I hired Veronica of A Gift of Thyme to plan and prepare a 4-course meal for a group of 10 women in a rental house in Sonoma, and I could not have made a better choice. I interviewed other chefs who seemed capable enough, but Veronica was the most professional, organized and talented.
First of all, she was upfront about her cost per head - and the cost was very reasonable based on other general quotes I had received. Cost per head is a very useful way of presenting the info, because at the time, my guest list was still somewhat incomplete. The other chefs I spoke to gave me broad estimates, but all said the final price could vary widely depending on menu selection.
Secondly, she was very communicative and responsive; I'm on the East Coast, so we emailed a lot - she always responded within a day. We had a few phone conversations, which we scheduled due to the time difference, and she was always available when she said she'd be. She was very easy to talk to; I had a lot of questions about her menu and was a little indecisive, so her detailed descriptions and opinions were very much appreciated. She knows gourmet, eclectic food but more importantly, can describe it to a non-foodie.
Thirdly, she went above and beyond what I would expect. Since our dinner was being held in a rental house, she took it upon herself to contact the landlord (got my permission first) to find out what was available for her use - ie, about the kitchen, serving, and linen supplies. She also arrived with flowers - which she used for centerpieces and decorative touches. This was totally unexpected and absolutely lovely. And, she brought a beautiful printed menu that was placed at each setting - gorgeous. The day-of she arrived on time - quite a feat considering that traffic in that area is so unpredictable on a Friday! Veronica was also very accommodating - some of my guests were a little late in arriving, and Veronica was perfectly calm and capable of shifting the schedule ever-so-slightly. She brought along a server (her husband!) who was there-but-not-there; very professional and efficient. There was no additional charge for the server.
And the food - the food! - was wonderful. We had 3 appetizers, a salad, entrée, and dessert. To say everything was delicious seems too broad of a thing to say - but it truly was. And while it was recognizable food, the selections were not anything like we've seen from restaurants we frequent - meaning that my guests felt rather adventurous, chic and sophisticated. From the appetizers to dessert, the food was amazing. (I don't usually describe chicken as "amazing," but it was.) And, the amount of food was perfect - we were definitely full by the time dessert came out, but not so much that we couldn't have at least a few bites. Finally, everyone commented on the lovely presentation of each part of the meal - each dish was individually plated and looked like it could was ready for a gourmet magazine photo shoot.
So, in conclusion, I wish I could move Veronica out to the East Coast and hire her once a month to prepare gorgeous and delicious dinners for me and friends! I highly recommend A Gift of Thyme, absolutely the perfect choice for an elegant, chic and delicious in-home dinner. read more
