After a few tours of very large wineries, we ended our week in Sonoma and Napa with Schermeister and it was, undoubtedly, our favorite stop. Not only was the wine our favorite we had, but, as reported, Rob and Laura were just so welcoming and wonderful. They felt like old friends even though we had just met. Also, their tasting room is just gorgeous and in a lovely area. I whole heartedly recommend stopping in at Schermeister if they're open (they close when they sell out of wine) and I plan to come back any time I'm in Northern California.

There was a tasting menu that consisted of five wines. The two wines I enjoyed were the Checkerbloom Rosé, which after tasting became my favorite rosé, and Merlot Cuvee. During this visit I didn't purchase any wine because there was another winery we were visiting for a tasting menu. At that winery I preferred one of their red wines over the Merlot Cuvee from Deerfield. However I really loved the Checkerbloom Rosé. When I came home I ordered Checkerbloom Rosé online through Deerfield. I wasn't sure when I was going back to Deerfield. As I really like their one wine I wasn't driving to Deerfield just for the Checkerbloom Rosé. About the last couple of months I've been receiving emails from Deerfield Ranch Winery about the @Rose 2023 was soon to be sold out as it was selling for $10. I'm not going to order wine that I never tasted before. Before going to Deerfield I had to check online if the Checkerbloom Rosé was still available. Apparently it wasn't. Also the @Rose 2023 wasn't $10 anymore. On a hunch I decided to go to Deerfield. I went to Deerfield last week on a Sunday. As I entered the cave I went to the cash register. One of the workers Ben approached me. I asked him if @Rose 2023 was still $10. He answered yes. I also asked if the Checkerbloom Rosé was still available. He showed me the bottle. I decided to buy the Checkerbloom Rosé. Before buying I asked Ben if I could take a sip this rosé. It was sweet. Ben replied the @Rose 2023 is sweeter than the Checkerbloom Rosé, which is drier. I decided to buy three bottles of @Rose 2023 at $10 each. There are certain wineries that have specialties. For me during my two visits at Deerfield their rosés are better than from other wineries I've tasted.

I ended up buying a bottle of it to bring home ($35 if you're not a member). Our wine was paired with 12 spreads. All of them were delicious and some were even quite unique, like the sweet pea one! My favorites were the brie, carrot, and rhubarb spreads. Not really sure if I concluded on which spread paired the best with which wine, but they were nice snacks to munch on. If you're seated outdoors, you get a nice view of the vineyard as well as some mountains. There also looked to be some pedal powered trolley, which we saw a group doing but didn't do it ourselves.

We were first introduced to them back when they had their tasting room at Cornerstone Gardens in Sonoma. The setting there was incredibly welcoming--especially with our three young kids at the time--and between the atmosphere and the wines, we were hooked from the start. Their Lake County lineup really stands out, and the Volcanic Estate Cabernet has been a go-to in our house for years--it's always been reasonably priced and somehow overdelivers every single time we open a bottle. On the other end of the spectrum, the Half Mile is more of a special occasion wine for us, and it never disappoints. Winemaker Alex clearly knows what he's doing--his reds are fantastic across the board. The Cabernet, Petit Verdot, and Malbec from that volcanic Lake County fruit are bold, expressive, and incredibly well made. We've been wine club members for years now, which says a lot.
