With 9 days left before heading to the West Coast for a wedding that included a Sangeet, I called Aalok to see if they'd be able to help me with a quick turnaround. I was able to pick out a beautiful lehenga that they then tailored perfectly to me. I was given many compliments by Indian women at the event for the authenticity of my lehenga, which was a sign I picked the right place. I discovered that this place did threading from a friend. There has only been one time (in the past 2 years) where i was unhappy with the end result, my brows came out too thin...but maybe it was a new girl? The only thing that bugs me is that the women are pretty unfriendly, and sometimes border line rude. I dont know if its because I'm not indian or what...but i never really get a friendly greeting, no salon appropriate small talk, no "take a look/is that ok?" when they're finished. I mean, i'll keep coming back regardless because the end result is the best ive ever had with my brows, and its dirt cheap, but it would still be nice to see a friendly smile once in a while. read more

Let me preface this with I've NEVER had threading done before!!! And OMG I will never go back to waxing from now on. I remember the countless number of people who have amazing brows and wondered where they had gotten theirs done. And each one of them have told me they know this woman that does threading, yadda yadda yadda... but usually these people that I talk to are also not around my area, i.e. My cousin in Miami or a family friend in NY. So... I walk in to this tiny store that I found on Yelp after doing a search on threading and Waltham and low and behold there is in fact one right in my 'hood! I walk in and am greeted by 4 extremely lovely Indian women who are chatting in the late afternoon. I was actually nervous about getting threading done, but they all assured me that it will be fine. $8 - and cash for any beauty services. Sweet I have the cash on me. I walk towards the back of the store and sit in one of the stools. Summa (sp?) did my threading and she was awesome about it! She advised me that it didn't hurt and it didn't! It actually hurt less than waxing. She also did perfection on my brows. I have difficult brows to shape and have never had much luck with esthetians with really shaping shaping (yes I used the word twice on purpose) my brows properly and I have never been able to do it myself. Mostly because if I stare at myself long enough in the mirror, it'll just end up being all lope-sided anyway. But I digress. Summa, had me pull here and lightly hold there, and voila, she does her magic. The other eye gets easier because now I know the process. *Whew!* Thank you Thank you Thank you for restoring some shape to my face. My cousin had advised me not to do anything with my brows for 6 months, okay so I didn't last the whole 6 months, but alas I have normal brows again. And I'll keep coming back! read more

Oh... I am definitely a fan. As are my eyebrows.. I'm a fairly low maintenance girl. I don't dye my hair, I'm horrible at keeping up with haircuts, if my makeup takes longer than 10minutes I will leave without it, and I hadn't done my eyebrows until 2010. At that point I only did them because it was free with a haircut (compliments of a Groupon). I did them once, realized I looked significantly better, went back to do them again, and then ignored my eyebrows for months. I just could not justify the $20. Besides, the first time it barely hurt and looked good. The second time I was less than thrilled. I thought I would just have natural eyebrows again until someone introduced me to Aalok. I'm going to be totally honest with you all. I hadn't done my eyebrows in about 8 months. They weren't looking good. As a direct result of that and my incredibly sensitive skin, my threading did hurt a bit. I flinched like a baby and I'm not ashamed to say I think they were laughing at me. It's fine. Since then it doesn't hurt at all!! And I am a total wimp. Honestly, come up to me and just say the word "needle". Enjoy watching the tears swell in my eyes and how you can visually see my heart race. But this total wimp can take threading (especially when you aren't cleaning up 8 months of my negligence). Moving to Boston meant having to find someone new to do my threading. I found this place upon recommendation from a friend and its been a great find! This little unassuming store is right on Moody St amongst a sea of other ethnic grocery and novelty stores. While the name suggests that the store carries strictly fashions (indian clothing), there is a little "salon" in the back of the store. There is only one person working there at any given time. Not only do they offer threading, they also offer haircuts and traditional Indian henna application among other services. While I haven't tried any of their other services, their threading service is excellent (although it could be a bit more hygenic hence the four stars). Eyebrows are $8, unlike the $20 services offered on Newbury St, and upper lip is $5. On Tuesdays, they offer a discount and threading is only $6. And oh, make sure you go to Neeta, the other woman who works there (whose name escapes me) did my eyebrows a little too thin. read more

