A charming place for wine and small bites, Abbot's Passage Winery and Mercantile is the perfect place if you plan to make many stops in Sonoma's wine country. Located on Madrone Road which bisects Arnold Drive and the Sonoma Highway, both of which serve as parallel paths to a multitude of other wineries, Abbot's Passage Winery and Mercantile comes from the team that also created the Gundlach Bundschu legacy of wines. Credit goes to owner and vinter, Katie Bundschu, who as the first female winemaker in six generations of her family-owned winery, with Abbot's Passage Winery and Mercantile she wanted to honor the women who came before her thanks to their Rhone-inspired, blended wines that are sourced from both throughout Sonoma County and right there on their estate along Madrone Road. What brought a friend and I here on a recent weekend of tasting was the fact that Abbot's Passage Winery was participating in a new promotion that many Sonoma County wineries were taking part in over the course of a month in which they offer three pours of their signature wines for only fifteen dollars. No other purchases were required and no other upselling was featured in this promotion, which made the decision easy for a friend and I to select Abbot's Passage Winery as our first stop on our day-long wine tasting journey. Reservations through their website were very easy to make, and checking in at their front desk was a pleasant experience. What caught both of us off guard was the fact that their wine tasting room and mercantile was bustling with people enjoying their time indoors sipping wines and feasting on platters of charcuteries and cheeses despite it only being 11 in the morning. With our reservations we were able to select a table for two as we enjoyed our first pour, which was a nice glass of their sparkling Sadie Cremant Rosé, which was a combination of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, and was a delightful way to start our tasting. Tucker, our tasting room associate, then poured us their 2023 Lupine Rosé, which was grown right there on their estate and served as an example of their unique way to dry their Zinfandel vines here, as they have learned that sometimes vines can thrive in more stressful environments. A nice poolside wine, with notes of citrus and berries, this wine was a highlight of our afternoon tasting. From there, we were served their 2022 Spirit Rock, which was a Rhone blend of Grenache, Mourvédre, Cinsault and Counoise. Sourced out of Mendocino County, Tucker shared a story of how the original vines were eaten by a bear so they had to replant everything, as this is a rare wine that they proudly served chilled, and suggested to be paired with Mediterranean cuisine. Thanks to the notes of baking spices and a cherry scent on the nose, they consider this wine the perfect Thanksgiving wine. With amazing service and a great atmosphere, my friend and I had a wonderful time taking in the sights and the tastes of the wines at Abbot's Passage Winery and Mercantile. As we learned they only moved in here a couple of years ago after many years in a tasting room along the square in downtown Sonoma. This is the perfect place to enjoy wine with friends and family, we saw many children and dogs lounging around, enjoying their nonalcoholic drinks such as lemonade and Shirley Temples while their parents drank to their heart's content. Their tasting platters which ranged from grazing boards to hummus and feta all looked amazing, but were on the more pricier side for us, but to each their own as everyone seemed to enjoy themselves while sipping and pairing. With this special deal of fifteen dollars a person we enjoyed our brief time at Abbot's Passage Winery and Mercantile and promised ourselves that one day, we would be back for more enjoyment here.
We've been members at Gundlach Bundschu for a bit and recently discovered they had a sister winery, Abbot's Passage so this past weekend, we had a group of 6 and 3 dogs go up to see what it was all about. TLDR, its absolutely wonderful. The property itself is huge and has tons of seating, beautiful trees changing colors, outdoor corn hole if you want and even board games inside. They are very dog-friendly and even brought multiple treats and water bowls for our little guys. Martha was a great host, keeping things light, but really showing her passion. The wines were very good too with some really different ones stealing the show. The Sightline and Redshift were group favorites as was the Spirit rock. We even moved inside and grabbed a couple bottles just to enjoy there because we were having such a great time. They really have something special at Abbot's Passage and you should check it out if you have the chance!
what a fun find! visited AP for one of their Saturdaze events where they had baby goats, bunnies, a snack stand pop up, and of course tastings. the property was gorgeous, such a great area for a relaxing day with family or friends. the staff was also very welcoming, and went over all their favorite wines, and the history of AP. will definitely be back with more friends!
