My husband took it to bestbuy geek squad and they convinced him the charging port had come unsodered from the motherboard and pushed deep into the port hole. They couldn't fix it and said apple charges $300 for that fix. We decided to take it to phone zone for a cheaper repair (quoted less than half the price of apple) and lo and behold it was just a metal piece of the charger like we originally thought.
