Abantal in Seville was a really lovely lunch. The service was attentive. We tried the tasting menu and most of the dishes stood out with beautiful presentation. We really enjoyed the wine pairing and the desserts were delicious. The decor is modern and clean. The dining room is spacious, calm, and it gets busy at lunch time. I'm a little surprised that Abantal holds a Michelin star as I was quite disappointed in the experience. There weren't any particularly memorable dishes. Everything was too heavy and the flavors over complicated. Looking at my photos, I literally cannot remember what anything was. Usually amuse bouches are my favorites because they're always bite sized joy - but these were meh. The desserts were never fully sweet, always had some sort of savory component that didn't blend well. One thing that really irked me was the silverware that was used. The fork was impossible to hold - super round and imbalanced, always rolling around uncomfortably in my hand. Also, each course used the exact same silverware, just a clean set - generally it seems like dishes should have different types of utensils to fit the course that you're eating. Lastly, service was alright. I know it's sort of selfish to not speak Spanish in Spain, but Michelin starred restaurants are recognized globally, so it was odd to me that the sommelier didn't speak any English, except for saying what the name of the wine was - any time you asked a question specifically about the wine, she could not answer. read more

First let me say I know next to nothing about Andalusian regional cooking but a little about Spanish food in general. I also don't know how Michelin stars are awarded so my review might be based on ignorance of those. The restaurant: Elegant, stylistically modern and staff highly professional but of course there's a language barrier and I wished I spoke fluent Spanish and I would've enjoyed the interaction. Food: Amuse Bouchée was cute 1. French Oyster was very intense, not to the faint of heart, but good. 2. Baby shrimps was excellent, reminds me of Amaebi, sweet. 3. Giant Prawns : Spectacular! Perfectly grilled to medium rare, lots of head fat but there's a problem: it was not Deveined. Not acceptable. 4. Meager, a really delicately flavored fish was for me the best dish. 5. Red Tuna "galette". Not sure what the intent was, but it seemed this and 9. Suckling Goat, tastes almost identically, looked like it came out of the same pot and served in a similarly styled vessel. Why ? 6. Suckling pig skin should break like glass and meat should melt in your mouth. It did neither. 7. Duck, I wasn't sure which one it was as there were 3 dishes that came out indistinguishable from each other. And I'm writing this an hour after leaving the restaurant. 8. Crispy beef cheek, nice take on this but in my wife's plate there was a piece that contained bone/tendon. Something hard. 10-13 desserts are all good and wrap up a very interesting experience. If it were only one or two things but, there's a cumulative effect during the course of the meal and we ended up hoping the main courses were over and we could move on to desserts. Price is considerably lower than larger cities but I cannot give more than 3 due to the value equation. I'm glad of the experience but once is good enough. Michelin Star meal of our Spain trip. It was good, but I don't think it was at the same level of other Michelin places that I've been. Dishes were pretty good, although they did get repetitive (many dishes had foam or jelly). Flavors were okay, although no single dish wowed me. In fact I'd say that some tapas dishes that I had earlier at "regular" restaurants were far better than the best dishes here. The main positives were the price (75 euros for the smaller of the 2 options) and the friendly service. Pretty small restaurant so you will need to make a reservation (there is a 50 euro per person cancellation fee for cancellations). Note that the entire restaurant was filled with English speaking guests. read more

I agreed with some of the 3-stars reviews from fellow yelper on Abantal, a Michelin 1-star restaurant. The restaurant is reasonably priced at $80 Euro for the shorter pre-fixe but as mentioned in other reviews, the cooking technique felt a bit 1 note with a lot of similar texture and chilled dishes. There were dishes I barely touched. The bottle of wine we bought was excellent though - the El Pundito is a beautifully made red (Tempranillo) at about 60 Euro, great quality to price ratio!). The two glasses of cava we started our meal with (to pair with the guest few dishes) were good and reasonably priced. The service was unfortunately a bit sub-par, I was surprised still they are a Michelin starred restaurant! There were some good dishes, but unfortunately a lot of them are not memorable and is not worth going (at least for the night we went it was not). It missed the variety of techniques and presentations it felt very flat. read more