The estate and pictures speak for themselves! Delicious wines, fun pairings, and staff that is passionate about education. I was thrilled to return here after a friend suggested we meet for the brunch pairing. It's been the winery I've most recently suggested to all of my friends due to my great experience! I was totally thrown off at the delicious coffee, due to the brunch pairing we enjoyed in the morning, an iced coffee sounded like it would hit the spot - it did! I was bummed that they were all out of the orange wine that I had wished I could take home, oh well, another reason to return! My reason for four stars? Pricing. A bit out of reach to go here as much as I'd like, or I would be returning frequently!
Today was my first visit and it was ok. My friends and I were seated promptly. The location is beautiful. Normally there wouldn't be too much traffic but the main street is a detour during construction so that takes away a bit from the peacefulness of the location. We got a charcuterie board and some ice cream. The food took so long to get and they forgot to bring one of our desserts. The food was delicious but skip the ice cream sandwiches. It tasted icy and stale. As our tasting progressed, our service got worse. Very attentive at first and towards the end we had to look for someone to help us. Even when we told them we were in a hurry there wasn't any sense of urgency. Customer service needs a bit improvement as they were not busy yet everything took a long time. The wine... it was ok. Nothing too outstanding or exceptional about it.
I'm not really a wine club member kind of gal but this place makes me want to reconsider that stance. Love the vibe, friendly staff, clean property with beautiful boho embellishments. We went on a special event day, sheep and goats were on site to be petted along with brunch bites. So we didn't get the full tasting experience but we did try a few of the wines. All delicious, interesting blends that they work with. I'm interested to go back since they have a Cab Franc/Malbec blend. It was a beautiful afternoon on the property with lovely grounds. I like that tasting benefits would exist between this spot and their sister property, always a plus. I'll have to get back to try a formal tasting sooner than later.
Found this place as we were staying in an airbnb around the corner and I'm so glad we did! Loved hearing about the female winemaker and choosing to do a lot of blends with interesting varietals. I feel like I learned a lot! our host was so friendly and knowledgeable, she really made the experience. we even got a taste of their rosé as we were celebrating my birthday! cute things in the mercantile as well, overall loved the entire vibe. and you can reserve shuffleboard courts and do a tasting! I can't wait to come back
A girlfriend and I came here back in July for a girl's weekend trip and this was one of the recommended wineries by our Airbnb host. It's a gorgeous location! We got here about 10 mins earlier than our reservation tasting time so we were able to walk around and browse their shop and their outdoor area. As soon as we checked in, we were given a complimentary glass to sip as we waited. They had just 1 charcuterie board on their menu, and a handful of dessert items. So, I wouldn't come here with an empty stomach. The charcuterie board was beautiful and delicious, but fair warning it was pretty pricey! The most expensive one we've seen, but we wanted something to snack on. Their selection for the tasting was wonderful and our host was amazing. She was super friendly and warm, and was able to change some items based on our preferences. I did want to take a bottle home, but of course the one I really wanted was available to members only. And I didn't want to join, so went home empty handed. We still had a great time and would recommend this beautiful place to people visiting the area!
This was such a great find. Beautiful place. Family and pet friendly though we left ours at home. We walked around just to see the property and it was gorgeous. Service was great! Tucker was very knowledgeable, friendly, and great service. A great spot, especially trying to stay away from the Napa crowds. Atmosphere and wine were great! It is a great place to just hang out and enjoy some good wine and company, whether with a group or a date!
Came with a few friends for their brunch flight. The winery is lovely with aesthetic decor and friendly staff. The wine flight we got with brunch did not include any red wines, so it's only a good option if you like whites/roses. The brunch flight includes 4 wines and 1 cocktail. Foodwise, we had a quiche which was very fluffy as well as a tart and a strawberry. If I'm being honest, the food was just OK and wasn't enough food to be considered a real meal. If I came back, I wouldn't get the brunch again and would only stick with the wines. Once we finished our food, we were able to take our cocktail and walk around the vineyard. There was also a cute adoption event going on so we got to play with some puppies! Overall, it was a good experience.
