Please read the negative reviews carefully before adopting through Abbey Cats. The patterns are too consistent to ignore. Multiple people have raised concerns about transparency, medical disclosure, and aggressive communication when questioned. Rescue work is hard, but intimidation and dishonesty should never be normalized. I just had a zoom call with these people. They suck. When I asked to see the kitten, the foster grabbed it by the neck and held it in the air. Idk if that harms them, but sure its a nasty way to treat them. Also she was feeding these kittens adult cat food. They wanted me to do a house tour before anything. I wanted to know what is involved in the house tour, when this foster Shauna interrupted rudely saying shes not comfortable and left the chat. I dont know who the hell you are and you want to snoop around my house?? Im very glad I did not let them. Not only that, in their contract they state they will come to your house after the cats are adopted to see how they are doing. Seriously?? I understand they want to make sure their cats go to a good home, but they are being way too intrusive. There are smart ways to accomplish that. I see the foster runs the show. This agency is very intrusive beyond what is acceptable. What is your job, what is your income, are you a Canadian resident, what is your home like, suggestion of a conference Zoom meeting with 16 people from their side for approval or disapproval. After approval, money upfront, direct payment to the company account, no credit cards. Showing your home bit by bit during the zoom meeting. Go to Peterborough to meet the fosters and the cats if approved, the company is located in Mississauga listed for the Greater Toronto Area. It was unbelievable and reading a couple of your reviews I also realize that they do not address the health of the animal or their ailments. At the Toronto Humane Society, the cats are neutered or spayed, they have their vaccinations and you get a complete health history, with proper health restored if the cats are surrendered with health problems, even very serious health problems. read more

Caring organization -- they really try to match a cat to the right situation, and get to the know the cat before adopting out. However, this organization does give cats minimum veterinary care - often no vaccinations, and many of their cats never see a vet aside from spay/neuter. If you can help, perhaps donations would allow them to do a better job in this respect. They sometimes keep cats with communicable diseases like FIV or feline herpes with other cats that don't have these diseases (without vaccinating them) while in foster care, likely due to necessity. This is the only reason, I am not giving them a 5 star rating. I adopted my foster cat who had health problems costing $1000s in vet bills (dental work). We didn't know her teeth were so bad until I took her to see my vet a week after adoption! They did offer to take her back at that time, but of course she was already considered family and I just couldn't. She is a sweet cat, one of the most gentle I've had. Because I had fostered for them and she was older, they were kind enough to waive the adoption fee. I have no regrets and love her dearly. At the same time, my best advice to you is to be practical when adopting -- get a thorough medical history and request medical records. You need to know what expenses you are getting yourself into (and that you can afford the cat during a pandemic) before you fall in love with your new family member. This is the responsible thing to do for both you and the cat. Very kind people who are doing their best in the pandemic. They will do an excellent job of screening you, and you need to also screen the pet you are getting. read more

I fostered 6 kittens with Abbey Cats, since I was new to Canada and work was remote (thank you pandemic) these kittens were my only real friends. 5 of them were unvaccinated brothers of the same litter, and the 6th was a vaccinated kitten that we got from another agency (Lyra). Two were adopted out, still unvaccinated. The first of my remaining kittens fell sick and then died in the examination room at the vet, but I heard nothing about a necropsy, and the other kittens weren't examined or treated in case he had something contagious. Then the adopter contacted us to let us know the brothers she had adopted were sick, diagnosed with the extremely contagious and deadly panleukopenia virus (which has a standard vaccine). She later reported that one kitten died. No one from the agency replied. On Thanksgiving weekend, the second kitten slowly declined. No one answered my calls or texts. They did finally reply coldly to my emails, offering no medical care, instructing me to witness the kitten die right in my own home, and get him cremated myself. (I hope you're in a happier place River). I was told to "bring the body to an animal shelter for cremation". Imagine putting your best friend in a garbage bag at 2am on Thanksgiving day. The final brother got sick, and we were granted a brief visit with the vet. I knew he needed to be in ICU, but instead he was sent home with me, where he passed away as well. Lyra helped get me through the sadness, she started purring as soon as I woke up, she followed me around all day and generally made me feel like the world wasn't so bad. I tried getting her a booster shot since it was recommended if a young kitten got exposed to the virus, yet again, I was ghosted. No reply on phone or email. They took her away to spay her, didn't tell me that they will organize the adoption right after, and denied me a chance to say goodbye. Please, do not help fund this agency that treats kittens as objects. Please pay your adoption fee to an organization that vaccinates and vets their animals. Please support an agency that has some humanity. read more

HEALTH HAZARD- Cats aren't vaccinated. I would recommend adopting with caution. They do take in feral pregnant cats and the kittens aren't vaccinated against Rabies, feline distemper etc. If any one of these feral animals is diseased it could lead to an unmanageable health situation among the hundreds of other kittens that interact with core volunteers. Not to mention, rabies vaccination is LEGALLY REQUIRED in Ontario. read more

