Admittedly, I'm not a small town gal, so this whole experience was so fun. I chose to dine in, and a server directed me to choose a table and place my order with her. Much to my surprise, they had a Beyond burger on the menu, which was music to my vegetarian ears. I got it paired with cheese curds (my first!) and the most phenomenal root beer float. This root beer is unlike any other. It's served in an ice cold, giant mug. The smoothness of this combination with the ice cream is absolutely delicious. In town exploring the area we stopped in for lunch. Other A&W restaurants I have been in has counter ordering. This location you are seated and someone takes your order and brings your food. This is seriously the best A & W I've ever been to. Super friendly and helpful staff, they took our order from our table, and bussed the table afterward. Someone brought my kids coloring books and crayons as soon as we sat down! Also an employee walked around with a pitcher of root beer refilling mugs at least 3 times we were there! We drove the whole way to Faribault from Burnsville tonite for the hand dipped chicken tenders and a root beer float. We have done this many times. But the service and the food quality has been getting worse every time we go. Tonite was the worst. A young man took our order. Another kid delivered it. The food was all Luke warm and had been sitting around for a while. I complained to yet another server. She said she'd have it all remade. She brought it right back with hot French fries but same Luke warm rubbery chicken strips. They used to be served so hot you could hardly eat them. It will be a long time until we go back there if ever. read more

This is possibly just not my style of food. We stopped in for a quick bite to eat since it was kind of cute with the drive up style ordering and all. I had the fish sandwich which was advertised as batter fried cod with lettuce, cheese and tarter on a bun. It was really just like a gigantic fish stick with no discernible pieces of cod to be found. My companions had a bacon cheeseburger and corndogs. It all looked fine but no one was raving about the food. They do, however, have some pretty great root beer that they serve in big, frosty mugs. I must admit I have emotional attachment to this place since I have been coming to this place since I was a kid. I went in recently for a rootbeer float and was slightly disappointed. Although they still have the chilled glass and the good rootbeer they changed out the ice cream (to cheaper soft serve) and they now put rootbeer in the glass first and ice cream on the top which is does not give the great foam or flavor I remember from childhood. Still love the decor and friendly service but, wish they had not cut back on some of the special touches that made this place really stand out. read more

This has to be the best A&W that I have been to since 1982 when all A&W's were good! We went to A&W on a Friday afternoon after seeing it on a blue road sign on I-35. When we pulled in we noticed they still have the car hop ordering system, but then noticed that they also had indoor seating. There were about 6 cars who decided to try to eat a chili dog and other messy food items in the front seat of their cars. We decided to eat indoors. When we walked in, I was unsure what to do. I thought A&W was fast food, but there wasn't a menu board to see what was on the menu. A gal came up to us and advised us to have a seat and she would come to us to take our order. This menu had choices on it that aren't typically found on today's A&W menu. For example, they offered a pork tenderloin sandwich, which is what I decided to order. I came with fries or onion rings, but I chose to upgrade to the cheese curds. I was so impressed with the pork sandwich that I am craving one now as I write this! The A&W was served in a traditional frosty mug. It was so frosty that the A&W root beer started to form into ice! Ahhh, the way A&W root beer was meant to be enjoyed! I really enjoyed my trip back in time by stopping at this A&W and really can not wait to make another trip to Faribault to eat here again! read more

My memories of this first drive-in restaurant I ever experienced (long before Sonic) are better than my most recent experience. There are none where I live now and I LOVE A&W's root beer (their diet is amazing!) so going here when I'm in town visiting relatives is a special treat. I wish the meal we ate last night was up to my expectations. Based on the picture menu, I decided to order the hot dog meal with tots. When it arrived, it was covered with chopped onions on the cheese and chili. The picture did no show this at all nor was there a description so I took it to the counter. The young lady who seemed to be management was apologetic and quickly brought out a replacement to the table. In the meantime, I drank my somewhat flat diet root beer (loved the frosty cold glass mug!) and munched in a few tots from what looked to be around a 12-count batch. The hot dog itself was mediocre and small and the cheese was liquid cheese sauce, not melted shredded. My daughter got the three chicken strips and fries with white milk. She kept remarking how skinny the fries were (I guess compared to Mickey D's?) and said there were parts of the chicken strips that were "too hard" to eat. I also had ordered a side of Cole slaw that never came but I didn't realize it until I looked at the bill (we were eating with friend so I was preoccupied). The same young lady took the Cole slaw off the bill so with a tip, these two meals came to over $21! Granted, we were offered refills on our root beers from pitchers (reason for being flat?) around every five minutes but my daughter was never offered a milk refill. I think my happy nostalgia for this place will continue to just that; a memory. read more

