Amazing experience here. Didn't realize they were open 7days a week or I would have come in earlier but I got off work a little earlier and walked my bike over an hour before closing. The owner recommended a basic assessment first since this was a bike I just got from a friend. With the assessment he filled my tires, checked for leaks, adjusted my pedal and handlebar tightness, and oiled my chain up. He also taught me how to shift gears and pointed out my bracks were switched (right hand controlled front). In the end he also lowered my seat for a better fit. The assessment was great at ensuring my bike was ride ready and not dangerous. He also recommended what would be good follow up and pricing if I wanted a more thorough tuning for problem areas that he showed me during the assessment but wasn't pushy about it. I was back home with my bike before in under 30mins. Great price transparency. Owner had great knowledge of bikes and brands. Also has free automatic tire pump and recommended I drop by every 1-2wks to keep my tires plump. I'm excited to get back to riding with this new bike! read more

The Heartbeat of a Raleigh It was 1973 when I first met the bike. A Raleigh Grand Prix, fresh from the shop, bought sometime around eighth grade. I rode it through high school, into college, and beyond - sometimes 110 miles in a single day, all the way to Wisconsin and back from Rogers Park in Chicago. It was my freedom machine, my companion, my quiet witness to growing up. And then, like so many things, it went quiet. Life moved on. The Raleigh went to the basement, beat up and forgotten, its wheels stiff, its frame dulled by time. Twenty-five years later, I found it again. I brought it to Adam, an incredible and dedicated bike builder working out of a storage garage on Hubbard Street. His shop - Peddle to the People - was small, independent, and full of heart. I told him I wasn't in a rush. I just wanted the bike to live again. He took his time, texting me updates as he sourced vintage-compatible shifters and other parts, matched the front derailleur, ordered washers and small fittings - on and on, with quiet dedication. I told him, "I can feel its heart starting to beat again." When I saw it today - cleaned, polished, with new wheels, new tape, new brakes, cables, pads, and so much craftsmanship - I was nearly in tears. It wasn't just restored. It was respected. Adam had honored the bike's history, and mine. I paid him in cash from our moving sale to save the credit card fee, rounded up to $850, and asked him to please keep the balance for all his hard work. He'd earned it. He'd brought something back to life - something that was such an important part of who I was, and who I want to be again. And now, as I prepare to ride again - this time toward our home in Arizona - I carry not just a bike, but a story. One of memory, patience, and the quiet joy of revival. I was walking down Damen, carrying a wheel. (It's tube just popped near Armitage.) I was on the phone, grease up the elbows, bummed I just missed getting to the store on time. Then, Adam, a bike angel, rolled by and asked if he needed a hand. Behind him, I-kid-you-not: a mini-repair-shop, attached to his bike . If that sounds dramatic, it kinda was - in a great way So, Adam fixed up my tire. Then, it got even better. He talked to me about my bike. (I love bikes but I adore my own; it's a favorite topic.) Adam is invested in working with owners; it's important to him. He's got some awesome training and is a great teacher. It pays off immediately. For instance, I was cursing this year's epic potholes for my popping tires, which Adam didn't contest. But he also explained how the type of tires I had (skinny, vintage touring) are more likely to pop and how the air pressure plays in. I felt like the smartest kid on the block and now understand how to pick tires for the appropriate city. I took the opportunity to talk with Adam about a short list of items that needed tending. (Seat, racks, locks, lights, etc.) I'd gone to the store a couple times but the sticker shock made me realize that Suze O would want me to process - ask myself, are these things that I needed or that I wanted? Adam, who also has a store in Bridgeport, broke out a catalogue and helped me order everything I needed (wanted) at prices that Suze O would ok. (I replaced a my roommate's light for $12 bucks less than she paid, etc.) Adam used a rad device to scan my credit card, sent me a receipt immediately and delivered the items to my house when they came in. A note of caution: I am the kind of person who buys her bike from a sketchy guy in Danville. This sketchy guy may or may not know why the brakes are acting funny. Luckily, Adam totally does! Adam showed up with his mobile bike service contraption and went to work on my front lawn. I was a little worried my landlord would be upset, but Adam explained that this was part of his advertising. Someone tried to break my ULock while my bike was parked outside a train station. Luckily they didn't succeed, but the lock was busted afterwards. I spent hours calling up locksmiths asking for quotes before I stumbled onto Pedal to the People. I was able to schedule an appointment the next week to cut off my ULock. He meet me at the train