I've had two massages by Roxanne. Most recently my main concern was a tight and painful neck I've been struggling with for months. She worked on it with a combination of hot stones, her hands and other tools - tuning forks, different bells that are new to me - and for the first time in ages it is pain free and I have full range of motion back. If you're used to "traditional" Swedish or other massages, some of what Roxanne does will be unfamiliar and seem a bit strange. If you can trust that she knows what she's doing (which she does) and experience it, at the very least you will have tried something new but likely, you will feel the benefit. If you don't want those things however - just tell her! She listens well and constantly seeks education on new techniques and healing massage therapy approaches. She also checks in throughput the session to make sure the pressure and other aspects are comfortable and acceptable. Besides that she is kind and generous with her time and knowledge. It took me about two months to recover from this 'massage'. After a visit to the ER, several chiropractor appts, and physical therapy, I feel about 90%. A few years ago, my friends got me two gift cards to Massage by the Sea. I tried calling over and over and over again and it was almost impossible to get a response. After months, I asked for a refund and she was incredibly rude and had some "IT guy" call me???? I finally got a refund after hours of work on my part. Now years later, she left an incredibly rude voicemail asking if I had used my gift card and saying that I had told her " I didn't want my gift cards" after multiple attempts to schedule appointments. She almost demanded that I take down my review on yelp. I really recommend that Roxanne get training on how to be polite to customers. read more

The San Juan Islands are known as the Salish seas. The name of this healing studio cannot be whimsical. The proprietor practitioner has gone to extraordinary effort and expense to decorate the studio in a unique ambience. I had a treatment with singing bowls which I fondly refer to as "Spinal Gong" type therapeutic application of tuned sound therapy. It is free from whimsical idea at all although I have seen a few reviews and it appears close-minded and whimsical mentality to say such things about such an amazing experience. It is well researched and well documented concepts of sound healing therapy and I experienced precision application and it has long-term long-lasting residual beneficial effect on me . I suffered from brain injury from MVA and have been recovering for the last 20 years. My girlfriend and I went in for a couple's massage, and we were ironed out in the best ways possible. She got her knee worked on to where it was pain free, and I got my shoulders relaxed for the first time in a LONG time. We both were given a hot stone treatment, and it's a nice change from how I've been treated in the past; deep, but even pressure, with the added benefit of heat. I regularly get massages to help my crazy back, which is always tense and full of knots because of a couple of degenerated discs and a sedentary, stressful job. So I've been around the block a few times, and Roxanne gives the best massages I've ever had. She starts out using tuning forks and singing bowls, which, although I first thought were a bit crazy, relax my back more quickly than anything I've tried besides actual acupuncture. Feels great and sounds very peaceful, with a happy "bong bong" of ringing bell sounds around you. My back is immediately a ton easier to work on, and then she moves on to give an incredibly thorough massage using hot stones. Roxanne is incredibly intuitive and knows her anatomy very well - she quickly honed in on issues that chiropractors and physical therapists have warned me about in the past. She took time after the massage to show me some good stretches for the psoas and muscles around the ITB. She tries hard to make a good experience but I prefer a good solid Swedish or deep tissue massage. She used the hot stones to push into me as a way to massage me vs. her hands, the whole time. I am used to hot stones being used for just a portion of the message which is usually a nice add-on. I kept thinking at one point she would use her hands but that didn't happen. She also spent some of the massage time putting Tibetan bowls on my back and sound therapy. I prefer just a good solid massage with hands and not interesting twists. If you are into all of that then you would probably like her because again she tries hard and clearly takes her job seriously. Also there was a snafu with her needing an intake form but she had no paper copies available and no wifi or cell coverage and needing masks but no extras handy. read more

