Holy cannoli! This place was maaaaaaassive, more than I ever expected! There's a small little store front near the budget truck rental, but then you go through a door and you're in a giant warehouse with furniture stacked up to the ceiling! I couldn't believe it! I really enjoyed perusing, but a lot of the pieces I liked either had some damage to them, or were pricier than comparable pieces I've seen at other stores or resale outlets. This store has wonderful vintage and antique items, and caring people work there. You can find everything from office furniture to a one-of-a-kind 1940s lamp. While I was there, the owner Rose demonstrated an antique phonograph that used wax cylinders. My group had 3 people with different interests, and she shared insights about every item we asked about. Rose's enthusiasm and kindness were a highlight of my visit to Chicago. I recommend this store to anyone. It's well worth the visit. read more

This is my absolute favorite vintage shop!!! I've been a customer for years and my home is filled with one of a kind treasures from Rose's shop. She has an incredible eye for all types of things. I've purchased lamps, chairs, glassware, dishes, vases, outdoor furniture, porcelain and more!! The prices are unbelievably reasonable. Whenever I need furniture, this is my first stop in the city. I went in a couple of weeks ago looking for some furniture for a friend in need who was moving into an unfinished attic. I needed a big rug to set a foundation for decorating (also to cover rough subflooring) but I also needed a nightstand and some lighting. Rose personally took me around and gave me a truly fantastic deal on the things I needed. The warehouse is always overfull with treasures and I love coming in and seeing their current stock. Also, they offer delivery for an added fee and have even brought things up to my third-floor apartment. Seriously, don't sleep on this place. I visited with my 3 year old- daughter after a morning music class. What a great decision! Rose was so sweet to my daughter, helping her pet/play with the dogs, and was very attentive as we looked around. We stayed for 2+hours, and still haven't come close to seeing all that is there. Owner was very warm and inviting and even gave me a frame for free when I told her I framed dishtowels and dishrags as a hobby.

I've purchased three furniture pieces and one home decor item over three years. I've probably visited three more times and left empty handed. It is always a good time to peruse the warehouse and admire things for which I don't have space. This place is fun because of the exploration. You've got to look, dig and manuever, and there's such a wide variety in style, quality, and yes, condition of the items that you never know what you'll find. Everything is sold in as-is condition... This is not an Emily Gilmore antique shop with flawless items. Rose knows the condition of her stock and prices accordingly, so don't expect to haggle. I've purchased cheaper, broken items and had fun researching and rehabbing them, and I've also purchased pricier things in good condition. On a personal note, I have always been pleasant to Rose, and she responds in kind, as one would expect. She is a fun conversationalist with great tips on everything from glass shops to sewing classes. I even flubbed a pickup of a large item, and Rose understood my scheduling issues and offered a solution that thankfully didn't require me to take time off work. Give this place some business if you need furniture/home goods! They're currently offering 20% off on everything in their warehouse because they're running out of space (which tells you how many options they have because there's a LOT of space) and everything is reasonably priced for the most part. They helped my partner and I load a dresser, bookcase, and coffee table into our car and held the bookcase for us so we could make multiple trips. Lots of cool stuff in there especially if you take the time to dig in. The warehouse is also well organized so it's not tough to find what you're looking for. They look closed from the front but they're not! The door is on the right side of the building since they share a space with a truck rental company. read more

