The best local business I've used in at least a decade. I got a great hybrid bike at a great price, that I'm still loving a year-plus later. And everything like tune-ups, oiling, and flat repairs are free. (Ron fixed the flat by replacing the tube.) After a year, one of my gears started skipping a gear, which I pointed out when he replaced the inner tube, and Ron pointed out where the wiring had frayed some--probably whacked against something, he said--and he immediately stripped it all out, replaced it and fine-tuned it expertly. No charge. Had me test ride it around the block, to be sure. The 1st thing that impressed me, though, was when I came in looking in August, there were a ton of bikes, but I'm 6'1" and Ron said none of them were big enough for me, but he would get more in 3 days, so call back then. I really respect someone who WON'T sell me something, because it's not right. They're very close so I stopped by a few times, we talked more, and he had a big enough road bike, but he said what I'd been describing was a hybrid, and if that's what I wanted, I should wait. He went over the pros/cons of each, and I said definitely a hybrid. He said he got far fewer, so I checked in every week or two, and in November, 3 months from the start, he had a hybrid big enough. It was perfect, and I bought it. I wanted a more comfortable seat, so he had me pick the one I wanted from all the bikes and he swapped it in. I bet 99% of customers would have gone somewhere else long before, so he'd given up most of his chance at a sale, and could have easily sold me on a shorter bike being ok, but wouldn't do it. Ron is super-nice and great to talk to, and his wife Sonja is too, so it's always a pleasure. Love this place. read more

Went for a tire repair, which cost $20. They installed an inferior tube that didn't last two trips before it went flat again. The one I originally had lasted about two years. They claim that they check the tire, but there is no way to tell with their doors closed all day. When I first picked up the bike, the brakes were detached. So, great attention to detail there. The valve also didn't match the the type I had on the front wheel, and it doesn't fit my air pump. When I called to talk about it, they basically shrugged the whole thing off. Money down the drain. Will never go there again. read more

I discovered this bike shop yesterday and dropped my bike off asking if they could have it ready today at 2 or 3pm. They called me and had it ready. The owner Ron and another mechanic Devante were very kind, genuine and personable and introduced themselves by their first names. I was so very happy to find them. Free parking out front. Honest, good people. Told me if I had any issues to bring it back, said 60 day warranty on labor. Wow! That's amazing. Never heard that from those countless, overpriced, overstocked bike shops. Tune up was very reasonably priced. What good luck I had. I would send business their way any day. Owner wasn't familiar with Yelp when I mentioned I had decided to try them based on their Yelp reviews. Cash only. They sent me on my way saying to "drive safe." I didn't have any caps on my valves on my tires and they put them on as they handed me my bike. They're less than a mile from the bike trail along the Lake. Great location for when you want to repair or tune up your bike and then go riding afterwards. Was so very, very happy. Almost makes me wish I had more bikes to take into their shop just because I really had a great experience. No frills, no pushing for sales, just an upfront bike repair shop. You can tell they work hard. I'd give this place 6 stars if I could. This will be my permanent go-to bike repair shop. Love these guys. read more

This small, disorganized store is a GODSEND for anyone looking for a RELIABLE, affordable bike in Chicago. The bikes are all fully restored (with new tires) and maybe slightly over their "blue book" price, but seeing as all purchases come with a 2-month warranty (covering even flat tires), the price is well worth it. I was looking for a commuter bike and bought an 80s Raleigh Reliant for 200, which seemed to be the price of most of their female commuter bikes. They have a really good selection which is constantly changing. I also bought an OnGuard u-lock (one of the nicest u-locks I have ever seen) for $25, which they assembled to the bike at the store. I've had this bike for 3 months of heavy use, and any problems I've had have been of my own doing (or attempted thievery by others). It is an amazing, reliable bike....the epitome of what I was searching for. They don't accept credit/debit cards, so you have to pay in cash. The only ATM in close vicinity is at the liquor store across the street but it seems like it's out of order quite often. There is also a Chase bank a few blocks away, but it is probably better to plan ahead and bring cash if you are planning on making a purchase. If the prices and products weren't enough of a reason to check this place out, the guys at the shop are so friendly, nice, & knowledgeable. They don't pressure you or give you any attitude. Huge fan of this shop! Sonya is beyond friendly and helpful. With so many people coming in, I love the fact that she remembers you. She fit me for a great bike, they gave it some updates and was willing to negotiate a fair price. I absolutely love my bike and it really is nearly new! Very, very happy that I found this place, thanks Yelp! Love this place. They were super helpful and accommodating, working with me on a difficult bike seat that was too low and offering solutions. They explained that the post I had was sinking after being adjusted/raised before and replaced some parts to address it. The seat is the perfect height now and is stable, no longer gradually sinking as it was before every time. They also oiled some rusty parts and my bike is super comfortable now. This is a great shop for repairs or purchasing an affordable bike. Even when they're busy, they've fixed my flats and competed minor repairs within 10-20 minutes. Ron and the team are always helpful and straightforward. Just a few weeks ago I bought an amazing 1992 Cannondale handmade aluminum road bike from Nearly New and rode it to Milwaukee (93 miles). I've done a couple 50 mile rides since then, and the bike is so solid. Nearly New gives a 60 day warranty on their bikes and will fix/adjust anything that goes wrong, which is surprising for a used bike shop. Unless you're cycling professionally, don't bother buying a $1000+ bike. Nearly New has very sturdy $200-300 used bikes that will get you around Chicago and beyond. Having lived in Chicago 14 years, this city can be very tough on bikes (theft, damage, weather), which is why a used bike makes much more sense. Pay Nearly New a visit. read more

