When I moved to New England in 2019 I had no idea where I was going to take my then dog for vet care, so, working in the petcare field I talked with clients, scrolled through online reviews, and made spreadsheets before deciding to try out Abbott Valley Veterinary Center. I am so glad I did. From the beginning they have been a wonderful team taking care of my dog, and eventually my cat and a family members dog and cat, and now another cat of mine. They saw us through an emergency visit when my dog had been bit by an off leash dog right before they closed, through two different cancers, kidney disease, arthritis, hearing loss, and the eventual loss of three of our seniors and through it all every vet, every tech, and every receptionist has been warm, knowledgeable, accommodating, and helpful, making sure we understood all of our test results, options, steps, and outcomes and answering absolutely every question thuroughly. I started with Dr Gifford who also performed both of my dog's cancer tumor surgeries, and as her schedule changed we now see Dr Tanguay, but I have never once in seven years regretted choosing Abbott Valley. read more

Unfortunately, I have to downgrade my rating for Abbott Valley. At first it was just annoying that they would refuse to authorize an order from chewy for flea/tick preventative. Then, when my dog was hurt (not emergency room level, but "I'm concerned and want to make sure he hasn't damaged something badly", they couldn't get him in until the next month. I called and asked about pain medication, which they first said they couldn't prescribe without seeing him. When I pointed out that they said they can't see him for literally weeks, they called back with a prescription. Hours have been decreased, and staffing is clearly an issue when you can't get in for an emergent problem. We've moved to a different vet, which is disappointing after so many years of excellent service. Not sure what's happening here, but it's gone decidedly down hill. read more

I recently moved back home and my 1st priority was to find a doctor for my little baby . This place was recommended to me from someone who also owns Staffordshire terror. They were great with him very through before giving him his vaccine for Lyme disease. Really couldn't not be happier with how they treated Gronk during his visit. They did a great job on his nails. They even talked to my vet in Texas about something I'm his records. So glad I have a place to take my dog to that I know will get the best treatment. read more

The doctors at Abbott Valley led to my dog Jaxon's death. I brought my dog to the vet in February of 2024. I was told he had a trachea collapse. I went back in April, after my dog was not eating. He had diabetes so I was concerned because he needed to eat for me to give him his insulin (I was the one who caught his diabetes not the vet- that's another story). When I brought him in, I was told that he was "just being a husky" and was being picky. Mind you this dog ate everything, but again, I know how huskies can be picky, and was told the trachea collapse could be to blame, so I believed them. On July 22, my dog collapsed and was lethargic. I called and made an appt for Wednesday, July 24th. That is the day my world turned upside down. Once an X-ray was finally taken by Dr. Goff (5 months and 3 visits later), they found a mass that took up 75% of his lung. When I asked why the X-ray wasn't taken in February, his response was that they wrote down on my dogs chart that I denied an X-ray. I was in SHOCK.. I was told I didn't need one because you can't see cartilage on an X-ray. Animal hospitals in RI were full so we headed to Tufts. They told me it was either a lobectomy surgery or we could choose euthanasia. My fiancé and I would do anything to save our baby so we chose surgery without hesitation. Jax went into cardiac arrest during surgery after clipping an artery- but he made it out and was recovering remarkably well. Overnight, he formed a blood clot and we received a call from Tufts on Saturday morning to get there as soon as we could. We made it in time to see our baby for the last time, and unfortunately, Jax passed away on Saturday, July 27th. I blame this unfortunate outcome on the doctors at Abbott. DO NOT bring your fur babies to this establishment, and if you do, do your research and listen to your gut feeling, if you know something isn't right- it isn't right. If you continue to go to this establishment or decide that this is the vet for you please just be cautious and do your own research after a diagnosis. They not only misdiagnosed his lung cancer for a trachea collapse, they dismissed his diabetes when I knew something was wrong. Jaxon was only 8. Our world was shattered- this misdiagnosis cost my fiancé and I $13,000 and even worse, our babies life. I pray that at least one person reads this review and decides to bring their dog to another establishment. It took me a month to write this review because of how heart broken this experience left us but I felt like I needed to do something. I can't begin to recommend them enough. We have trusted Dr. Gifford and her staff to care for our pets for 15+ years. One of our dogs is an anxious, high energy, wiggler and is not a good patient. I have a fear aggressive rescue dog. When I called to make his appointment they advised me to call ahead when I get there so they can make arrangements to bring him into the facility without people or other dogs making him anxious. They took us right on time and without incident. Dr. Springer and the vet techs were amazing. They were understanding and knew exactly how to handle an anxious aggressive dog. Dr. Springer did the entire visit sitting on the floor petting him and making him feel comfortable. She addressed all my concerns, answered all my questions, and gave advice on training techniques. After bringing my pets here for many years and one of them having multiple surgeries, my husband and I now have a new puppy who had his first shots in Maine. I called Abbot Valley to set up an appointment for his second set of shots which we were told had to be administered in 2 weeks from the pickup date. I was told by someone at Abbot Valley that they weren't booking until the middle of September so I asked what I should do..no response. I asked again and said I was told to get the shots and now I don't know what to do so he told me to try going elsewhere. After many years and many dollars that was his solution. I called another vet who also told me the same thing about booking in September but their solution was to go to Rumford Pet in Greenville and get the second shot. I immediately set up his next appointment with them for the third shot and exam. Why Abbot Valley couldn't tell me this I don't know but this I do know, I won't be returning there. read more

