We had the steak sandwich and the tuna sandwich as well as the caldo verde - soup was lacking any flavor, the tuna was over cooked and so covered in sesame seeds you couldn't taste the fish, and steak sandwich was so tough I literally had to bite and pull it apart with my fingers just to get a bite. Overall one of the better restaurants I've been to on the island. The wait is usually pretty long, it's a popular location. Overall I'd recommend the garlic sweet bread, avocado salad, and pork belly. The various fishes were decent too. The desserts were not my style, very dense and very sweet. This was the one place that I knew I needed to try while in the Açores, and it certainly did not disappoint. Do I think they made us wait a little longer for a table and for service than some of the locals? Sure, but it was still relatively quick considering the crowd of people formed outside by the time we finished our meal. Given the hype, it probably wasn't the best meal we had in Portugal, or even just the Acores for that matter, but absolutely in the top 3. I wish they had the octopus as I've heard great things, but they had run out that evening as they apparently do fairly often. The choriço, though, was hands down the best I have ever had, AND the best that I had over the next 2 weeks in Portugal. And I had many many choriço both before and during my trip. Such an intense smokey flavor, like it was flambéed over a nice whiskey or a bourbon. Delicious and fun to watch burn at your table. The shrimp in butter and garlic was delicious as well, but there was not much to it besides shrimp and a garlicky butter sauce. A nice little appetizer with their bread and Sao Jorge cheese for dipping. The kale soup was delicious as well. Usually I have this with big chunks of kale and potato, but learned on my trip that blending is the way to go. read more

We were on a cruise ship and decided to go there for lunch. As we were early ( around noon) and it is early April, we didn't have to wait. We were prepared for slow service but found that the service was attentive. The house white wine was very good. I had the chicken with a bean salad and real French fries. The chicken was crunchy and fell off the bone. My husband ordered the flaming sausage. It was prepared well but much different than what we're used to. The menu is in Portuguese and English. The tables are close together and we struck up a conversation with the couple next to us. It was a very enjoyable lunch and next time we're here, we will return! read more

Nice little place with friendly staff and relatively quick service (according to Azores standard). One thing to note is that this place only has ceiling fans (no AC), so can get very hot especially when it's crowded. For appetizers, we had the blood sausage, breaded octopus and tuna carpaccio; recommend tuna carpaccio, fresh and light. The other two were pretty average. For main, we ordered the grilled fish for two, catch of the day. This was pretty good, fresh and very nice portion. Five stars for the friendly waiters, but took a star away because I was hot, to a point where the cold beverage wasn't helping; guess I'm very much an AC girl. Attempted to eat here a year ago during my last vacation but was unable to get in. This time, after waiting 15 minutes for the hostess and 5 minutes for a table, I was able to snag a spot. This is definitely a favorite spot with the locals because it is always busy. They have a decent menu variety and an extensive wine and drink menu. I have made it my mission to try the lapas in as many different restaurants as possible. This is in the top 3 for bigger sized limpets. The flavoring of garlic butter and lemon were pretty good. I also ordered a beefsteak sandwich to go because I knew I couldn't finish my food and my jar of wine. I opted not to get the fries it comes with but added mayo and lettuce. I had a few bites before heading back to the hotel. Despite being busy, the food came out very quickly. However, the service wasn't as quick or attentive. This is hands down the best meal I've had during our stay on Sao Miguel. Due to its popularity, we actually came here on two separate occasions and waited about an hour the second time we were here before we finally got a table. Nonetheless, the food did not disappoint! We tried the grilled ahi tuna steak with sesame seed crust, the grilled octopus, and the limpets. All were delicious! Both the ahi tuna and the octopus were cooked perfectly. The food was delicious! We had a large group of 7 and shared a lot of dishes! Some of the stand outs were the octopus appetizer, the pork belly, and the red sangria. I would recommended going if you are in the area, however, expect a wait. We went around 6PM and were told the wait would be 45 minutes. They only have 2 tables that can seat 7 guests, so we were prepared to wait. They allow you to grab drinks at the bar and sit outside while waiting, which is very nice. I deducted a star because the wait was actually over 90 minutes for our party. I know they can't predict how long a table is going to take to get their food, but they ended up seating a party of 8 who arrived after us at the larger table, making us wait even longer for the table that would only seat 7. read more

