Service was OK for a last minute appointment. The owner is nice but couldn't care the least if YOU don't have a nice experience. The quality of my nails for 90 dollars- awful. Nails chipped (DIP) first day. I was shook. The pictures are five days old now. Nails didn't last. Chipped within the first and second day. Five nails are chipped after five days of service. The nail polishes are old. My toes look awful and the top of the dip for my finger nails was so old they couldn't get the lid off. So that's why the colors are mismatched. I didn't get the polish I asked for nor a manicure, the older woman that did my nails was very kind, but she shouldn't be doing nails. My pedicure massage lasted under a minute. The whole pedicure, in total, probably took 20 minutes which isn't acceptable 40 in total because the last 25 was dealing with the nail polish. For 90 bucks go somewhere else. The vibe here is nice and relaxing but I only recommend on a must-need last minute- no where else to go- this is your last option. Terrible. How down hill this place went. read more

DO NOT GO HERE!!!! I went 8 months pregnant and left crying. i called ahead to make an apt as this would be my last apt before baby comes, I had the worst apt in my 15 years of getting my nails done. Not only did I leave crying, the older woman doing my nails burned every single one of my nails using her tool and did not stop even though I kept saying it hurt, refused to let me use my phone in an emergency so I could check on my daughter, asked for my password on my phone and wouldn't give it back, wouldn't let me put my OWN shoes on so I could use the restroom after sitting for an hour, and avoided putting any nail polish on. I finally told her I'm done and walked to the front to checkout. The owner proceeded to tell me I owed $60 for the terrible service I received. I was shocked. I go after all this and no polish you're going to charge me $60?!?! this older woman yelled at me throughout the apt, I was holding back tears. I've attached photos of a gel mani/pedi that cost $82 altogether. First of all, both colors I chose were unavailable. But what I'm here to leave a review about is the obviously unprofessional service I got. The tech seemed confused, difficult to understand and rushed the pedicure. She seemed to work as if she had learned how to do nails on the job, not someone who has had professional training and licensed. It was as if she was mimicking a nail tech and didn't really have the learned skill and understanding of a professional. Naturally the manicure wasn't any better. I sat down with her and she was getting ready to paint my nails with the same color until I pointed out I had picked a color for my mani. I have scratches on my cuticles from her buffing my nails (really fingers) carelessly. 24 hours later they're still painful. Fortunately the polish was nude because it's in my cuticles as well. It's easy to attack the nail "tech"; not only does it look awful, it's physically painful. But I'm going to put most of the blame on the management/owners. I worked in the spa industry for a long time and unfortunately, hiring unskilled people is a thing. The owners can quickly take more unwitting customers and not pay the worker what a professional is worth. Sometimes they take advantage of someone's immigration status. It's only a matter of time before it backfires of course. I'll also comment on the rushed service that's been noted in other reviews: if a spa is rushing your service, then they are definitely rushing the hygiene aspect. What you don't see is scary. AJ Nails is a piece of home for me. My mom and I have been customers of Jason and Joanns (the owners) for over a decade. I have always been met with a smile at the door, friendly conversation with the staff, and a detail-oriented nail experience. Plus, they have stayed on top of COVID protocols better than any other salon I've seen. Walk-ins can sometimes require a wait but they will be realistic with you about timing if you just ask. If you're someone who likes to make appointments, find an employee whose work you like and request them each time. At this location, Lee and Nikki are our preferred techs! I'm disappointed to see so many negative reviews on here about supposed rudeness of staff and undesirable nail outcomes. 1) Please keep in mind that most of the staff is English Second Language so there is room for communication gaps. I frequent this location often. They have some good nail techs but they also have some that are not that good. Most times I am highly satisfied and then there are moments like now that I am not happy. I believe this was the quickest pedicure I have ever received, in and out the chair in under 30 mins. However I am more upset that I had my daughter with me to be serviced and someone came to service her after I was done. I would have waited until we both could be taken care of. Don't bother making an appointment. We made appts for 4 mani/pedis. We requested 330. They asked if we could come at 4. Showed up a few minutes early. They had no one available, started the first 2 pedis at 420, by 430 they still didn't have anyone for the other 2 in our party. So they left to get a walk-in elsewhere. No consistency. The girl continued to ask if I wanted a razor used on my foot no! She darn near insisted.... I have no idea what top clear coat she used on my nails, very sticky and wouldn't dry.... as they say you get what you pay for... I should have listened to all the other reviews warning me to stay away from this place. This place is horrible! The customer service here is nonexistent. The lady working the front desk, I believe her name is Joann was extremely rude. My lady kept yelling at me that I was holding my feet wrong the whole time I was getting a pedicure. I also watched as another lady finished a client and left her sitting on the pedicure chair to go start on another pedicure. A few minutes later she goes back to the lady that she finished and told her she was dry, she then puts oil on her toes, rubbing it all in, with the SAME gloves she had on while she was doing the other pedicure. She then goes back to work on the pedicure that she had started WITHOUT changing her gloves. Why these ladies didn't say anything, I don't know why? Guess I won't be coming back. read more