As one of the wineries listed under SF Chronicle's Top 25 Wineries to Visit, I am sad to say I was quite disappointed by their wines in comparison to Auteur and Saintsbury. I think maybe if we had started our tasting there I might have had a different opinion. Maybe Rhone style wines aren't for me.... However I do agree with other Yelpers that the space is beautiful! We arrived 45 min early and since it wasn't a busy day we were seated immediately outside in the shade. We had 5 tastings and then two additional pours as a bonus. We started off with a rose that was a bit too harsh and tart. Then we had a couple blends which were underwhelming. The bonus round of pours was the Makeshift wine which we did enjoy but didn't feel it was worth $30. The last drink was an aperitif consisting of Sightline with sparkling water and orange flavoring. That was a refreshing ending! Their service was friendly. Tasting was $40/person. We did not end up purchasing any wines there. We were told that they had established the winery about a year ago. Maybe with time they will be able to craft better wines in the future, but I think the competition is tough in the area when there are many other better places to go to.
We went here because it looks like their vibe was super chill on Instagram. We went on a Sunday and there wasn't that many people but they have a time limit on their table (90mins). So we felt a little rushed. Another reason why we went here is they said on the phone that they offer military discount. When we got there, they said they did not. I felt like there was some misunderstanding there. It seems like they're a new winery so they were not super organized and still trying to figure things out. We got the tasting with the board. The Tasting is $50/person and additional $40 for the board. You have to pay the $25 ahead of time to reserve. The board was small and it's your typical charcuterie board. The ingredients are fresh from the vineyard as well or local. Not sure if I'll come back.
The winery is so pretty! Love the space and they now do BYO picnic style so you can bring family, food and enjoy their wine. Tucker was fantastic and helped us with everything from our very first step in. I learned so much about their wines and process! While their wines won't be my favorite of all time, I'd be back when I'm in town for a girls weekend or just because! We did the standard flight and not the premium version. Obsessed!! Can't say enough good things about this winery. We reserved the shuffleboard social and felt it was reasonably priced & were able to order extra bottles to the table. So fun and different than a normal winery just doing a tasting. read more

We had a great time here. We made resos for the field blend experience. It was a warm day so our outdoor reservations were changed to inside which was nice. We enjoyed the tasting very much. They have excellent wines. We also purchased their charcuterie platter which was perfect. Our server was awesome. We would of liked to explore the vineyard a bit more but it was too hot. We did leave w/some bottles. Great way to end our day. read more

Loved Abbot's Passage to pieces! This adorable tasting room and supply store is located just steps away from Downtown Sonoma Plaza. Stopped by for a tasting with the ladies, and we had such a fun time. Abbot's Passage is the latest project from Katie Bundschu, owner of the grand Gundlach Bundschu Winery. The wines are truly exquisite. We tasted three wines from their tasting menu including their Rosé, Rhône red blend, and their Chenin Blanc. Let me tell you, that ALL of their wines were total knockouts! The Rosé had the most refreshing floral notes. It was so light and crisp. The Chenin Blanc/Verdejo blend was like buttah! It was so smooth and delicious. A great summertime wine for sure! If you know me, you know that I'm a red wine gal until the day that I die! Their Rhône red blend just sang to my palate in sweet harmony. I don't have much experience with Rhône varietals, this was one of the most balanced red blends that I've tasted! The aromas were so wonderful. Those dark berries, that pepper, the subtle earthiness. It all melded together like a dream. The hosts were extremely informative and so gracious. I live for an intimate tasting experience, and at Abbot's, you'll get just that. The setting is so intimate and cozy. It'll make you fall in love with it instantly. Aside from tastings, Abbot's is also a hub for wine tasting supplies and trinkets. There's an upstairs room where wine making classes are conducted. They are truly a jack of all trades here! I'm so excited to have experienced the magic that is Abbot's Passage. If you're passing through town and are looking for something fun to do, stop by Abbot's and enjoy your stay! read more
