Lasseter Family Winery was the third and final stop on our Platypus Wine Tour. I highly recommend Platypus Wine Tours: https://www.yelp.com/biz/platypus-wine-tours-napa. Our first two stops were Loxton Cellars and Mayo Family Winery. Lasseter, Loxton, and Mayo are all located in Glen Ellen. I enjoyed our wine tasting experiences at all three places. Lasseter Family Winery was by far the most different of the three because it was the biggest, most modern and "luxurious," backed by the most money, and it felt the most corporate/commercialized. Lasseter Family Winery is owned by John and Nancy Lasseter. John is known for being a former executive at Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios, and the director of popular animated movies like Toy Story (1995), A Bug's Life (1998), and Cars (2006). In this sense, the Lasseter Family Winery reminds me of another Sonoma County winery, Francis Ford Coppola Winery in Geyersville. It's cool, but as my friends and I discussed during our visit here, these types of wineries struck us as when rich guys get enough money to open their own winery "for fun." The other wineries, Loxton in particular, are much smaller "mom and pop" businesses. They're more genuine labors of love. This one, and others like it, feel completely different. I think one of the guys in our group liked Lasseter the best. He bought several bottles. My favorite from this particular tour was Loxton, but Lasseter was good too. I liked Lasseter better than Mayo. We visited Lasseter on an ordinary Friday around 2:30pm and stayed for about two hours, maybe a little longer. It wasn't very busy during our stay. Alex was our guide and he was great. He explained everything well and had a good sense of humor. In terms of presentation and details (e.g., tasting sheet, menu, order form), Lasseter was among the best I've seen. High-quality materials, well-designed, etc. Our tasting menu was customized and printed just for our group of six. Here's what we had (all Sonoma Valley estate wines, priced per 750 mL): * 2021 Enjoue ($35) * 2020 Voila ($55) * 2016 Chemin de Fer ($56) * 2016 Paysage ($62) * 2015 Amoureux ($64) Our order form had seven additional wines including a couple non-estate wines (12 total). Along with the five listed above, Alex brought one or two extra wines for us to try. By this point in the day, I was 17+ wine tastings in and don't remember much. I'm a lightweight and not a wine connoisseur, but I do like wine, especially with a nice meal. I don't recall any one of Lasseter's wines standing out from the others. I just remember each one tasted high-quality and delicious. We ordered some cheese and charcuterie boards to go with our tasting and they were tasty as well. Something else we thought was neat was the wine label artwork by Dennis Ziemienski. His designs are fun and colorful. His paintings were on display inside the main building and there was merchandise featuring his artwork that was available for purchase. When we visited, the weather was perfect (sunny and in the 60s) and the grounds and facilities were beautiful. Really nice. We walked around a bit, but weren't able to get far as the road heading south from the main building was closed off. Lasseter Family Winery is a trifecta of beauty, history, and tranquility.  Talk about a hidden gem of a winery.  I won't repeat what others have stated about being lost. Upon arrival, we were greeted with glasses of Enjoué, a French word meaning "cheerful; joyful; lighthearted," capturing the spirit of their family experiences in France.  Their wines are modeled after European blends via family trips to Europe.  It was a picture-perfect day to enjoy this delightful rosé.   We explored a behind-the-scenes tour of their Bordeaux inspired wines. There's an upstairs tasting room to look around and check out their tank room, in addition to purchasing any wines.  I fell in love with "Amoureux" and purchased a bottle.  I also fell in love with the tank room, padded with love ~ ooh la la.  I see why it's called the "Crush Pad", sooooooooo rad! We chose Lasseter based on its exemplary Yelp reviews (thanks fellow Yelpers!) and had a fantastic visit! Renee was our hostess for the entire ~2 hour experience and we thoroughly enjoyed learning about winemaking and hearing her stories. The wines were also fantastic and were paired with excellent cheeses and other snacks. We didn't intend to buy any wines but ended us ordering 6 bottles of their Inattendu (primarily Syrah red blend). Highly recommend their tour and tasting! read more

