I wanted to share my experience at O Pescador in Rabo de Peixe, São Miguel, Azores, so other visitors can make informed decisions. From the moment we arrived, we received a great deal of attention and exceptional service. The owner recommended the fish dishes, and based on that recommendation, we each ordered one. When the bill arrived, we were shocked to see that we had been charged €40 per fish dish. The owner, who had been very attentive throughout the meal, disappeared when it was time to pay, leaving us with no opportunity to ask questions about the charges. My family has deep roots in São Miguel, and because we spent an entire month on the island, we had the opportunity to dine at many restaurants, including several that were much more upscale than O Pescador. After sharing our experience with local residents and staff at other restaurants, every person we spoke with told us that comparable fish dishes would typically cost no more than about €18 each. They all expressed surprise at what we had been charged. What made the experience even more disappointing is that the owners are from the United States. As fellow Americans, I couldn't help but wonder whether they assumed we wouldn't question the €40 price because those prices are more common in some U.S. restaurants. I have no way of knowing if that was the case, but it certainly crossed my mind after learning what the typical local prices are. I understand that restaurant prices can vary, but the difference between what we paid and what we were consistently told was the normal price was significant. It left us feeling taken advantage of and put a damper on an otherwise wonderful month in São Miguel. My advice to anyone dining there is to ask the price of any fish or daily specials before ordering if the price isn't clearly listed on the menu, even if the dish is recommended by the owner. A wonderful restaurant in Rabo de Peixe. We had some of the best seafood of our trip here, as well as the best dessert! We had such a great time the first night we went back again the next. The staff was wonderful, kind, professional, and attentive. We got to meet the lead chef - and then ran into them on our return flight to the US & they remembered us! We stopped for a late lunch. There were only 2 others eating. We were interested in the fresh fish and our server took us up to the display and explained all the options. We decided on the Parrot Fish (grilled) and it was superb! Lightly seasoned and perfectly cooked. The meal comes with olives and bread and this amazing olive oil (garlic, Parmesan, paprika) for dipping. We also tried the fried validation and it was really good. This place was so delicious and I strongly suggest you make the drive to come here and experience the freshest homemade seafood dishes the island has to offer. The service is friendly and they speak English and Portuguese, and there are two menu translations. The atmosphere is cute and clean, and the food is affordable. There are so many delicious options to choose from it is hard to pick. We had the seafood stew for 2 (cataplana) and it was huge! It could have fed a whole family. It was accompanied by bread which we happily dunked into the broth. Well worth the wait and our bellies were so happy. Great for travelers, locals, or families. Bottom line this place is a gem. So happy we stumbled upon it, will definitely be back one more time to try the fried octopus which is their specialty. Bookmarked this restaurant as a must try while in the island after reading the recommendations. Restaurant was not to appealing by the surroundings. Very unkept part of the area no fault to the business but by the residence in the area. Felt like a harbor ghetto. Service was really good, and since our mission was to find the best of the dishes we enjoy, we had the basics and a few new dishes to try. Started with the fresh cheese and the grilled lapas along with the garlic shrimps, The cheese is similar to all the other restaurants so far. The garlic shrimps was good sized shrimps and flavorful, the lapas was the biggest disappointment on the whole trip. It was the tiniest lapas we've ever seen to date. I could believe the served them. I think they were too small to be harvested. They were all a bit smaller than my thumb nail. For entrees, we selected the tuna steak, fried octopus and the fish stew. The entrees was good and the seafood stew was large because I ordered the for 2 portion. The actual chef was not in the night we when in but the owner took the helms and cooked our meal. We ended our vacation in the Azores with a dinner here, and it was possibly the best meal from our entire trip. The proportions were massive, the server was so sweet and the manager/chef was so friendly. The decor had a nautical theme (makes sense given the name). We ordered the Squid ink pasta and the Cod on the Portuguese tile, both were delicious, with extremely fresh seafood, and overall were just comforting dishes. The experience was so authentic. We couldn't have been happier with our last meal and would recommend this place to anyone! read more

On a private guided tour of the Azores, we were taken to a hidden gem that exceeded all of my expectations. Being Portuguese, I knew the hospitality and ambiance would be above par and the food would not disappoint. What I didn't expect was that it would go beyond all of my wildest expectations. The owner was exceptional and made us feel at home. The service was second to none. Now for the food. We were a party of eight with appetizers, cheese boards, alcohol, and meals. Not a crumb was left. The fish was fresh, the meats were beyond tender and they definitely know why a medium rare steak looks like. The sangria was unlike any I have ever had. I highly recommend you don't leave without trying at least a glass (but good luck with that one). Only disappointing thing about this experience is that it's over. DEFINITELY A MUST TRY. We wanted an authentic Azores seafood dinner and we found it here! The owner helped us select the appetizers and main courses. She educated us about the characteristics of the various fish on the menu. Talk about service! She explained how she meets the incoming boats each morning to buy her fish. Wow what a lucky find! We had a great fresh fish (actually a ray) that was cooked perfectly and accompanied by garlic, butter, potatoes, sweet potato, and a modest salad of lettuce and tomato. We just walked in, saw the cold case with the day's catch, and picked our fish before we even sat down. There's parking right in front. We were there at 6:30 on a Saturday night and were the first customers (others came in later but as of 8pm there were still plenty of tables). The restaurant is run by one man and the wait is never ending. We ordered a started which never arrived. The owner forgot about it, we realized later. After a two-hour wait my main arrived -- but it was not what I had ordered. On top of that, the the main didn't even include the potatoes which were supposed to com with every main. The guy didn't even apologize, he didn't really give a fig. I said I would eat whatever he had brought me but when the owner realized I was not overly enthusiastic about it it took the plate away without even asking. Quite a rude behavior. So I decided to end my dinner like that as I didn't want to have to wait any longer. Eventually, the owner even charged me for the sitting.