The shrimp dish and dessert were good but the main dish was a bit inedible, too salty and bitter and too much ?vinegar or wine. Not the kind of sauce that you expect when you read stew, where I'm expecting savory instead of bitter and salty. The sauce overwhelmed the octopus. It was recommended by our local tour guide and we loved it so much that we came again the next day. We went for an early dinner so there was no wait thankfully. If you go closer to 7pm there's a short line out the door. Everything tasted so flavorful and was well-prepared. A Tasca was highly recommended from my research. My experience was a bit mixed though. It's located right in the middle of Ponta Delgada, and there were a lot of people waiting for a table. After about a 45-minute wait, we got a table for 4. Right from the start, service was kind of lacking. It took around 20 minutes just to get menus, and another 25 before we could place our order. The server read the specials to the table next to us but completely skipped us. They even forgot our soups until we reminded them. The food itself was really good. The limpets were def my favorite. I'd never had them before, and they were amazing. I always wanted to try the Alheira and finally got a chance. They had an interesting texture, but I still enjoyed it. Looked like pork sausages but tasted like other meats. It was also much softer than I was expecting. The rest of the dishes were great too. I liked the vibe of the place. Came in for dinner in April and had an amazing time! We showed up around 7 and waited about an hour for a table for two, which was completely fine as we were chit chatting with other folks waiting and were able to buy a bottle of wine to have while we waited. The restaurant is a warm and welcoming space and the service is incredible. Brenno was our server and was so helpful and fun. The food was good. We shared a few plates at Brenno's recommendation and ended with a digestif and an interesting cake (I wish I could remember what it was!). Dined here on the first stop of a walking food tour with Hungry Whales Tour group. Solid spot with some good to very good wine and good food. We tried a squid salad in an oil base that was quite delicious and served with bread. Next dish was a delicious sauage with a fun flambe at the table. Served with a side of yams. One member of the party was pescatarian, so they subbed a dish that I believe was called Acorda de Camaro. I was the only one that kind of enjoyed it. We had the most delicious meals all over the place on São Miguel island. This was our last stop before flying out. The food was affordable, but terribly underwhelming. Not at all what we were used to on the island. I have to say that the Acoreans know how to cook their seafood. I couldn't say the same at this place. The "jumbo shrimp" we ordered were shelled, headless, sitting on butter and garlic goo, and our fish stew was more like French onion soup- we ate more onion than fish. A generous pour of very easy priced local wine though- thank you. There were so many fish and seafood highlights on this island ! Take advantage! Unfortunately, our experience of Tasca was not favourable. Maybe we should have ordered the tuna as everyone has said. Oh well. read more

Geez I seriously thought this was going to be a 5-star review before arriving. Had a lot of locals highly recommend this place, particularly for its seafood. The restaurant is VERY intimate - it's a small space with tables closely situated to each other. Expect to accidently bump into Grandpa Juarez on your trip to the bathroom. The service was great although slow, but this is expected in this part of the world. Regarding food, I got the ahi tuna, crab cake, and assorted sausage platter. The food was honestly quite unspectacular. Don't get me wrong, the quality of the seafood was excellent - super fresh. But there was nothing special about. Nothing to separate this place from the 100s of other seafood restaurants out there. No distinct flavors, seasonings, or sauces. It was just "good food" that clearly is not memorable. I probably won't return considering there are SO MANY other delicious restaurants on the island. But definitely worth a try. read more

Employees here are very nice and hospitable. This place has a very long line just about every night that they are open. I stopped in here to have the high quality chourico and sweet potatoes. My flight got diverted that was en route to Funchal due to the high winds on the island. We ended up landing in Ponta Delgada and were there for the night. We heard good things about this place from the internet and locals and decided to try it. The space was very traditional and had a great atmosphere. Great staff, most of whom spoke English and were very attentive. The food was brilliant and much better than the Portuguese food I can get in the New York area. We were looking forward to fresh fish in Ponta Delgada in the Azores. We ordered the grilled fish of the day, which was dorado. It came with boiled potatoes and a cooked cabbage/onion slaw. They provided vinegar and olive oil and salt for flavorings. Surprisingly, the vinegar did help enhance the flavor of the fish which was crispy skinned on the outside and flaky inside. First time fish tasted like chicken, because it was so fresh! No fishy taste, not even the skin. The other dish that I was looking forward to was the limpets or lapas in Portuguese. Did not expect it to have the tough chewy texture of calamari but taste like a clam. I tried it once, and don't need to do it again. And for dessert, we had a steak sandwich or bifana no pao. The bread was soft and spongy and delicious like a ciabatta bread. It came with mayo and mustard. Overall, good quality simply cooked food at a good price. Bathrooms were clean. read more