What an incredible secret find off the beaten path. Delicious wine worth the stop if you can get a reservation. Loved their Rose and the day before coming I mentioned that I didn't like Rose wine. Lovely experience that we had here with Audrey as our Wine Educator. The property is very private feeling as you go into a gate in order to do the tasting. Coming up from Southern California, we were not previously familiar with Lasseter but were all impressed with each of the wines and the background and story on how and why they were made. It seemed that Audrey was really in touch with our preferences and seemed very passionate and just so knowledgable about all of the products. This winery is tucked away behind some gates. I thought I was lost when I drove by a school, but after getting buzzed in and passing the gates revealed such a pretty area that feels so relaxing. We love their wines and how they try to be environmentally responsible. They specialize in blends, so no straight cabs or anything here. Review time! I would like to say that I've done my fair share of wine tasting and winery tours, but this one takes the cake. The main reason we came here is because this places is owned by Jon Lasseter and his wife Nancy. In case you don't know who John is, he's pretty much the brains behind everything Pixar related. He's also the head of Disney Animation currently. We found out he had a winery, so we made reservations and off we went to Glen Ellen. First we were a bit late, but the the group waited for us, and the host, Steven was fantastic. Very articulate and knowledgeable about pretty much every facet of this the place. I truly learned a lot about the process of wine making and the history of this particular winery because of him. He was very generous with the pours as well and was willing to give even more to those interested. Nice! Also included in the package is a cheese plate with some amazing cheese! I'm a cheese nut, so I'll always welcome some great cheese! As for the wines? Fantastic. They had a French feel, and I guess that's what was intended and it worked out perfectly. The Lasseter's hired the right people for pretty much everything at this Winery. I try to get my reviews fair and with a little bit of criticism, but I honestly couldn't find a single fault in this place. Not a single one! Maybe I'm not looking hard enough, but I truly couldn't find a single bad thing to say about this place. Forget about Napa, go to Glen Ellen at the Lasseter Family Winery. It's honestly the best. I couldn't think of a better place to grab a glass of wine in the sun. We came here pretty tired but that changed when we were greeted by our amazing host (Richard) who filled us in on all the wines and also just had a good long conversation with in general. Each of the wines was great (even the rose which we are not usually fond of but ended up buying some here). This place is a little hidden but as long as you use google maps you should be able to find it. You also need a reservation or else they may not open the gates for you so keep that in mind. read more

A couple tips: - getting to the winery, there is no signage for the final run to the winery. Yes it is the dirt road that runs behind the school. - they are by appointment only, check them out on CellarPass So I am not a fan of wineries that do by appointment only, but I understand why many do this. The winery property, once though the gate is stunning, you feel so out in the country it is beautiful. Our wine tasting was excellent, they had put in nibbles plus they were tasting the individual varietals that went in to their blends. So you could get a before and after tasting. Lasseter exceeded our expectations more than I could have anticipated. *You need an appointment to visit this winery.* When you drive in the beautiful vineyards to the the left and tasting room to the right catch your eye immediately. As we approached the tasting room we were warmly greeted by Jackie and Richard. There was a beautiful sign with our names, welcoming us to the grounds. After beating able to take pictures and set our items down we enjoyed our first tasting and cheese pairing. They asked who Lauren was and I raised my hand. They had a special gluten free cheese and cracker made for me. I thought the was SO SO thoughtful. We proceeded to the vines, crush pad, and cellar room. It was a personal walk with great information about how the Lasseter's started their operation. We then made it back to the tasting room and sat down to a cute plate of cheese and wine tasting. They had a special gluten free plate for me, which again stood out. The wines, artwork, and attention to detail were so fabulous. Jackie and Richard made us feel so welcome and like we were worth a million bucks! We joined the wine club and look forward to coming back and enjoying the Organic, well thought out wines they have to offer. This was the warmest and most personal experience we had between Napa and Sonoma. This was by far our FAVORITE experience in Sonoma. Thank you Lasseter, Jackie, and Richard. Came here this past weekend and had a WONDERFUL experience. I am a hugeee all things Pixar/John Lasseter fan, so I've been dying to come check this place out. They have a sign out front welcoming everyone by name, which was so cute! I was pretty surprised that almost nobody on the tour knew of John Lasseter...and I'm over here like fan-girling out the whole time, but that must just mean that people come for their great wine! We had the tour and tasting with Brianna, who was clearly very knowledgeable. We walked around the vineyards and she showed us their process. We ended in a tasting room, where they have a placecard personalized with your name on it, another nice touch! All of the wines, cheese, and chocolate were all fantastic! They had some really cool merchandise for sale, and I ended up buying a bottle of the Voila white wine, a wine stopper, and some strawberry jam, which I've been eating every damn day since I left. Can I buy this stuff anywhere else?! Pixar fan or not, I highly recommend this place. All around 10/10 experience. Can't wait to come back! read more

