Sacred Passage Can you imagine having a baby in the middle of times like this? But can you imagine then having a baby with absolutely no blood relatives near? Then top that off with a planned water birth that unfortunately didn't go your direction!?! You're 'advanced age' atl term used for women giving birth past 35. You're black or indigenous, which has the highest death rate for mothers and babies pass during delivery. So you find yourself at the hospital thank goodness with the best care from nurses and doctors because your best friend is a doula and your husband is Nordic from Australia and he is a beast when it comes to looking after his wife and newborn child! So now you're home with still not a family member for miles! You have some friends but they're mostly without children and it's still a pandemic so there isn't much help they can really offer. Still imagine. Now you're home alone with your newborn baby and husband and you're both walking around like a chicken with heads cut off not knowing exactly what's right. 'Are we feeding her alright?' 'Is she too cold?' And the questions fly in! Thank goodness for a postpartum doula! But here you are, still in pain but ignoring it. Deeply confused because your body is doing all sorts of things to recover from baby. This is the part no one talks about. Even though I don't particularly have the best relationship with my mom! I just want my mom. Then comes Tnah! Of Sacred Passages! A beautiful gift my best friend and doula Cynthia bestowed upon me! She insisted I needed Tnah we didn't have the budget! She made it happen! As the new mama our care often gets lost in the shuffle. The bit of help we had from friends was so amazing and great! Our village of girlfriends really came through! Racquel and her family dropping off food! Meline and her sweet sister and daughter dropping off groceries. So grateful! One thing that got left out. Mama's physical and emotional care! My personal care. Tnah showed up like the beautiful Goddess she is and wrapped me up with so much love, fragrances, belly massage and literally wrapped my postpartum belly with a traditional Benkung Belly Bind. And all the goodies she bestowed upon me! I so looked forward to her visits because I knew that while our sweet little baby was sleeping Tnah had me all loved up and looked after. It was quite scary at first bringing home a new baby and not knowing how to really care for my body after! Tnah's 'Mama roasting' helped in an incredible way that simply should be a part of every single new mothers recovery. I am forever so grateful for the fourth trimester love I got from Tnah! I highly recommend her! She is so beautiful, amazing, thoughtful, kind, and any new mom is blessed to have this type of love and care after delivering a baby. I honestly don't know what I would have done without that initial care. She is a true Goddess send. Daily I am grateful for her! I seriously don't even want to imagine my postpartum care without her.

Belly massage and paste was amazing

I had to have a c section for my first baby. I had a hard time with recovery and was very weak in my core. Couple that with this fear I had of touching my c section scar and belly. I heard that belly binding and massage might be good to help recovery so I went about trying to find someone who could help me. I'm so glad I met Tnah, I was so afraid to have my belly massaged but she did such a great job and the massage felt so relaxing and healing. She then put a paste and did belly binding on me. The whole experience with her was relaxing and the the process really helped me get over my fear of my c section scar area. Thank you Tnah for such a wonderful healing experience. I really appreciate it.

Tnah Louise making the wreaths for my daughter and I for my "Sealing of the Bones" ceremony

Tnah is phenomenal. I used her for postpartum services twice. She thoroughly nurtured me after my two home water births. It brought me so much comfort to have her visit and provide me with such nourishing treatments. She is a mother of four herself and understands what it is like to give birth and knows innately what a woman needs postpartum. She made feel so cared for and important. I felt like I was her top priority and "the only client in the world" at all times. It is such a nice feeling as a mom to have someone truly nurture us, because we are usually the ones doing the nurturing. I am so grateful to have had Tnah as part of my postpartum healing process. I especially love the womb rub which provides tremendous relief after birthing at home without pain medication. The sealing of the bones ceremony was so special as it marked the end to my fourth trimester. It was such a profound, nourishing, and magical experience. I chose her "Warming & Nourishing" package which included placenta prana, belly binding w/firming paste for 2 weeks ( 6 visits three per week, every other day) with a choice of a womb rub or thai compress rub each visit (20 minutes sessions), 3 bajo v-steam herbs and preparation, sitz bath herbs- 1 week supply, 2 manteadas (1 per week), a sealing of the bones ceremony and 1 week worth of choice of soups, choice of 3 teas or milks, 1 week of salads and choice of muffins or energy balls. I truly felt I received everything described and so much more. Her soups, teas, milks, salads, muffins and energy balls are made with love and taste delicious. I love that Tnah brings her ceremonial practices into the treatments. It really gives the feeling of added heart, wisdom and culture. I found her services and treatments to be an integral part of my postpartum recovery especially in regaining my shape and inner strength. In addition, she encapsulated my placenta, created a placenta tincture and balm, and made me a beautiful and sentimental dreamcatcher out of my umbilical cord. It was evident that she spent extensive time, thought and heart into creating those beautiful momentos. Tnah truly provides stellar service. I highly recommend her for postpartum care. I will definitely be hiring her again for my next birth. She is truly one of a kind.