This is one of the select few restaurants that does a driveup service. The restaurant has a fireplace inside also. The best part was the homemade rootbeer made fresh! First off, the location is perfect, and this is clearly an old authentic A&W Drive-In. My youngest kid absolutely loves to come here and get a meal with a root beer float. The reason for 3 stars is that compared to other semi fast food places, they really haven't kept up with food trends, and the service at this particular location can be very spotty. Horrible customer service when you eat outside. If you want a refill they tell you to go get it yourself because spiders can get in it. (Wth..they bring your first one ). Also we tried to order a hamburger kids meal and they said all they had were cheeseburger kids meals and refused to simply take off the cheese to make it a hamburger kids meal. My family loves this place. If I were to generalize I would say few establishments with a staff of nearly all teenagers provide good service. This place is an exception. We were really looking forward to eating at an A and W (traveling through). Nice inside, though very busy. Sat at counter in full view of front area. They had 3 people supposedly taking orders and another (plus servers) walking food out. After 7 minutes or so, we asked someone if they took our orders. They said yes. We sat there another 10 minutes, totally ignored, while the servers were grouped around the cash register talking heatedly among themselves. Obviously didn't know what they were supposed to be doing. Finally, one breezed past us without a word to take order of people who came in after us. We got up and left. Super annoying. Even a nod, or "we'll be with you soon," would have kept us in our seats. But after being ignored for over 15 minutes, we said screw it. It's a fast food joint, for God's sake. read more

Walked in sat down, front table right in front of counter by the take out door, very noticeable spot.... waited, waited..no water..no waiter...people came in had their orders taken, more people came in, took their orders...we were not approached at all, by this time everyone was getting their food, no nothing for us...Asked to speak to the manager...well where were you sitting, as though that should make a difference. unless they wanted to know who our waiter WOULD of SHOULD have been...we were not happy with the SORRY"...we wanted to order..we left..not a good way to run a business..yes they were busy but that's no excuse... read more

We had horrible service! Sat in our chair for almost 10 minutes while 7 employees stood around talking to each other. Finally had to wave at them to get their attention. Also had to go up to the after several minutes for our refills. Out of the 7 employees that were standing around we only seen one actually working and they kept telling him to bring the orders and pick up after customers. Cockroach Crawled Across our Table --- My husband and I decided to stop here on Saturday 11/18 for a quick lunch. We finished our meals and I went to clean up in the restroom. When I came back to the table I saw a cockroach crawl across our table. My husband took a photo of it and then I went to get a waiter - He came over said sorry, grabbed it and went back to the kitchen area. He also mentioned that he would tell the manager Matt. We waited at our table for a bit to see if Matt the manager was going to come over and talk to us. Well he did not. We went up to the register to pay and the cashier asked how the meal was. I told him good until the cockroach crawled across the table. Oh I am sorry is what he said and continued to ring up our bill - My husband said to the cashier "I would like to talk to the manager". As Matt came around the cooking area looking as if he did not have time for this proceeded to say ---I was busy - "what do you want." -- My husband replied "our meal for free and Matt I am going to contact your corporate office". Matt NEVER said that he was sorry for any of this. He then says well, you are good to go. --- I have worked retail and in the food industry and if that ever happened to me - the first thing that I would do would be to drop what I was doing and go talk to the customer right away and say I am sorry! Matt never did any of that and the word Sorry never came out of his mouth either! He acted as if we were just an inconvenience to him. We will never go back and we will tell our friends and family about the poor service that we got from the manager MATT! Terrible customer service!!! I entered and waited at least 15 minutes for a waiter to come to the table. Bear in mind all the while waitresses were busing the tables across from and next to me, and it laughter and loud talking from the back made it obvious that the staff was having a party back there. I ordered and then told my waiter to ask the manager to see me. When I explained the problem and perception, all she said was and I quote, "sorry 'bout that". Then she offered to pay for my meal, and I declined that. It's such a shame that young people today can't show any responsibility. That manager didn't do anything but offer me her company's money instead of doing her job of making sure it didn't happen again.