Incredible experience. We visited several wineries in the Napa and Sonoma area, but none of them stand up to the experience we had at Lasseter. This is a small group experience and reservations are required. We were greeted at the door with our names on a whiteboard and a glass of rose. We took a short stroll through the vineyard and barrel room before sitting down in the wine room at a large table with 4 red wine and cheese pairings already prepared on the table. All of the wines were fantastic even though I'm typically more a white wine drinker than red. They also have this incredible sweet and spicy jam that was paired with one of the wines - never tasted a jam this good before. Audrey was a great host and really made us feel welcomed. We have been members of Lasseter Family Winery for several years and have visited the winery on at least five occasions. They are, hands down, our "go to" for approachable, delicious wines. Everything is either a Rhone or Bordeaux blend and is meant to be enjoyed with no fuss, decanting, or extended time in your cellar (not gonna happen at our home). The property is absolutely stunning in the Glen Ellen area (Sonoma side of the valley) and the staff is delightful. Over the years, they have expanded their tasting area to a patio experience (weather permitting), a barrel tour, or our favorite, the tasting excellently paired with local cheeses, nuts, dried fruits, and chocolate. You must have a reservation but it is absolutely worth it! Expect a fun, educational, entertaining experience. Beautiful location that has views to the surrounding vineyard covered hills. The winery building is handsome and functional. The tasting room is pretty. You can make an appointment for food & wine pairing occasion here and it would be very special indeed. I tried just two finished wines in the bottle / for sale and then several barrel tastings of the component wines that make up the French style blends. Lasseter makes no single vineyard, single grape varietal wines. In the European style all wines are blends to achieve the winemakers intention for flavor. I liked the rose'. Dry, but not austere. I've driven by here many times, but never knew that there was such a great winery tucked behind an elementary school. Don't worry, the winery is fenced. But, before I begin with the wines, the terroir, etc. I must give a history of the owner. If you know about Pixar than you know indirectly about John Lasseter. John's passion is storytelling, and Pixar was built on storytelling. Fine winemaking is also storytelling. Listen for the nuances of place, grape, time, hand, and bottle. You'll hear it. John and his wife Nancy acquired the property in 2002. They saw the potential of the place and undertook remaking a long neglected vineyard into a visionary winery. In 2010 they started production on the estate, and the following year opened the winery. But that is not where the story of their winemaking started. John and Nancy started making wine at their home in Sonoma in the 90's and giving it to their family as gifts. Their progression into world-class winemakers started with this very first effort. As I mentioned earlier, the winery is fenced and gated. It is opened by appointment only. They specialize in mainly Rhone and Bordeaux blends and a field-blended Zinfandel. The production that the winery chooses to go by is the best quality grapes. So, you have quality over quantity. Only a portion of the usable land is currently under vine, as they purposely utilize only the choicest parts for the best quality yield. They do not claim to be a biodynamic winery, but they use a lot of the best practices from that type of winemaking. They utilize owls for rodent control, cover crops for nutrient replenishment, and although they use water for a landscaping feature, are sparing in their use of excess water. When you sign up for a tour they meet you at the front of the winery. You are greeted warmly by staff and offered a class to start your journey. Your guide tells you the history and starts the story of Lasseter. He takes you outside and you start the tour in the vineyards. He shows you the features and consideration taken for the grapes and land. Then takes you down into the winery itself and into the production area. Let me stop here for a moment. Although it is a small winery (ok, small, ultra-premium in my book) the barrel room is pretty stunning. High walls, perfect lighting, artwork, and that wonderful smell of grapes, oak, and perfect humidity. That room in itself is quite an experience for the senses. Ok, moving on. While in the barrel room I had the pleasure of getting a barrel sample of their Malbec. Divine, especially when experiencing it in that room. Then we moved upstairs into a very nicely appointed conference type room, dedicated to a wonderful tasting experience. We were seated in comfortable chairs and presented with carefully considered pairing snacks for each wine. (an aside, if you are gluten-free they are happy to accommodate you, just ask.) Each wine is presented with a specific pairing and you are guided through proper tasting technique without feeling as you are being schooled, merely guided. They poured their entire offerings. All were delicious in their own right, but two spoke to me - Enjoué and Chemin De Fer. Enjoué is a dry rose of Syrah, Grenache and Mouvedrè. It is made in a classic rosé style of saignèe. There is a wonderful crispness of fruit, with strawberry and mango interweaving with pleasing acidity and a long finish. The name Enjoué means "joyous" in French. Chemin De Fer is a deep dark blend of Grenache, Mouvedrè and Syrah. What is wonderful about this wine is that it is not the big fruit bomb most GSM blends are made into locally. It is softer, approachable, with a wonderful feel. It is like wearing a nicely worn leather jacket that doesn't look it. I can enjoy this with or without food. read more

