Before and after of my dining chairs.

There should be more people taking upholstery classes here! There's still time to enroll this week. It's only $90 and you can fix up your old sofa or dining chairs like I did. Everyone here is very patient and willing to help you out especially if you're a beginner. I'm very impressed by those who sign up for both day and night classes on the same day. That's real dedication. Ask your fellow students to show you their before and after pictures of their projects - you'll be blown away. You can take found or old furniture and flip it into something new that will look awesome in your home, and best of all you did it yourself.

Just started taking the Upholstery class at night at the Cuesta location. The teacher is very knowledgeable and makes sure that safety comes first! I brought in my vintage dining chairs as projects to work on. Every student should bring their basic tools like screw drivers and tape measurer, etc, but they have a "shop card" where you buy (for cheap!) from the class: foam, padding, cotton, piping cord, button backs, etc. The Upholstery Center building also has air staple guns, heavy duty sewing machines, storage area, and other tools to share. The other students were middle aged men and women that have repeated the class for years to use the center for shop equipment and of course, guidance from Victor the instructor. I love this class!

This is what the class description says and it is complete BS!!!

I've been taking woodworking classes for the last 1.5 yrs and decided to take an upholstery class so I can upholster a wood project should I so desire. Someone told me about this school's upholstery class so I decided to take it. BIG MISTAKE! The ABC Adult School website for the class entitled: UPHOLSTERY - BASIC TECHNIQUES has the following class description: "This class teaches fundamentals of upholstery with a decorative flair, including instruction on frame construction repair, restoration, restyling and fabric selection." I signed up for this class because I wanted to learn about how to do upholstery, little did I know that the write up for the class was completely fraudulent and misrepresenting what was actually being taught which is NOTHING! You bring a project to class, put your name on the board and when the teacher gets to your name you get some help. That is it. I've had to beg and plead for information, even just being taught the basics. There is no actual lecture or class instruction, not even the basics such as what the different materials are, what they are used for, how to use an industrial sewing machine, etc. There is no curriculum whatsoever. I have had several confrontations with the instructor on this and he says he understands but can do nothing about it. If it weren't for the fact that I tore apart my boyfriend's recliner as my class project all they would see of me is my backside as I run away fast. As for learning decorative flare, frame construction, fabric selection, it never happened. WHAT A FREAKING JOKE! In addition, starting this quarter, just in time for my first class, the school stopped providing supplies the students can buy. So we have to either buy amounts that as a new student we would never use up or pray that the teacher has it in his own business and buy it from him. UGH! The biggest part of the problem is letting students just pick any furniture piece and work on it. This does not allow the teacher to teach everyone the same skills and thereby actually teach some skills rather than the students just floundering. We should all be working on the same projects, get equal instruction and once learned move on to more difficult projects. This is the way all school work is done, building on what you have learned with clear and concise instruction. 100, 101, 102, etc. Just. Like. Real. School. Duh! The only way you are going to learn anything is to take the class over and over and over and over and then only if you are lucky will you be able to reupholster a chair on your own. Do not sign up for this class unless you want to be frustrated out of your mind. Unfortunately, I will probably have to take another class in order to finish the chair I started. Another UGH!

So excited to find this school. It is the only place I have found in all of Los Angeles & Orange counties to take upholstery classes. I live in Pasadena and Cerritos is about a 1 hour drive depending on traffic. I happily commute once a week to ABC Adult School to learn about the craft of upholstery. The school has a very large complete studio fully stocked with all the equipment you need to reupholster any piece of furniture. The sewing room boasts over 10 Industrial Sewing Machines, two huge cutting boards and supplies. The workroom has enough space for 18 students to set up and work on their pieces. They also have a large storage facility to store your projects while you are working on them. I've been enrolled just this semester in two back to back classes for a total of 8 hours of instruction once a week. The new teacher, Glenn, is the best. He has VAST experience as a craftsman and patiently explains the steps you need to take to complete your project. He does recommend that you start with a simple piece to begin with and then progress. But it is your choice and he will guide you along the way. Because of the structure of the classroom, you do have to wait occasionally to get the individual teaching you need. BUT, many students here have been coming for years and are more than willing to help out a newbie. You really don't even have to ask as they kindly watch over you and offer assistance. It is a real family here creating together. I will be making this commute for years to come! Love the school and class, but the teacher and people is what makes it special!

