If you fail to understand the assignment, you really have no business putting scissors to a client's head. Just say something is not possible and save your client's from some pretty embarrassing cuts. We chose this place to get our boys hair cuts before school. They grew their hair out so the cuts were possible. They both picked pictures of similar hair that they wanted styled. We made an appointment and felt like 30$ was steep for a kids cut, but figured the rate was based on their experience level and expertise. We could not have been more wrong. The good news is, hair grows back. Kid's aren't happy, but in a few months we can take them to a place that knows what they're doing for a fraction of the price. I recommend tailoring your prices to fit the ability of your barbers, and verbalizing if you are unable to do what was requested, rather than doing it anyway. read more

The cuts are decent but way overpriced. They do overpriced kids cuts too, which makes the off-color, constant banter across the room between barbers even more inappropriate. Your barber may speak to you briefly, but the rest of the cut they will be chatting with the other barbers like a bunch of teenagers - past girlfriend escapades, their favorite MMA fighter, the R-rated movie they're playing on the giant TV while 5-year-olds look on, what they are ordering from the deli next door, etc. while paying customers awkwardly sit around and endure the total lack of professionalism that certainly does not belong in a place where you'll pay $40 for a men's 15-20 minute haircut! Anywhere else you can get two haircuts for that price, and you won't be subject to the immature whims of barbers who desperately want you to think they are cool. Look elsewhere. read more

I've been going here for about two years. Everyone there is not only professional but extremely nice. They are busy so definitely use their app "Booksy". I've had haircuts all over the world and my barber Zach is the best. For men they offer a variety of extra services which trust me woman appreciate-- waxing of nose and ears. Painless and a few minutes. Although I think because of the quality of the haircut the $30 fee (recently raised from $25) is worth it but still a little pricey considering they don't take credit cards. If they accepted credit cards, I'd be ok with the $30 but I think $25 is more reasonable with adding gratuity. Also the place is just a cool barber shop...well decorated, cool place. Again just make sure you book your appointment in advance and you wouldn't wait for more then a few minutes if any time at all. And make sure to bring enough cash because they do have an ATM but it's one of those off network machines that will end up costing you $5-$7 after their fee and your bank just to take out $40-$60 to pay for your haircut and gratuity. They still get five stars because of the excellent service, professional haircuts and decor. read more

I've been coming here for a few months. I'm a tomboy and prefer a very short, masculine, men's haircut that stays out of my face. I heard good things about A Cut Above, and because it was a barbershop and specialized in men's cuts, I thought it would be the perfect place to go. I had my third haircut with Michelle today, where she informed me as I was checking out that she would be charging me the price of a women's haircut, which is $20 more. She told me that even though I received a men's haircut and it was the same service, she charges all her female clients $55 so that was what it would be going forward. I will not be going back to an establishment that promotes price discrimination and charges some clients a higher price for the same service. read more

This place has raised their price of a regular haircut to 25 dollars. Hell if I am in Manhattan I can get a cut for cheaper. So that equates to 30 dollars plus tip, and you better tip. That is pretty much a given with any barber. The wait times are very long. I suggest coming here early or before people that leave work and school get there. This is expected because it is probably the best shop in the area. The barbers are cool but, they tend to be very inappropriate even when kids are around. I have seen some clients and customers become uncomfortable because of this. The best barber there is Chris and Genli (can't remember his name exactly). The kid with the tats and loud mouth is ok but, not amazing. JC will cut you up if you don't tell him to stop. Zack is still learning but he isn't that bad for learning. He just isn't as meticulous as Chris. Manny is good as well but, you need to tell him EXACTLY what you want or he will give you a skin fade without you asking for it. Tony is good if you want a simple cut and nothing crazy. This place is good once you find the barber that suits you. However, the increased price has put me off and I am searching for a new barbershop. read more

This is a great shop from the day they opened! They have continuously improved the quality of the shop, services, and products that they offer. The owner is always here cutting hair, cleaning, and ensuring that all the customer are well taken care of. All the barbers are friendly and very skilled. A nice mix of masonry and modern look give it a comfortable feel. There is plenty of room to sit on the couches if you have to wait. With up to six chairs going at times you won't wait to long. Three tv's to watch and some great artwork to look at. A cut above as turned the chore of getting a haircut into experience I look forward too. read more