Honestly, I read the reviews before I went for my first visit and felt a bit iffy. They are literally a few blocks away and I just wanted something convenient. I have rarely waited long - 15 minutes tops, especially if I've made an appointment. Every person I have gotten has been friendly and really has done a lovely job with both a mani and pedi and I come out feeling better than when I went in. The salon is nice, large and fairly upscale and the prices are very reasonable especially considering it's in a high-end area where they could ask and get a lot more. I have always had a great experience here! I usually get shellac and a pedi. Everyone is always so nice too. But this last time I just wanted my dip removed and a mani. I thought it was time to let my nails breathe. A woman I have never had take care of me took care of me. She proceeded to use a fake nail to peel it up and tear it off taking my nails with it. I had small cuts all over. It was pretty painful too. She wouldn't speak to me either. My nails are still growing back from mid March. I kept asking her "don't you use soaked cotton and let it sit?" The owner is racist! I called this place-a woman picked up the phone. I asked if they accept walk-ins, she said yes and that they were not busy. I drove there and was turned away with the owner saying they don't accept walk-ins and they don't have appointments. In the nail salon was 1 guest being serviced. I showed him my call log and he even pulled my number up on their caller ID and still refused to acknowledge the call I made and the information I was given. This is the only place around here that is open every day, opens late, located conveniently, and staffed extremely well. The customer service was very good. Lee was kind enough to make a great recommendation regarding what kind of nails I should do. I don't understand the poor reviews. First off, this is the first time I've written a review on Yelp. I've been trying this salon on and off for a couple years. I spend on average $100/mo. Yesterday I popped in for shellac. There are only a couple manicurists that do a good job, so I asked for one of them. They were busy, so I made an appt to go back tonight. I arrived a few minutes early and saw the person I was scheduled with was finishing up another client. I waited patently. The woman waiting next to me was told it was a 30 minute wait with anyone, but she had been waiting 1 hour with no communication.from anyone. I waited for 20 minutes, and decided to leave. The owner didn't even apologize for the wait. The best part? As I was waking out, I saw the person I was scheduled with starting a pedicure. Never, ever, will I give my business to people who do not have the common courtesy to be honest and respectful with their clients time. A very clean, relaxing and fun environment. I have seen several different people and I have been had consistent service from everyone (although Joanne is my favorite). I usually get a pedicure and shellac manicure which lasts me 3 weeks with no chips or peeling! I'm very picky about the shape of my round nails, surprisingly so many nail salons are awful at shaping my nails. Here everyone is very patient and makes sure I am happy with the shape. Sometimes there can be a long wait so it's helpful to make an appointment. After trying several other places in the area, this is by far my favorite spot in Grosse Pointe. read more

