a claim with your insurance. We found no evidence of negligence on our part." Funny thing is I have pictures of the walls with water stains, floor with water stains, debris in unit, pipe going from our unit to upstairs access hallway that has light coming thru. We also wrapped our mattress in bags and duct taped it tight. Thanks for nothing A-1 Self Storage (San Juan Capistrano), Kathleen, and Scott. A-1 is THE BEST!!! I have had several storage units at different facilities all around the area. No place has come near to the quality of service and convenience of access of A-1! I have rented two different units from them and both times I was shocked to find out how little I was paying for the first month. I have used their moving truck several times (at no cost). Kathleen and Billy truly make the experience enjoyable and convenient! I don't offer recommendations easily, especially for standard services that you can get everywhere fairly comparably, but I do recommend A-1 self storage enthusiastically! I cannot say enough about the positive experience I have had at a1 self storage SJC. It is one exit from my home, therefore very convenient. However, there are several competitors slightly closer, but I initially chose this location because I was very dissatisfied with the storage I was renting from for over a year. We moved into a1 opening day June 2014. We had to wait and push back move in several times due to delays with Fire Marshall, therefore I was unable to be here for the move in due to a prearranged trip. I initially was not granted a discount which I thought should have been offered due to the delays. I decided to just go with it, and I am so glad that I trusted the process. Kathleen has been absolutely AMAZING! We moved out of town for two years and it's challenging having your belongings thousands of miles away. Never lost a night of sleep! Kathleen is warm, understanding, and a customer service super star! I was a customer service trainer for many years for some major companies and I know a STAR when I meet one. She and her team have been nothing but kind and considerate and made me feel that my belongings were secure and in good hands. We had two storage spaces and we have moved back to the area and are now emptying our units this week. Without me even asking, for the small hassle I had with move in date, Kathleen has made up for in my moving out. She and Corey are both just excellent people. I have not encountered any other staff, but I am sure with Kathleen leading the team, I am confident that everyone would follow suit. They have gone above and beyond what I expected. I do not want to bash any other business and of course they can have new management at this time, but I was in a storage very close to a1 and very miserable. The storage units are clean, well lit and were nice and cool when we were in there in April-May. The staff is very nice, friendly and helpful. We had a little miscommunication problem about prorating the last months rent to the days we were there. I thought they said they would but in looking at the contract, they do not. It was unfortunate for us as we moved out a few days after we paid the rent for the entire month. Ive used A-1 and Public and I would say both were good, but A-1 better. read more

I went to this location to get a storage unit. I called before I got there and Kathleen was a joy to speak to. She answered all my questions over the phone and told me the specials. It was supposed to be 25% off the first months rent. So I made a reservation. When I got there Kathleen and Kelvin were ao helpful she said I qualified for a free month. I was shocked tbat I agreed to pay around $170 & then when she pulled up the space I requested it didn't cost me anything for my first month. If u need a storage unit go see them, they are honest and any business that saves you more money that u agreed on is great. I'll tell everyone I know about the guys and gals at A-1 Self Storage.
