And the 'New Guy' big guy with a red beard manning the register was training and enthusiastic. He seemed to do his job efficiently. The food?...the burger was a pretty good sized burger with lots of fresh toppings. I had the Papa Burger (double burger). Fries were warm and slightly crispy. Counter is currently closed due to short on staff, which to me is fine since I love a drive-thru, the guys at the window were funny and had our order in no time. The root beer float is a classic and when I see a A&W open I always stop to grab one. My float tasted great, the cheese curds were good and the onion rings were very crispy. Beyond belief. SLOWEST service ever. You'd think with the day-to-day grind the staff would learn how to work more efficiently. But nope, not here. With two people in line (me being the 2nd), it took 20 minutes to even get to the counter and another 10 minutes for the guy come back to take my order after pacing back and forth filling sodas that another employee was already filling. I ordered a small box of fried cheese curds. How long did it take to get that small box? Another 30 minutes. When I finally got my cheese curds, the counter guy asked if I wanted a bag. I said yes. He immediately goes to take the next dude's order. Um. Was I gonna wait another 20 minutes to get a measly bag? Heck no. I peaced out after that. If you want "speedy" service, or as speedy as this restaurant can get, go through the drive-thru. Otherwise, be prepared to wait, and wait, and wait some more. I have no idea why, but every single A&W I've ever been to moves at the speed of a turtle. They are all slow, and this one is no exception. It always takes a solid 5-15 minutes to get my food. Employees are friendly, just slow. But they do always make my order correctly. I typically get the papa burger, without tomatoes and extra pickles, and cheese curds, and a soda without ice. Not rocket science, but they are more efficient than McDonalds in getting my order correct. The restaurant is tiny, being inside a gas station. Sometimes it's clean, sometimes it's dirty. It seems like they get a little overwhelmed if there is a rush, so there are times I find dirty tables with leftover wrappers and trays. Some customers are just lazy and don't clean up after themselves. I love that you can get root beer and floats in the frosted glass. It makes it that much better, especially root beer floats. It's a fast food restaurant I crave periodically, especially the cheese curds. So I'll stop in when I want something different or a root beer float. read more

We come here as it is inbetween our final destination and it is right off the freeway on to our next road. For whatever reason this place does not feel like a fast food joint of today. Have to say that because I don't eat fast food but I do stop here and have a fish sandwich and fries OR onion rings depending on my mood.. also a vanilla shake depending on my mood. The fries are crisp, hot and not greasy, same goes with the sandwich. The shake is creamy and frosty. The folks that take your order are wonderful.. I believe they have been doing this for some time. You almost feel like maybe they own the place and they make you feel like you are a guest when you step up there and give them your order. She always warns us that the fish sandwich will take an extra 5 minutes.. no surliness, no lackadaisical attitude.. just a nice greeting, good customer service. It is inside of a gas station store and the folks at the pump as well as the store where you can get all kinds of goodies and drinks for your road trip seem to have that same sort of nice to see you attitude like in the old days when customer service was a part of business.. it still is here. read more