This was the closes place to my apartment. I was 30 min. away I called and told them as they were scheduled to close in 15 min. They told to come and they would stay open for me. The two Rons & Avanti went above and beyond for me today. They fixed what Uptown Bikes & Johnny Sprockets (Andersonville) couldn't fix .... or rather WOULDN'T fix cause it would take more time than their allocated/set price for such work -- a wheel truing. The two Rons didn't care about THAT! They cared about fixing my wheel so I could get out riding! And the thing was...I actually didn't bring my wheel there to be trued!! I brought the wheel in as an example of what I needed in a replacement wheel for my 1988 Schwinn Sierra. I'd hoped but didn't REALLY think they'd have a wheel from that era..but nothing ventured, nothing gained...so I took a shot. They did not have what I was looking for in stock at that moment...but Ron ASKED what was wrong with the wheel I was carrying. I showed him and told him that the two aforementioned shops had said there was nothing they could do to fix it. Ron grabbed the wheel and immediately went to work... I mentioned that I hadn't planned for that and needed to go get cash (THEY are CASH ONLY). He said take your time...so I went grocery shopping & came back about an hr later. He was still working on it but had it 97% done.... But one of the nipples was stripped and the spoke was on the cassette side. And that 30 yr old cassette was NOT gonna come off! After a few mins the Second Ron came up with a brilliant solution! As soon as he did it..I knew exactly what he'd done cause it was literally the only thing he could've gotten away with without ruining the thing and I was amazed he'd thought of it! A simple, brilliant idea! All of this was going as we were all having a great conversation and laughing about a list of things. Felt like I was hanging out with old friends even though I'd just met them an hour or so before. And to top it off, they only wanted to charge me the standard rate for a wheel truing, $20!! Even though they'd spent way more time than I know either other shop had spent! I gladly paid double and Ron was ARGUING with me that that was NOT necessary!! WTF! LOL. THAT'S WHAT SERVICE IS PEOPLE!! The thing is...that wheel was bought in '89-90 for what was good money for a wheel of that time and that quality... A new replacement of the same quality would have cost more than double what I paid 30 yrs ago and might not have been of the same quality! $40 for the repair was a steal and saved me 3-4x+ more for a comparable new wheel. They made a new customer today and I made what I hope are three new friends! If I can get either of my teenage sons to FINALLY take up riding (and the love of it..) like their old man... This is where we'll be getting their new bikes from! I'm writing this msg at the lakefront where I've been riding for a few hrs thanks to the TWO Rons & Avanti! GREAT JOB GUYS! ----------------- These guys and businesses like this are the kinds of businesses we should be supporting with serious efforts. Most businesses, large and small, are so bottom-dollar oriented that we, the customers, become nothing but a walking dollar sign! How RARE these days to find a business that cares more about getting the customer what they need.. even if it costs them more time than they had planned and/or they don't make as much off this or that customer as they think they could. These guys were just trying to make sure my wheel worked.. PERIOD! They took the time and effort to make it so! They didn't try to sell me a new wheel and start throwing out numbers like the other shops did (Uptown quoted me $175 for new wheel and calibration). THEY DID THE WORK! And for their efforts I was very much appreciative! They earned a new customer and my loyalty. They are my new bike shop. read more

