My transmission was rebuilt here and didn't even last 50 miles. I'm pretty sure they put it back together wrong and won't take responsibility. Makes absolutely zero sense. If you run a Muncie 4sp. transmission -- DO NOT TAKE YOUR TRANS TO THIS SHOP!! You will get ripped off. So where do I start. First off when I got to the shop I wanted to speak directly with the mechanic but there is a front desk gate keeper (george) that won't even let you look at him until you commit _ redflag #1 I asked the gate keeper to not put Taiwan gears in my Muncie. He basically said I'm going to price you out of my shop if I dont use (taiwan) gears. I needed my daily driver going and was caught off guard by his cageyness. I relented. I got my part back and upon installation I noticed right away that the trans was leaking out of the back and they didnt replace the shifter bushings like I asked. I didnt even get 6 weeks into driving around only to have the 1st and 2nd gears go south. It sounds like a handful of nuts being churned in a blender. My car is now undrivable. I had to send the transmission to CRAIG WRIGHT to have it done right. DO NOT USE THIS SHOP. They suck for muncie and I'm sure at everything else. Found AA Gears & Shafts through Yelp and after reading their reviews decided to give them a shot. They were a short 20 minute drive from my house on the 10 fwy so it was pretty convenient as well. I called them to see if they would be interested in helping with my project. I had a rear axle off of a 30 year old truck that we are in the process of rebuilding. We were putting a ton of new parts and I wanted to have the axle inspected, fluids replaced, bearings replaced, and have the shafts and gears inspected for any damage. They were receptive and provided a general idea of costs over the phone. I brought the axle in and we further discussed the job and the price estimates. The estimates went up a bit from our initial call but I wasn't too phased by it as that's pretty normal once a mechanic inspects what needs to be done. There were also some contingency costs if they needed to replace shafts (which they wound up replacing 1 of 2). They were communicative throughout the process and made sure I could inspect the work before they sealed up the differential. All in all I am pretty happy so far. I recently took my 2001 mustang in because the manual transmission was making some grinding noise when I was slowing down on the lower gears. I was met by George who took the time to explain and breakdown what the job might entail. I left my car was them and he phoned he a few days later so he could show which parts of the transmission needed to be replaced. I really appreciated that as well since he wanted me to understand and actually see what they were going to do and replace. I believe it's time to give them a derserving review. I have a 1971 BMW 2002 with a getrag 5speed transmission. I was changing the clutch when I decided to clean the transmission. I must have removed a lock screw that fell and locked the transmission inside. A friend tried to help me and we disassembled the transmission. We had no luck in finding the issue. I found AA and decided to take a chance and take my dismantled transmission to them. They explained what they would do and gave me an estimate. They put the transmission together and got it rebuilt and ready to go in about 2 weeks due to the difficulty of finding parts. Javier was pretty patient with my eagerness so get the transmissiom back since I've never used them before. I picked up the transmission and installed it in the car only to find out it was leaking on one of the seals. It was a bit of a hassle to remove it again and take it back but Javier was accommodating with the issue and got it done the same day. He told me to bring it back if there are any issues. This was around 4-5 months ago. I've since taken the car to Monterey on a 6 hour drive, my weekly 50-100 mile drives cruising the canyons or Malibu and have taken it to big willow in willow springs raceway. The transmission is much quieter than before and haven't had any issues since. Would recommend this place whos looking for a quality rebuild with good customer service at a fair price. AA Gears & Shafts rules. I'd '63 Valiant Wagon magic-shifted nearly the very last out of the 3-speed manual transmission - it was going south fast, wouldn't last another month... week... day? Francisco Valderrama had told me that these guys were known as the best around. I had no idea, though, if they'd work on a gearbox this old. Called up and George was as friendly as could be and assured me that he, Javier and the rest of the gents were completely comfortable in the vintage zone. I brought it in, they R n' R'd it, it needed a rebuild and it got it. I drove it around and the tranny was perfect, but the sloppy linkage was that much more of a drag with a sweet gearbox working now. So between George, Javier & the gents at AA G&S's, they knew a cat that could work on the shift linkage in the steering column. They removed the column, took it to that fella, and he did miracle work. He found (somehow) a shifter