First Review (5 stars): In the past, I have taken my prop here to be reconditioned. They were fast and reasonably priced. I have also gone to them looking for a hard to find parts, the counter staff are friendly and helpful. They happened to have what I needed. Next week, I will be taking my boat in for major repairs. I will let you know how that goes. Update (0 stars if possible): That was September of 2022. I did take my boat in for an engine replacement in October of 2022. We received our boat back in January of 2023. De-winterized and out for the 20 hour break in period in May of 2023. Two hours into the break-in, we encountered the same noises that sent it in for a new engine, back to the shop on warranty work. On June 12, we got it back and took it out to start the break-in period again. After spending 15 hours on the lake, we finally got our first 10 hours and time for the oil change. We mentioned that it smelled of burning oil and it was hesitating or stalling when putting it in gear from neutral. We were told it was normal and could be expected for the first 100 hours. I have worked on cars for most of my life, and this was news to me. In September of 2022, we finally got the 20 hours completed on the break-in and took it to a different marine specialist (due to a lack of trust with A Rock). They did the 20-hour oil change, winterized, and did a bore scope on the engine. This revealed scoring marks from the piston rings, a rusty head, and signs of oil blow-by, indicating the rings were not doing their job correctly. Again, in May, I returned it to A Rock with the photos from the other company. They took another month to change the heads and told me it was 'good to go.' Skeptically, I left their shop and went straight to the lake. Thirty minutes in, it was doing the same thing. I drove it straight back down and told them it wasn't fixed. One month to the day, I got the call that another "new" engine had been installed. An engine, come to find out, they had had in their shop since January but was told they had to order it in and that was the reason for the time delay. I took the boat straight out to the lake again, and it was still plagued with hesitation and stalling. The burning oil was gone, though. I found two spark plugs with cracked porcelain, so I replaced them, and that took care of the stalling. I have another 24 months on the warranty, so we will see how this holds up. I have hit my 20 hours of break-in and again took it elsewhere to get the oil changed. The ladies at the counter are friendly and seem to care about the issues, but I will never have them touch this engine outside of the warranty ever again. In summary, If you need something off the shelf, it's a great place to go. If you need a prop refurbished, I have had good luck. If you need them to work on your engine... Find someone else!!! read more

From the beginning of my interactions with this company they have dropped the ball at every step. They sell used motors saying they have been gone through and work perfectly. Well I got out on the water first time and not only would the engine die on me but the locking mechanism for keeping the motor lowered or lifted was not working either. Took it in for repairs and they didn't fix the mechanism, but told me the motor they sold me had a bad fuel pump. How did they not know that before selling it? Then they did eventually "fix" the mechanism but it still doesn't work. Now they tell me that part isn't covered under my 45 day warranty. So I have to take it somewhere else to get fixed. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND this company to anyone. read more

I took two props in to be repaired it took almost a month to get them back. I had to explain how to get them right and I contacted Acme props to get the specs. I also took them a new prop so they could get it right. I went to pick them and only one was done. I came back the next day and picked up the second one it had hammer marks on the blades I asked and they said it was fine. I told them they needed to fill them and they would not fix it. I have been a certified boat mechanic for 37 years and this is a first. I WON'T EVER GO BACK STAY CLEAR OF A ROCK. read more

Scot at A Rock knows his stuff inside and out. Answered questions about installing a new motor in my boat that no one else could. They do everything on boats and their prices for services are much better. They winterized my boat for $150 where I used to pay $450 at the Malibu dealer and they said it is ready to go in the spring, don't bring it back to summerize it. His daughter and wife and one other young lady work the front desk. They can answer many questions but not all. They can however, get you the answers you need. Ashley J's review is like going to the dentist, and asking the receptionist if you need a cavity filled. A-Rock always has an expert available, you just have to ask, the girls at the counter ring up the products and check to see if your repair is complete. read more

Most of the time they have young girls who know nothing about boats working at the front desk. I think as a woman myself not knowing much about boats, this doesn't help when looking for things or having questions. I've needed spark plugs and other items that they couldn't assist me with. Two of my friends have used them in the recent past and both had a horrible customer service experience. One also purchased a gas can that leaked all over inside of the boat. It was tragic. He took the gas can back and they acted like there was no need to give him his money back. They finally did give his money back but non of us will ever be using this business again. Someone needs to open a great boat repair and part shop in SLC. read more

I was looking for a water pump for an old Chrysler 130 HP outboard motor. I went to several places who were not able to help me and was actually treated very rudely at one place, I then stumbled on A-ROCK where I was greeted by a lady who I swear to god seems to know everything (not sarcastic) who within 1 1/2 minutes had the part sitting right there on the counter in front of me. and had all the information I needed. When I need more boating accessories they are going to be my go-to first place. read more

"Old style" shop, but they definitely know their stuff and have always been straight in estimates, final work in both time & price, AND working w/ me to schedule. Horrible customer service. Boat broke down took over a month to get it into their shop. Had my boat in their shop 3 times. Still never ran right and left us stranded on the lake every time we took it out. Had to be towed in and canceled our plans every time. Last time I took it back to be looked at, it sat for over 2 weeks. I'd call and ask if they looked at it yet, they told me "not yet we'll look at it tomorrow". And then another week goes by still nothing. Finally got tired of waiting for them to "fit" me in and took it to a real boat shop. You should honor the work you did and if you don't fix it right the first time, you should make it a priority to get it in and fix it right. read more