I had a last minute sick appointment here tody with Dr. Gifford and her tech Deb. I consider my cat to be a *Caution* as we say in the vet community, and they were both really great with her and kept her calm. I was so surprised she did not need more restraint as my cat is an anxious animal and is often terrible for any treatments. She needed to be shaved in the back and I was happy the vet was willing to do this herself so she could check out the area and make sure it was done to her satisfaction. It's the kind of thing some doctors pass off to a couple technicians, cleaning and grooming type stuff. Also, they are next to Ice Cream Machine so that is a bonus lol. I do think the waiting room could use some decor to make it a bit warmer. The desk area itself is nice but the rest is a bit bland and the stone fountain in the room is completely out of place. They do offer some good pet products there, including some candles that are supposed to rid the room of pet smells? Interesting idea but they are a paraffin/soy mix and I think soy is a better option without the paraffin read more

If you are ever worried about leaving your pet with strangers, I urge you to come here. I'm currently in the exam room, watching my dog in the back with the techs who are doing exactly what I would be doing if I was allowed in the X-ray room with my boy. They are stroking his ears, giving him kisses & talking to him the whole time. I drive an hour to come here & I will never go anywhere else. Let me start by saying that the staff at the front desk and the techs were warm friendly and kind. I am rating this place low because of their lack of understanding when it comes to working with dogs with behavioral needs. I was very disappointed in how they handled my dog. He suffers from severe PTSD(suffered serious abuse and trauma in last home) and becomes aggressive when fearful while at the vet. Instead of supporting him and me, Dr. Gifford was incredibly rude and actually made me cry by her response to his behavior. She borderline made me feel that we needed to put him down. We have since gone to Tufts for behavior support and were reassured that his behavior is appropriate given his past. They've given us amazing training support to help him improve. It would've been nice to be able to stay with abbot as I've seen how wonderful their care for the average pet can be, but unfortunately they just don't cut it for the animals with these types of needs. read more

ive been bringing my pets here for years and have had a great experience until a few days ago. I called to have my dog seen since he was limping, I was told they had no openings for 2 weeks. I asked if I could get something for pain for my dog, again not till he could be seen in 2 weeks! I was told if I was this concerned I should take him to Tufts or Ocean State! Of course I'm concerned and wanted him to see his regular vet, but I guess they don't care about us! Just the thousands of dollars I've paid them to be my pets doctors! Best Veterinary Clinic I've ever been to! My dog is a train wreck so I'm a here on a regular basis. I usually see Dr. Mowry and he is great, he has gotten to know my dog really well after many visits so we feel very comfortable bringing him there. The other doctors and the support staff are friendly and helpful as well. We've never had a problem and never walked out with sticker shock after getting the bill. read more