I work about 10 minutes from this place so its definitely convenient for a lunch appointment. As suggested by Rozina, I asked for Neeta and she made my brows the perfect thickness and the prices are awesome compared to some other places in boston. Only complaint I have about Neeta is that she applied A LOT of pressure onto my skin and I stayed red for longer than usual. Also, she didn't ask if everything was okay when she was done - just wrote me a slip to bring up to the registrar to pay. I usually go to Nikki - an emerson student that I found on yelp that does threading from her apartment but I wanted to try Aalok just because its so close to work. I will most likely get my next threading from Nikki if I can get an appointment. read more

This place was very very small. I went to look for saris. There was an Eid special, but most of the saris came without blouses and/or with unstitched blouses with not many choices under $100... I was happy with the sales associates but the place was so uncomfotably hot and there really is so little room! It's like walking through a hallway. The variety was poor and didn't meet my style. I went to Chhabra's in Cambridge (only about 10 minutes away on Mass Ave) and I was immediately pleased. I would reccommend there for Indian wear. read more

This is a no frills kind of place, so if you're wanting that spa experience you should probably go somewhere else. If you want to get your eyebrows looking fresh to death for a reasonable price, go to Aalok. I get my eyebrows threaded here every 3 weeks. They do a good job and have lower prices than any other threading establishment I've found in this area!! The threading women there are generally very friendly and recognize me as a regular. I especially recommend getting either Pallavi or Maneesha (sp?) to thread your eyebrows - they both give them a good shape and are relatively quick. I have occasionally gotten small nicks from threading but I think that could happen with almost anyone. Overall, I give Aalok the thumbs up! read more

Great place to go for eyebrow threading! I've honestly never even browsed around any part of the store, but the threading is so worth it. Its $8, $6 for students on weekdays (which I always say I am). Also, they don't just clean them up like a lot of places, they shape them, and not too thin either. I never make an appointment, and they have been able to take me without waiting every time. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the place itself is small, cramped, and I'd go so far as to say dirty (the store itself, not the threading area), and you get threaded in the very front of the store. Some of the women in there aren't very friendly, but some are pretty nice. If you can get past those details, my eyebrows always look great when I leave, and you can't beat the price. read more

The worst tailoring job. I trusted this shop with my purchased semi stitched Anarkali from India. The shop agreed to tailor it for me. I got it back in a mess with nothing really done. It looked terrible because the "tailor" doesn't even have skill to do pleating properly. The shop keeper tried to blame it on the style saying slyly that it didn't go with my figure. Well of course! The stitching was so off that the hips were at my waist! The stitches were uneven and I had to wait another two hours for them to "try" and fix it. I also purchased a blouse that was to be stitched to size....also received in a mess with the cheapest of clasps. The entire amount of $150 that I spent there went to waste as nothing was wearable and the jewelry fell apart. A completely dishonest shop which was once well-run. What a disaster. Brought material here to have a fitted blouse made to match a sari I was given as a gift. Design was beautiful and it fits perfectly. Cost was about $30-$40 which is reasonable considering they provided the underlying blouse material, and that they take it back to India to be made. While I wouldn't say Aalok is a destination, if you live, work or go to school in the area, do your eyebrows a favor and do not pass this place up! This place was recommended to me by a friend and I was so pleased with the experience. I had never tried threading before but I am a changed woman. For $6 (for students, $8 regularly), I received a less than 10-minute eyebrow shaping (very natural and clean looking) which has lasted quite well these past couple weeks (with some minor tweezing upkeep before I go back for my next threading). The shop is small, yes, but they are seriously efficient. I did not have time to browse the merchandise but I will make sure to do so next time I'm in. There will certainly be a next time. And it's always good to support your local business so hooray! read more

This is my go-to place for eyebrow shaping. I turned to threading after a visit to NYC and was so happy to have this charm of a store open up in my hometown. I love how I can just walk in and get my eyebrows done in less that 15 minutes --in and out. I wish they kept the threading chairs/area in the back of the store, though. I hate having to get my eyebrows done in the front of the store (without any privacy) and being the FIRST thing people see when they walk in the store. The location of the threading chair, though, does not interfere with the quality of work--and that I appreciate more than anything. I have been coming here ever since the store opened and will not go anywhere else. Love having a place that I can count on for brow shaping--everytime. oh!! and did I mention that they offer a student discount?? You get extra kudo points for that Aalok! : ) read more