My first experience in June was my first and last great experience. The young lady who rendered my initial service I have not seen since and since that time my experiences have not been pleasant at all. She really took her time and provided a real service. Mind you, services are nearly $100. Today was my 3rd service and my technician was extremely rude to me. She was hard on my nails in the removal of the product, she knicked me extremely hard with the cuticle nippers to the point of bleeding, and ultimately my request was that she not file my nailbeds due to her unnecessary roughness. I am not opposed to people being bilingual; however, I think it is extremely rude to not be able to communicate with your client when you are patronizing them. Which is what happened today. Another young lady decided to be the interpreter for my technician and started speaking harshly to me. It was her nastiness and tone that finally made me get upset because it was not warranted. I do believe that they were talking in their native language about me and it made me feel extremely uncomfortable. Do they have an assortment of colors? Yes. Does the salon have a nice appearance? Yes. Do they have a lot of technicians? Yes. But you are paying for a quality product and service and when you are not met with that standard, none of the other stuff matters. I like this place a lot and have come here off and on for years. they do great pedicures and have an excellent polish selection in both shellac and regular nail polish. the reason I don't give five stars is that when I walk-in or call ahead I often don't get an experienced technician who can do my shape. my nails are a pointy/almond shape and several times when I have requested this shape (with pictures) I get either total confusion or even a flat-out rejection like "are you sure? you don't really want that shape" and it's a real bummer. hey, i get it, a pointy shape is annoying to do, it's time consuming to file, and it's difficult to get right. I'm probably not the most low-maintenance customer either. but, this is a nail trend that's been going on for a while now, shouldn't the entire staff be trained in it? I'm not going to stop going, everything else about this salon is great, but there are other places in the area that are a bit more up to date and I'd like to see it here too. fwiw, at other places I've actually been upcharged for the pointy shape of my nails! I don't mind that at all; it is extra labor and takes longer to do. I think there's a real opportunity here to update the (otherwise great) staff on newer trends, and maybe make a little more money off of high-maintenance customers like me :) read more

I walked in here for a no-chip manicure and was able to get right in. The tech helped me find a color (there's a HUGE selection!! awesome!), and was very patient with me. The manicure was pretty basic. I do wish she would have spent more time on my cuticles and hangnails. I had to dig one out when I got home, but not a huge deal. She did great with the polish and the oil hand massage at end was really nice. The mani was $36 total, which I found to be a little steep. Overall an average experience. Just had a horrible experience. I've patronize this spa for a number of months. Often felt unwanted because I'm black. But I figured it was all in my mind.The technician today was rude (it didn't leave any doubt in my mind)she didn't even put a towel underneath my hands before starting the procedure. She snatched and bent my fingers to the point where I had to ask if there was a problem. I was left to sit for 20 minutes. I watched other customers that came behind me well attended to. I usually don't have any issues with this place, however the last time I went in for a shellac I had a pretty negative experience. The technician aggressively filed the skin on the side of my pinky finger, cutting it open. My finger started bleeding and is still healing a few days after. I also had clear gel polish all over the tips of my fingers when my shellac was complete. Pretty disappointed and most likely won't be going back. read more

I had an appointment on 8-10-2020... 1st time guest and I didn't have a good experience. I picked out the polish that I liked and my nail tech kept telling me the color was too light, She said you should try this and brought a color that I did not like and said it's very popular everyone likes it...I always get neon colors especially in the summer... And she's doing my pedicure and she keeps making crazy faces at me like Shaming my toes (I have pretty feet) first of all it's been Covid so I haven't been able to get them done for the past month... And when it's time to polish my toes with the color I requested she kept acting like it wasn't going on good and it's too light.... so she brings back the color that she originally suggested, Eventually she says in her broken English "you too dark for this color your nails to dark for this color" I was highly offended Seeing that I'm the only African-American that was in the nail salon... I allowed her to change the color to one she Suggested or pushed upon me rather and I ended up hating it! Then it was time to pay I got a manicure and a pedicure. I went to the front and the man who was in charge got on the phone and did not acknowledge me whatsoever. I stood there waiting finally my nail tech comes over and says give me your debit card, I said well how much is it first they start communicating in their own language and said it would be $74... he never acknowledged me. However he was catering to all the white Customers, making Conversation treating them with good customer service as I should've been as well but wasn't... it made me feel very sad... Final bad experience here - 4 strikes and no more benefit of the doctors br from me. Long waits even with appointments. Very half-hearted pedicures with no foot massage, no pampering at all despite the higher-than-average price. Technicians don't seem to know the basics. This last visit I just walked out after owner told me to take a seat but nobody came to even put water in for my feet to soak.