I exercise a lot and my job requires heavy lifting occasionally, and because of those factors, I have frequently chosen to go to Roxanne to get a massage. Due to COVID-19, she has had to undergo the same protocols as anyone in this type of business. You go in, get your temp checked, and then wear a mask while you get a massage, and she wore her mask. It was very professional and awkward, but we made it work. Awkward, because who wants to wear a mask during a massage? Roxanne, utilizes techniques that I never thought would work to alleviate physical pain, and she is very knowledgeable about the human body. The Tuning Forks, Singing Bowls, and Essential Oils she uses in tandem with relaxing music, has this de-toxifying effect that can be felt well after the massage. She is one of the BEST Masseuses in the San Juan Islands!! She has a customer in me, for life! read more

Excellent massage experience during my brief stay on Orcas Island! Typically, I get monthly massages near my home, but since I was heading to Orcas I sought a different experience. I found my way to A Massage by the Sea from Yelp reviews. Roxanne was wonderful! She took time to explain the techniques she was employing (hot stones, deep tissue, reflexology, harmonic sound therapy) and provided me space to relax. I was seeking treatment for neck/shoulder pain that I have ongoing, as a result of working long hours at a computer. In addition, I had hiked a few hours the previous day, so my hamstrings were tight. I selected the 90 minute orcas seaside special and was more than pleased with my experience. My only wish is that her business was closer to my home. If you find yourself on Ocras Island, wanting a massage, her place is definitely where you should seek respite and healing. read more

Bodywork with Roxanne is unique and fluid. The ambience of her space is the first hint this is no ordinary massage. Soothing lighting, blues, greens, silks, shells, glass art, it's like stepping into a gypsy caravan. Experienced and skilled, she is patient and tenacious in coaxing fascia and muscle into softness. I have had several massages here for relaxation and general tension, this is easily the best place EVER! great atmosphere, music, decor, true professionalism.. Why I am a devoted fan is..I recently had shoulder injury, thought it would require surgery. I discussed with Roxanne my issues, she pressed on muscles, found problem spots, worked on them acute with several techniques, hot stones, Lomi, deep tissue, for about 90 minutes. Most bizarre, almost comical, experience. I called A Massage by the Sea on a friday afternoon, hoping I could get in that day. Roxanne was very accommodating - she had a potential client she was waiting to hear back from and would let me know. We set a tentative time which she later confirmed. When I arrived (on time), the place was closed, but then Roxanne ran over from the restaurant across the street, let me in, introduced me to an old dog she was dog-sitting, and while I waited in the somewhat cold and dark, she went back to finish her dinner. Upon her return, and before we got started, she took the dog out and I went to the bathroom/laundry room to find dirty towels and half a can of open dog food. This was not included in the photos. She asked my reason for coming and I told her that I had over-worked and had tightness and muscle ache and was looking for some relief and relaxation, mostly shoulders, upper back, neck. We were now running late, I confirmed a 45 minute massage. Then it got weird(er). She turned on the heater - the place was freezing - and typical massage music. The massage felt frantic and rushed. Quick change from tuning forks to Tibetan singing bowls to warm rocks. I am up for anything, but this was rushed, and any hoped for relaxation was interupted by my saying 'ouch' when rocks or pressure was on bone (spine) and not muscle AND when the music went to commercial AND the many times she suggested I visit her studio in Kenmore (I live in Seattle). Time was up, I dressed and asked what I owed her. She asked what massage I had wanted - did I look on the website? No, I did not look on the website, jsut wanted a relaxing massage. I am paraphrasing, but basically she says, 'Okay, $100. I went over a bit, it was almost an hour. I had to rush'. read more

I don't usually go in for methods that are too out there and I'd never heard of tuning forks and 'singing' bowls as part of a massage but I have to say that I am a complete convert. Roxanne is first and foremost a wonderful masseuse. She uses different tools and techniques to provide a healing and restorative treatment. Hot stones and the essential oils make for a great deep tissue massage. Really the absolute best hot stone massage I've ever had even without the other modalities but I found myself really feeling good with the entire treatment. Take my advice and book 90 mins. I have gone over the hour I planned on both visits with Roxanne and would have even enjoyed more time. Fortunately, she was able to be flexible. I went in with very specific pain issues and walked out 100% better. Plus she is right in the heart of Eastsound so easy to walk in or make an appointment to be sure you don't miss out. read more
