I was referred to Jim Argo via the general manager of the Watergate complex in Emeryville, CA. I own rental property in that complex. I was having trouble getting a loan or refinancing because the property was unwarrantable for a period of time. There was litigation going on and repairs were needed on some of the balconies. (Not on my balcony or the balconies in the adjacent units above and below my unit). So I had to look for a private lender, rather than a conventional lender. The property manager told me that Jim was familiar with Watergate, that he knew private lenders, and that he could help me get a loan. I called Jim and started to explain the trouble I had with prior brokers I had contacted. He clearly was not interested in learning or hearing about my experience. He interrupted me and said that he needs to make money. Then he laughed. As though somehow that laugh was supposed to soften what he had just said. A few days later Jim called me and told me that he could not help. He stated that none of his investors were interested in my property. Then he said that he had told me he would get back to me quickly. It was very clear to me that Jim did not care about me as a consumer. I can appreciate wanting and needing to make money. But when you are dealing with a potential customer, it is never a good idea to let them know that you do not care about them. And, to rush them through a conversation. Particularly if they are trying to give you information you may need to help them. I eventually got a loan through another broker. So it worked out for me. In fact, I had competing offers from different lenders because investors recognized the value in my condo. The broker who eventually got me the loan, never made me feel like he did not care about me. He never made me feel like my needs were not important, or that I was merely a dollar sign. Unlike Jim, he was interested in building relationships. We were able to close the loan in a short period of time.