After reading the reviews, I had fairly high hopes for this place. I went in on a Sunday afternoon, and an older woman threaded my upper lip area (darn genetics!), which is super super sensitive. I explained to her that it was my first time getting it done, but her English was difficult to understand, so I have no idea if she really understood me. We managed to get through the threading, with me tearing up at the pain and her seemingly a tad frustrated with such a wuss for a client. It was over very quickly, though. She handed me a slip of paper with something written on it and told me "three dollars." Then, I went up to the register, handed her the paper, and paid. I think they only take cash, so it was a good thing I came prepared. I can't speak for having your eyebrows done, but based on my initial experience, it would probably be similar but slightly more expensive. There is a sign saying you must show your student ID to get the student discount, and they only give the discount Tuesdays thru Fridays (no weekends, and they're closed on Mondays). I would definitely return to Aalok for threading and to browse a bit around the store. However, I am going to try some numbing gel before my next visit. I've been using their threading as well as facial services for over 2 years which is a statement in itself. couple pros - good threading, quick and not bad rates. They welcome walk-ins which is convenient. You have to take an appointment for facials, though. The oxygen facial is rejuvenating. Neeta has a good hand when it comes to massaging the face, making me want to go back for more. I've been to other places and they're not bad either. This is convenient with quality and without putting a hole in my pocket. read more

I stopped waxing my eyebrows a while ago because my usual lady moved away so I was at a loss. Then, I found this place and became a fan immediately. The place is small and they have two ladies threading eye brows. I recommend Maneesha. She is very nice and makes my eyebrows look great. Even my boyfriend commented on how great my eyebrows looked! A boy noticing your eyebrows threaded? If THAT doesn't make you want to go here, I don't know what will...! Eyebrows threading costs $8 - how affordable! They also sell clothing items, but it has never been the motive of my visit, so I can't comment on that. read more

I live on Moody Street in Waltham and had been schlepping it all the way up to a Burlington eyebrow threading shop (Smita's Boutique) for almost a year. I was willing to risk my brows to Aalok for it's convenience. I was moderatly pleased with the expereince. The women were not overly polite, but not intentionally rude. Before the woman began threading, I did tell her what I wanted, even though she did not ask. I was pleased with the result, and I plan on going back. read more

This place gets the job done at an affordable price ($8 for eyebrow threading - for comparison, eyebrow waxing in waltham is $16, threading in brighton is $10). I came in asking to have my brows be threaded so that they would be straighter, the lady nodded, and then went ahead making them archy - she explained that because my brows are too archy to begin with , but I'd appreciate if she had just told me that upfront. Not really impressed. I went because of the great reviews on Yelp but to be honest, the threader didn't ask me what I wanted, sure she was quick, but she didn't do that great of a job. I went home and "finished" the job by tweezing because it wasn't really even. Also they didn't really shape my brows just cleaned them up, when I like a bit of an arch shaped in. I came in this store after going to another Indian clothing store down the street. I was attending an Indian wedding later that evening and was looking for a scarf or some Indian accessories to add to my western dress. (I am not Indian) There were two woman in the back who were working who instantly started pulling out some scarfs for me. I'm not really sure how it happened, but before long they were wrapping me up in a saree. I had never worn such an outfit before and was unsure if I could pull it off at the wedding. I also wasn't sure I'd be able to wrap the saree by myself at home. The two ladies helped me practice myself, but ultimately they invited me back into the store on my way to the wedding so they could wrap me up. I paid $15 for the petticoat and $28 for the saree. I also bought a set of bangles last minute for $10. I think the saree looked beautiful and I fit right in at the wedding. These woman were so kind and helpful and I would definitely recommend checking this place out! read more