Don't bother! When we checked in we were told 20-30 min wait (they don't take reservations). After waiting for over an hour and a half we asked how much longer we should expect to wait, the hostess, who couldn't have been ruder, just shrugged her shoulders. Then only minutes later while one of our group went to the bar to order another round of drinks while we waited, the same hostess attempted to take their empty chair and give it to someone else. That was the final straw, we left, no way the food could be worth this kind of inhospitable attitude. Collard greens soup: I hated the sausage aftertaste. Also thought the soup would have more substance to it. Limpets: big pieces and seasoned well with garlic and lemon, but the shells weren't cleaned well. We tasted sand over and over. Sirloin steak: thick piece and big portion, but so hard to chew it gave my friend jaw pain. I am glad I didn't get this, because one bite took so long to process and it wasn't enjoyable. Octopus: I thought the actual octopus was overcooked. I hated the ham pieces on the bottom. And I thought the sauce was so overly salty. But I quite liked the scoop of the mashed potato and wish I had more of that instead of the regular potatoes. They're so much of a tourist trap I wasn't sure what to expect. They're admirably efficient with the waitlist, a little less efficient with taking your order (maybe short staffed?), the seafood menu and today's catch are concisely explained. Was not a fan of the octopus appetizer, ended up mushy. But the dobrada was delicious-- totally hit the spot, especially with a little extra bread (EUR 1.5 extra or something) to wipe up the dregs of the bowl. Those who are not a fan of tripe may wish to try something else, but I was out of stomach space! On our last night of vacation, my friend and I were looking for a good restaurant for dinner. One of the chefs at a neighboring restaurant suggested A Tasca, so we decided to check it out. So let's start with the good. The decor and ambiance of this place is great. It has an old-world, rustic feel to it with its wood-beam ceilings and wine bottle decor. The crowd was mixed, but mostly families and small groups of travelers, many English-speaking. The place was lively, but not too noisy for conversation. The waitstaff were all very warm and friendly. And finally, and maybe most importantly, the house wines (red, white, and green!) were cheap and delicious. Unfortunately, our meal wasn't as impressive. For starters, we had the collard green soup and the Lapas Grelhadas (grilled limpets). The soup was tasty, but lacking substance; it was little more than broth with a few tiny pieces of greens and meat. The limpets had generous amounts of garlic and butter, but were not purged well and had tons of sand in it. For my entree, I had the Bife de Vazia Novilho (sirloin steak), which turned out to be, hands down, the absolute toughest piece of meat I've ever had (TWSS). The impressive amount of connective tissue in the steak made it feel like I was cutting through a bundle of rubber bands! Either they need to find a new meat supplier, or do a better job of tenderizing their steaks... either way, dinner shouldn't be a jaw workout. read more

I didn't mind waiting for an hour and I typically don't mind eating on the street/outside, especially when indoor seating is limited but after waiting for an hour and with 2 tables available inside, they took us to what looked like an alleyway with plastic tables and chairs under the guise of "it's cooler outside." I kindly refused the table and asked to be sat inside then to my surprise, it actually wasn't that much hotter inside - it was a cool day. When it was time to order, I mentioned that I like dry red wines and would love to try some wine from the region and he even suggested a bottle from Pico, given the two I wanted were not available... it turned out to be the worst mouthful of regret I have ever experienced and he said "well, if that's what you like then you shouldn't have red wines from here because they are young." He could have told me that at the beginning but to his credit, he brought me 2 others to try and I settled for a glass of one of them, more for his efforts tbh... Maybe I just got unlucky but I do not recommend any of the regional red wines from the region offered at this restaurant. For food, the breaded octopus was oddly soft though the onion chutney it came with was great and the fish (of the day) could have been made by anyone but the Acorda de Camaro (Portuguese bread, egg and shrimp dish) and the salad that came with the fish were absolutely delicious. I would order that salad as a side if I could and definitely recommend the bread dish. The only reason I'm not given this a 1 star is because of price point, our total for 2 appetizers, a main dish, a bottle of wine and 2 glasses of another came down to under €60. However, given the hour wait and reputation of the restaurant, I expected so much more on every level. Maybe I was just unlucky but based on my experience, I wouldn't recommend going to A Tasca. read more
