I would never have found this shop if it wasn't for the reviews here. It's located off the main drag so you might miss it if you aren't looking. This is run by a couple, who according to the owner Patrick (who was manning the store when we were there) they aren't artists themselves, but they seek out artists from all over. There is a wide selection of art from sun catchers made of wrapped colored stones, and paintings on wood to vegan leather purses and wood turned pens. We stopped here and purchased a painting my partner wanted and then returned to pick up my purse before returning to the shuttle bus. I just couldn't leave without buying it. I'm sure if we had more time, we would have spent more. Bar Harbor has lots of tourist stuff. If you are looking for that special item to take home, check this place out. read more

Bottom Line: A lovely building with whimsical and interesting merchandise and friendly staff. The Little Mad Shop relocated to Rodick Street in a striking, Victorian-ish building, about a year ago in 2022, I think. The store features unique decor, jewelry, accessories and home items. I spent the most time looking at colorful local artwork, sniffing a variety of perfumes and eyeing up some lovely leather goods. While I didn't buy anything I certainly appreciated the friendly staff and the variety of whimsical an quality items for sale. read more

Such a fun shop and amazing customer service. Jolene is so sweet and the house itself is charming. A guest house is also listed to rent for vacation. I found this shop online while looking for home goods like Art and lamps, etc. Their merchandise is unique and reflects real Maine artists and their taste. It's across from a big public parking lot but not visible from either Cottage Street or West Street. read more

A beautiful little shop in a building you can see down the block. They have lots of great items with some really intriguing and moving artwork, and the prices are very reasonable. Turn a wrong turn and had to stop in here once I saw the place and glad I did! Lots of really cool souvenirs and art. Loved the vibe and everything about this place. The woman running the store was very cool and took time to explain things to us. Seriously the coolest shop I've ever randomly stumbled upon in all of my travels. I felt an instant connection to this place the second I walked in. This place spoke to my soul. It was a whole new world filled with the most pretty, unique, magical things...& the sweetest shop owners too. I ended up talking to one of the owners for a while about astrology, the stars, the moon, jewelry, perfume, & art. He even shipped me a moon necklace they were out of. If I ever end up back in Maine, I will definitely be visiting this place again. read more

What a great little shop. We're so glad we found it. We were looking for non-traditional stores after we went and got our traditional touristy items, like mugs and shirts. This store looked good and the name piqued our interest. We walked in and were greeted right away. Last year I loved this store and purchased a couple of items. This year was very different. Inside A Little Mad not even 5 feet away from me a staff member welcomed in a customer who happened to be a local. While they were chatting the conversation included the person stating they were playing tourist for the day. The staff member then jokingly brought up her neededing to wear a Bar Harbor sweatshirt that the tourists wear. While no harm may have been intended this is in fact making fun of tourists. I just happened to be wearing a Bar Harbor sweatshirt (the morning was cold and rainy and we were supposed to be going rock climbing so why not throw it on). I couldn't believe the nerve the of the woman. Needless to say I put down the pieces of art and perfumes I was going to buy and left without spending a penny. I posted this review elsewhere with less clarification of the situation and the response received from the store wasn't great. Instead of just apologizing on behalf of their employee it was explained that myself and the five people I was with all misheard/misunderstood the employee. read more

I really liked this store. It is so different from the rest of the touristy stores in town and their selection of items is more like an artsy boutique than anything else. I really liked that they had a broad selection of Tokyo Milk perfumes and lotions because they are only carried at select stores. I loved their stone bracelets that are by the cash register! I can't remember the exact name of them but they are fifty dollars where I live and only twenty-five dollars there so I bought a couple to bring home with me! The customer service at this store was also really great, they were helpful but not pushy and seemed knowledgeable about their products. We went here several times while visiting and each time we noticed something different that we hadn't seen before because their collection is full of a bunch of cute little jewelry and other darling items. Such a cute little shop. I stopped in twice over the last few days just because I couldn't help it. They have such cute, eclectic and interesting things! They have the most beautiful stained glass feathers hanging in one window. They are pricy but I think would really add a whimsical flair to your window. There were other really interesting items in the store and I had to tear myself away from those glass feathers! Ultimately I purchased a really cute necklace and earrings that look amazing on. The guy working in the store was a delight! He was funny and so helpful, also very friendly. My family visited Bar Harbor for the first time this July. We were walking through the shopping area and came across this shop. Esthetically it is completely charming and whimsical. This is probably the most eclectic and fun shop on the island! The merchandise is really high quality at reasonably affordable prices. Great place to find the first few pieces of an art collection or the perfect nick nack to pull that one room in your house together. But the best part about the shop is the staff. Family owned by the most wonderful family in central and coastal Maine. If Patrick is there, he's sure to be a bouncing ball of wonderfully positive and joyous energy. The whole family is friendly and outgoing and approach sales as peer relations. They don't try to sell product, they just want to get to know the people who come through their doors and make them apart of their lives. I love this shop so much! One of my favorite stops in bar Harbor! Not your typical touristy gift shop. This place has really awesome eclectic things! There's candy too! The staff who work there (maybe the owners?!?) are super sweet and love their shop! They are happy to Chat with you and make you feel like long lost friends! This year I bought a bunch of these hilarious Lego greeting cards! I can't wait to give them to friends and frame a couple for myself! Such unique and fun things! I'm a local here in Bar Harbor and I can say with certainty that A Little Mad is my favorite store here on the island, and perhaps my favorite store that has been here in YEARS. Personally, I am unable to look in the store windows when I walk past it on my way to work because I just know that something will catch my eye every time and pull me right in! No matter who you are shopping for, you are bound to find something in this store that will captivate you, excite you, steal your heart, or give you a cozy kind of nostalgia, or all four at once! If customer service is what you look for, the owners (Patrick and Jolene) are some of the kindest and friendly people you will find on MDI. They are genuinely interested in meeting everyone who comes into (and inevitably loves) their shop, and a quick chat with them is enough to brighten your day. It is so refreshing to find a place in town with quality art pieces, interesting accessories, magical knick-knacks, and store owners who have a deep and sincere interest in what they are selling. Just steps from the cruise ship dock but a world away from the run of the mill tourist/souvenir shops typically found in a vacation destination. A Little Mad is filled with truly beautiful and unusual gifts, treasures and works of art. There is something for everyone here and finds at all price points. While the adults are busy admiring the jewelry, lamps, pottery, etc., the kids have their own area to explore - complete with huge retro candy counters! I was checking out the usual shops in Bar Harbor when I saw the signs for A LITTLE MAD. My curiosity was immediately captured, so I asked my cousin if he wanted to check it out. I'm glad we did, because I found this cool change purse that had a picture of a fat cat on it. It reminded me of my own fat cat who passed away three years ago, so I bought it. This was my first trip here, and it won't be my last. I have got to go back there and see if they have anything new and exciting. Being a fan of local art, this place just earned a spot on my list of favorite stores in Bar Harbor. I also loved the handmade teapots, which looked like something straight out of Alice In Wonderland. Did I mention the cool handmade wall clocks? I wish I had one in my kitchen. That would definitely brighten up the space. What else will I discover on my next trip? I don't know. I guess I'll have to get A Little Mad again and find out. read more

Bar Harbor is full of the touristy shops with t-shirts, hats and other assorted junk Most of it is made in China. However when my wife and I stumbled on this shop hidden in an alcove on Main Street wound a real gem. It contains a real eclectic assortment of artsy items and jewelry which you don't see anywhere else. The owners are really pleasant and will give you a tutelage on everything they sell. We left the store $300 lighter and quite pleased with our treasures. We could have spent more but we have a budget to Adhere to. read more
