Really excellent sandwiches. It's got the vibe and feel of an old fashioned deli, and they do only a few things but they do them very well. A full hoagie is rather substantial so unless you're very hungry/plan on leftovers a half hoagie and soup will do you just fine. read more

This is a busy place but they're not overwhelmed. There is a lot of art works on the walls which are actually available for purchase. Service here is very kind and at least today run by mostly college or high school age people, but that shouldn't deter you. Maria had a tuna hoagie and she said it was excellent. This was my favorite of the eateries in Northfield that we tried! We stood in a short line to place our orders, and the cashier was very patient and pleasant when answering our questions. I had a special request to omit the Mayo on my sub; and asked multiple questions about the soups. Everything we had turned out great; and was just what we ordered. There were 5 of us. I loved my cup of regular chili and half sub. I would order that again! They bake their own bread, meats are fresh tasting and I loved the light vinaigrette mix that was on the lettuce and tomato. The chili was what you would expect from a standard beef chili, but it was meaty and tomatoey; the cup was a perfect amount with the 1/2 sandwich. The restaurant is in downtown Northfield where there is street parking and a few small parking lots. There are stores nearby to do a little shopping! Great experience! read more

The small sandwich I got was skimpy but Ok. That's the best I can say about this place. I'll never know about the soup I tried to order because the distracted person taking my order never wrote it down ... and the sarcastic punk who brought my sandwich to the table immediately turned and walked away while I was trying to ask about my missing soup. How 'bout them Hogan hoagies? An ideal college town sandwich and ice cream shop. Friendly and well managed for decades. I recognized the same manager/owner from my college days 20 years ago! The best part of the hoagies is the fresh, hot wheat buns. The hoagies are way better than Subway because the buns and ingredients are simply fresher. None of the food is too salted. The White Bean Chili is a nice variation on the cold weather classic. You order at the counter and the food is delivered. Water is already poured and waiting for you around the counter if you did not purchase a beverage. And don't forget there's hard serve ice cream available to wash down your hot hoagie! read more

This place was a bit odd. Upon entering I liked the overall ambiance. We came for lunch and it was lively and fun and so a good start. Ordering, however, was somewhat unclear. The sizes of the sandwiches on the menu were confusing and so I ended up getting a massive sandwich that was about a foot long instead of something more manageable. There was not really line formation and so when a bunch of people came in behind us everyone was just bunched up leading to confusion as well given that you order at the counter. The food was just ok. All 4 people in our party ordered sandwiches and there were all fine, just. Nothing special. Also I noticed that they were warming all of the sandwiches up in microwaves which I found very odd. Two of us ordered soups and only ate a few bites. Both were not great. Maybe would go back for the sandwiches now that we understand the menu better but there are most likely better options in town. read more

I knew I'd be in Northfield with a little time to kill, so I had already decided to check out Hogan Brothers based on Yelp reviews. Northfield is a great college town with a lot of history, with the James Gang bank robbery being the most obvious. All the interesting places on Division Street are enough on it's own. The interior is dark with a very comfortable feel. The food is soup and sandwiches with a variety of coffee, tea, sweets, and ice cream. I ordered a half-sized combo hoagie with two cups of soup and a root beer float... and then another root beer float. They have chili and beer cheese soup everyday with a few others that change. I had a cup of beer cheese and a cup of chicken dumpling. Both were fine but nothing special. I believe the combo hoagie has three meats (the usual suspects), several veggies, and their special olive oil based sauce. I had mine without veggies, so naturally it was a little thin on the inside, but still very good. I think the best part was the bun. I was fresh and soft. Your teeth just fall right through it. No need to latch on with your molars and tug. The root beer float was fantastic, that's why a had two! I think it was Lift Bridge Root Beer. This is one of those places where good food and great atmosphere make it a spot you want to return to. read more

Nice enough people, sandwich may have been alright at some point, but the temperature really put us off. We ordered a few hot and a few cold subs. Seemed like a solid value. They all showed up the same. I can only describe it as "sweaty". Hot bread, warm lettuce, room temp meat. All in all, a clammy kind of briny sog with warm mayo. 5 of us in all, I'll admit, I'm gross and ate my whole sandwich because I was just that hungry. Still hoping I won't regret it but I'll know in 30min. Wouldn't have written the review if my wife hadn't brought the food up when the line was gone. My personal favorite lunch spot in Northfield. A great atmosphere and welcoming space. There if you are looking for an ice cream treat or a full meal. Notice to those who may be surprised later: Sandwiches are served hot. You can ask for them cold, but I recommend you try them as served. Sandwiches come in 3 sizes, 1/3, 1/2, or whole. I would suggest 1/3 or 1/2. Two people could split a whole sandwich, but it would be more than plenty for one person. They have a great selection of soups that can accompany a sandwich. They also offer select number of beers on tap if you are looking for a casual drink, though this is a family restaurant and there are plenty of other spots if that is all you are looking for. I do recommend the root beer on tap. Most of the staff are college students from Carleton or St. Olaf, so be sure to support them in a tip after the great service! read more