I just had the most upsetting and unpleasant experience at A Cut Above Sparta's BarberShop. I have heard great things about the place from Dan and other local people and I don't doubt they have great people but I unfortunately wasn't so lucky this afternoon. As a mom of your first, the first hair cut can be rough to let go of the first locks. Almost two years and I finally took the plunge. My first red flag was when I went to their website online and made an appt and they didn't have my appt in the books with the artist I booked. I should have left right then. The owner was able to get me in with someone (I don't even remember his name) who was open and I trusted that when I said I just needed a little trim a professional would be able to do that. I said let's start out with a half an inch-inch and go from there. Fast forward to the clippers and the first couple strokes through my sons baby hair and he practically had shaved off the whole back. I started saying NO, that's too short I said a half an inch and he kept going to which I then i walked out crying. My baby now has a full buzz cut minus the top that was able to be saved a little. My first baby's first hair cut was nothing less than horrible and I feel jipped from the whole experience. I barely have any photos and I have been crying since I left. Trust your instincts; and don't just go with whoever is available. This guy disregarded everything I said and completely chopped my sons hair off. F you to the guy who ruined our first experience together. I hope you never sit another child in your chair again. read more

So this has been a that I've wanted to visit since they were on Main Street in Sparta. Why didn't I? Because they're cash only and I almost never carry cash. So instead I just went to Supercuts and was done with it. Boy do I wish I had just used their ATM and got my hair done here sooner! So I arrived roughly 5m before opening this past Monday. Already a couple guys there. It's their busy time of year, everyone wants to look good for the holidays. I had just finished up No-Shave-November and I hadn't had a haircut since the middle of October so I was a mess. I walk in, sign in, and take a seat. I'm called up pretty quick by who appears to be the youngest guy there, Zack. Zack asked me how I'd like my hair done and I told him flat out that it was totally up to him. He could shave me bald and I wouldn't blame him but I wanted him to do what he thought would look best. He tried a few more times to get SOME direction from me but I really just wanted him to go with his gut. I couldn't be more thrilled with the result. Zack took his time and was incredibly meticulous. I'm now sporting the first beard I've ever had in my life. I don't think I've ever had so many compliments on a haircut before. Everyone there was incredibly friendly. Zack took the time to explain the different ways I could do my hair and how to care for it. The atmosphere of the shop overall was amazing. It was my first time in a real barbershop and I highly recommend every guy give it a shot. My first straight razor shave as well! It doesn't get any better than this. Sure, it's a little more money than Supercuts and it's cash only but do you want to look good? If so this is your place. read more

Went in for solely a straight razor shave. In the past, I did my own hot towel shaves at home, as well as different barber shops in the area. I also had some good shaves at A Cut Above's old location on Sparta Ave, when they were above Homer's Restaurant. Decided to treat myself and see how they were at the new location. Walking in at around 12:30pm, I was met with dead silence from the staff.. probably 4 males, 2 females, all sitting in their own barber chairs, staring at me. Eventually someone greeted me while they were still seated. I said I'd like a straight razor shave. Usually, there are one or two people in a shop who can do it well, and everyone in the shop defers to them. In this case, everyone just stared blankly at each other for a few seconds, then two barbers, one male one female, decided between themselves that she would take care of me. Customer service tip: Greet your customer right away. Maybe even smile at them, if you want to overachieve. Also, there was no music playing. The whole staff was silently watching South Park being blasted on one of the TV's. Come on. Very uncomfortable environment, felt very awkward. After explaining to the girl what I needed (taking half of the width of my beard off, and squaring off along jawline), she set about the job, and gave me a hot towel after I asked for one. It was the speed that she moved that told me she was inexperienced. After 30 minutes, she finally raised me up to look in the mirror. It looked like barely anything was done, I was merely shaped. I told her again what I needed - to take about half of the width of my beard away. Once this was done, she told me I was good to go. At this point, I had to tell her to clean up the area below my lips, and thin out the mustache. Usually these are assumed to be done by an experienced barber. I asked her how often she gives straight razor shaves. She told me "pretty often... a few times A DAY." I seriously doubt that, it took 45 minutes for a very simple shave. Granted, 10-15 were the oil and hot towel, but the way she handled the blade and treated my face I could tell she wasn't very adept at it. To top it off, they charge $30 for this shave. Shave alone. $50 if you want a haircut. This to me is a good 20-30% above the typical price, which would be fine, if the job was actually done well. It's 2 stars, not 1, because technically, she did the job. Just took a painfully long time, from someone clearly inexperienced, the environment was uncomfortable, and the price was a way too high in return for the job performed. Also: A person who has 1"+ long nails should not be shaving anyone. Multiple times her nails were poking my lips and around my mouth, which is just gross, if you know how dirty the underside of girl's nails can be. I would go back and just use a different person, but the combination of high price and the quiet, unfriendly environment, it's just easier to go somewhere else. read more

