A1 Upland Smog Check is definitely the most ethical, efficient and affordable Smog Check business in the area. I did my research and looked into a few smog check businesses and this place has the most competitive pricing. Other businesses quoted me $10-30 more for the same service. Also A1 has a Pass or Don't Pay policy, which is rare in the industry. They usually charge you either way, which is fine because they put in the time and work. This shows that they are a very genuine business. The business is located down a narrow area of other mechanic shops of different specialties. I called before I came since it was the Friday after Thanksgiving, and I wanted to make sure they were open before I came out. Andrew answered and he told me he was open. I headed right over and there was no wait! Yay! The business has their State of CA Star Certified Smog Check Station sign at the front. I pulled in and gave my DMV letter to Andrew. It's recommended that you bring it with you to the smog checks, so the business can scan it and make sure the business has all of your information when they scan the code on the form. While Andrew was working on my car, I was welcomed to their waiting room. It had a fan and a nice TV. Andrew was so quick with my smog check. I want to say it took me about 10 minutes... the amount of time for me to take my photos for Yelp and read the signs. Just for the record, it is standard industry practice for pricing to vary between sedans, vans, suvs, rvs or trucks. Anyone expecting the same pricing for any type of vehicle they bring in must be ignorant. Specifically for my little Honda Civic, the Smog Check was $26.75 and the Certificate was $8.25. It was $35 total, what a deal! After Andrew finished with my smog check, we headed to his office for payment. They accept cash or credit cards. No checks. Andrew informed me that they will electronically file my "Pass" with the DMV. He stapled all of my paperwork including the DMV letter, the Certificate, the paid itemized receipt and credit card transaction. I took a few of his business cards to share with my family and friends for their smog check needs. I will definitely be coming back to A1 in subsequent years! read more

"Pass or don't pay" policy has hidden conditions. They have a pass or don't pay sticker prominently affixed to their storefront window. And their website states that 2000+ vehicles qualify for pass or don't pay, which applies to "most" situations. But these situations were never mentioned, nor were the exclusionary situations stated. So apparently, "most" situations does not apply to vehicles that have a check engine light. In that case, the pass or don't pay policy is null, even for model year 2000+ vehicles. And the fee would still be charged even though the smog check will be an automatic fail. Electing not to get a smog check here, I then took my vehicle to another pass or don't pay business. And they, true to their word, smog checked my vehicle without charging me anything. This difference in experience shows that the way this business implements the pass or don't pay policy is not universal. I would hesitate to call their pass or don't pay policy false advertising, but it would come close to that. This is more like advertising a feature or service with hidden conditional terms that is not revealed until the customer arrives and requests the service. Mr. Awad, I understand that no one does business for free. But if you can't absorb the cost of the occasional fail and no pays, you shouldn't advertise that you have a pass or don't pay policy and operate as a more honest business. read more

Pass or don't pay means nothing. Went in to have smog test. I was told that my car couldn't be tested because of rpm and sample delusion. Had those issues repaired and came back to get a test. The tester made a notation on the form that I would have to pay whether I passed or failed. The test was aborted, (meaning no pass or fail -just NOT TESTED) but I was still charged. I found out that smog shops can't charge for an aborted test. Now I filed a complaint with the California Department of Automotive Repair. Below you say I didn't pay, but I did pay, under duress because you were holding my keys and paperwork. Just unfair -AND I've been to your shop before. He takes walk in and no appointments needed. The price for my 2014 Honda Accord was $35. I went in today at 9:00 a.m. and the employee was very helpful. Guy was an absolute a$$. He is the owner of the place but yet has no respect for his customers and is not a man of his word. His website states exactly "Found Cheaper Coupon? Bring the coupon to us and we will match most coupons if it's a star certified test only station in the city of Upland." So I did exactly that, brought him the coupon for 26.75 star certified AND at his exact address and number... and he says "nope i can't do that because it's an expired coupon. Hmm okay well the coupon has no "expiration date" and neither does the website state that. So if you're gonna "match a coupon price" stick to your word. OR state exactly that on your website that YOUR coupons have expiration dates (although they don't). OR just don't have it on your website whatsoever. This place is the best. I take all my cars to him. It's cheaper than other places and it's always done fast. So I had a smog test done and it didn't read because it had a new battery put in it and I didn't drive it enough for it to register with the test. So it failed he charged me nothing and told me to drive it 50 miles and keep it at 60mph consistently for miles. I did that brought it back and it registered. He could've just charged me and he didn't. That says a lot to me read more

This place could be a good value for a 2000+ SEDANS with their $26 coupon. However, be aware of sharp price increases for SUVs and other vehicles. We took in our 2004 Subaru Forester, about the smallest car you could call an SUV, and it cost $41 + fees. We typically use Foothill Quicky Smog, but thought we would try to save a few bucks.