Stopped in with my niece and nephew today. We had a bowl of beer cheese soup, which my nephew says is the best he has ever had, how do they make it so smooth, creamy, and packed with flavor. We had a cup of chicken wild rice soup that while good was not as good as the beer cheese. We also had the combo sub that comes with 3 meats, lettuce, tomato, mayo, cheese, and Italian sauce. The bread is so so soft and fresh it is a great compliment to the meat and mix of flavor. It is warm but not super hot enough to melt the cheese. The atmosphere is great filled with locals, everyone stopping and saying hi and seem to know each other, great local spot! read more

And very entertaining at this time watching through the windows as people are still habitually looking for a sign requiring or not masks. Not here and the comedy continues as the line was an extensive snake inside on this warm day. The constant looking around trying to get a feel if it is actually ok to remove the haze and masks Half the kitchen staff was wearing one but as previous to the CCP Virus everyone was gloved up and washing. I went here for the first time last week with my mom, so I was excited to try this place again on my own. Food is really good. However, I will not go back. After I ordered, I realized I forgot to specify a meat so I went back up to the counter and asked if I could have only ham on my sandwich which he said he could do. This would've been a perfect customer service experience until a woman, I think a manager, came out looking for me and then reprimanded me for not realizing that "combo" was a sandwich and not a sandwich-soup combo. Furthermore, she used the words "if you ever order here again" which made me feel uninvited or as if I should never eat here again. I tried to explain that I was new here, but she gave me a stern look and walked away while I was talking. Keep in mind, I paid for multiple meats and asked them to omit 2/3 of the meats. I did not blame anyone and thanked both the cashier and the worker who made my sandwich as well as the person who brought the food out. The manager ruined my experience. I could have gone to a chain restaurant like subway, but instead went to a well loved local establishment. Northfield is what it is because of college students, but when management makes someone who is there alone to have a nice lunch feel put on the spot and unwelcome, that's not right. They've lost my business, my family's business and anyone who I know who wants to try it will be told about their managers rudeness. read more

Service and food quality is inconsistent whenever I visit. Sometimes I get what I ordered and it ends up great with no problem and sometimes my order is wrong or the quality of food just sucks. I visited recently and I don't know if the management has change because the people who used to work there were college students but it looks like a Hispanic family now runs the place. The menu is pretty flexible if you're looking for a great soup and sandwich. The soups are always excellent, which sounds to be the favorite part for most who stop in. The dining room is clean and spacious. It has some tables and also high-back booths, which can be handy if noise is a concern for you. They have a nice ice cream counter. I also like all of the posters/flyers near the front of what is going on in the area. They are great to look at while you wait in what is a fairly quick line. If they fixed one thing it would be to make soda refills easier/quicker, otherwise it's great! read more

So I walked in, purchased a sandwich from a short rude woman, which I figured whatever, maybe the food will be good (wrong). I get a ham sandwich and the person I come with gets a turkey, she asks if we'd like it to be a hot sandwich, like any normal person, I presume she means toasted (wrong). I get in my vehicle, drive 5 minutes open up my food and I realize they weren't just microwaving the soup, they were microwaving the sandwiches . They also added a ton of mayonnaise and tomatoes, which I explicitly asked for neither to be on the sandwich, but the person taking my order apparently thought they knew what I like more than I do. Even subways has a toaster oven, I do not enjoy subway and I'd rate them higher than this establishment at this point, which is sad because it's clearly an independent business that has beautiful decor, yeah the lady that took my order was rude and I didn't much enjoy her, but the rest of the staff seemed alright. You guys can do better, also the person I went with didn't get double meat and we had to use a microscope to find the meat on that sandwich. read more

Hogans had high recommendations, and appeared to have ice cream! Cute little cafe that sells hoagies, soups and ice cream. I tried the cherry, and it was super good! 1 scoop for only 1.86?! Great soup and hoagie place. You can get them hot or cold, in 3 sizes. They have chili and 5 others soups on offer every day. They also have 6-8 kinds of ice cream for sale. Peppermint Bon Bon is the best!!!!! My favorite hoagies are the salami and tuna hoagie, warm(no onion, tomato, yellow pepper) Look up at the board and it tells you what they put on the hoagie with out asking. You need to tell them if you don't want something. The chili is also a favorite! With cheese and sour cream. The staff has always been polite and courteous when serving.