I have experienced their service to be discriminatory at best. They ignore the old, the overweight, and any others not fitting or conforming to their non-diverse young aged group and style of cut. If you are not a regular, they will define you as not loyal to their brand and also discriminate. Just today; I signed in and was passed by three other patrons until I spoke up. Been going here for years before moving away. Back in town I went back at their new location. What a change. I left looking like Forest Gump! Barber was rude and rough. Never spoke to me. Barbers instead talked to each other in a crude banter they obviously thought was entertaining. Haircut took less than ten minutes. When I went to pay the barber still wouldn't speak to me. Instead he had his head down fooling with his phone. Place is for lowlifes. Found a new barber who said it would take two more months to even out that hack job! read more

Let me preface this by saying they always cut my sons hair nicely, always looked great so they are talented. However, that only gets you so far to be a repeat, happy customer. We have been coming there for 2+ years & I just can't do it anymore. Multiple people have told me over the years that they found better shops elsewhere, and now I have too. The wait times are out of control, 1 1/2 to 2 hours on some visits, and if they were professional I wouldn't have an issue, it's when they are constantly chit chatting among themselves, I feel purposely being slow, saying inappropriate things in front of children, stopping to eat (at 10:20am! When you open at 10) honestly, that was my last straw. When we got there right at 10am open, there's 10 guys in waiting area, and the barbers all order food & eat it. You couldn't eat before open or at lunchtime? It's so rude & shows a lack of urgency & professionalism. Not to mention it's $20 a kids haircut, crazy. read more

I give them a zero!!! I had to give a star to post. This is long, but you need to read it! I'm a single, working mom of 2 boys. My oldest son is autistic. My youngest son preferred going here, so we did. The wait time is usually about an hour and you cannot make a reservation. Every time we've gone there, my autistic son loses his patience and has a meltdown. They've seen it! The wait time is way too long. Honestly, it's torture for me going there. Listening to inappropriate chitchats among the barbers and answering their personal phone calls, when cutting a clients hair. Yesterday, I had enough!!! I called twice and spoke with a manager explaining my situation. Expressing how my autistic child can't wait and could he please help me out. We had gone in the day before and the wait was long. He had a major meltdown, and we had to leave. My youngest son was so upset. I called the manager to help me out in this situation. He asked what time I was coming in the following day and said he would do his best to help me. When I got there, we checked in, but were ignored. They all had clients, but I heard one barber say to the others, "Is that them?" Three more clients walked in after me. They were all greeted with, "Hey, how's it going?" After 30 minutes of waiting and them calling 3 clients before us, I said, "We"re leaving." They did not respond, until I explained to another customer, why we were leaving. If I could give this place 0 stars I would. I went on a Saturday afternoon and it wasn't very busy so I only waited a few minutes. Unfortunately, once seated the bad experience began. After quickly asking what I wanted the "barber" (and I use that term loosely) proceeded to cut away with nary another word to me until he was done. That doesn't mean he was silent, he was just engaged in a discussion with two idling barbers who were sitting in a small break area. Since my cut was rather simple, a number 2 clipper cut with a number 4 on top I wasn't too concerned about the outcome. My mistake. When I was able to see the cut I pointed out that the top seemed uneven, to which the barbers reply was well I can just make it a crew-cut. After arriving home I was able to get a good look at the hack-job and was disappointed with what I found. For the next twenty minutes my wife worked to even out the lunar landscape that was left behind by the barber. I will most definitely not be returning to this place. read more