station, quickly cut off the lock, and offered me great deal on a new lock. The total for the lock removal and a new lock-$50!! The locksmiths quoted me at $120 minimum. What a great service, I'm super impressed. I'm a fair weather rider who gets an annual tuneup, so my bike really doesn't need anything fancy. I saw Pedal to the People on YouSwoop and gave it a shot. I mean, HE COMES TO YOUR DOOR! How great is that? Adam, the owner and operator, is super friendly. He chatted happily as he cleaned, tuned, oiled and generally did some reassuring poking around my bike. He educated me on some safety measures and looked at a couple of things that are not part of a regular tuneup (my speedometer and air pump) at no extra charge. i got a flat on my way to work this morning and didn't have time to fix it - i locked my bike up at the nearest train station, and then started to run through all my options. none of them were good. Seriously. Adam is great. I'm new to biking. I ride a boys mountain bike that has been sitting in my parent's garage since 1995. I decided to take it home with me when my mom asked me to throw it in my Jeep and take it to goodwill. It seriously needed a tune up, but I was sort of embarrassed to take it to a bike shop. The handle grips are made of duct tape... Its rusty.... Its a tweenaged boys bike. (I'm a short girl, it works great). My biggest fear was that they would try to sell me a bike at a bike shop. I secretly love my bike, you know, like you loved your first beater car. You didn't care if you backed into a mail box, or someone dinged you in a parking lot. Someone would have to be real desperate to steal my bike....and honestly I couldn't be too upset if they did because its so awful. But...I love it regardless. I purchased a tune-up through you swoop and made my appointment. Adam sent a text and asked if he could come a little later, he was running behind. You have to realize with what he is doing, he can get a little backed up. If a bike needs a little extra TLC, or traffic sucks etc. But it was totally OK with me. I didn't have to "come back later"...I just sat around. Anyway, Adam is amazing with bikes. I sat and talked to him for the whole tune up. He can carry on a full conversation (and actually listen) while working on a bike, without slowing down. He certainly knows bikes. He really just wants to bring cycling to everyone. He's not about getting rich. Just making a living doing what he enjoys. He is just as excited to teach you how to fix your bike, as to have you pay him to do it. He has no problem giving the "secrets" away. That's what's great. He loves this, and honestly wants to bring it to people. He wants to eventually have bike "workshops" at his shop where people can come in and learn how to work on their own bike. As someone new to riding my bike in the city (~1 month) I was glad that I didn't feel like I wasn't "cool" because of my beginner status, or shitty bike. Like everybody who rides pretty regularly in the city of Chicago, a few weeks ago my bike tire was stolen. It sucks but it happens. I had a spare tire at home so I lugged it to where I left my bike to fix it. What do you know? Pedal to the People is set up right there. Not only did they attach my new tire but gave me a full tune up and some much needed sympathy. Now my bike is chugging along better than before. I scheduled this service online the day before. Adam came to my building right on time riding his garage on wheels. He served me the Platter Deluxe Tuneup. I have a 2010 TREK FX 7.3 which had been left outside for several weeks, thick dirty buildup everywhere, shifts non-functional, break pads gone. I used my bike daily for work-home commute. OMG, I have an amazing bike again that rides like NEW. He even changed my winter tires to summer ones for the same price! And the whole process was under 90 minutes. tl;dr - Adam is friendly, his rates are reasonable, he's punctual, and he does good work. When the spokes in my back wheel got snagged in the derailleur on my morning ride, the damage was pretty impressive - the wheel got out of true, part of the derailleur broke, and part of my frame actually got bent from the stress. I threw it on a bus, and contacted Adam when I got in. He actually came out to my place of work that afternoon and, while he didn't have a replacement part with him, did monkey my bike back into good enough shape for me to ride home. He was back two days later with the replacement part and his mobile workbench. Trued the wheel, straightened the frame, replaced the derailleur, and got me back up and rolling. read more

Great guys. My bike broke down thanks to a large pot hole in the loop. I was lucky to bump into Adam while walking my bike down Randolph on my way to dinner. The name says it all - Adam brings his bike servicing station to you. My apartment building hosted him this weekend and I was able to have him do a diagnostics test for any issues, pump m'tires, lube the chain and give me little hints and tips to keeping my bike fresh and bad to the motha flappin bone. He charged me $5 which for some might sound steep since the air is free at all bike shops and the can of lube probably costs less than $5, but I appreciate the service and love to support a good biz.