I had a Columbia Trailhead mountain bike that I got from somewhere for cheap or something like that. It was whatever, but I desired a road bike. I walked by last night and saw the bike I wanted. It was a green Schwinn road bike. I had tried to repair my Columbia bike and basically effed it up even more. So I talked to one of the workers and he told me to come in as soon as they opened the next day because of Critical Mass they were going to be busy. So I was there this afternoon at 12pm when they opened. I told him what was wrong with my current bike and he told me how much it would cost to fix and that they really don't deal with mountain bikes because they are all plasticky and yadda yadda. So I took a look around and the green as well as silver bikes were the two that I adored. The silver one had been sold, so back to my initial want; the green one. He changed the wheels, heightened the seat, polished it up and I was all set. $150 quick for a beautiful bike. Plus 2 months of free service if anything goes wrong with the it. They were too nice..I love this place. So my old bike..haha..I was walking and this guy was staring at me with it and I asked him if he wanted it... Him:"what u selling it?" Me:" no you can seriously have it..." Him:"what's wrong wit it?".. Me:"ohh I broke the gears trying to fix it but 1..2.and 3 work..oh and the chain rubs and peddles wobble but it rides get on and try it out.." Him:"oh shit man cool..I was wondering how I was gonna go get my check from work now I got a ride, thanks yo!".. ...he rode off..lol I guess I made his day..with a broken but ride-able bike.. read more

1. Cash only. 2. Most of the bikes in the shop come from estate sales, and their inventory of awesome vintage bikes changes pretty regularly. But if you're looking for something specific, and you give them your number, they'll let you know when something comes in for you. Also, they specialize in single speed conversions. 3. Caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaash. 4. If you need a quick fix, like a tube patched (or a new tube altogether) or your wheels trued of some drop bars sawed into bullhorns, they'll do it ASAP. 5. For cold hard cash-ola. 6. When my friend was looking for a new bike, this was the first and only place I had to take her. They let her try out a few different models and stressed the importance of the frame actually fitting her, rather than trying to make a quick sale. 7. But when they do make a sale, they should be paid in CA$H. 8. They're sincerely nice dudes who will not make you feel stupid in the event that you know nothing about bikes. read more

COST: - Flat Tire Repair ($20 for TWO inner tubes plus labor!) So you guys know that movie Clueless? Well I really don't have anything witty to connect that to, but I just wanted to say I am clueless when it comes to bikes. So much so that I rolled my newly assembled bike to this shop because I had flat tires. I suspected the online retailer didn't send me a defective bike and instead, I had somehow already blown my tires up! My dude at this shop confirmed my suspicion! So you see, clueless. I was absolutely clueless. The other reviewers were right in saying this place is as good as it gets. Terrific and welcoming to customers especially ones who are big idiots at their craft. The guy knew exactly what was wrong, said it'll be $20 total and it'll be done in a jiffy. I was not sure if they accepted credit card but I wasn't going to put them through that hassle. It started pouring on the way to the ATM so my dude said I could wait for him to finish the repair and I could use it for a spin to get his payment. Who does that?! In Uptown no less!!! Not that I'm suspicious or anything but still! That's how you know these guys are the bomb. As I was waiting for my repair, a girl walked in asking if they could inflate her tires. They said yes faster than I type this. The other mechanic saw her shoes were wet on her basket so he offered her a bag! And she wasn't even a customer!!!! I wish I could write 30 reviews for this place because they have always had my back for anything my bike has needed. I bought my Raleigh from them this fall and because I had to bring it in a week later for my brakes squeaking, they gave me an extra 30 days on my warranty. FIrst of all, how amazing is it that a used bike shop gives a warranty? Second of all how great is it that the have had my back outside of that time period as well? Today I brought my bike in after riding it 5-7 days a week all through this winter. I had not been taking as good of care of it as I should have, so it needed quite a bit of work. I got my bike back to the condition they sold it to me in, for a very reasonable price. This place is truly as good as it gets. I recommend everyone I know to go there and will continue to do so. Back on the trail in search of a bike to replace my stolen mountain bike, I decided to try this place, as I was in need of parts again as well. I wouldn't go so far as to call it the "best bike shop ever," but their selection of unmolested and nearly-new touring bikes is impressive. I saw pristine bikes dating back to the 1970's with still-soft handlebar grips, untorn seats and nary a chip in their finishes. Plus unconverted to single-gear as well. A purist's delight. They did have the part I needed, and the fact that they are open until 8 pm is amazing (most shops keep odd hours...like when you're at work). However, I do have one gripe about A Nearly New Shop that prevents me from giving it five stars. I asked one of the assistants a simple question. Me: "Have any mountain bikes?" Assistant: (insert jaded snarl) "Neuoo." Look, it's retail. I'm sure you all had a long day or whatever, but put aside the attitude and your personal views.