You can get many things at a comparable price to what you would get anywhere else, only the things you will get here are higher quality. This place has a huge warehouse with 50ish nice couches of many styles, just as many dressers, desks, and chairs. This is an antique furniture store. Rose writes on tags about the pieces she has. Notes are informative, telling of origin from the 19th century in some cases. The stuff here is really nice. Rose is great too. Talk to her, she loves to chat. Talk to Eddy--so does he. Everyone else who works here is equally as friendly. I stopped by one day and went back the next with my girlfriend. We bought a plant pot. Rose bagged it for me in an old Dominicks grocery bag. I decided I would frame that grocery bag and give it as a gift to a lamenting Dominicks lover. I went back to pick out a frame. Rose helped me find the perfect frame. Eddy took out his pliers, hammer, and box cutter to help me take the frame apart and put in the new grocery bag. Rose found me two more Dominicks paper gorcery bags and gave me those while Eddy was working on the frame. Rose ended up giving me a huge discount and the gift looks amazing. She even sent me home with framing tape. They really take care of you at "A World Through Rose Colored Glasses". They are so friendly you can tell that everyone loves working together there. When I retire, maybe I'll apply for a job. Even if you're not interested in making a purchase, I recommend taking a trip to the shop. This place is a classic Chicago gem. It's also a "Budget" van rental, so if you need to transport any furniture you buy, the means to do so are readily available. I found this place by complete accident. I was returning a rented truck at the attached Ryder office, and dozens of unique items from this secondhand store were scattered throughout the office. Statues, furniture, home good, even full-size ornate Bavarian thrones, lots of unique things to look at. I asked about it, and the owner said something like "oh this is nothing, come with me." She brought me into the store proper and I saw wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling furniture, art, all kinds of things, in this warehouse. I dont have a car, but the owner said they have people who can transport and move purchases for a few, which I thought was reasonable. Lots of unique, mostly older stuff, that definitely has character. I'll be back! read more

When I first stumbled upon AWTRCG I was amazed at how unique her selection of vintage/used furniture was. After visiting a few times Rose got to know my love for mid-century design and offered to take my information to call me if she got anything in she'd think I'd like. Many places offer this to their customers but rarely do they call. She called me back! I was so happy to hear about the new pieces she'd received and I could not believe the amazing service she provided me with. Not only did she help me find a buffet I was looking for I also left with a new coffee table. After knowing how much Rose cares about her customers I knew I found my new favorite place to visit for vintage furniture and accessories. The owner, Rose, is kind, attentive, and very helpful! I almost don't want to write this review because I'll be letting one of the best-kept secrets in Chicago out of the bag :) From most of the other reviews I read, I also stumbled upon this place completely by accident. My dad and I were picking up a box truck we were renting from the Budget Rental counter that's shares the same store front as A World Through Rose Colored Glasses. Being the Antique Freak that I am, I start to look around at all of the amazing treasures around the store - and then I realized that there's a FULL WAREHOUSE of furniture and various other items in the back. If you want/need unique and beautiful OPTIONS, this is definitely THE place. My favorite part about this place is that my dad isn't one to drool over vintage decor or design - far from it. BUT - 4 watercolor paintings caught his eye almost immediately when we walked in. I promised him I'd buy him the set of 4 sometime soon when I'd have more time to come back and scope everything out. After looking up the history behind these paintings we find out that they were done using an Oriental Watercolor technique by an Iranian artist in Tehran. They're signed and dated 1943. The artist opened a house/studio in the early 1940's and named it "Demon" (pronounced: DAY-mon) after a professor he respected. Around 1947 - 1949 and into the 50's, the artist built up a following of other artists who needed space to create their art and the House/Studio of Demon became more well-known in the city of Tehran during that time (most, if not, all practiced the same watercolor technique). The fact that these 4 unique paintings that caught my dad's attention are all signed and dated "1943" means that the original founder of the Studio/House was likely the artist of these beautiful views into history. Needless to say, I snatched up the 4 paintings the last time I was in the store and I have a perfect "just-because-gift" gift for my father (*Also, the set had been discounted REALLY nicely when I went back...so even more of a win)! Bottom line - this place is a gold mine! But, you do have to know quite a bit about what you're looking for - at the very least the style or aesthetic you're looking for - in order to have a successful experience at the store. There is A LOT of inventory - which is a DREAM! However, it could be overwhelming to some. I would recommend doing a bit of research on what you're looking for - or what type of item(s) you're looking for before you arrive and scan the warehouse entirely to see if you can find it (my guess is that you probably will :)). read more