WINE Absolutely fantastic. We are so glad we found this gem! The wine is delectable. We had the flight and had a couple of favorites. It's a good variety and we were very satisfied. SERVICE Our server was very kind and attentive! They were very knowledgeable and had a lot of interesting things to share with us about the wine we were drinking, and about the family history of the winery itself. They also brought us an extra surprise drink at the end with a small sweet treat! Everyone here was very kind! FOOD They also have food which is a HUGE plus for a winery! And the food is delectable. The boards had a lot of care put into it and it showed. Definitely get the board and the bread! There's something that everyone will enjoy. AMBIANCE The seating is paradise. The seating is very comfortable and the view is great! Vines surround you in the seating area and it's quite beautiful. We were also able to walk out and explore near the other fields too. SEATING You can make a reservation, but I believe they may have capacity for walk-ins as well, as there were some empty tables. OVERALL Can't wait to come back! The staff is kind, the food and wine are excellent, and it's a lovely estate. I could literally sit there all day with a bottle of wine and their delicious food. read more

Our visit to Abbot's Passage Winery was a great way to spend an afternoon. We had a secluded seating area with a bunch of heat lamps surrounding us. (They even offered to bring more as it was a bit chilly). The antibacterial cucumber spray they provide smells so fresh and is not sticky. They offer olives and nuts to start. In addition to our tasting, we ordered the charcuterie platter and popcorn which were really good. Great service and our waiter did a great job of explaining all the wines. read more
Stopped in on a recommendation from a chef/cookbook author I follow on instagram, and so glad we did. It was also on our way between Healdsburg and Napa, so a perfect spot to stop. The winery if fairly new, and the grounds are beautiful (from what we could tell- we were there on a very rainy day). We had a 3:30 reservation for a signature tasting, were seated promptly when we arrived and began our tasting almost immediately. Our server was extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the wines. We definitely liked their white wines better than the reds, but we enjoyed tasting everything that was offered. Our favorite (which we also took home) was the 2021 Sightline. We tried both the 2021 and 2020, and while both were good we preferred the 2021. We also paired the grazing board, which had so many interesting items (chocolate covered cherries, white bean dip, pickled veggies) in addition to cheese and crackers. Checked out Abbot's Passage Winery And Mercantile on Thursday afternoon. While I was not all that impressed with the wine, I did admire the beautiful property and believe they may just need time to get their full catalog of wines up to par. Quality: Abbot's Passage Winery And Mercantile has a lovely space, but I just was not crazy about their wines. My Tasting Flight included Redshift 2020, Sightline 2020, Sunblink 2019, Makeshift 2018, Traverse 2018, Points Unknown 2016, and a Shrub Cocktail. The wines are all blends from grapes across the area, with the property only producing a small number of what is used. The standout from the bunch is Points Unknown 2016, their signature wine, a mix of grenache, mourvedre, and syrah. A well balanced and tasty wine, it gave me the impression that more than anything this winery needs time. The rest of the group was fairly disappointing, especially the whites. Though on a warm day, the Shrub Cocktail at the end was a nice treat. Also, skip the Seasoned Popcorn, it is not worth it. Quantity: The Tasting Flight came with six pours of wine as well as a Shrub Cocktail. Value: $40 for a Tasting Flight. $8 for the Seasoned Popcorn. Ambiance: Abbot's Passage Winery And Mercantile is a beautiful winery located in the Glen Ellen area of Sonoma. The buildings around the property are some of the oldest in the area, and add a distinct style to the winery. They have a nice outdoor tasting space, which receives some natural shade from trees near the grapes, with some added umbrellas to be safe. The indoor tasting room is large, and set up to do much more once things shift back indoors. They also have an adjacent shop and an area that appears to be arranged for full meals paired with wine. They encourage guests to walk around the property and even during the dry season, it is a lovely place to stroll. Crowd: There were four other tables of guests including one larger bachelorette early in the day. It seemed like a location that will always have a few guests, but never fill up completely. Service: They seemed a little out of sorts when I first arrived without a reservation, but the reservation system did not allow for reservations for single individuals. However, I was seated shortly and the woman who led me through my tasting could not have been kinder. Parking: Large parking lot at the front of the property. read more