Filthy! The entire place is filthy. It is obvious that they do the absolute minimum amount of cleaning and it's not just kinda messy. Every surface, the walls the outside of the trash cans, the corners on the floor are all grimy. I can't even imagine what it must be like in the back. My hamburger was so cold that the bun was cold to the touch and the cheese never melted. The root beer freez and the cheese curds are always good. But the restaurant is nasty. We drove off and realized we were price bamboozled. We ordered 1 onion ring, 2 combos. I wanted to substitute my drink for a root beer float. They charge me full price for the root beer float and for the soda which I thought there should be a extra charge for the float & that the other drink came with the combo. I waited 30 minutes in the drive thru before I could even order, and then after I ordered I came up to the window to see several of the staff standing around talking and laughing for a good 15 minutes before they even bothered to take my card. It was 6:37, so I doubt they were all simultaneously on break. I got a cookie dough blizzard-thing, and the cookie dough was stale and freezer burnt. Thanks for reminding me why I haven't eaten here in almost a decade, lucky my partner likes your cheese curds or you'd not have had our business today either. I've never gotten a hamburger in my life from a place that didn't have ketchup on it. Today I asked for no mayo. And maybe a&w doesn't normally put anything but mayo on their burger but I guess I'd hoped they would mention it would be a dry patty with nothing to dampen the bun but the dehydrated tomatoes and ask if I needed something else. The "gentleman" at the window seemed very inconvenienced by the request to fill our wide mouth water bottle but did so. Lastly, we looked in our bag of two sandwiches (burger and club) and large cheese curbs to find no napkins, glad we looked. Cheese curds are the only good thing about this visit. I'd love to see them use regular lettuce and no shreds bc none of it stayed on my burger. The pickles were all so small they looked like the last cut on the end and seemed to be sad and wilted. This is yet another restaurant I should have reviewed long ago. Not only do I have a serious weakness for A&W root beer, fries, and cheese curds (the latter is a fairly recent development), but this location is an easy on/off from I-5 AND it's conveniently about halfway between Eugene and Portland. That makes is a perfect pitstop going to and from school. It's pretty standard, offering the menu you expect at prices you expect, though they often have some good national specials. (Currently, 4 combos for $4 each, and half-price sides from 2-5pm daily!) It's attached to a good mini-mart and large gas station, reinforcing its benefit as a rest stop. But for me, it's really all about getting those fries! read more

Beware of the hideous wait time in the drive through!! Just don't be lazy, and go in! I swear I have gotten my food so much faster that way! Last time I was here I waited almost 45 minutes at the drive through. No joke! And there was on 3-4 cars ahead of me! How is this acceptable for this type of place? Are they understaffed? Or what? This close the the major interstate this should not be ok! Especially as a drive-through! The other thing I was not ok with was the employee that waited on us didn't tell us of the daily special. We got up to the window and paid, then heard him take an order and say welcome to A&W and then go through the daily specials! I was pretty upset considering one of the things I had ordered would have been a lot cheaper had I ordered it that way! Now this is usually one of my favorite stops with my boys. But I am pretty sure I am going to have to reconsider our options now. For work, I find myself driving between Eugene and the West Valley at least monthly. Eugene and Corvallis both have great restaurants, but when you're on the go you really don't want to deal with the campus or downtown of either city. So I usually end up stopping here because 1) I take care of the food/fuel/restroom all in one stop, 2) it's right off the highway, whether I'm taking I-5 through Salem or 34 over to 99W, and 3) I have a weakness for A&W Papa burgers and root beer. Beware: eat here only at your own risk! My boyfriend and I stopped here late at night on a long trip from California to Washington. When we walked inside, there were flies everywhere. It gave us second thoughts about eating here, but it was late and we were in a rush to get back on the road. So against better judgement, we ordered 3-piece chicken strips and 2 burgers. Almost instantly after eating the burgers, my boyfriend felt so nauseous like he wanted to throw up what he just ate. I felt bad for him and thought he might've had an isolated case. It wasn't until the next morning that I quickly realized I had a terrible, TERRIBLE case of food poisoning. It has been 3 days since our stop at this A&W, and I still am food poisoned! Pulled in ten minutes to closing, was greeted at the drive through with "just a moment, five minutes goes by then greeted with, we close in just a couple minutes so make it quick, ordered and pulled forward, terrible attitude at the window, basically tossed my card back, slammed the window closed. Brought my food and when I asked for ketchup, sighed turned and grabbed some tossed them out the window and said k bye and slammed the window. I just went to A & W and ordered the daily special .. hold the bacon.. and the shift lead said sorry I can't do that for the special price.. . That would change the order. It would no longer be a bacon cheeseburger!! And so I asked so if I hold the onions does that also change it.. I was furious. Slow service like everyone else said took 15 mins to take an order I had enough time to turn my truck off for 15-20 mins waiting on my order everyone behind me just drove off because they took to long. Then they forgot stuff with my order so good thing I checked. Didn't get a receipt for my order. Needs better management and associates. Till this is fixed I would recommend Dairy Queen. Grew up eating at the original in Lodi and to see this place how it is is just sad! Needs major upgrades cause you can't hear the person when you order and they can't hear you. I just stood at the counter while I waited patiently for the employees to stop chatting about their personal lives to have neither one of them even notice me.