My closing of the bones ceremony was just so special. I will never forget the beautiful set up. From the fresh flowers to the music. My daughter joined in and helped create a flower crown headpiece for me, which I wore during my ceremony. The ambiance and ceremony that Tnah creates, is again, pure magic.

It's a beautiful ceremonial bath from @asacredpassage. She gave me the best home spa. I love all her services from her foods, drinks to hot she prepared with herbs, rose petals, butter milk and beautiful bath salt for us. Such a wonderful experience. Thanks to her my postpartum recovery easier. Highly recommend her to all mommies and friends.

I had the most amazing experience with my blessingway ceremony with Tnah. She created a beautiful space full of loving energy for 7 of my close girlfriends and family to get vulnerable and celebrate my passage into motherhood. Her attention to detail was impressive and her ability to facilitate an open, beautiful ceremony full of connection and joyfulness was an experience I will never forget. Highly recommend. Every guest was touched by the experience.

She paces out clients responsibly enough so that we never had to worry whether or not she would have time for us when labor came (and our son was 10 days early) and if she were sick or couldn't be there, she knows all her backup doulas very well and is even starting a collective with them! In the lead up to the birth, Dawn was there to offer any advice we needed, and she gave us extensive instruction on the different ways the day might go. When the birth finally came, we had a number of unexpected scenarios, and Dawn was able to offer an informed perspective on what to expect, as well as what to push for and against at the hospital. She ultimately helped us make a very difficult decision, and if she hadn't been there, we firmly believe we'd still be debating whether it was the correct one. But she was there, and while it wasn't in our initial birth plan, we were happy with the choices made, and we now have a healthy baby boy. In the post-partum period, Dawn was always there to answer questions and offer support. She once again gave well-rounded advice on what to expect, as well as practical tips on dealing with a newborn. We really can't recommend Dawn enough. We've had friends who have had questionable-to-bad experiences with their doula, and that seems like it would be a nightmare in the very moment when you need the most support. She's also funny and generous with her praise, which lifts the spirits on the more exhausting days. It has been such a relief to have someone with so much experience supporting us -- we can ask her advice on anything about the newborn and toddler, and she always has an honest, empathetic answer or suggestion to help us figure out a path forward. And she has endless stories to let you know you're not alone in your anxieties or struggles. Dawn will keep you sane and help your newborn grow into a healthy baby. She's the best!

I want to share my experience to be able to help future mothers and especially first time mothers…read moreto have the best experience possible wether its for birth or postpartum as mine wasn't what I wish It would have been. I wanted to feel supported and try for a VBAC for my second birth so I decided to work with Andrey for the birth of our daughter. Everything went good at the beginning, we had our in person interview, shortly after that meeting we decided we would be a fit for each other. After that she came over one more time and afterwards she told me she had a family oversees she was working with and would be available via phone/zoom and if needed to she would introduce me to a back up doula incase she wasn't back in time for my birth. The way she introduced us was thru text (no phone call or even an effort to do a zoom call so me and that back up doula could meet each other) no professionalism. My prenatal care was very limited nothing close to what Andrey promotes. Then I asked for a list of what to bring in my birth bag, she said she would send, I had to ask about 4 times until she sent and the reason I didn't get it was because she had sent it to a 'Victoria' how do you forget your clients name especially when you are a part of one of the most vulnerable times in their life. Fast forward to my birth Andrey ended up not being there. I ended up working with the back up doula & my first time meeting her and talking to her was her walking in my room while I laid in my bed clothe-less in pain as I was going thru my contractions (not the most ideal setting to meet someone for the first time who is going to be a part of a raw and emotional intimate time) a few days later Andrey lets me know shes back in LA and is coming to see me & baby to help with postpartum care. Then texts me cancelling because her car is in the shop (She could've taken an Uber) and cannot make it and she can come another day. She comes over a couple days after that for a few hours and tells me she will be back @10am the next day to help us some more. The next morning @9:35am she txts me she cannot make it and isn't available until the following week. I had cancelled help from my sitter to help with my newborn and toddler and my husband had left to work because we had relied on having help from Andrey that morning. At that point I was feeling extremely upset. The care and support I was expecting which Andrey advocates heavily on was nowhere close to what I was given. What was supposed to be a time in my life where I should've been given unwavering love and support turned into a time of grief and sadness for me. I decided to have a conversation with Andrey and let her know how I was feeling and I no longer felt comfortable working together. She apologized and told me I was a client that 'fell thru the cracks.' Simply she overcommitted and I was put in the back burner or was her last option sadly. She offered to bring some postpartum stuff to help with grief and overall just to help me emotionally and would drop it off in the next couple days, she never did. Unfortunately Andrey constantly overpromised and underdelivered.