But before we took the exam, me and those two other students were talking about how we weren't confident about taking the exam because of the instructor and her horrible confusing teaching. The instructor, which I'm guessing is the business owner, was 10 minutes late to the class and then she started the class an hour late and only checking in like six students. There were barely any students there. So an hour of teaching time was wasted because she was lollygagging. As the instructor sat down to start teaching the class, she kept stopping to text message somebody and I don't know if it was her boyfriend, but she had a huge smile on her face, Every time she was texting somebody. She did not answer questions that I had for her. She kept saying that those questions weren't necessary to answer because they weren't on the test. I paid almost $400 to take that class. I would much appreciate if you answer the questions that I have, regardless, if it's on the test or not. And then, when I finally passed the exam after having to take it a second time and after having to purchase an online Notary course by EZ Notary. I spoke to the owner on the phone and asked how can I get the rest of my supplies which is a journal, my bond and my seal. She said I would have to pay for the shipping since I don't live around there and I'm not willing to go get it in person to pick up the supplies. Her team or her emailed me the invoice for the shipment, it was $31, just to ship my bond and then I would have to pay for a second shipment for the rest of my supplies. Talk about ripping students off. Another thing is you have to pay for parking. when I called before I placed the order I asked her assistant or her front desk person do I have to pay for parking, he said no that we can get it validated for you. But nobody wanted to validate the ticket unless you bought something in that building. The parking was $20. Do not pay to take the in person class and do not pay for any other Notary course from her. She is a horrible instructor. I would not waste your time or your money. There is a much better chance passing the exam through someone else online course. Good luck!

Some faculty members (instructors and front office staff) are courteous, and some can be rude. This review is mainly focused on the parking lot however. The parking lot attendant there, has a serious attitude, and power trip problem. I was not able to get his name, because he did not wear a name tag, so I only have a description of him. He is of African-American descent, about 6 feet tall, and looks to be in his early forties. I had a really early class, so the parking lot was pretty much empty, when I got there. There were 4 parked cars, and no other person in sight besides myself. So I park my car and I get out, and I begin to gather my belongings. Upon doing that, I glance up and I see a male parking attendant, off in the distance. Suddenly, he starts walking towards me in an intimidating fashion. As I finish gathering my belongings, he approaches me. And with major attitude, he tells me that he "did not like the way I drove on his lot." He then lectures me, about how to drive properly on his lot. I was so confused that I did not know what to think or say. I was even more confused as to why he was so angry. But I apologized profusely anyways, to try to de-escalate the unnecessary drama, that he created for no reason. Little did he care how apologetic I was, because he then proceeded to threaten me with a traffic ticket. Like whhhaatt the...?!?!?! He tells me verbatim: "Next time if I see you driving like that again on my lot, I will write you up a ticket." I stood there very confused and taken aback. I could not believe how disrespectful he was, when I literally did nothing wrong. After apologizing a few more times, he finally let me get to my class. Like I said before, the power trip was real with this guy. PPffff he acted like he graduated from the police academy or something. People pay hundreds to thousands of dollars in tuition, only to be treated like garbage?!?! That is really messed up. I do not know who hired him, or how he was ever hired, but he needs to be fired asap!! Students do not need to encounter faculty members like him at any school.

She was a great instructor who actually cared about teaching and helping her students succeed. I learned a lot from her and she is a big reason I was able to pass my state board exam. Other than that, my experience with this school and its administration was extremely disappointing. During my last few months, I dealt with constant bullying and harassment from several students, including threats being made about me on TikTok Live. I reported everything while I was still attending, and the school did absolutely nothing to properly address it or protect the students involved. At one point a man even came into the school and yelled at me because he thought I was another student involved in the situation. Once again, nothing was done about it. That alone shows how poorly this place is managed. If you are thinking about attending this school, I strongly suggest you go somewhere else. Do not be fooled by the $5,000 price tag. You definitely get what you pay for here. It is absolutely worth paying more to attend a school that is actually professional, organized, and capable of handling serious issues between students. If i could give this review a .5 star I would.
