    Fried trigger fish
    Kristy K.

Dined at Gastronomo on a recent trip to Sao Miguel with my brother and sister. Really lovely place with really lovely staff. They take you over to the fish case and explain the fish to everyone and what all the specials are. We had the tuna and fried trigger fish. Amazing flavors, freshness and tenderness. Some of the best tuna I've had. Highly recommend.

100% best restaurant in Sao Miguel during our visit!!! The tuna special was amazing - it came with 3 types of potatoes as well, which are so yummy dipped in the Tuna sauce. Love the fried triggerfish fillet as well! The staff here are also so helpful and kind - they and the food made the wait 100% worth it! Would come back for my next visit!

The food and the service were outstanding. I recommend the tuna and a local white wine. Ask Sonia.

Experience an excellent place to have dinner with a professional staff. First class food served with care and bursting with local flavor in a lovely atmosphere. We ate there twice during our vacation and we look forward to the next opportunity to dine with Sonia and Chef Goncalo.

Perfection from beginning to end. This is a 10 star establishment!!! Our host welcomed us warmly, advised on the best and most fresh options, and served us some of the best fish we've ever had. The specials rotate so it's impossible to recommend a dish. Stop by and then walk up the road and have dessert at the pineapple plantação. The host hugged us goodbye. We felt like family

Dined here our first evening and it was a lovely way to start. Comfortable and host/owner, Sonia and her son were awesome. Limpets were super good and the best we had on this trip. Fish was very fresh and perfectly prpared. Wine selection is somewhat limited yet ample. What!? That is to say, you'll find some great wines but they appear to be random and rotate in and out. Could not recommend more highly and you definitely want to make reservations. But, try to walk up if you don't have them!

    Fresh catch of the day

This place came highly recommend by a local and it did not fail to impress. Sonya is the best host and she makes sure to walk you through the fresh catch of the day. The fish was so fresh and cooked to perfection with local vegetables. I would highly recommend this local gem.

Sonia is a lovely host and the meal was excellent! But even more impressive was the time spent to show off the beautiful "catch of the day" with thorough explanation of how the fish was to be prepared! DeLisa

Service was good, ordered the usual local fresh cheese, chef's garlic shrimps, and the grilled limpets. All the appetizers was pretty good, but not the best we've had so far on the island. For the entrees we ordered the traditional tripe, seafood rice and the grilled tuna. The tuna was tender and melted in your mouth, the tripe and seafood rice were bextremely salty. It was just too difficult to eat. Our fingers was swelling up just after a few bites and couldn't get enough water. But the is not a uncommon issue. Any of the "stewed" traditional dishes are super salty in most of the restaurants. I felt like I was a big piece of salted cod after how much salt was ingested from the entrees.

This place looks super cool, but I would recommend trying another place in the general area. I'm…read morenot sure if it was because the holiday (New Years) had just passed, but the meal started with a list of what was NOT available which was more than a quarter of the menu -- which also included no white wine by the glass and no beer. The white sangria pitcher was almost too bitter to drink. The croquettes were a tasty starter -- but the cheese wrapped in filo dough was a non-starter. The beet risotto was pleasant but not necessarily memorable. The Hot Cold dessert was a big disappointment. It has beautiful presentation, but we could not finish even the small dessert. Our service was less than ideal. The restaurant was not full, yet you could see their intense stress levels. With the high quality of dinners we'd had for similar and even lower price in the area, we really expected a lot more.

A quick dip in soy sauce, and it was exploding with flavor. It's the best seared tuna we've ever had. I got the octopus legs, which was the BEST octopus I've ever had. And this is coming from someone who immediately orders octopus as soon as she sees it on the menu. I had octopus four times in a week in the Azores, and this was the best. I don't know what they do to the octopus to make it so tender, but it melts in your mouth like butter, and the ends of the tentacles are crispy perfection. Even the side dishes are good here! My octopus came with perfectly cooked and savory potatoes and Brussels sprouts, as well as a small fresh salad. My husband's tuna came with a broccoli steak and the same perfect potatoes. I know I use perfect a lot in this review, but that's all I could say about this food. It was executed that well. My only complaint would be that there is a slight smell of something like bleach throughout the restaurant. You get used to it, but it was off-putting at first. Note that you will definitely need to make a reservation in order to get a table. If I recall, I was able to make one through Facebook a week in advance pretty easily. You can't miss a dinner here while I'm Ponta Delgada.