Sara is the ONLY person I could find in the area that has a dedicated workshop that is held to the highest standards of sanitation. While working in my kitchen was an option, I chose to have Sara prepare the capsules in her workshop. After using my capsules for several months, I can honestly say I am incredibly disappointed that I did not do placenta encapsulation with my first 3 children. After hearing about Sara and the amazing results of her work by several mommy friends, I decided to give it a try after my 4th pregnancy. The results were nothing short of magical and I honestly wish I had an endless supply of capsules!! (On that note, Sara does supply you with a tincture as part of her services that actually can be used for years postpartum if cared for properly.) The capsules gave me tons of energy and made me feel hormonally balanced during those first few months postpartum. If you're on the fence about encapsulation, or unsure about who to use, call Sara she'll talk you through it. I'm SO glad I did!!!

I switched to working with Faith about halfway through my pregnancy when I realized I wanted to…read morebirth at a birth center and not the hospital. Faith and her team were so helpful during my appointments, helping me make sure my body and pregnancy stayed healthy. She guided me in improving my nutrition and keeping my blood sugar managed, and she connected me to a maternal fetal medicine provider for extra monitoring since I had an IVF pregnancy. Faith took my birth plan seriously and knew how important it was to me to have a water birth, so when she let me know my labor wasn't progressing enough and told me I needed to transfer to a hospital, I was able to trust her judgement. She remained available over text message for questions as well. Then in our postpartum visits Faith was so kind in hearing me as I processed the birth experience I had in the hospital and how it really wasn't what I had wanted/envisioned. She offered me a rebonding session in the birth room where I could basically redo my golden hour. It was such a healing experience. Faith and her team also helped me with filling for disability and completing that paperwork, which was super important to support me on my maternity leave. I'm grateful for the support and treatment I received at Mind Body Birth.

I'm now almost five months postpartum, and I wanted to wait until I had some distance from my…read morepregnancy and postpartum experience before writing this review. There were parts of my experience with Faith and her team that I genuinely appreciated, as well as parts that were difficult for me and ultimately made my pregnancy more stressful than I had hoped it would be. Earlier in my pregnancy, communication was sometimes a source of stress for me. There were quite a few times when messages I sent through the chat went unanswered. One situation that particularly concerned me happened around Christmas, when I was told that my lab order might not be put in on time. I was supposed to have my progesterone checked every two weeks, and because I had experienced two prior miscarriages, going even a few days beyond that timeframe made me anxious. As my pregnancy progressed, I also struggled with some of the expectations around my care. At one point, I was told I could be put on probation for not consistently attending my chiropractic appointments, despite communicating that I was struggling financially at the time. I was required to see Sarah specifically, rather than having the option to see a chiropractor closer to me who was more affordable. The visits were also expected weekly, even during times when I felt sore afterward and felt that my body needed a break. The financial aspect became increasingly difficult for my family during the middle and later parts of my pregnancy. My insurance at the time did not cover the ultrasounds I was required to receive, so I was paying approximately $600-$900 per ultrasound on top of payments for Faith's care and chiropractic visits. There was also a $12 valet charge each time I came in for an appointment. My husband and I own a business, and we experienced a slowdown during my pregnancy, so these combined expenses became difficult to manage. I do appreciate that Faith offered me a payment plan through Credee, which helped when the costs began piling up. There were other moments when I felt more pressured than supported. I remember feeling stressed about my baby not being head-down by a certain point in pregnancy. I personally felt that my baby still had time to turn and wanted to trust my body, so the concern around it added anxiety for me rather than reassurance. I had a similar experience with recommendations around drinking 15 cups of water per day and taking herbs after some of my lab numbers were one or two points elevated. I'm personally very cautious about taking herbs or medications unless I feel they're necessary, so I declined the herbs. I sometimes felt judged or pressured when I wasn't meeting those recommendations, rather than feeling that my preferences were fully respected. Toward the end of my pregnancy, I unexpectedly learned during an ultrasound at Keck Medicine that my baby was measuring small, and I ultimately needed to transfer my care to a hospital. This was an overwhelming time, and I really appreciated Faith's support during the transfer. She helped calm me down and reminded me that I still had time to choose the hospital where I wanted to deliver and that I still had a say in my care. That helped me feel like I had some control during a situation that changed very quickly. Tahira was also incredibly helpful during this time. She researched different hospitals for me and helped me explore my options, which ultimately allowed me to choose the hospital where I felt most comfortable delivering my baby. My postpartum experience with Faith was much more positive. She came to my home to check on both me and my baby, and I found her much more pleasant and supportive during that period. After feeling like there were so many expectations I needed to meet throughout pregnancy, postpartum felt like a huge relief because I no longer felt that same pressure. I also want to mention Tchala, who was consistently calm, supportive, and pleasant throughout my experience. I really appreciated her demeanor and the way she interacted with me. Overall, I'm grateful for the support I received during some of the most important moments of my pregnancy, particularly during my transfer and postpartum period. At the same time, I wouldn't describe my overall pregnancy experience as the calm and supportive experience I had hoped for. The combination of financial pressure, required appointments, communication issues, and feeling pressured around certain recommendations created additional stress during an already vulnerable time. I'm sharing this because I think experiences with pregnancy and midwifery care can be very personal. Some families may appreciate a more structured approach with clear expectations, while others may prefer more flexibility and autonomy. For me, I would have benefited from more flexibility, responsiveness, and understanding of my individual circumstances and preferences.