People seem to be all about their eyebrow threading, and I saw many happy customers come and go in the 1.5+ hours I spent total in this shop... Why did I spend 1.5+ hours here? Good question. I came in to check out the clothing. I was content to just look through what they had ready-made, but, with me being a larger lady, of course nothing available would fit me (I'm an 18... there kind of should've been SOMETHING ready-made that would've fit, you'd think....but no...and that's okay - I'm used to that at Indian clothing stores). I just wanted simple outfits, but was shown books of bridal/party dresses... I expressed that really all I need in my life is a simple salwar kameez set or two...and maaaaybe a pretty party anarkali if it could be just right. They showed me some mumus. Literally - polyester, garishly digitally printed mumus. Nothing Indian about them. I looked at them quizzically and asked them if they were serious, and if this was some Indian fashion trend I didn't know about. Then they somehow realized I knew my stuff, and dug out a couple of salwar kameez ready-to-sew sets they had stashed away somewhere. They were beautiful colors, nice embroidery and crystal work, and the fabrics were large enough that they'd definitely be able to make me a nice suit from them. I got excited and asked if they had anything else that would work for me, and they said no - just those. Eventually they did dig out a suit that had been made from a sari but with no embroidery/beadwork, and said they could do something like that... They also offered to sew panels into the sides of existing beautiful suits... Sorry, not interested - those are the two standard things to offer the fat girl at the Indian clothing shop. So, it's going medium-well so far. At least there are a couple things that will work. I decide to get them. It's time to take my measurements... They had an inexperienced and young apprentice do it. She asked her mentor questions the entire time, and was very unsure of herself. I was pretty sure some of the measurements she wrote down were a couple inches smaller than I saw myself on her measuring tape, so I asked her to double check them... They were indeed too small, and she corrected the notes... I pay for the fabrics, and am told it will be three weeks until the tailor can finish the suits. Okay. I leave pretty happy. I get a call after just about 1.5 weeks - they're done, early! I am very happy! I make the drive back there to go pick up my things. And guess what....they are about 2" too small in quite a few places - especially the upper arms and chest. The fabric on the kameez/kurti is super tight. It really doesn't fit. The pants are huuumungous - far beyond what even someone twice as fat as me would need. But whatever - they have a drawstring and thus they'll serve, so I just shut up about that. What I need is kurtis that I can actually wear, if I'm going to pay for them. The problem is that the fabric is cut SO CLOSE that there is barely any room to make the needed size increases. The seamstress on staff that day tries to fix it by letting out the inner seam. It isn't enough - it's only an extra 1/2" or so. I show her how it totally isn't enough. They try to convince me that it is - both the seamstress and, especially, the other woman in the back of the shop there to help her. They actually tried to say how nice I looked when I first came out of the dressing room to show them how insanely tight the kurti was as well - to which I gave them the best "are you kidding me????" look that I could muster, and insisted that no, it definitely did not fit. She made a second round of adjustments. It's still not enough. My "custom" suit is too small - even though the fabric it was cut from was more than enough. I was so very excited to find a place that had embroidered/beaded suits that could be sewn to order. But now I know that really, what I'll need to do is perhaps buy the fabrics from them, but then definitely sew them myself. The tailor did a fine job with the measurements they were given. The seamstress on staff tried to fix the problem - so much that she resewed the top twice. But the measurements that were taken down by the inexperienced and young apprentice worker when I came in to get measured were irreparably too small. My two suits were $105 each, and I really feel that it is money lost, as the suits still do not fit comfortably. I made it really clear that I wasn't happy...but they offered no solution to the problem that the fabric had just been cut too small and was never going to work. It became clear that I either had to pay for the fabrics for nothing, or pay for and take home my slightly-too-small, uncomfortable "custom" suits. All in all, I'm really sad about this. I was so excited and happy to find another place for Indian clothing, other than Chhabra Bridal (which is great!) and Brocades. But in the end, I'm very disappointed, and feel I wasted a ton of money very foolishly... read more

Alok is a complete rip off. i do not mind if salons are overpriced if the service is good and they are deliverng good results. but in Alok the service is very mediocre. Last week the woman made my eyebrows so thin that i look horrible. If you want to ruin your nice eyebrows then you should definitely visit this place. Wonderful place, wonderful owner. Finally they got the ambiance right. Got a more friendly beautician who is extremely fast. She threads so quick, it's painless. (There's one girl there that's slow but the main two are awesome - Manisha and Pallavi.) Makes me feel like I didn't waste any time. And my eyebrows look amazing. I always get a scarf ($10) or bangles ($6) and feel wonderful spending money there because it's well priced. Only catch is that the new designs never stay long because they only have a few pieces of each kind, maybe not more than one. So if you want new desi designs, go weekly (seriously). Every time I go to get my brows done, I take a good look at the party designs. The owner is awesome, and her right hand lady, Asha, is really good too - really helpful. read more

As the other posts have mentioned, it is a small shop and the eyebrow threading station is up in the front of the store. I did not encounter any other customers while I was there, but I was only there for about 10-15 minutes. The woman who did my brows did a good job, but it seemed as though she wasn't interested in me as a customer. While she was threading she was talking loudly to her friend across the store. After she was finished, I took a look in the mirror and asked her to thin out my left brow as it seemed a little uneven to me. When we were done they were gracious for me coming in, and the entire experience was ok with speedy service. read more

I have been coming here for years to get my eyebrows threaded after a friend recommended this place to me. They're definitely hidden and I was initially doubtful due to the fact that it seemed like they only sell clothing. My concerns were immediately eliminated after my first session. With very reasonable prices and great/consistent threading (I've been coming here for more than three years), I highly recommend this place.