My partner applied to adopt a kitten from Abbey Cat Adoptions and received a phone interview which included a brief question about whether he would consider declawing a cat. My partner responded that once a previous cat that he had owned had punctured his thumb with a claw, but he still would not have a cat declawed. He said that he knew of people who declawed their cats but that did not mean that he would ever do that. My partner had a special feline nail clipper from his former cat that he would use to gently round the end of a claw, but not cut it off, and he always made sure that there was a scratching post was available. The interviewer was a trainee adoption counsellor who did not seem interested in his answer to the question in the least and did not appear to even be paying attention. Selective hearing. My partner received an email rejecting his application to adopt saying, "we need to make sure the potential adopter hasn't had (or will have) intentions to declaw.". They even attached an article on the problems of declawing a cat to his rejection email. My partner knows the negative ramifications of declawing a cat which is why he said that he would never have a cat declawed. This girl would not and did not even listen to what he said. Like I said, selective hearing. She only heard what she wanted to hear and the people in charge decided that he was unfit to adopt from them ever and that another rescue would be able to help him. If they were so concerned that my partner would declaw a cat why would they say that they were "sure" that another cat rescue could help him. Why would they even try to encourage him to adopt elsewhere? That makes no sense. My partner is the most caring and kind individual with a deep love for animals and their well-being as am I. He has had quite a few cats in his lifetime, none of which were ever declawed, and I have had quite a few dogs and horses. These animals were always put first as far as care and love, whether it had to do with physical well being, medical issues, feeding, training, socialization, and so on. Stay away from Abbey Cat Adoptions. They are a waste of time. They don't listen. They have a hidden agenda. I have read many reviews from people who have adopted from them saying that they are a scam, that they take people's money and don't even vaccinate the kittens. This from an organization that claims to be so concerned about the declawing of cats by someone who would never declaw a cat. A complete contradiction. read more

I am very impressed this professional & reliable agency. It seems to be the only adoption agency in the Toronto area that does not neuter its kittens too young. Other agencies often spay their kittens before their growth hormones have kicked in. All the reliable veterinarians I contacted recommend that kittens be neutered when they are 6 months old. This does not mean that Abbey Cat Adoptions does not want to curb the appalling growth of the cat population, a situation often leading to animal abuse. I filled out a very detailed application for a cat which was listed as up for adoption. The next morning a lady called me from Abbey Cats, I sensed a 'coldness' right away. Strangely, she did not say anything, so I rambled on about how much I loved the cat, how it would fit in with my other three cats, that I lived on a farm, which I ran by myself, and so on. Finally without saying anything significant, the lady was going off the line......I said 'just a minute, is the cat still available? I sense someone else is interested?' Right on, she said, there is an appointment tonight! Well, why didn't she just explain that upfront. I feel I was discriminated against because of my age, retired.....I know it......it was very disrespectful. read more

My experience with Abbey Cat is entirely different than the other reviewers. I adopted a cat from them three weeks ago and every step was very professional. After submitting my application, I was screened by a really careful representative on the phone and then met another representative of Abbey Cats at the foster home. Their contract and the review of it and the vet records were all thorough, including instructions for continuing with the deworming medication (given as a preventative measure). Perhaps they have changed their approach since the previous reviewers' experience as I would highly recommend them for someone looking to adopt a cat or kitten. read more

I agree with the previous reviewer. They don't check the cat's health before putting it into your home. You can call and email as much as you want, but no one gets back to you. If they were transparent up-front and let you know there are risks then I could give them a pass. They put you through a rigorous process to get a cat, but then go silent after the cat is yours. If you are interested in a cat or kitten, I would personally advise that you look elsewhere. Abbey Cats will thoroughly screen you, and that's great, but they do not offer the same transparency to you, and are not always honest about their cats or kittens. I was a foster for them, and they assured me several times before I officially agreed to foster that they would never put an unhealthy or FIV/FeLV positive cat in my home, as I already had two senior kitties of my own, and take their health very seriously. They dropped off a clearly feral and highly traumatized mother cat and her two kittens, while assuring me that they were just "shy strays." The mother cat bit my spouse very soon after arrival, and my spouse got a nasty infection, despite proper wound care, and had to receive medical treatment. It wasn't a huge deal to us, but we later found out that the mother had never even been vaccinated against rabies, or anything, nor checked by a vet, so that could've been a far bigger risk than we had originally assumed. We fostered two other lovely kittens from them, and they were adopted from our home. They then asked us to foster two "friendly and sociable" kittens to help build the confidence of the two feral kittens in our care, wanting us to put them all in together. Those kittens arrived very clearly sick and parasite ridden, and were not at all sociable to other cats. We addressed the condition of the kittens via email with Abbey Cats, and expressed our concerns about the two kittens health, and were told that they never vet check cats or kittens in their care, as it is "cost prohibitive," unless the kittens or cats are very obviously sick, and they did not offer to vet check these two kittens, who were very obviously sick. We also found out via their website (not from them) that the two sick kittens came from a feral mother in a feral colony, and thus were exposed to all manner of infectious disease. We ended up putting our own cats at risk because Abbey Cats was dishonest with us and not transparent about their policies, despite us double and triple verifying with them before even being involved. This is unacceptable. Please be very careful about fostering or adopting from them, especially if you already have pets at home. read more