Lasseter is awesome. I'm not a white wine drinker, but their whites are great and really reasonably priced. They have an awesome tasting experience with a beautifully set table, local cheese and chocolate pairings and an explanation of how each wine was created (all blends) and named. It's creative genius John Lasseter's (Pixar), winery which is a draw. He and his wife are inspired by France and French wines, and the passion and attention to detail show in the art, labels and flavors. Update: Lasseter used to easily be at our top place. Recently at least for us there have been a number of things that start to move it over to a Napa experience (read: stuffy and less casual). The biggest used to be my note down below about bringing kids along. Ours are actually very used to wineries and well behaved, but they've now gone to allowing no kids in the tasting room where as before they made it very welcoming and almost seemed to encourage it. Their reasoning is they have so many booking months in advance. I understand the popularity, but as someone that was a big fan for so long it's clear that now they're simply looking to how many they can maximize in the door. Previous review: Having been to a number of wineries, probably over 100 in aggregate, Lasseter easily ranks up there among our favorite. The experience is top notch, usually starting with a light tour with a little of their Rose. We've had some light tour probably about 20-25 minutes each time we begin tasting there, though each time it's slightly different making it refreshing. If you're at all familiar already then you know of their connection to Disney, but it also makes for a great analogy to the experience. Their tasting experience is very guided with every detail thought out. If tasting there you'll have your wines paired with great cheeses (and our daughter was treated to a child's tasting plate of goldfish crackers and an etch a sketch to entertain her). If you are able to track and follow their events they're even more worth making it to... Their events are often great parties, with good wine and food as expected, often live music. So in short all of the joys of their great wine in a fun upbeat atmosphere. read more

Very personable experience and a lovely atmosphere. My friend and I were greeted immediately when stepping onto the property, with a friendly smile and a chilled taste of rosé. The sommelier was extremely knowledgeable and took us through details of the family's inspiration for the 5 different wines on their tasting list. The tables were plenty spread apart to adhere to covid regulations, and high-end mobile bathrooms outside just a few steps away. All staff were wearing masks and avoided touching glasses where they could. We also ordered a cheese platter to accompany our tasting, which wasn't necessarily filling, but certainly a tasty pairing. Napa is busy, bustling, and very classy. Lasseter family winery is no different, but there is much less pressure and instead you're greeted like family coming home. The vineyard is GORGEOUS, and it is immediately apparent as you walk up that there is nothing short of exemplary customer service to come. Tastings are tiny, only 8 people allowed each time and all are welcomed with their names not only on a sign outside, but printed on individualized menus when you do sit down to taste. Our tasting started in the entryway with a beautiful and light rose, perfect for any spring or summer party. Our hostess Jacque was knowledgeable and friendly, and made us feel beyond welcome. After a tour of the gorgeous estate, and learning more about how the wine here was made (very specialized, very small amounts), we made our way to the tasting room. We got to taste four wines accompanied by local treats that paired beautifully. No trip here is complete without joining the incredibly priced wine club. As we were signed up we also shopped and found our little bit of Pixar (we knew it would be there) in a beautifully created hand made puzzle we just had to have. What's not to love about this incredible place. Beautiful scenery, wonderful people, and tasty wine. Went with my brother to do a tour and tasting on a Friday. They make sure to keep the number of visitors small, so every tour feels intimate and special. HIGHLY RECOMMEND the cheese pairing with the wine tasting. Local and delicious - loved the pepper jam. Wonderful wine and proprietor, and small details and niceties like your name on the welcome sign. This is a great place to visit. read more

Beautiful property. I was not able to get an advance appointment, but luckily we were able to get in last minute. Every single staff member was very friendly and helpful. The design is fun and has character. The garden is beautiful. And of course the wine was great. You cannot get those in regular store, so it's a treat to come here to taste them. read more

This place is for everyone who loves wine and good hosts and service. Covid-19 safety rules are observed while wines are poured in with friendly manners and a beautiful smile. You are allowed to bring your picnic lunch and dine at their comfortable picnic area and enjoy their sooooo good Bordeaux or Rhone blended wines while having fun with your friends. There is no amazing place like Lasseter Family Winery. No wonder why reservation is needed. Great wine, personable hosts, good location in the middle of a vineyard.