column housing to replace mine - which was jacked to high heaven, beyond, upon inspection of the interior, one would imagine could allow shifting. And now, the car shifts like butter. Better than ever since 2000, when I first got it. The transmission is smooth as silk and pulling at the chain like it's raring to go with power to spare. It's a dream to drive. There were was a tiny tweak here and there and dealing with that was so easy. Javier made sure everying was just right, and seemed determined that they would not finish with the machine until it was perfect. The main tweak was not their responsibility: the speedo cable was leaking such that when the trans was filled properly with gear oil, it'd leak. So I found one on el web that would fit - not easy to do, friends, and not cheap - and brought it in. Javier had it installed ASAP and although that was not part of the transmission job, really, didn't ask me for dough for that repair - I had to offer it. And about dough... the entire job cost considerably less than what I thought it would. There was no sticker shock. So the upshot of all this is that George, Javier, and the rest of the experts at AA Gears & Shafts did a killer job on my old (63' Valiant Wagon) ride, went above and beyond the call of duty, charged me less than I expected, and were a flat out pleasure to deal with. I couldn't recommend anyone more highly. If you have transmission problems, hit them up without a moments hesitation. Thank you gentlemen! read more

After hearing some whining coming from the rear end, I brought the car down to AA and Javier immediately considered several possibilities, already you could tell he was someone who took pride in doing the job right. This is a shop that knows what they are doing for transmissions and differentials. Javier took the car in, provided updates and cost possibilities as he and his crew looked through the differential, and knew the value of preserving parts that did not need replacing. After finding the best possible parts available, and charging a very fair price for the work, I am happy to say that my car has never sounded or felt better in 30 years! These guys are true artists in their profession and I cannot recommend their work enough! On top of that, it's a family run business and they have rad cats just chillin' and sleepin' on the gears while you wait. Not only did they build me a great "Rockcrusher" , but when I had trouble with the shifter I purchased, unrelated to their work, they took special care and time in remedying the problem and identifying anything they saw. Let me tell you my story. I am restoring a 1990 Suzuki Sidekick, a cute little 4x4, not many of them out there anymore. It's hard to find good people who want to work on my project, because parts are rare and they usually haven't worked on one before, so it takes extra time and energy to correctly diagnose and fix problems. In other words, it's a hassle for most mechanics to deal with. The honest ones usually pass on it, and the dishonest ones take it and charge me for work they don't do correctly or just don't do at all. That was the case with my first transmission place. I asked the guy to do a full transmission rebuild, he agreed and took my $900, and when I got it back it wouldn't go into reverse (which worked when I gave it to him). He then said he only did a reseal (never did find out why, when I asked for a complete rebuild), and said it wasn't his fault, but would fix it for an additional $300 - which I stupidly gave him. When I got it back for the second time, it was completely screwed up. When I threatened to take him to court, he gave me back $600, and I wrote off the rest because it would have caused me too much stress to try to collect. I was now smarter about transmissions, so I searched for an honest place for three days before I found AA Gears. They were recommended by another place I called who said they would not take my job, but said George might be able to help me. When I called him, I knew immediately I had found the right place. This man took time to listen to my story and my problem, and agreed to take my job. He quoted me a mid-range price compared to the other quotes I had. I had it towed AA Gears. He sent me pictures of my opened transmission upon request, and even invited me to come see what they were doing if it would help me trust the situation. When I went to pick it up, there were a few customers at the counter. As I waited it slowly dawned on me these other customers were all mechanics from other shops buying parts and asking advice. Pretty good sign they know transmissions! When I got my vehicle, not only did it run and shift like a dream, but the bill was actually LESS than the original quote. George gave me all of my old parts, and went over everything they did. He also told me to call him if anything didn't feel right, and actually called me three days later to check in on how my transmission was doing. This old-fashioned honesty and care is unheard of in modern Los Angeles. AA Gears is amazing if you need parts or service for your transmission. I recommend it highly. read more
