I reached out to Aaron when I discovered that my tenants were conducting potentially illegal and dangerous activities in the basement. This somehow seemed to personally offend him. I have worked in the legal field for over a decade and I have never encountered a more rude, sneering and condescending individual. Our first phone conversation was seemingly OK and then it went downhill from there. Afterwards nearly every question I asked was met with disdain. At times he seemed to be on the verge of giving himself an ulcer. He would constantly interrupt and attempt to browbeat. At no point did I feel like this was a lawyer who would have my best interests at heart. My personal favorite moment of our short-lived relationship is when he dramatically sighed and said "Unfortunately, it looks like I will have to do some work for you." I assume no one forced him to be a lawyer. Eventually he decided that we should serve the tenants a termination of lease. He misspelled "dangerous" on the notice. You would think for a 3K retainer he would avoid such sloppy mistakes. He then decided to change his mind at the last minute and that was the final straw. It was my mistake to put up with Aaron's bad behavior but as I was in a time crunch I felt that I had limited options. From the many positives reviews (I assume most of them are real), Aaron does know how to behave like an adult and treat people in a professional and courteous manner. However, if you are one of the people that Aaron decides to show his true and lowly nature to, hang up immediately as this burst hemorrhoid is not worth one second of your time. There were more positive reviews than negative so I thought I'd give this guy a try. Unfortunately the negative comments ring true. He answered his phone when calling the main number, seemed cordial for the first minute then as soon as he realized I was a new customer he talked as fast as an auctioneer, letting me know he'd text me an email for more appropriate correspondence, mentioning he gets paid for his time, charging a minimum of $200 for 1/2 hour or less. He didn't pause for a second before hanging up, never hearing the details of my case. So yes, has a rude personality as others have said. He never followed up with the email as he said he would. Our landlord refused to give us our security deposit back and even though we knew our landlord was breaking the RTLO, we didn't initially realize the ordinance also calls for the landlord to pay lawyer and court fees when you win in this situation. As someone who has attended law school, I know what I can and cannot handle. I also know a reasonable attorney when I see one. I had recently moved out of a rental to move into the homeownership world. I had a perfectly fine relationship with my landlord of 3 years -- until I moved out and he paid me less than half of my security deposit. My landlord had used the money for minor wear and tear, including painting the apartment and replacing a light fixture that had never worked since I moved in. He also failed to provide itemized receipts for what these repairs cost. After reading his reviews, I contacted Aaron to see what my options were. He asked me to send him a copy of the letter from my landlord as well as a copy of my lease. He got back to me almost immediately and said I had a great case. In addition to what I mentioned above, it turns out my landlord also hadn't paid interest on my security deposit, the penalty for which is twice the amount of the security deposit. In his defense, after I sent my landlord a letter, he offered to pay me half the remainder of the security deposit, but it was too little too late -- and if he had been willing to do that in the first place, why not just send that amount from the beginning? The whole thing felt dishonest on his part, which is why I'm glad I contacted Aaron. Aaron emailed me often to keep me informed of how the process was going. We didn't go to court since my landlord basically had no case, and the whole thing was settled in about two months. I used Aaron a few years back and can't believe it's taken me this long to write a review! Aaron is the real deal- I promise that these reviews are not exaggerated. I was living in Printers Row and was paying $1,800 in rent (at the time this was pretty high for the area) and I had a security deposit of $3,600. I was diagnosed with epilepsy and was having several grand mal seizures a week- I couldn't live alone and was forced to withdraw from school and move back in with my parents at the time. My landlords lived out of state and weren't particularly friendly. They basically said they were sorry I was having health problems but I was SOL on the lease. I initially reached out to my dad who was a law professor at the time- he didn't specialize in real estate law so he referred me to Aaron who had come highly recommended from a fellow law professor in the real estate space. At the time Yelp wasn't as big so I don't remember looking at Yelp but when I spoke to Aaron on the phone, I immediately felt at ease. If there is one thing that I can NOT handle, it is stress. It seems I am always getting myself into epic messes, and this time I was