I popped in here a few times while in the area, and each time, I found something I had not seen before. Staff was super engaging and friendly. There was a huge variety of items, from local food, soaps, candles, hats, shirts, toys, housewares, and other wonderful things to remind you of your time in beautiful Bar Harbor. I also found the prices to be pretty on par with the rest of the area. I am enjoying my treasures now that I have returned home. I also appreciate the reusable bags they gave out. Bottom Line: A quaint store in the "Acadia Shops" family more geared towards gourmet foods, kitchen stuff, and housewares but also selling plenty of souvenirs. The Acadia Corporation owns and runs eight different individual stores in the Bar Harbor area that collectively are referred to as "Acadia Shops." This specific review is for the quaint Acadia Country Store. Because the Acadia Corporation is running many stores in Bar Harbor stuff really starts to look the same from store to store but the Acadia Country Store seemed to have a bigger focus on consumables like Stonewall Kitchen jellies and syrups and homemade fudge. Drats, I should have gotten a photo of the fudge display. Anyway, I enjoyed looking at kitchen stuff like cookie cutters and Swedish dish clothes while the hardwood floors quaintly creaked underfoot. I loved this store. I mean there are a number of kind of touristy souvenir type stores in this area obviously, but I really liked this one. It had unique items that weren't your run-of-the-mill Bar Harbor Tshirts and sweatshirts (don't get me wrong, I bought all of those things too). While the Acadia Country Store feels about as touristy as it looks, there is no doubt there is a good amount of stuff here that would make for a quality souvenir. Many of them are of the edible kind, while it's not quite the same as a mug or keychain, the treats go a long way for folks seeking local treats. Speaking of locals, the only ones coming here might be the employees. I digress, the food angle is the one reason I'd come back. For starters, they have one of the most robust selection of maple syrup I've seen outside of Canada. Who knew Maine was such a maple purveyor? Certainly not I. There are also wines, coffee, rolls,muffins, delectable jams (just say yes to blueberry!), and cheese ball samples that are too addictive to ignore. If the maple syrup and sugar wasn't enough, the actual devotion to sweets they have is nothing to scoff at. The aroma from the fresh homemade cookies and cinnamon rolls give the store a nice homey vibe. Then there is the fudge. Some of it was premade and sectioned off to be sold, but they have actual days where they make the fudge in house and bust out samples for the sweet tooth'd purveyor, in child or adult form. For the summer month visitors, they usually have an array of homemade gelato, which highlight some of the local flavors (Remember that blueberry from earlier? It's even better in gelato form!), all while helping folks cool off. While I haven't even touched upon the rest the store has to offer, like their endless Maine themed apparel, books, china, signs, etc. With so much stuff, the place feels cluttered, though that's hardly my reason for the star deduction. That's simply because the prices feel a tad on the high end. Bar Harbor isn't exactly a budget friendly city to begin with, but when one ups the ante in these types of shops, those price tags become somewhat eye opening. read more

Sure, they have a cruise ship load of the same cheap knickknacks as everyplace else, but some of their wares are thoughtful, handsome, and well made. After spending a LOT of time deciding on numerous compelling options for both personal souvenirs and gifts for others, I walked out with some balsam fir pillow-sachets, a moose-themed tea towel, a magnet of Bass Harbor Head Light, and a build-your-own sixpack of fine Atlantic Brewing Company beers. I could have bought much more such as t-shirts, children's books, oven mitts, blueberry jam, etc etc. What really sets this place apart is the fudge counter. They offer about two dozen flavors, of which we purchased four, all of which were very satisfactory. read more

The manager, Kate Goshorn, needs to be retrained in customer service. We encountered so many nice people in the stores and restaurants in Bar Harbor, and she was the exception to this. We are from a very busy tourist town very similar to Bar Harbor and being rude to tourists who are spending money is inexcusable. read more

They specialize in fudge (lots of flavors, including the expected cookies & cream, and rocky road; but also Maine-focused blueberry fudge, and blueberry cheesecake; and some wacky stuff like watermelon fudge). Hubby and I were in disagreement on which flavors and how much, but the gal working the counter patiently waited for us to finish our spat, and didn't mind doling out the ridiculous half-inch slivers hubby asked to purchase. The store wasn't too busy when I shopped there so it was easy to navigate and browse. They have a nice selection of typically overpriced tourist stuff, but they are a little weird about returns. I bought some jam here for my boyfriend's family, only to realize about 15 minutes later that it wouldn't go carry-on (FYI: jam is considered a "liquid" for TSA purposes, and even the mini-jars of jam sold here and elsewhere in Bar Harbor are 3.75 ounces, too big to go carry-on). I went back to the store (with the receipt) and explained this to them, and asked if I could exchange the jam for some blueberry coffee. Despite the fact that I had a receipt, they were very stand-offish about processing the return, instead telling me that I could take the jam in checked luggage. When I explained that I didn't have checked luggage, the woman informed me that I should just check the carry-on bag I brought to Maine. Excuse me? I'm supposed to pay $25 and wait an hour at baggage claim just to bring this jam home? After I insisted I was going to be returning the jam, and asked to speak to a manager, I was finally able to get the jam returned, and ended up buying the coffee from here (I didn't particularly feel like it, but I also didn't feel like running all over town just to find coffee at a different store). So hang onto your receipts and be firm if you want to get something returned or exchanged here! read more