Ambiance The restaurant was very sterile and super quiet. I actually whispered. It would have been odd to speak normally. The air was as hot as the temperature outside, made for a very uncomfortable experience When we arrived we asked for the 9 course tasting with wine pairing and co to yes to ask at least 4 more times, it was never given. It was very odd because we were told what the wine paired with and got a list on our table, but it never came. Perhaps it was a Language barrier, but I don't see how since they have one job, to serve the food and wine. Not a crazy request. Service Was fine, except that they wouldn't not do the wine paring. The courses were nicely spaced out, but again just quiet and stiff. We were not comfortable Food Good. The servings were all a soup, puree or foam... I get that it's a theme but might have been too much of a good thing. The meat and lobster was cooked perfectly, really wished there was more of that instead of a foam or puree. Rating: 88/100 pts I was hoping to try some high-class Andalusian cuisine during a stay in Seville, and decided to set my sights on Abantal which, at the time of this writing, is the only restaurant in the city that has been awarded a Michelin star. I was highly satisfied with my choice to eat here, and likely would do so again. While not the best Michelin restaurant I've been to in Spain, it nevertheless displays a high level of culinary excellence, and if I was at all underwhelmed, it is only because of the unsurmountable bar that other similar restaurants in Spain have set, and not due to any faults on Abantal's part. But even so, the 7-course tasting menu is highly affordable, no doubt owing to the overall lower costs of living in this city compared to, say, Barcelona. With that in mind, Abantal may be one of your best choices if you are on a budget but still want to enjoy superlatively fine dining in Spain. The food is highly seasonal, so I'll skip the specifics, but know that chef Julio Fernández Quintero effectively combines traditional Andalusian (Spanish food with pronounced mediterranean influences) elements with a palpable signature flair. Memorable dishes from my course included: -A behemoth shrimp over rice pilaf; the shrimp was fresh from the water and was a thick as steak -Roasted lamb shoulder in gravy with apple slices; this was a great way to enjoy the cuisine's mediterranean influences *See pictures for more on food. I waited 24 hours before writing this review. It took that long to digest some of the food we ate at this Michelin star restaurant. Mind you, I had very high hopes for this restaurant. In fact, my wife and I booked the table for our 20 year wedding anniversary. From the food to the wine list to the service, Abantal failed to impress or inspire. In a city, chock full of amazing restaurants, food, and overall experiences Abantal pales and disappoints. I repeatedly asked myself, as did my wife and family members, "how does a restaurant like this get a Michelin star?" It really diminishes the Michelin award. I hope my description of the food, wine, and service will aide you in making a better decision than I made. Let me begin by saying that the decoration and ambiance at Abantal lacks any artistic direction or atmosphere whatsoever. I have no issues with sparseness or minimalism but I do with bleakness and this is how I would describe the environment. The lights are set bright, as to create a certain pallor in the guests and staff. White walls, with enigmatic (and dull) artwork are all you have to look at. There isn't even a hint of music and therefore one is left feeling as though they are in a cocoon of solitude. Soon the staff approach, but fear not, they will not stay long enough to leave any memorable impression. At various moments throughout the night they will find their way back to your table to change the silverware, over and over and over again until it becomes nearly unbearable. Rather than engaging with the table, discussing the food, the chef's inspirations, anything at all, they stand at the side waiting for their most coveted of tasks, Silverware Clearing. The staff (at the start of the evening) will ask you whether you want the short or long tasting menu, which differ by three dishes. Happily we chose the shorter of the two. I will leave the wine choices and sommelier to their own paragraph but for now would like to focus on the food. Ask me what I ate last night and I will struggle to find a single item worth remembering or even particularly memorable, aside from the first dish. The first plate was some sort of red soup served with a large brown ball of fish and peppers covered in cocoa butter. It was creative but unsatisfying. It was downhill from that point forward. I love photographing food and posting those photos...I have no photos to post from Abantal. After reviewing the three photos I took, I deleted them as they looked unappetizing. Imagine how it looked in the flesh. Several dishes were served with some sort of soupy sauce (all of which tasted the same). A number of plates included a disk of vegetable purée. It looked and tasted like Baby Food. The plates lacked color, texture, cohesion of flavor. There was no contrast only discord on the plate. At one point we were served a scoop of brown duck meat in a pool of brown liquid. I will spare you the analogies to its appearance. By the end of the meal I had the distinct notion that the chef was sitting in back and laughing at all of us for trusting him with our evenings and stomachs. As the dishes progressed their was an uneasiness at our table. I could feel everyone itching to leave and have some real food at any of the restaurants a stone's throw from Abantal. I looked around at the remainder of the patrons that filled the restaurant and all looked as though they were being held hostage along with us. Not a single smile or look of satisfaction could be found in the room, only deathly hunger. No amount of alcohol could help and this brings me to the wines. The Sommelier quietly approached with the wine list. He was impersonal, bordering on cold. After reviewing the wine list, which was organized by Spanish regions and other countries, I signaled for him to return to the table. I asked about the Listan Negro from The Canary Islands. He described it as "heavy but not too much". That's the sum total of my interaction with him. He never asked about the wines I enjoy, never offered any wines that might complement the meal. He was as "unsommeliery" as one could be. I ordered the Listan Negro and hoped for the best. To my chagrin, mediocre is the Best word I could use to describe it. The Sommelier is supposed to bring life to the wine list, which is only a paper effigy of the complex list of wines chosen for a restaurant. The wine list cannot stand on its own. If it could then why hire a sommelier? I had intended to order two bottles that night, but the four of us barely finished one. We wanted the night to end and I didn't want to contribute anymore money to this culinary disaster. In the end, I sincerely hope the chef reads this review and assesses the multitude of poor reviews his restaurant has received. Changes are needed. Michelin stars are ephemeral and he may just find that his star falls from the sky one day. read more

My favorite dishes were the cold beet root soup, shrimp carpaccio with seaweed emulsion, and hake with snow peas. Very reasonable price for the quality. Reservations are a must, I would recommend about a month in advance to make sure you get it. The choices are a short (€ 70) or a long (€ 90) menu. I went with the long menu (13 dishes) and wine pairing (only € 35!). It was all of excellent quality. This place has a well deserved Michelin star, the only one in Sevilla at this time. Decent food, reasonable priced. Just the rhythm is way too slow. We were waiting for long time between meals, which elongated the o1-hour meal into 2.5 hours. We almost fall in sleep while waiting. Abantal could be Sevilla's version of New York's Le Bernardin: excellent on every level, from service to ambiance to food and wine. The menu while we were there was seafood-focused (though they offered other things) and I especially enjoyed the "paella" with cod -- the best rice dish I had during two weeks in Spain. The sommelier recommended a wine that paired nicely with all courses, which wasn't easy because one of us was eating meat and the other seafood. The dining room deserves special mention -- the tables are spaced apart far enough that you can't overhear others' conversations, yet it doesn't feel too spare or overly minimalist. The acoustics are perfect too. Equally suitable for groups of friends or a couples night. Definitely the culinary highlight of Sevilla for us! read more

We had the tasting menu. For a tasting menu, the portions were larger than I expected, so it was a lot of food. Also the price for the tasting menu was quite reasonable at 65 Euros. There were a few stand out dishes, but most were good, not great especially for a Michelin starred restaurant.