dealing with a DISASTER. After many a quarrel with management and my landlord to get the plumbing in my apartment fixed, the inevitable happened. My apartment flooded with sewage. I was forced to live in a hotel for over two weeks .I had to throw out many of my possessions, get new furniture, new carpets, and mold had to be removed from the bathrooms. I am not sure if some of the reviews are written by Aaron himself, but what I am sure about is that I will never work with him again. He was very hyped up as a lawyer who can break a lease. To say that he didn't live up to the hype would be an understatement. First off, from the very beginning this guy was impossible to get in touch with. Yes, I understand he's a lawyer and that he's busy. But aren't we all? It seemed like he's doing me a favor by calling me back. Seriously? Ironically, he was very easy to reach prior to taking my money and depositing it the same day. Second, he was hyped up to be "the best" and able to break any lease. He cannot. My wife and I are very happy with our experience with Aaron. The landlord at our prior residence used an invalid lease and chose not to return our security deposit when we departed. Aaron terminated the lease for us and ran through the proper protocols to ensure we were doing everything right. However, we had no contact information for the landlord (one reason the lease was invalid) and Aaron tactically was able to draw him (his attorney at least) out of the shadows. I hope I'm like a lot of people when I say: I'm not a litigious person. I never have any real desire to take out my ire on people in a civil court. However, there are times when the only real recourse a person has is in civil court, and this is where Aaron Krolik came in. My husband and I had a terrible experience with a landlord in 2012-13. Long story short, we were being kicked out of the unit because he went in to foreclosure and didn't disclose it to us. We went through a lot of back-and-forth with him and the new owner of the unit to no avail so we just decided the best thing to do would be to leave. We gave our notice and we were out about a week before our lease expired. Fast forward about a month. We never received our security deposit back. After some amateur research, we realized that Chicago has some pretty clear and strict regulations regarding landlord conduct and the return of security deposits. Now another 15-20 days pass and we really don't have our security deposit back. According to the Chicago Landlord-Tenant Ordinance, we're owed double what we paid. We first tried to negotiate with our former landlord and he just sent us a check for less than half the original deposit with some ridiculous excuse for why he withheld money. There are a couple of things that I want to say before telling you my story, because I think that the credibility of the reviewer matters as much as the review itself. I work with attorneys every day. I have a JD and an MBA, and am myself an attorney at the top-rated law firm in Chicago (and the world for my practice area). Before I hire ANYONE, I do extensive due diligence. Though I have a deep knowledge of contracts and corporate matters, I had never dealt with a consumer lease, so I decided to speak with an expert. It was the best decision I could have made. I had an issue with my lease, where I had inadvertently violated a notice provision and was on the hook for $1,200. After about 5 minutes of speaking with me, Aaron could tell that my case was a loser. He could have lied to me, told me that it was a sure thing, and then charged me for hours of unnecessary work. But instead, he took a very honest and pragmatic approach. He let me know that, ultimately, if this went to litigation, I would probably lose, as there was case law that was directly adverse to my position. Despite that, he took several hours of his time to strategize with me about things I could do outside of the legal process. In the end, AS A DIRECT RESULT OF HIS RECOMMENDATIONS, the apartment building dropped the claim and I paid them NOTHING. When I asked Aaron about his billable rate, he told me NOT TO WORRY ABOUT IT. The reason for this is simple: people don't like getting bad news and, sometimes, it's a lawyer's job to give it. In particular, a girl named Lindsay left a review that I want to address. Lawyers are the people you call when things take a turn for the worst. Deep down, most people expect that lawyers will be able to fix everything. But you should know that some things can't be fixed, because the law may not be on your side. Often, the BEST legal advice that a lawyer can give is NOT TO BRING A CLAIM. If you do, it will only cost you your time, money, and sanity. Now, I know it can be difficult to hear that your situation may not have a tenable legal solution. But think about the alternative. There are a lot of lawyers out there who would let you bring a losing claim, just so they collect the fees. Lindsay, I understand that you didn't like the answer you got, but that doesn't make it any less correct. The truth is often a hard pill to swallow. Another thing that I want to mention is that lawyers are not therapists. When you call and want