I have nothing but wonderful things to say about this place. The owner Rose, has been a wonderful part of the community of small businesses in her neighborhood. She was a huge supporter to the nonprofit, the Rebuilding Exchange (around the corner) when I was a Director there. She was open and welcoming to our diverse staff. My boyfriend and I have furnished most of our house from her furniture. She has always given us a fair price and she has a great collection of vintage pieces. Her staff is kind and helpful and always willing to help load up the furniture. They are a great sustainable business to support and make great efforts to find a new home for older pieces so that they do not end up in the landfill. Rose also has a great eye for spiffing up pieces that are rough around the edges. I was shocked by the negative review below. Rose and her staff have never exhibited racist or homophobic behavior to any of the rainbow of people I have sent in there. Her staff is incredibly diverse and her support of RX and the Job Training Program that helps find jobs for formerly incarcerated individuals can speak volumes against these accusations. This is a great place to shop. Huge selection and some interesting items- things you might not find anywhere else. I'm mystified by any negative comments. My wife and I have shopped here more than once and always been treated with courtesy and helpfulness by proprietor and employees. If we were "followed around the store" it was to be attentive, chat, and to help us find what we were looking for. This is an interesting place, just 'average' for a used place. I found it when responding to an ad on Craigslist for a really nice looking couch. I knew the address was pretty much an industrial area, so I send a message asking if it was a storage place. I found out it is attached to the truck rental business. They had a tremendous amount of 'things' there but the couch I was interested in was gone. Furniture, etc., literally piled levels high in a warehouse. Not much is really priced and it seemed if you happened to be there on a Friday no one would be able to help you since they are all busy with truck rentals. It is interesting enough to stop every so often but to find one specific thing might be difficult. Don't go on a Friday or at the end of a month. The warehouse also has that that 'smell' common to resale places. I don't know how easy or hard it would be to get that out of anything. read more

There is actually a really good selection of different kinds of things here. Most of the staff is really helpful and friendly. However the owner, who makes all of the negotiating decisions and whose cell phone is reached when you call the business number (?) just changed the price on an item that I saw in person twice priced differently (raised $70?). She also yelled at me over the phone for several minutes and argued about how long I had been considering buying the item in the first place. Even asking if it was all in my head? It was a very bizarre exchange for me being a customer trying to buy a product. Everyone else who helped me when I've been there in the past has been great, but Rose just made me not want to go back. read more

Love this place I heard about this place from one of my clients that they had a lot of fun and beautiful vintage things. I found the most adorable pink vintage love seat ever for a very nice price . I called and left a message and Ashley called me back very quickly . I came right over to pay and she was so helpful and friendly . I didn't have any help until the next day to pick my love seat since I do not own a truck. When we arrived Ashley and Rose help me pack my chair so it wouldn't get damaged in my friends truck . They have a large amount of inventory at great prices. We just bought a couple of really cool vintage lamps that are fabulous additions to our home. It's always fun to look through their huge warehouse. My experience is that most other stores in Chicago either have far less selection and/or much higher prices. This hidden emporium of past treasures is resided over by Rose herself, along with her erstwhile partner, Dennis. My wife and I met Rose and her world through her donating to the homeless shelter my wife volunteers with, and Rose's gifts - offered on birthdays - have made a huge difference to many homeless clients of the shelter. So my initial encounter with Rose was "merely" to pick up some restaurant coupons she'd kindly purchased for the homeless. Once inside, however, I discovered her business. Now true confessions... my wife and I love old things, the sort of things you might find at a really good garage sale or maybe an estate sale run by folks who are (price-wise) more than reasonable. Well, Rose - along with her furniture which is a whole world unto itself - also has all sorts of the kind of treasures a traveler through American memorabilia might dream of perusing. If you are looking for the perfect French Flea Market find, this is your place! It's full of unique items that are ready to be re-vamped. The store will even offer to do the painting/reupholstering for you.There were some great chairs, dressers and unique finds. This place has many interesting items which caught my eye. So, I decided to take a look around. Rough part of this place is the nasty Oder. This place needs a good clean up. There are dogs in this place and there are guys caring heavy items around and it just seemed unsafe for the dogs but also for the workers. Mind you, I love dogs and have 2 of my own. I did not like the service there. I wont ever go back. I surely wont recommend this place to anyone. Note to the owner: Clean up the bad Oder your place stinks like mildew and crap. read more