I have an 8 year old retired racing greyhound and he's always well care for here. Everyone is so nice, friendly and obviously loves what they do. My dog gets along with anybody, but he loves all of the doctors and technicians here. He has had very thorough care. They were especially helpful when he dislocated his toe and had to be brought in as an emergency patient. They put everything on hold to help him and make sure he wasn't in pain. This isn't the most convenient vet to get to (it's 30 minutes from my house), but I wouldn't bring my dog anywhere else!! read more

I am always impressed by the staff at Abbott. The women at the front desk were friendly and patient, even throughout the whimpers of little furballs in the waiting room. Dr. Gifford was concise, effective, friendly, and informative. She answered all of my questions fully and (unlike many other Doctors in my experience) never seemed to be burdened by the extra time it took to ask. She treated both me and my dog, Kaya, with respect and smiles. Eric was our vet technician. What a pleasure it is to be in his presence. He truly displays a love for animals and his understanding of my dog and ability to give her comfort was magical. Three years ago I brought my dog in with an emergency. They are not my regular vet, but they (at the time) were the only open practice around who accepted care credit. They took a X-ray, and confirmed what I thought. My dog had something stuck in his bowel. Dr Gifford was upfront about how she could do the surgery, but wouldn't be able to keep him overnight. She reccomended I go to OSVS. They were friendly and courteous. Which was a big relief. read more

So my last experience with the facility was simply awful. It started off well enough and I certainly have been well treated over the years. My cat, Lucky was 17 and his health had fallen off the cliff. I spoke with the technician and tearfully made the decision to relieve him of his suffering. Thus guy was tucked against me with his head under my chin and paws over my arm, going to sleep every night. He was my best friend. I clearly and repeatedly said that I wanted him mass cremated and I wanted his paw front in ceramic . The first thing that went south, to me, was that they took him into the back room to sedate him for the euthanasia. I thought they were just prepping him. So I didn't get to hold him as he drifted to sleep. I a, traumatized to thus very day. Lastly, I got a card in the mail with just an ink print. The staff said that they were clear that mass cremation doesn't come with a ceramic print. After he was cremated. No way to go back. So two very important things to his end of life were taken from me. Something triggered me, years after this happened, to finally put this up. I gave the staff an earful back then but folks, I am just asking you to make sure you make your wishes known and get an acknowledgement in writing! I'm having a wonderful life with my new buy Potter, who was a kitten when lucky got sick. But thus is a wound that doesn't seem to ever heal. Sorry for being negative. Very helpful and upfront. My dog had a parasite and the vet told me about a local dog daycare that had infected dogs. Come to find out my neighbors dog goes there and must have caught it from him. Spoke to the owners who apologized over and over. Felt really bad for the owners as their dog caught the parasite at the daycare he attends! Love the staff here and pricing is average! read more

I love Abbott Valley Vets. They are prompt and thorough and don't keep you waiting. The staff is so friendly to me and my pets. Never over medicate and if I bring my dog there for something simple, like Bordetella, they don't charge me for the office visit, just the meds :). The same staff has been working there forever so they always know their clients very well. I believe it is very important to form a relationship with patients and pet parents, and they do just that! The 4 star rating is because they do not do small animals, like ferrets, so I have to go elsewhere. read more

I was referred to this place from a friend. It seems like overall this is a clean place and that the vets know what they are doing but I wouldn't go back unless I absolutely had to. The veterinarian I saw, was male, wanted to run several tests on my dog that was not needed. Horrible place. My friend almost lost her dog from them putting it on so many antibiotics when there was never an infection or parasite. The dog's problems was from food which she had asked repeatedly if that could have been the case for it's illness. This dog ended up at OSV and had meningitis because it's immune system was so compromised from months of constant antibiotics. This dog had tested negative for every test Abbott put it through, yet they still put her on antibiotics and kept having her come back for rechecks. (It was a money game.) My friend changed the dog's food and the problems stopped but not before she had to go through months of being on steroids and her immune system needed to build up. After that I found a new vet and am happy with him. Stay clear, and keep your dog safe. Needless antibiotics will eventually kill them. read more