to talk about things other than the facts, or aren't completely forthcoming about facts, it just wastes everyone's time. The ethical and responsible thing to do is to let you know the situation (that you don't have a claim), and to go advocate on behalf of the clients that do. Lastly, if you are anything other than COMPLETELY HONEST with your lawyer, then there's really no point in hiring one. We can tell when you're dodging questions or when you don't answer truthfully. In fact, it's OUR JOB TO KNOW. So it really doesn't help anyone to CALL US TO DO A JOB, and then get upset when we do that job effectively. We're not doing this to make you feel bad; we're just anticipating the other side's arguments. Do you think your adversary was going to sugar coat the issue? If, after 5 minutes, the people on your side think you're not being completely honest, what do you think opposing counsel is going to say after a month of discovery? read more

I was referred to Aaron through a friend regarding our apt lease in Chicago. On a whim we got a great deal and decided to buy a house. You cant always plan these things around your lease. I tried for months to re-rent our apt and help my landlord, who was not helpful at all. Not sure how this guy has so many positive reviews but if they aren't paid reviews he must have had one horrible of a bad day and took it out on a potential client . Here's my story and I will add his response comment from google , because it's quite hilarious . I called Aaron yesterday seeking his help to get out of my apartment building without any financial reprocussions and he told me to email him a copy of my lease and he would read it over and get back to me . So I immediately did as such at 1:04pm. I gave him time to look over the lease and didn't hear back from him until I called him the next day which he asked me what I wanted to do and I was explaining my situation with him and he told me "all you're doing is whining " . I was immediately in shock and asked him why he would speak to a potential client in that manner and he then goes on to say "I don't think I'm going to be able to help you" Yeah I didnt want your "professional" help after that anyway. What "professional" says that to a potential client?! My "whining" was valid complains to my STORY that leaves me eligibile to SUE. You unprofessional jerk. Take your money and time and go elsewhere . This guy doesn't care about anything but being a condescending prick. Response from the owner : "You refused to let me talk. I had ideas. Everything you discussed had nothing to do with your ultimate concern. I listened for 5 minutes straight and had enough I'm sorry." My response to owner's response: I did not refuse to let you talk I was explaining my situation to you and as a professional attorney you should listen to your clients story to get all the information about the case. Everything I said was relevant to the case . If you had ideas you could have politely explained them when I stopped talking to give you a chance to respond instead of saying "I'm whining " you should have replaced the negative comment with a positive one . A side note from me: There's no excuse for the unprofessional character you displayed. Even if you by any chance had a bad day and took it out on someone , get it together and be professional. This is your reputation and if you're going to treat people in that manner it's going to get around and tarnish you. I hope you can learn from this review and grow as a better person . Let me start out by saying that my experience getting my full deposit back was long and painful. My former landlord lived out of state, didn't show up to hearings, tried to move the case to California, and didn't pay my judgment. I expected this to go on literally for years, and then have to try to collect through an agency. Thanks to Aaron, I wasn't alone in this process. He was responsive to my emails and answered all my questions through this ordeal. He unfortunately had to take some tough action to get a resolution, but here I am with my cash back. I would recommend him 10 times over if you have any trouble getting your deposit back like I did. Briefly, my former landlord charged me $400 to touch up paint, and sent me the rest more than 45 days after moving out. Just got off the phone with Aaron a bit ago. He's a great guy, gave us really fair advice. Not overly litigious; was expecting him to advise us to sue in a seemingly cut and dry case involving a late security deposit but he instead took a more reasonable (and in my opinion pragmatic) approach and advised we settle as is to save us on court costs/time. I connected with Aaron in Nov 2020 when he helped me break my lease. Aaron was so knowledgeable with RLTO and the law that he was able to successfully and legally terminate my lease almost immediately. On top of that, he was able to sue my landlord for illegally keeping my security deposit and additional reasons, so I ended up with even more money back. That sets Aaron apart from others; he went above and beyond in that sense, maybe the most others would have done was break my lease and that's it, but Aaron did everything that he could do.