We visited on a quiet Thursday morning after the 4th of July, Nicole took excellent care of us, sat with us and shared with us detailed information which we enjoyed. You can tell she is passionate about her job, is knowledgeable and so welcoming! Her sweet personality and attention to our tasting added to the whole experience! The wines are Rhône style blends (including field blends) delicious wines, beautiful tasting room and outdoor patio - we choose to sit inside as it was cool out but I'd like to go back and sit on patio and try some food they offer. The story of the winery and female wine winemaker/owner was cool to learn about. Highly recommend at stop here when in Sonoma area. read more

We actually arrived to Abbot's Passage by mistake at their closing time. A different winery that we used to love was located here, but they moved and were quite unresponsive. However, we arrived to Abbot's Passage and they were SO accommodating. Their hospitality was amazing and they were so understanding. They brought us a pour of wine while we waited for our ride, and even asked if we needed water. We're excited to come back knowing that it's now Abbot's Passage when we can actually enjoy some time here! read more
What a cool and hip place tucked in a small alleway right off the square. I can honestly say that I have never heard of Abbot's Passage Supply until a few weeks ago, which I feel bad about now! I was lucky enough to attend one of their workshops (Bitters making class), hosted by Bitter Girl Bitters and enjoy the hospitality that Abbot's Passage supplied. The inside of the small remodeled barn was warm and cozy, which was key on a cold November day! Their wine tasting list is quite diverse with some blends and varietals that are hard to find in the valley. The tasting itself is either a three taste at $25 or four taste at $30, which is about the norm nowadays for a lot of tasting rooms. The winemaker stems from the famous Bundschu family in the town, so she definitely knows what she is doing alongside the tasty wine she produces. If I had to pick a few that had me sold per se, I would quickly choose the Chenin Blanc/Verdejo and the Moon Mountain cab. Both were quite unique, but easily won me over in the end! Alongside the tasting, Abbot's offers local handcrafted jewelry, lotions, perfume/cologne, cookware, clothing, etc. Almost everything is sourced locally giving love to the hard working mom and pop shops around the county. While it may not be the cheapest items to purchase, you are paying for quality more than anything, so I guess the old saying of you get what you pay for makes sense in this scenario. Last but not least, the staff are extremely nice and willing to answer any questions thrown their way. I'd say take a gander at one of their workshops that are coming up or drop in for a tasting to experience what treats they offers. read more

We booked the Field Table experience via Tock, and I have to say it was amazing. We got seated in the middle of the old vineyards at a very cosy table setting. We were offered a local artisanal hand sanitizer spray, some parmesan popcorn and some nuts to start. We did a wine tasting of several wines (both white and red), accompanied by some very well crafted food, all made with local seasonal products. I am very impressed with their chef, her creativity and execution. The service was amazing and the sommelier spent a lot of time explaining the wines and the dishes. We ended up buying some wine and registering for their wine club too. We are looking forward to visiting again in the future, and we highly recommend this place to all foodies and wine aficionados. read more

We loved loved loved our time Abbot's Passage, and knew instantly we would become members. Our new favorite place! Their seating area is quiet, well-designed, and beautiful. Their wines are lovely and their staff are very knowledgeable and spend a lot of time with you. We definitely felt welcomed, and huge shoutout to Josh for making us feel like family. Their food is also extremely excellent. Best charcuterie board around with beautiful, seasonal ingredients and serving pieces. And don't forget to stop into their mercantile for more design goodness. read more