Sadly, I cannot speak to Kate's abilities with regard to the birthing process, since she was…read morealready booked for my due date. I am, however, able to discuss her nature, her knowledge, and her dedication. I suffer from a rare condition called hyperemesis gravidarum. It's a condition that had me hospitalized on three occasions, and on bed rest for six months. I lost my job, I was unable to connect with friends and family, I was too sick to speak, and I was on anti-nausea meds that kept me asleep or too groggy to think most of the day. To compound matters, I'm fairly new to LA and didn't have the social resources to help me through that incredibly difficult time. When I finally emerged from the fog, a friend recommended I research doulas for additional support, which is how I found Kate. When reaching out and explaining my situation, other doulas were "all business." Most let me know they were already booked, and explained that I should have researched doulas earlier (thank you for your wisdom). Kate was the exception that took note of my difficult situation and all but rushed to my rescue. While she was already booked for my due date, she reached out to her vast doula community to help me find someone who was a good fit. Because of my condition and the after-effects of being in solitary confinement for six months, my needs are high--and specific. So, helping me find another doula was no small feat. Kate also set me up with a slew of other resources to help me manage the mental and physical stress I had been going through. She also welcomed me into her new mom community, which seems to be exclusively made up of kind, cool, welcoming women. Kate has been nothing short of a Godsend to me. It's hard to express in a Yelp review just how desperate I was to feel supported. Somehow, in my six sentence inquiry email that was overlooked by a handful of other doulas, Kate saw through the fog and saw a woman in need. I am eternally grateful to her and anyone would be lucky to have her on their side.

I wasn't sure I was going to have a Doula the second time around. I felt that my husband and I already had a pretty solid birth partnership and because it was going to be a home birth we'd have lots of constant support from our midwife and her assistant. When we decided we wanted the extra love/care, we knew Kate should be that person. Perhaps what stands out most in my memory of Kate on that day is how she seemed to know exactly what was needed in each given moment. As a Doula myself, I'm aware that each birth is unique as is every couple and family. Sometimes a Doula needs to be very hands on, and sometimes not as much - more as a supportive presence in the room from a distance. Kate just totally took our cues and because of my husband and my relationship, because we'd done this before and because it was a shorter and easier labor...we did a lot of it on our own. But in the moments I needed Kate and didn't even know it, I'd look over and there she was - whispering the most perfect motivating and inspirational words in my ear, or massaging my neck and shoulders with lavender oil. I feel honored to have Kate in my life. It is clear that supporting new families is her true calling, and I can say from experience that any couple considering using her services will most definitely have a more peaceful and positive prenatal, birth and/or postpartum experience with Kate by their side.
